Why Does iTunes Keep Prompting Me For a Password For Automatic Downloading?

And how do I make it stop doing that?  Everytime I open iTunes, it asks for this password, and I don't know why.  My iMac at home doesn't ask for it, and it has the most current OS update and iTunes version, as does the Macbook this is happening on.  It's quite annoying.

I am unsure as to what you are referring to with respects to my accounts, but ill try and clarify.
I vaguely remember having to sign up for an apple ID several months ago. since that time, my mail program has been asking me for the password for the server (as i listed it) and i have never been able to enter a password that it accepts. Ill be the first to admit that computers are not my strong point, and especially not Apples, as i used PC's my whole life, but i do write down passwords that i use for accounts.
so anyways, i never used the mail account, or the apple forums up until a few days ago when i tried to set up another mail server (the one i use) so that i could access it from mail.
it wouldnt accept the password that i though it should be, so i followed the prompts and instructions to re set my password. again, it didnt change anything.
finally i created this apple id to access this message board. i hope this clarifies my situation...
anyways, as per your advice:
so i went in to keychain, but all i see is the mail server account that i want to be using, and i dont see the mac server account on the list.

  • Why does iTunes keep prompting for password for Auto Downloads

What is the point checking off "Always check for available downloads" and "Download pre-orders when available" if iTunes isn't going to actually automatically download anything until I go to my computer and enter the password in the pop-up? I understand having to enter a password when buying something new, but why can't it just download the already paid for pre-order TV shows without me having to intervene? All that does it save one step (clicking on "Check for available downloads") and it causes my iTunes to stop or interrupt streaming to my devices such as AppleTV when that prompt is sitting on the screen.
There is no good reason this basic stuff shouldn't be completely automatic ... I should be able to go to bed at night, and when I get up in the morning and go to my AppleTV I should immediately be able to just watch any new episodes that became available during the night without having to stream them from iCloud (which means I would have to download it twice, once while streaming and again to have it on my Mac).

    Nope...
I went through point by point by point, top to bottom, checking and verifying every single item as a possible cause for why my system (Outlook 2013 running on Windows 8.1 and connecting to Exchange 2010) insists on prompting me for my password every single
time I start Outlook.  None of the solutions worked, my system still prompts me.  I don't even have to supply a password.  When the prompt dialog appears, I just cancel it.  Within a few seconds, the bottom Outlook status bar changes to
"Need Password" with a key icon to the left.  Then I just click on that message and immediately Outlook connects to Exchange.
The freaking software is BROKEN!  Period.

  • Why does Outlook keep prompting for password

We have seen our community members ask questions about Outlook keeps prompting for credentials many times. This issue could be caused by numerous reasons. Below is a list of the most common reasons for this problem:
Outlook is configured to prompt you for credentials
Incorrect password cached in credential storage
Required Authentication Settings for outgoing server and incoming server
Outlook Anywhere is not configured to use NTLM Authentication
    Corrupt Outlook profile
    Slow or unstable network connection
    Antivirus programs
    Shared calendars
Outlook is configured to prompt you for credentials
If you are using an Exchange account, there is a setting in your Outlook profile to always prompt for logon credentials. To find the setting, please follow:
    1. In Outlook 213, go to File tab > Info >
    Account Settings > Account Settings…
    2. Highlight your Exchange account and click Change button.
    3. Click on More Settings button.
    4. Select the Security tab.
    5. Under the User Identification, make sure the “Always prompt for logon credentials” option is not selected.
If you are using other types of email, please make sure you have ticked the option “Remember password”.
Incorrect credential cached in Credential Manager
Your Windows system stores user credentials on your computer. If the cached credentials are incorrect, you will be prompted for password. This issue usually happens after the password for your domain user account is changed. Before your password changed,
you saved your credentials. The stored credentials are not overwritten when Outlook triggers the authentication prompt even if you enable the Remember my credentials option.
To fix this issue, you need to remove the corrupted credentials, follow these steps:
Click Start,      click Control Panel, and then click Credential Manager.
Note If View by is set to Category, click User Accounts first, and then click Credential Manager.
Locate  the set of credentials that has Outlook in the name.
Click the name to expand the set of credentials, and then click Remove from Vault.
Repeat step 3 for any additional sets of credentials that have the word Outlook in the name.
Required Authentication Settings for outgoing server and incoming server
Different email provider may need different authentication settings. Please make sure you have set the server settings correctly. You can contact your email provider to gather the information.
In general, we select the “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication” option and the first bullet “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”.
In addition, click on the Advanced tab and check if you have enter the correct Server Port Number and select the correct encrypt type. Below is a screenshot for an IMAP account:
Outlook Anywhere is not configured to use NTLM Authentication
The Outlook Anywhere feature allows you to access your Exchange account remotely from the Internet when you are working outside your organization's firewall.
When using Outlook Anywhere to connect to your Exchange server, we need to choose
the authentication method among Basic Authentication, NTLM Authentication and Negotiate Authentication. The difference among them is the way that the passwords are sent when connecting to the server. With Basic Authentication,
the password is sent in clear text. Using NTLM Authenticationcan significantly reduce the number of password prompts.
To check the authentication setting, please go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings,
select the Exchange account, and then click
Change. In the Change Account wizard, click
More Settings, and then click the Connection tab. Click the Exchange Proxy Settings button and now, you can see the settings under
Proxy authentication settings. Try to change the authentication to
NTLM Authentication and then check the issue again.
    Slow or unstable network connection
If your network connection is slow or unstable, Outlook may lose connection to the mail server. When Outlook try to reconnect, it will prompt for the credentials. To verify this, please switch to a stable network environment and then check if this issue
    persists.
    Corrupt Outlook Profile
Corrupt profile may cause Outlook to no longer remember your password. Please try to create a new mail profile in Control Panel and reconfigure your email account in the new profile to fix the issue. To create a new mail profile, you can refer:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918
    Antivirus software
Antivirus software usually integrates into your Outlook and it may cause some conflicts. Try to temporarily turn off your antivirus software to check if the issue will be gone.
    Shared Calendar
Shared calendars can impact the user credentials, this issue may also occur if you have shared calendars opened in Outlook. You can try to unselect the shared calendar to check the result. It’s recommended to not open the shared calendar unless you want
    to view them.

  • Why does iTunes keep asking for my password when I want to listen to my music on my iPhone?

When I want to listen to music on my iPhone, iTunes keeps asking for my password.  I am not purchasing anything.  It started today.  Why is that?

I've been having the same problem on my iPad and iPhone. I talked to Apple customer service this morning. They had me do the following on both devices in the Settings:
    * Sign out of iTunes & App Store
    * Sign out of FaceTime
    * Sign out of Game Center
    * Delete iCloud account
They also had me restore my iPad due to some glitchy behavior in the Music app.
Things seemed to me fixed for a few hours until I went into the iTunes Store app on my iPad and added a movie to my Wish List. When I went back to the Music app, the dreaded "Sign In to iTunes Store" popup started showing up again on both devices. Suspicious!
So, I cleared out my Wish List in both the iTunes Store and App Store. I've been poking at the Music app on both my iPhone and iPad since then I haven't seen that popup once since then. I'm not going to declare victory yet since it's only been an hour or two, but I thought that this was worth mentioning.

  • Why does iTunes keep reseting my library?

This is the second time this has happened: everything will be working fine (as fine as iTunes 7 can) and then I'll wake up one morning and BAM! - all the songs and delightfully crafted smart playlists will be gone, replaced by no songs and the default playlists iTunes gives you. The music files aren't gone from my hard drive, just the ratings, play counts, date added and last played data and all that stuff iTunes takes care of. I wouldn't be so frustrated, but my smart playlists are either based on the songs' ratings, play counts or how recently they were added.
Last time I had to manually rip them from my iPod using one of those ripping programs (thanks to Apple's refusal to allow iPod to PC synchronising) which took me ages because I'm too stingy to pay for the registered version and had to keep clicking a "buy me" notice every 50 of 3500 songs, as well as changing the date on the computer so the 'date added' data wouldn't be too out of whack.
After the last time this happened I backed up the library xml file, but that was in early October and since then I've added several hundred songs, and it looks like I'll have to do the same procedure again to get back my data. So, is there any way to prevent this from ever happening again? Or, why does this happen to my library at all?

It keeps happening to mine as well. Honestly I think it's something that iTunes (or Apple) does if they find out you haven't been paying over 200 dollars for songs from them. I read an artical about that as well. It doesn't help that when I e-mailed the staff about this, they sent me an e-mail back basically saying: If you bought our songs, then we can return them to you... if not, then it ***** to be you.

  • Why does it keep asking me for the login keychain password?

I am having a problem where my imac keeps asking me for a "login keychain" password. I type in my password every time, but that doesn't fix my problem. I need to know if this is bad or not, and how i can turn it off.
    Thanks!

    Hey there Daniel,
It sounds like you are being prompted over and over for your Login Keychain, and entering it does not seem to make the prompts stop. I would start by running First Aid on the Keychain with this article:
Mac OS X 10.6: Solving problems with keychains
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph7296
To check keychains for problems using Keychain First Aid:
Open Keychain Access, located in the Utilites folder in the Applications folder.
Choose Keychain Access > Keychain First Aid.
Enter your user name and password.
Select Verify and click Start. Any problems found will be displayed.
If there are problems, select Repair, and then click Start.
If that does not resolve the issue, I would next reset your Keychain:
In Keychain Access, choose Preferences from the Keychain Access menu.
If available, click the Reset My Default Keychain button. This will remove the login keychain and create a new one with the password provided.
If Reset My Default Keychain is not available, choose Keychain List from the Edit menu.
    Delete the "login" keychain.
The next time you log in to the account, you can save your current password in a keychain.
From: OS X: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login           password

  • Why does iTunes keep launching?

All of a sudden, out of the blue, iTunes keeps launching when an alarm goes off in the application Alarm Clock Pro (ACP).  My wife is a teacher and ever since August 2011 I created alarms to notify her five minutes before the end of her classes.  She doesn't know how to change anything in ACP and she doesn't use iTunes.  Nothing has been changed but last week every time an alarm goes off iTunes launches.
I've gone through and checked the preferences in both programs and nothing points to this issue.  I know, ACP has an option to launch and play something in iTunes but this is NOT selected.
    Any help or suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Merry CHRISTmas,
    Nathan

I thought at one time you there was a setting to prevent iTunes opening when a device was plugged in, I don't believe that the sync option will prevent that.
In your login items, System Preferences/Users and Groups do you have an item "iTunes Helper" I think this is the application monitoring the devices you plugin.
You could try closing that application in Activity Monitor and plugging your devices in and checking if it stop iTunes opening, also check if it stops it opening through the day. If it does just remove it from your login items after confirming it does not impact on other iTunes uses.

  • HT2534 Why does iTunes keep

I am trying to update my apps and iTunes keeps asking for my security code on my CC. I enter the new info and it still says invalid. Help

    Hi, vcharisse.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are receiving an alert that your connection timed out when restoring.  This usually means that there is a USB or security software conflict.  I have attached a couple troubleshooting articles that provide solutions for this issue.

  • ITunes Won't Authorize for Automatic Downloads & Account Information Viewing

    Hi,
So I've been having a problem signing into iTunes for the last few days now. First off, I've isolated the problem to my MacBook Pro and verified that Mac OS X/iTunes were both up to date. I've reinstalled iTunes and restarted. I've tried re-athorizing my computer for the Store. I've tried reseting my network configuration by deleting the NetworkInterfaces.plist. I've even tried deleting the SC Info folder. Nothing has worked. At all. What is happening is that whenever I go to authorize Automatic Downloads or to view my Account in the iTunes Store, it just keeps prompting me without ever signing in. I can see the progress bar moving to signify it's attempting to connect but it always fails to do so. Oddly enough and despite not being able to update my apps, it's actually somehow updated a few of them. Could this perhaps be a case of my ISP not having the correct ports open? At this point, I really don't know what else it could be. Anyway, this is just becoming more and more frustrating by the day. Please help!

Let me guess: you changed hardware or did major system changes? Like Windows needs to be activated again after such changes, iTunes needs too. Just deauthorise the PC and authorise again, should fix the problem.

  • Why does iTunes keep deleting music from off my iPhone

Ok so my music from iphone keeps deleting itself. I keep having to restore this dumb phone only to lose my information days and sometimes hours later. This is the final straw for me. I've restored this phone 20 times in a week! Im tired of dealing with all of these technical issues so when my contract is up I'm done with this thing. Is there ANYTHING I can do in the meantime to keep from losing my music.

I'll continue the discussion. I find the item in question. There was an app that I had deleted from my iTunes but was still on my iPhone dspite numerous syncs. I deleted the separately from my iPhone and no longer received the warning message described above.
Now however, when I delate an app in iTunes not only does the app stay on the iPhone but I do not even get the warning message.
My next step is to perform a restore. Perhaps this will clear up both this problem and a series of other issues like the wi-fi on/off randomly greying out on the iPhone and having all of my music on the iPhone disappearing after a sync.

  • Why does iTunes keep cutting all my songs?

I'm getting sick of this problem. I've got about 15 gigabytes of music. About 700 songs or so have been purchased from iTunes, the rest are from CDs I've scanned in. With the purchased songs, it feels like every third song was an incomplete download! It'll show as the full length, but when I'm listening to it on my iPod Touch 5th gen or on my laptop, the song cuts off. I tried talking to Apple support about it and I went through a million and one different steps to redownload my music library, but it just made the problem worse. Before it was maybe one in every six songs, now it feels like one in every three. It's extremely frustrating to be listening to a favorite song and it gets cut off a minute or two in.
It wouldn't be so bad if each song had a redownload button next to it, so I could just click on the problem songs and redo it. But having to go through a million emails and menus and options and settings just to have the problem still be there... I never had this problem when I got my music from Amazon.

This can be caused by other software conflicting with itunes. Such as, Sony Vaio users are reporting this issue in droves....other causes can be security software like Norton, Uniblue Speed Up My PC, Zune....
Maybe post some more details, and we can help.
One quick thing to try is, move your itunes library.itl file out of the msuic folder and put it in a new folder named test.
Press *and hold* the shift key while starting itunes. Browse to the ITL file in the test folder when prompted.
Close itunes, reopen, and see if your library is OK - it should keep using the ITL file in the test folder.
If it is OK, then I'm 100% sure some other software is doing this.
And you just faked it out by creating the test folder it didn't know about.

  • Why does itunes keep dropping my devices and files

Everytime I set my iPods asides for a few weeks and then reconnect them to iTunes they will not sync.  iTunes flushes all the content I've loaded from CD's <1,000 songs plus audio books.  iTunes wants me to re-register and reload everything.  This has appened three times in the last year.  It happens on both my Windows and OS X machines.  I have an iPod Touch and an iPod classic.  ITunes refuses to allow me to keep both devices and computers in sync.  Before I spend the two plus days to reload again I would like to know what the heck is going on.

Why? Sony Viao by any chance? That comes with some media scanning software which has a habit of interferring with iTunes when it save files, resulting in a corrupt or missing library. Anti-virus software may also possibly be a cause on occasion.
See this User Tip for an effective backup strategy.
I've also written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this  thread for background.

  • Why does iTunes keep sending songs to trash, even though I haven't deleted them?

There is one specific album in my itunes library that itunes (on a daily basis!) deletes 4/5 songs from. It almost always deletes the same songs, I just don't understand why this would be happening? The only time I realise is if I happen to scan through the trash before emptying.
Theres no alert regarding deletion or consolidation of files, in fact there have been times where some of these songs are on a playlist and when the playlist goes back to the start, some of these songs can't be located again, and are in the trash folder again.
I should clarify that I keep my itunes library on an external harddrive, although I don't see how this would affect it.
Has anyone else come across this problem before, and more importantly found a solution?
    Thanks,
    Daryl

Turns out it was firewall related. Even when I turned the firewall off and rebooted, it didn't help. I finally had to uninstall Avast antivirus, and then everything worked great.
To anyone else who has this issue with Avast and iTunes/Bonjour, I also found this thread that might be worth trying:
