Why does my Terminal prompt change to " "?

I am baffled by a behaviour of the Terminal app, when running a command which I have repeatedly and successfully used before.
On a new Mac, I set up a group (within System Preferences > Users and Groups) containing two users who are to have complete access to any files placed within /Users/Shared/Documents/, called docShare.
I then went into Terminal, and then tried running the following command at a normal-looking prompt:
myMac:~ myName$ sudo chmod -R +a “group:docShare allow delete,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,list,search,add_file,add_sub directory,delete_child,read,write,execute,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/Documents/
(I sudo'ed just because various documents in the folders have different owners. I am the owner of the Documents folder itself.)
Previously, when I've done this on our other Macs (and I've done the same thing for shared iTunes Media folders and iPhoto library), it works without a hitch. ls -le shows that the ACLs have been updated, and bingo! unfettered access to contents of the folder for the two users. This time, though, all that happens is that the prompt changes to an unadorned greater-than symbol:

A cursor flashes, but all subsequent keyboard input is ignored (or at least, it's not echoed on the screen). On quitting and relaunching Terminal, the default bash prompt reappears as shown above, but the ACLs haven't been altered.
I can't help feeling I'm missing something simple here, but I really can't find anything relevant on on web searches. Can anyone enlighten me as to why this command fails on this specific folder, please? I'd be most grateful!

TextEdit is a good editor for doing text but a bad editor for doing systems type things, It has a bad tendency to changes things on you even in dumb mode. If you do any editing of system files or scripts (or even command line things like this) I recommend you get TextWrangler a free editor geared towards this type of work.
Anyway glad you got it to work.

The computer name is 'Travis', and always has been.
Hmmm...
Further investigating shows a computer by that name on the network with a different IP address. The DHCP server shows my IP address as associated with my computer name, 'Travis'.
So could this be an OS X network error where it's picking up the computer name from something like WINS or DNS and not updating it if the IP lease changes? And if so, why does it not simply use the given name specified by the user instead?
As far as the network is concerned, my computer name is 'Travis', as it should be.

EDIT: BTW, 'Use dynamic global host name' is not enabled.

I went to "view" then "toolbars" and de-selected "yahoo toolbar" and then moved the curser over my firefox page and it now works completely including the problem area (the top 3 cm of each screen). Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. You have no idea how good I feel know on this otherwise cold, windy and rainy day.

Your screen is 1920 by 1080 pixels.
The problem appeared after having worked normally.
When we select a picture from the organizer (album) and click on the edit button. The editor software changes the entire computer resolution from 1920 x 1080 to 640 x 480 (very unusable).
That's not clear for me: did you click on the 'Edit' button on the bottom right part of the organizer, or did you use the menu or the right click popup menu to open the editor? In the second case, you are in the editor workspace.
We tried right clicking on the Elements 13 icon, select properties and under compatibility we made sure that "run in 640 x 480 screen resolution" was de-selected, and it was. Cannot find any properties window for the editor?
The editor has its properties in the 'Edit/preferences' menu, but there is nothing about resolution there.
Just to be sure : when you are in the organizer with the left 'Folders' panel shown, you highlight one of those pictures to edit. Then you right click and choose to "go to folder". Do the images are shown as 'offline' ? If that is the case, the original are on an external drive which is not connected, and what you are seeing is a 'preview' copy on your computer with 640 x 480 resolution.

Why does Lion KEEP reversing changes you make in address book and other applications without your consent and without wanting it to??? Plus address book will NOT import old address book contacts from Snow Lepoard 10.6 and keep them. This Lion OXS 7 is .. becoming very frustrating ... it will NOT keep changes made in the Address Book and it has destroyed my contacts which I only have electronically since 10.4 in my address book. I am NOT happy with this OS7 it has a lot of issues and faults. How can one stop automatic reversing of data when inputting???

Relax. Your address book database is corrupted.
If you are syncing your Contacts with MobileMe or something else, disable it for now.
Backup your address book by going to File>Export>Address Book Archive.
Quit Address Book.
Open your Library by holding down the Option (alt) key while selecting the Go menu in Finder. Select Library. Navigate into your Application Support/AddressBook folder and delete the addressbook-v22.abcddb file.
Open Address Book. It will recreate the database from the raw data.
See how that works. If it is ok, then reenable syncing and see how that works.

That's probably a broken display profile. The conversion from Library's Adobe RGB is different than the conversion from Develop's linear ProPhoto, so if there's a problem with the display profile it can show up this way.
Recalibrate, or if you don't have a calibrator use sRGB. If your monitor is a wide gamut model use Adobe RGB.
Assuming Windows, change it in Control Panel > Color Management > Devices, and relaunch Lightroom so that it can pick up the new profile at startup:

My font/text changes when I switch from Classic 3D to Ray traced 3D. Why is it doing this? Also, I cant get the font/txt to look the same after I switch from Classic to Ray traced. How can I get it to look the same?

I am pretty new to After Effects so I hope it's not my inexperience that's causing the problem. (It probably is)

Okay so after looking at it a little closer, I think the color is what mostly changes. The first screenshot is the what the text look like with Classic 3D and the second screenshot is what it looks like after I change it to Ray traced 3D. Also under the "Mode" section..the pull down that says "Normal" disappears. I'm wondering why the font color is changing?

Hi,
I have just recently bought photoshop, When I use the magnifier, it sometimes zooms on the left mouse button and zooms out on the right mouse button. Other times it dosn't do this. Why does it keep changing and how do I get it to stay on L/R button zoom?
I have just created my new site that has many English teachers on Skype All this was done using Photoshop cs6 but I had the problem with the zoom the whole time!!
Please help me with this annoyance!

WDS-Why does my rate keep changing?

I have a WDS network with one remote base station. So I expect the ability of the throughput to be cut by 25%. Thats no big deal to me cause the possible rate is 54 with my g devices and a 25%cut in ability is well above the 7Mbps we are buying.
My question. In Airport utility/Advanced/Wireless Clients I see the rate of the Main Base Station is 54. But the rate of the Remote Base Station is sometimes 48 or 36 or 24. Why does it change?

Oops, right. Sorry my first post was wrong, the WDS reduces throughput by half with each relay or remote.

Why does my Ipad suddenly start changing screens and sites randomly on it's own? It's like it spazzes out rather frequently for no apparent reson.

It's hard to say why, but try rebooting the device by pressing and holding the on/off and home buttons simultaneously until the screen goes blank and you see the apple logo. It should take about 10-15 seconds to reboot. See if this stops it.

This coding seems to change the the lead selection of the context node, which leads to problems somewhere else.
Why does it change the lead selection and how can I prevent it?

         i dont think there is a need for looping in this manner.
         you just get all the values of a node into an internal table.
         and then loop the internal table an make changes in it.
         then clear the node and pass this currently changed internal table into the node.
          the lead selection changes because you are setting the attribute and it might be stored in index 1 or the to the index where the lead selection is referred to. this might be your problem.

Why does premiere elements 8 change a 29.97 fps to a 25 when conforming?

I have a project setting of NTSC HDV 1440 x 1080 with a frame rate of 29.97. when i import video, it conforms and indexes it and then suddenly the frame rate is no longer 29.97 but 25? why does it do this?
