Why is DVD fuzzy made via iMovie,Media browser, iDVD at professional quality.  Original photos very sharp, DVD fuzzy.

I made an iMovie from very sharp photos, moved it to iDVD via Media Browser, Made "Professional Quality" DVD in iDVD.  When I play the DVD back on eiher my iMac oxs 10.7.5 "DVDPlayer" or my DVD player hooked to my Sony TV set, the resulting movie from the DVD is unsharp, very fuzzy and very disappointing.  I am using Memorex DVD-R discs.  The playback colors of the made DVD are also changed from the original photos I used from i Photo.
Is this normal to loose so much sharpness and clarity in going from iPhoto to iMovie to iDVD?

Hi
OR the long long answer is something like this:
DVD quality
1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
About double on DL DVDs.
2. Video from
FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD.
They drop every second line in the picture.
Go via Media Browser (and then use MEDIUM - as HD does get a BAD Scale down quality) or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
- iDVD - set Burn Speed in iDVD Pref. / Advance - BEST IS NOT BEST - x2 or max x4
- Roxio™ - set in burn process
- Disk Util tool - set in burn process
BEST IS NOT BEST
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
iDVD quality also depends on.
DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
_ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
1 = US
2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
to get this to work I
Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc
and I'm very careful on what kind of video-codecs, audio file format and photo file formats I use
and I consider the iDVD Bug - never go back to video-editor to change/up-date - if so Start  a brand new iDVD project
Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
Try to break the process up into two stages
Save as a DiskImage (calculating part)
Burn from this .img file (burning stage)
To isolate where the problem starts.
Another thing is - Playing it onto a Blu-Ray Player. My PlayStation3 can play BD-disks but not all of my home made DVDs so to get this to work I
Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk
Use Verbatim DVD-R (absolutely no +/-RW)
Set down burn speed to x4 - less burn errors = plays on more devices
No other process running in background as - ScreenSaver, EnergySaver OR TIMEMACHINE etc

Chapters set as they should - NO one at very beginning and no one in any transition or within 2 sec from it
Lay-out - Turn on TV-Safe area and keep everything buttons, titles etc WELL INSIDE not even touching it !
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk for SD-Video Quality and about 4 - 5 times more - if it is a HD-Project.
No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
Do not have more external devices connected as is of urgent need. Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - Or to be disconnected/turned off
Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo
First - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set pointer to this
Secondly - turns on screen saver
Then - to show that it has nothing to show
No File Vault on - Important
NO - TimeMachine - during iMovie/iDVD work either ! IMPORTANT
Lot's of icons on DeskTop/Finder also slows down the Mac noticeably
if a project is in a real hurry
First - Then Start a new User-Account and
Then - log into this and iMovie get's faster too
And let Mac run on Mains - not just on battery

When you watch on your Mac, it is at or near HD 1920x1080 pixels (about 2 megapixels), depending on the resolution of your screen. Most photos today are 5 megapixels or greater, depending on your camera, but anything over 2 megapixels must be reduced when put in a video.
When you create a DVD, you must further reduce it to 640x480, standard definition. This is about 0.3 megapixels. iDVD will do this for you.
You can fix by creating an HD movie in iMovie. You can Share this using Share/Export Using QuickTime to an MP4 container using the h.264 codec. You can then put this movie on your PS3 using a USB thumb drive.
That should give you good resolution.
(NEVER MIND, YOU SAID PS2 not PS3, my apologies)

  • Can't burn iMovie on DVD via share- media browser

Hi, I am a novice with iMovie. I have filmed my twins' first Xmas carol concert with my Canon digital video camera. Now I want to burn a simple copy of the film fro my white MacBook onto DVD for fellow mums.I did share->media browser then iDVD ->new project . It says project errors while adjusting or sth like that. Then ask me for a theme ??? and Dropzones?????? Help I don't want anything fancy just my raw film on a DVD. Also the film has only 7600MB a new 4.7GBDVD +R  disk has not enough space, how come???? I spent now 3 hours trying to achive this without any luck - PLEASE someone out there have mercy!

    daveslave101,
Karsten Schluter has some suggestions on how to just make a simple no theme DVD project here on this message thread:
Home Video in _TS starts in DVD player automatically when I copy and burn it will not start automatically. How do I make a good copy to start automatically?
Set the Project to 'Structure View', then drag the video project from the Media Browser into the first 'box' that appears in the DVD structure view of the project. Also note, iDVD doesn't pay any attention to how big your finished video clip is. It only pays attention to how long the video clip runs. iDVD will allow you to create a DVD just under 120 minutes in length (but it will take a while to crunch everything down into the space available). Ideally your project would be just under 60 minutes (and that takes much less time to transcode into MPEG2 format for the DVD). As long as your video runs under 120 minutes iDVD will be able to fit it on the space of a DVD+R disk I think. iDVD also takes into a account all the 'interface' items you aren't going to use (menus, animations, thumbnail video clips and music), that takes up space too, so you might be closer to 100-110 minutes run time at a maximum for an iDVD project.

  • What is the best way to copy a DVD i made from iMovie?  It was HD720 and I don't want to lose any quality in the copies.

What is the best way to copy a DVD I made from iMovie?  It was HD720 and I don't want to lose any quality in the copies.  I need to distribute it to about 20 people. It's 42 minutes long.

You will need to save it as a video to the camera roll.
Import it into windows as you would a photo.
Then purchase DVD authoring software, and create a DVD.

  • Imovie media browser only has one option, "Mobile". other videos had option for medium and small. mobile option wont import into iDVD. other videos gave me the Medium option, why not this one?

help! imovie media browser only has one option, "Mobile". other videos had option for medium and small. mobile option wont import into iDVD. other videos gave me the Medium option, why not this one? need answers ASAP!

    That is your answer then.
    Large is 960x540
    Medium is 640x480 (or 720x480)
    Mobile is probably 480x272.
It is offering you the sizes that make sense given the size of your source material.
As a trick, you might try this. In your project, put a short 640x480 clip in the project as the first clip of the project. Then keep the rest of the project as is. See if it will let you share now in Medium. It will not look as good, because there are not enough pixels to cover the Medium size, but it might work.

  • How do I export my iMovie '11 video and burn it to a DVD? I've tried 'Share' - 'Media Browser', 'iDVD', and 'Export Movie' but always get an error message indicating that my movie is too long to publish. Thoughts?

How do I export my iMovie '11 video and burn it to a DVD? I've tried 'Share' - 'Media Browser', 'iDVD', and 'Export Movie' but always get an error message indicating that my movie is too long to publish. Thoughts? Additionally, what does 'File' 'Finalize Project' do?

Instead of Share to Media Browser, what happens if you try Share Menu > Export Movie... (choose Large size) and save it to the Desktop?
If that fails try Share Menu > Export using QuickTime...
Then pick Movie to QuickTime Movie, then click on Options... which is just to the right of Export
Under the Video section click on Settings...
Then in the pulldown menu at the top, titled Compression Type: Choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Then click OK. And click OK again, and save it to the desktop. Once the .mov file is created, you can import that into iDVD and most likely it will work in Wondershare Creator if you prefer to use that instead.

  • Aperture in iMovie Media Browser

I have looked in the Aperture manual, in the iMovie help, and I did a search on this forum. So far, I can't find an answer and I hope you can help. I recently upgraded from iPhoto to Aperture 3 and everything is working fine in Aperture 3. In Aperture 3, I have the projects sorted by date, which is the way I want them. that works fine. But when I use the Media Browser to access my Aperture projects, they are sorted alphabetically, not by date. This was not a problem when I used iPhoto, so I don't understand what the issue is. Is there some way to get the iMovie media browser to use the same sort order I have specified in Aperture 3? Thanks in advance for the help.

naperdan, thanks for your response. No, I had not seen that thread before, but it doesn't address my issue. Aperture 3 is working just fine for me, and I am not having any of the problems after importing my iPhoto libraries into Aperture 3 that the OP indicated. I can see all of my Aperture projects and albums in the Media Browser, I just can't find how to show them by date rather than by name. I could, I suppose, rename all 46 projects (e.g., change "photos0810" to "0810photos" and that would probably force the Media Browser to work the way I want it to. I just don't understand why it would show the iPhoto library in the sort order I specified in iPhoto but the Media Browser is treating the Aperture 3 library differently.

how do i export a video made in imovie to youtube in the best quality possible?

You can only export in the same resolution that you imported.
That is if you shot in 720p you cannot export in 1080p.
Share > YouTube and select the highest resolution available.

  • How do I access photos via the Media browser in iPhoto '08?

I have used Pages several times before for an in-house newsletter--with good success. My last newsletter was done in the version of Pages contained in iWork '06 and with photos contained in iPhoto library from iLife '06. Now I am using the version of Pages from iWork '08 and photos from my iPhoto library in iLife '08. When I am in Pages and open the Media Browser, I can see all the photos in various Events. How do I select/choose a particular photo within an Event and drag it to an image placeholder in my Pages document?

My Media Browser shows Events or Images. See below and see if yours is the same:

  • IPhoto doesn't show up in iMovie media browser

I have the fully installed iLife 06, and when I am in iMovie and go to the media browser to pick an image, nothing shows up to populate the browser. It seems as if the browser is not seeing iPhoto. I have tried this with iPhoto open and closed. No difference. I have thrown out the iLife media browser plist. Still no luck. Threw out the iPhoto plist. No luck. Repaired permissions and restarted. Stilll no luck. Coincidentally, the mark/space photo conduit for my in The Missing Sync cannot see iPhoto also. It's as if other programs have no clue that iPhoto is installed. Anybody have this happen? What's the fix?

    SGMS,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You are right. That example describes the keyword information from the AlbumData.xml file, not the keyword list in iPhoto.
In the iPhoto keyword list, click on your first keyword to select it. Then use the down arrow key to highlight each keyword in succession. If you come across a blank space in the list that becomes selected, click on the - symbol below the list to delete it. I have seen several reports of a blank keyword causing the problem. Another easy check is to click on a keyword, then click Rename to highlight it. If you see a blank space before or after the keyword, delete the space.
If that's not it, I'll explain further. Dave E's instructions are for how to read the AlbumData.xml file to help identify if you have a faulty keyword. The xml file is just inside your iPhoto Library Folder. You have to access it through the Finder. (Be warned not to change anything you find from the Finder, though.) Right-click (control-click) on the AlbumData.xml file. Choose Open with > Other... then navigate to the Application Text Edit. When it opens, type Command F (Find) and in the Find box enter "List of keywords". The document will scroll down to show you the text where the keyword information is listed. This is where it looks like the description by Dave E. If you see 2 keywords lumped together, then you close the xml file, go back to the keyword list in iPhoto Preferences, and edit or delete the words that did not have the same format as the others.

  • Images Shuffled Randomly in iMovie Media Browser?

When creating an imovie slide show and opening my AP3 projects in the media browser the images are not in the same sequence as when I view them in AP3. Can this be corrected? I've posted this ? in iMovie forum as well.

Aperture's iLife previews currently only sort by version name or manual sort. You'll need to set your albums/projects to sort by one of those options if you want the order to be predictable.
I also recommend you voice your displeasure about this annoying bug to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html

  • Still can't see iPhoto in iMov Media Browser after deleting "&'s" and prefs

Combed the discussions - many references to this problem - I tried deleting ALL question mark symbols "?" from ALL my iPhotos - an arduous task but I know I got them all - then deleted the preferences and rebuilt iPhoto with command option - everything in it... Still no luck viewing my iPhoto libraries in iMovie - so can't increase duration times because "show photo settings" grays out - does ANYbody have a fix?
    thanks!

I saw your post earlier when I was having the same difficulty. A recent post suggested rebuilding the iPhoto Library using Shift Option when opening the application. I tried that and it created a new iPhoto Library_2 folder. That folder showed up in the Media Browser, so I just imported all the photos in my previous iPhoto folder into the new one. It worked for me; I hope it works for you.

  • Import iMovie '08 into iDVD '08 Movie Quality

In iLife '06 there were ways to import movies into iDVD to get a good quality movie. Like instead of using the export menu in iMovie I would just open iDVD and click and drag the .mov file straight into iDVD and the quality was great. I guess there was a bug in the exporting method. Now to get a good quality movie on a single layer dvd coming from iMovie '08 are there things I need to know?
PS. I would prefer HighDef with my Sony HDR-SR12. Yeah Yeah I know I need Blu-Ray but until that that comes only what is the best I can get?
