Why do JPEG files with LR Develop settings open in Photoshop Camera Raw?

Why does an image that has been altered by Lightroom cause the RAW Converter to open when trying to view it in Photoshop. Perhaps this might help; if I import, enhance and convert a RAW image in Lightroom to a jepg image it will open in Photoshop without issue. However if I then alter the jpeg image in Lightroom, update the Metadata and try to view it in Photoshop it cause the Photoshop's RAW Converter to open. Is the alter image's information held in a side car file (xmp) that can'r be read by Photoshop? If so would I need to re-export, (convert), the image again in Lightroom to embedd the changes thus making sure it could be read by all the various programs that are available to view images. As is I send photographs to newspapers and print houses it is important for me to know if they would be receiving fully adjusted images or only the adjustments that were made prior to converting from RAW to jpeg. Just in case...I am new to Lightroom. Thanks in advance for any help.

When you update the metadata for a JPEG, it is saved internally (there is no sidecar). Any JPEG with Camera Raw develop settings saved in its metadata will open in the Camera Raw plug-in in Photoshop. That is the only way for Photoshop to deal with the Camera Raw settings. Camera Raw settings can be added by the Develop module of Lightroom or from the Camera Raw plug-in dialog in Photoshop or Bridge. To prevent the file from opening in Camera Raw in Photoshop, you have to remove the develop settings and other metadata that ties the file to Camera Raw.

  • I can't preview RAW files in Bridge CS5 or open them in Camera Raw

I've been using Photoshop CS5, Bridge and Camera Raw 6.7 with no problems whatsoever.  I recently upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro to 10.8.5 and can no longer preview RAW files in Bridge, or open them in Camera Raw.
I've downloaded the Adobe DNG converter, but would much prefer to using my existing workflow if possible.
Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance for any help!

Adobe doesn't support CS5, an when I spoke to Apple, I was told that this is a known issue with OS 10.8.5 and that they're working on a patch.  In the meantime I'm using Adobe's DNG as a workaround.
Have not heard before of this Known Issue, also find it hard to believe being true. But can't test my self because I only have CS6 and CC installed and always use Photodownloader to convert to DNG upon import. I have just installed the 10.8.5 update and checked in Bridge CC pointing to an attached card reader. no problem in showing the CR2 thumbs, it works as always and as expected.
To my knowledge Bridge CS5 is already 64 bits and I can't think of any valid reason why an OS update would cause this problem so suddenly (but I'm not a technician I have to confess…)
However, I would first try a check and repair permissions from Apple Disk Utility and also try Cocktail (good and cheap 3th party maintenance application for Mac) to clear caches and check permissions.
Also try a new user account just for testing to rule out your current account as the culprit.

  • Why is jpeg file size different in CS 5 and Photoshop CC?

If I open a jpeg file in both CS5 and Photoshop CC, and then "save" the files, the file from CC is much smaller than the file from CS5.
The size and compression ratios are the same, but the file size is different.  (It is about 1/2 the size).

Bridge does not compress any files whatsoever. Bridge is not an image editor, it's nothing but a browser that hands the files to their respective applications. Bridge does not "open" or "save" files, it can't compress them in any shape or form.
What you are seeing is the difference between the opened, uncompressed file in RAM and the space the file occupies on disk once
Photoshop has saved and compressed it.
The Bridge cache has nothing to do with any of this.

  • Why won't files with awn or gif open?

I use topcashback on my computer but whenever I follow a link which contains 'awn' or 'gif' the page won't open. I then have to revert to using my tablet which doesn't have firefox loaded.

    Hi jopul,
I have not had this happen before, however I am happy to help investigate what might be causing this.
#Does this happen when you clear the cache?
#When you visit other sites with png files, does this happen? If so, do you have an image blocker, firewall or antivirus that prevents the loading of images?

  • I shoot .nef with a D800e and am learning to edit these in Photoshop Camera Raw.  How to save edits?

I shoot .nef with a D800e and am learning to edit these in Photoshop Camera Raw.  What is the best way to save for viewing and printing and sending to friends on a DVD? (TV viewing)  If I save edits as a tiff or jpeg does Photoshop remember the edits if I open the .nef picture again?  Do i really need three versions of each picture?  jpg, nef and photoshop raw, or what??    I have several thousand .nef and to convert to a photoshop raw format would take much disk space and yes I have three external drives of 1 - 3 TB.
    What is my best practice?

For that Nikon model you need ACR 8.3 that means CS6 or CC.  Or you can download the DNG converter convert your Nikon RAW files to Adobe RAW files. And then process the Adobe RAW files with CS5 ACR version  6.7

  • Why external editor Cs5 doesn't open in Adobe Camera Raw window?

I am workning in Apertute 3 and I want to edit some photos in Photoshop Cs5. I am working with RAW files, but when I want to open the file in external editor, it doesn't open in Adobe Camera Raw so I am loosing the Adobe Camera Raw adjustment abilities. Is there perhaps a way how to set up Aperture to comunicate with Photoshop Cs5 so it opens photos in Camera Raw window? I think in previous version of Aperture this was possible. Thanks.

Editing in the external editor (from within aperture) is only possible for Versions, not for masters, afaik. Since it would be pointless to export a Version again in some raw format, Aperture offers high quality lossless formats to export versions - tiff and Photoshop psd.
If you want to do the raw processing externally, you will have to edit the master image file:
export the master, or reveal a managed master and copy it to Photoshop, then reimport it.
To edit the master in Photoshop and to reimport it, you could use an automator service: I put a sample workflow and some instructions on how to use and modify it on this page: feel free to modify it according to your needs.

What kind of TIFFs?  Are they multi-layered, for instance?  ACR will not open layered files.

You need to buy PSE13. But you can continue with PSE9 if you download and install the free DNG converter to convert your CR2 files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the DNG files will work with yoir existing software(keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.8
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.8
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

I have sort of the exact same problem. Extremely far away from user friendly
I have an second issue as well: When I hook off all-day it comes up with an 8 hour event!
And then if I put in a late start hour it pushes end time to next day due to the 8 hour event suggestion.
All in all this gives a lot of changes just to enter an event.
    Command N
I learnt from your input to use this fuction. At least that comes up with a one hour event as default.

  • D600 .NEF files won't open in CS5 Camera Raw?

URGENT help please - I have a whole wedding to edit!

D600 raw files only open in CS6/ACR7.3.  You need to upgrade your Photoshop.   http://www.adobe.com/photoshop/
An alternative is to use the free DNG Converter to convert your NEFs to DNGs and those will open in older ACR versions.  Another alternative is to get Lightroom 4.3.

Even though I have checked "Automatically open all supported TIFF's" in Camera RAw Preferences - My tiff files do not open up in camera RAW - PS 6

Sorry I'm taking to along, but I checked a few things using ACR 8.6
Saved a png as an 8 bit tiff, then to 16 bit. Changed the background layer into a floating layer, all opened in ACR.
It was when I added an adjustment layer, that it no longer opened in ACR.
Now what can I recommend? If you have Lightroom, you can Import and work on your layered tiffs that way. I hope this is a viable alternative for you, because I think ACR does have a problem with layered tiffs and I don't really know of any workaround, but you are free to explore.

  • How or why would Lightroom replace my jpeg files with duplicate raw (.ORF)?

    Greetings All,
I'm new to Lightroom but I'm trying to dive in head first and learn as much as I can in a short period.  I historically shoot RAW + jpeg with an Olympus PEN EPL3.  In an effort to keep the files separated I created a RAW subfolder in the parent folder, moved the RAW files into the subfolder, leaving the jpegs in the parent folder.  I should point out that the RAW and associated jpeg still had the same identical file name given by the camera. The obvious difference being the file extension.  This was all done prior to importing.  After importing all seemed OK. I could see both files in the parent folder and hovering over each with the mouse showed one as a .ORF and the other as a .JPEG.  And the subfolder showed only the .ORF files.
After flagging some files rejected and deleting them and flagging some to keep, at some point the JPEGS were replaced with identical, additional copies of the RAW files.  So when viewing the parent folder instead of a RAW and JPEG side by side in the library, I had two RAW files and no JPEG.  So my question for everyone is what did I do that might have caused this?  And just so you know, I plan to only import RAW files into Lightroom in the future.  As I struggle to get my head wrapped around a complete overhaul on how I manage my photos, I'm beginning to see the light.  I'll still shoot both RAW and JPEG but shoot smaller JPEGS for emailing, etc. while on vacation or quickly after a shoot and only import the RAW files for later editing, eventually dumping all of the JPEGS to create new selected ones form my RAW edits.
So although I don't think I'll ever have the conditions again needed to reproduce my experience, I would like to try to have an understanding of it, if possible.  Any suggestions or advice are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    MrCakes

All good stuff, thanks again.  But I may have inferred I'm more a newbie than I actually am.  By short amount of time I mean several weeks. I've utilized these and sat in two workshops so far (underwater photo editing). I realize its still just scratching the surface. I'm still keeping at it, even if I have to chalk this up to gremlins. I'll keep at it.

  • TS3276 why is jpeg file lost and replaced with winmail.dat file in mail

I sent a jpeg file to my hotmail account, which is synchronised in my Mac Mail but the file was lost/converted to winmail.dat attachment, which I couldn't import to iPhoto. How do I import a jpeg image, emailed to me from an external source, to iPhoto?

I think you need to configure Outlook in Windows to use HTML messages.
Here is Microsoft's incomprehensible support document on the issue.
Here is one from about.com that makes sense.

  • Why am I being told that a JPEG file that I made changes to in Photoshop 6 (CS6) can't be saved?  The message I get says that either the file is locked and I don't have permission to execute this or another program is using this file.

i recently purchased a 21.5 iMac with Yosemite (10.10.1) and was disappointed to discover that my CS6 programs are not functioning correctly.  I am unable to use the "Save As" command  when making changes to a JPEG file in Photoshop.  The message I get says that either another program is using the file or it is locked and I don't have permission to execute that command.  I'm experiencing a similar problem in Bridge when trying to move an unwanted file to the Trash.  Again, I get a message telling me that i don't have permission to do this.  Lastly, I'm unable to open any Camera Raw files.  Any suggestions?  I had no problems with the Mavericks OS on my old iMac and although it's much slower, I'm tempted to go back to using my old iMac.  At this point, I feel as if I've just wasted $2300+ (tax included).

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
