Why is my brain deserting me at this critical time?

Folks:
In a PHP page, I have this -
<?php echo('hello'."\n\r"); ?>
yet I do not get the newlines. 'Sup?

As a matter of practice, I always include line breaks with
<br> tags, to
keep the line lengths manageable in the source code:
<?php echo "hello<br>\r\n"; ?>
