Why is Flash Pro being deprecated??

It seems like Adobe is blowing off Flash Pro more and more and I find it disturbing.
I develop prototypes for Android apps.  Flash is SOOOOO much better for prototyping and rapid, X-platform conceptualization than ANY other product out there.
Nothing else (e.g. Edge Animate, Axure, Proto.io, etc...) even comes close for designers to use!
I can create fully functional prototypes of anything at all, in 1/10th the time and with 10x the level of flexibility that can be achieved with a prototype built by some engineer in native Android. (As for the wonderful HTML5 that Adobe keeps pushing - give me a break!  Maybe in 5 years it'll catch up, but for now it doesn't compare to the power of Flash to meet the needs of a rapid, iterative design process.)
The Flash Pro forum isn't even listed on the main page of Adobe Communities?  You have to search for it.  :-(

I'm going to weigh in here as someone is both a designer and developing enterprise-level apps in Flash. I'd write a book about the concepts I use, which I call "semantic Flash" if I thought there were enough people interested in learning a whole new way of developing Flash to make it worth investing the time.
I personally think the AS3 version of Flash is beautiful and elegant and the changes had to happen to make Flash a viable product for as long as it has lasted. However, what happened is that Macromedia dropped the ball when it came to Flash 9/AS3. I say Macromedia because the decisions that were made happened prior to the acquisition. For whatever reason, someone decided that large-scale development couldn't be done in Flash using the timeline, so they put all of their eggs in the Flex basket for that side of things. And really everything. If you recall, Flash Player 9 didn't actually work very well with the timeline, because Macromedia focused so many resources on making it work for Flex they didn't have much left for in Flash.
Just seeing how the timeline actually does function, though, I believe there originally was someone on the team who had a vision of how this could work amazingly well with the timeline. I think that person probably left unfortunately before this vision could be conveyed to anyone else for whatever reason. So we were left with a dichotomy where "real developers" don't use the timeline and "designers" are completely intimidated by the code side. And this was something originated by how Adobe documented Flash and Flex in 2007. We now have very few people who can cheerfully marry both sides, mainly because many people see doing this as a little bit "icky."
When I spot someone on these forums who I think has the ability and the interest to learn to do that, I'll try to coach them, but I know that I'm asking them to take a huge risk. In part that risk is because there are no resources on how to do it other than ones I wrote (and some of those resources are lost to the winds of history), but in part it's asking people to pick up parts of the functionality that haven't been fully beta tested because nobody does this. And you have to be really really good at this to even figure out what's going wrong, much less figure out a fix or a workaround.
No, I don't know what it would take to fix this situation. I sort of doubt that it's worthwhile trying to change it at this point. My experience with Adobe is if you try to change their direction, even if it would benefit them to change, at best they'll ignore you.

  • Flash Pro is ignoring changes to my base class when publishing / debugging

    Hi,
    I hope this will be in the correct section of the forum.
    I've been working with Actionscript 3 since a while now although most of the time I've just done straightforward coding using Flash Develop.
    This is the first time I'm building a more or less complex project in Flash Pro.
    Here's a quick outline of how the project is structured.
    There is a swf file which holds a large set of components. Things like Buttons, Sliders, complex List components, etc.
    All of them are written from scratch not using any existing components (reason being project requirements).
    As someone with a heavy programming background I've done as little as possible in the timeline / frames, most of my code lives in classes which are attached to the components I've created in Flash Pro.
    These classes handle all the functionality. These classes then usually inherit from a base class where some basic functionality lies that I need across all components.
    The components outlined above are all marked for export and lateron imported into other swf files where they are used.
    So far so good, all that works like a charm.
    Now here's the actual problem.
    Today I needed to make changes to the base class to change some fundamental behaviour across all components that inherit from said base class.
    The change in itself was fairly simple.
    However, every time I now try to debug or publish it will completely ignore any change I've made and use the previous version of my base class?
    I can go as far as completely emptying my base class and every time I debug or publish it will do so using the base class from before. I can see at runtime that it is the previous version because of the behaviour of the inherited components.
    That's what I don't get. Where does it take that version from? I tried clearing the publish cash, to no avail.
    I can pace tracers, nothing. If I add code to the base class and make an error it will complain so when I try to debug or publish but once fixed, it won't use any of it. It's still behaving as if it's using a previous version.
    What makes all this even weirder is that if I take that new code and place it into another class and inherit my components from this one, then the build will use that new verison with the new code. If I switch back to the old base class with exactly the same code inside it will ignore it again and once more behave as if its an older version of it.
    I've been looking around the net but simply can't find what this could be caused by.
    Now, sure, I could simply use a new class and inherit all my components from a different base class but that's rather unpractical.
    What I would like to know is, why does Flash Pro ignore any changes to this class? Is this an issue with how I inherit my component classes from a base class? I kind of doubt it because it has been working like a charm before.
    Could this be a Flash Pro issue?
    This is also not the first time I've come across this problem. The previous time however, after much tinkering, it went away. Today, it didn't. I would really like to get to the bottom of this.
    FYI: I'm running Flash Pro CC. I design my components in Flash Pro and do all my coding in Flash Develop.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hmm, my classes live in a subfolder of where my fla files live. (This sub folder again is divided into further folders to organise the code)
    I haven't actually setup any class paths. (default class path is set to .)
    If I set the default class path to the folder where my code lives I get a ton of errors telling my that my package names don't reflect the location of my files.
    edit: That was a mistake on my side. I've set the class path to where my code lives and made sure the package names still match up.
    Unfortunately it still ignores my base class (which lives in a sub folder of the defined class path)

  • Flash Pro in regards to Production Premium CS6

    I recently purchased Production Premium CS6, and as a filmaker, I have no idea what I would use flash pro for. Then again, I'm not exactly an expert. SO my question to you is: why is flash pro included in Production premium and what would a filmmaker use it for?

    You can create animations and add them to Premiere, or you can publish your video to flash

  • Why can't we submit bug reports for Flash Pro?

    I've been looking to submit some bug reports regarding CS5.5 Pro and there just isn't an option in the "Report a Bug/Feature Request" form. WHY not?? I paid for CS5.5 and autoformat breaks my code, but there's no way to report it.

    You aren't the first to have a problem with the choices provided.  It would be nice if they listed "Flash Pro" uniquely in the list of options at...
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
    ... since they dio for the rest of the Adobe products.  But you should feel free to pick any one of them.  I'd choose "Flash Authoring" since I've no idea what it is other than maybe something to do with Flash Pro.

    Why isn't Flash Pro CC App in my Creative Cloud Folder? It isn't on my iMac HD at all.

    My OS must be 64bit then. I downloaded the full CC suite earlier today. Thanks for trying.

  • How to keep Reader from being installed if running Pro? Running Acrobat X Pro. Occaisionally, a website with a PDF triggers Reader to be installed on my system. NEVER want reader (that's why i bought Pro). How do i keep Reader from EVER being installed?

    Running Acrobat X Pro.
    Occasionally, a website with a PDF triggers Reader to be installed on my system.
    NEVER want reader (that's why i bought Pro).
    How do i keep Reader from EVER being installed?

    I don't get a pop-up. Something triggers the Reader installer to be loaded on my system. This occurs without my knowledge. Then, the next time i go to open a PDF, instead of it opening immediately with Acrobat Pro, I get the first screen of the installation stuff for Reader (Accept/Decline Terms of use, etc.). At this point, i get out of the install, go into control panel and uninstall Reader (which is listed as a loaded program, even though i haven't finished the install). After i uninstall reader and open a PDF, it opens correctly with Acrobat Pro. This happens once or twice a month at least. Is it possible that the Adobe Acrobat Update Service task loads Reader on my system at some interval? How do i block Reader form EVER being installed or loaded?

  • My Flash Pro CC 2014 freezes while I'm working every single time and I can't figure out why

    I just bought Flash Pro CC about a month ago, and every time I open it and start using it, it freezes and I can't click on anything in the program or even close out of it normally.  I have to use Task Manager and force it closed.  I doubt that its my hardware, as I ran previous Flash Pros on it in the past with no problem.  Is anyone else having this issue?

    You might try to remove the preferences file from Flash, but I don't think that will solve the problem. You may need to resort to a clean installation: Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

  • Why is the Flash Pro CS6 interface not using the Gorgeous Grey as the others?

    It seems odd to leave out Flash Pro in particular. Even odder is the fact that I can't find any settings to change the darkness of the UI... I really expected at least that to be available.
    What gives?

    Inconsistency between or among applications in the artificial "suites" should come as no surprise.
    The "suite" concept is a fabrication of Adobe marketing and bean-counting types.  The engineering teams are totally independent of each other, they are not only in different buildings but in different cities and states of the American Union, even in different countries.
    The fact that they have little if any communication among them is highlighted by requests occasionally made in these forums by top Adobe engineers to let the other teams know when there are problems in one application that impact our workflow in another one.

  • Why isn't the Adobe Exchange Panel opening in Flash Pro CS6?

    It says it's installed but when I go to Window>Extensions>
    and then there is nothing, no other menu to go from.

    Hi HunterOSx and Svagers,
    How did you install the Adobe Exchange extension?
    I would recommend downloading the latest updates for Extension Manager from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/exchange/em_download/
    ...and downloading the latest Adobe Exchange ZXP from www.adobeexchange.com (it was updated on Friday). Make sure that you open the ZXP with Adobe Exchange CS6 for it to be available in Flash Pro CS6. If you also have Extension Manager CS5 installed, it's possible that you've accidentally installed the panel into Flash Pro CS5.
    Let me know how you get on.
    Best wishes,
    Fraser

    @dominic: I did the safe mode start and after the desktop appeard I did nothing and just shut down and start normally again. Is it that?  I was thinking that some window should have popped out of nowwhere and give me some diagnose... and tell me what to do... ?
    Then after a normal start I did the disk utility thing, I could only verify and not repair since it seems to be ok? :
    Then I tried the SMC reset according to the link you sent me, not sure if I did it right cause step 4 and 5 under
    Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own
    were somehow the same, after I released everything I didnt have to press power button separately (step5), the mac started already (after step4)
    @Lex: I'm really wondering about those two old applications
    1) I didn't find anything useful about camerawindow or canon tools, except that it helps connecting my canon powershot G15 camera with a smartphone... don't even says if it works with my camera model nor if it works with mavericks...
    2) ...Silverlight/OutOfBrowser/SLLauncher.app: Is it needed for what? After looking up it just said useful for webbrowsers, maybe better video quality etc. isn't that something good? if I delete it from my library will there e noteable differences when I use the internet?
    besides that i deleted and update like u suggested and did a check again:

  • BUG - in flash pro CC, 'bold' and 'italic' properties of TextFormat have no effect on rendered text

    Concise problem statement:
    If you compile with flash pro CC, and use the 'setTextFormat' method of a TextField, the 'bold' and 'italic' properties of the TextFormat argument have no effect on the rendered text. If you compile with flash pro CS6, the 'bold' and 'italic' properties work as expected.
    Apparently, with flash pro CC, the only way to make the text render correctly is to change the font name (add the suffix ' Bold', ' Italic', or ' Bold Italic'.) This means code which dynamically changes font styles only works in CS6 or CC, but not both. For example, if you use the 'bold' property the text renders bold in CS6 and regular in CC, whereas if you change the font name to add the suffix ' Bold', the text renders bold in CC and DOES NOT RENDER at all in CS6. This makes it difficult to transition a team from CS6 to CC.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Create an xfl with 2 TextFields on the stage, both with font "Trebuchet MS" and style "regular", one named boldTrueText containing the String "bold = true", one named fontNameText containing the String "fontName = Trebuchet MS Bold". Create 2 more TextFields on the stage for visual reference, both with font "Trebuchet MS", one with style "regular", one with style "bold".
    2. Add the following code to the Actions panel on frame 1:
    import flash.text.TextFormat;
    import flash.text.Font;
    var format:TextFormat = boldTrueText.getTextFormat();
    format.bold = true;
    boldTrueText.setTextFormat(format);
    format = fontNameText.getTextFormat();
    format.font = "Trebuchet MS Bold";
    fontNameText.setTextFormat(format);
    var fonts:Array = Font.enumerateFonts(), count:int = fonts.length;
    for (var i:int = 0; i < count; i++) {
        var font:Font = fonts[i];
        trace("fontName: " + font.fontName + ", fontStyle: " + font.fontStyle);
    3. Save, and compile with flash pro CS6 and flash pro CC.
    Results:
    With flash pro CS6, "bold = true" renders bold, and "fontName = Trebuchet MS Bold" DOES NOT RENDER.
    With flash pro CS6, the following is traced:
    fontName: Trebuchet MS, fontStyle: bold
    fontName: Trebuchet MS, fontStyle: regular
    With flash pro CC, "bold = true" renders regular, and "fontName = Trebuchet MS Bold" renders bold.
    With flash pro CC, the following is traced:
    fontName: Trebuchet MS, fontStyle: regular
    fontName: Trebuchet MS Bold, fontStyle: bold
    Expected results:
    The same text is rendered in both flash pro CS6 and CC. I don't know why this behavior was changed in flash pro CC - it causes silent failures in code which dynamically changes font styles. I expected the flash pro CS6 behavior to remain the same in CC, like so:
    With flash pro CC, "bold = true" renders bold, and "fontName = Trebuchet MS Bold" DOES NOT RENDER.
    With flash pro CC, the following is traced:
    fontName: Trebuchet MS, fontStyle: bold
    fontName: Trebuchet MS, fontStyle: regular
    If you don't want to break backward compatibility (any further), you could make both the behaviors work in flash pro CC, like so:
    With flash pro CC, "bold = true" renders bold (font is still "Trebuchet MS"), and "fontName = Trebuchet MS Bold" renders bold also.
    With flash pro CC, the following is traced:
    fontName: Trebuchet MS, fontStyle: bold
    fontName: Trebuchet MS, fontStyle: regular
    fontName: Trebuchet MS Bold, fontStyle: bold
    I submitted this bug with the bug form, and also with adobe bugbase (in case it isn't obsolete) - I'm just trying to maximize my chances of getting a fix.  Has anyone else encountered this bug?

    I just can't believe how there is ZERO documenation for any of this.  Flash's stylesheets have fontStyle and fontWeight properties, but they only recognize regular/italic and regular/bold respectively.
    This change in Flash CC completely breaks systems built in Flash CS6, and the font naming is actually arbitrary and is not a consistant combination of font name and style (e.g. "Eras ITC" family's bold font name is "Eras Bold ITC", but the bold version of Times New Roman is "Times New Roman Bold" (with Bold at the end, rather than the middle), and what's absolutely appaling is that the font name used at runtime is not exposed anywhere in the Flash IDE!!!  In the IDE you select a font family and font style independently, which is absolutely not what's used at runtime, because it actually uses a separate, arbitrarily named field in the font file for the font name. So we can't even know from within Flash what the proper runtime name is, unless we trace it out or open the font properties details tab in Windows explorer.
    It seems that Flash CC is always using the font "Title" that can be found in the properties of the font, NOT the font name displayed in Windows Font Preview or in Flash CC.  For example, the font name for Times New Roman Bold in Windows Font Preview is just "Times New Roman", but the font title in the properties/details tab is "Times New Roman Bold".  If they made the change to allow for specific fonts to be selected, that's fine, but it completely breaks HTML support in TextFields if it's not respecting bold and italic tags.
    This may actually be a trend on the web now, if you read this: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2013/02/14/setting-weights-and-styles-at-font-face-declara tion/ , it says: "If you’ve used one of FontSquirrel’s amazing @font-face kits, then you’re familiar with this approach to setting weights and styles. The CSS provided in every kit uses a unique font-family name for each weight and style, and sets the weight and style in the @font-face declaration to normal. [...] Notice that the font-family names are unique, with each font-family name accessing the appropriate Web font files."
    But there's just no mention of this in any documentation I can find.  What the hell.
    It's also helpful to realize that font and u tags have been deprecated in HTML5, while b and i tags have been repurposed since they still retain semantic meaning apart from style: https://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-b-and-i-tags

  • Flash Pro CS5  Convert to Flex Component and SWC export

    Hi,
    my question is about the Flash Pro CS5 and Flash Builder 4 (Flex 4) integration.
    My goal is simple - to make a simple graphic in a MovieClip and then export that for use in Flash Builder 4. I found out I have 2 ways of doing that:
    1) -> create the MovieClip with the graphic
        -> export it for ActionScript with a name of the class
        -> select the symbol in the library again and export SWC file. Total size of this SWC in my example is 24kb.
        -> put the SWC in the libs folder and use the class/component which should be put inside SpriteVisualContainer or UIMovieClip
    2) -> create the MovieClip with the graphic
        -> export it for ActionScript with a name of the class
        -> select it in the libraly and then select Commands -> Convert Symbol to Flex Component
    Now here we can do 2 things:
        -> select the symbol in the library and export SWC file. Total size here is 104kb.
        -> publish the whole project and use its SWC file.
    And last:
        -> put the SWC in the libs folder and use the class/component wherever you want because it's already extending UIMovieClip.
    So My point is that with the first way I need to use just one simple container to put my component into and I save like 80 kb. Why would I want to use the second way, just to be more comfortable or there are other reasons too?
    I was thinking that maybe I could put more flex converted components in the fla file so I would then export the swc with all of them being already flex components and that 80kb will be shared for all of them, which makes sense of using this feature, but if someone could confirm my thinking is right or there was some other better purpose or way of doing things in an optimised way, I will be glad to hear them. Thanks!

    Hi,
    I am using the first option while converting from flash to flex. Its easy and it saves lots of memory.

  • Has anyone been able to contact Adobe to learn why their Flash Player does not work on Mac OS 10.6.8, no matter how many updates you install?  This seems like a big error by Adobe.

    I have thee Mac computers with Mac OS 10.6.8, one of which is a Mac Pro.  No matter how many updates I install from Adobe, their Flash Player does not work on any of these 3 computers.  I don't know how to contact Adobe Systems about this problem, but I think it is their responsibility to make sure that their so-called "universal" software works proplerly on a relatively recent operating system like OS 10.6.8 that is still in widespread use.  When you install the updates, nothing happens -- not even an error message.  What is the point of a universal player that is not universal?  It works fine on my MacBook Pro with OS 9 Mavericks, but it does not work at all -- indeed, has never worked -- on my 3 Macs with OS 10.6.8.  Has anyone contacted Adobe Systems to find out why the Flash Player does not work with OS 10.6.8 and what they plan to do about it?

    Where are you getting Flash from?
    Get the appropriate dmg installer here and then run it.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html
    If it still won't install, do these two things: First uninstall any Flash by going into the second level Hard Drive Library>Internet Plug-ins, and trash the Flash Player.plugin and flashplayer.xpt. Then boot into Safe Boot, Shift at the startup chime (give it much longer than a usual boot) and run the installer while booted in Safe Boot.
