Why is my desk top screen suddenly blue with arrow--my image is gone?

I reset the image with system preferences as usual, and it "took", but when I restart the machine the blue screen with the very large (low res) arrow reappears as the desk top image.
Otherwise my MacBook Pro seems fine. What's happening?

What resolution is your monitor set for? <br />
Whatever that setting is, it's going to be a lot taller than the Persona, and probably barely half the width - you would have to "Tile" it or have a bare space above and below it - if you "Stretched" that image to fill the screen it would be grossly distorted.

The Apple icon, usually at top left corner, appears in top right corner in a strip including all that left hand. When the computer is restarted, the screen goes back to normal. But I have to move the mouse to the far left of the screen and then up until it reappears on the far right hand side of the screen so that I can hit shut down button.
It seems to happen randomly though always on desk top and sometimes when I move mouse and computer switches on from rest mode. My large flat screen is relatively new.
The video card on this computer, which is approximately two years old, is Nvidia FeForce 9400M.
Any help would be welcome as my usual source of assistance is not available and I am not well versed in workings of the Mac although I have used one for many years.

That sounds like a Hardware problem.
You may be able to confirm that with Apple Hardware Test, or make an appointmenst for a free Genius Bar evaluation.

Why is the Bitlocker PIN screen sometime blue and sometimes black?

I am using Bitlocker on a Windows 8.0 laptop. I have noticed that sometimes when I boot up, the Bitlocker PIN screen has a blue background with white text and a white, full rectangle box to type the PIN in. Yet other times the Bitlocker PIN screen is black
with white text and the "box" to type the PIN in is just a blank space framed by braces.
This is not necessarily a problem since in either case I can put in my PIN and everything works correctly, I just want to know why are there two fundamentally different Bitlocker PIN screens and what causes one to appear instead of the other?

By the way, when I booted up today, I got the normal Blue BitLocker screen. I have noticed that if I restart the computer from Windows I always get the black screen, but on a fresh/cold boot it seems random which one I get.
Ok, I see the screen now, it mostly seems a fast boot causes this issue. Since the screen image depends on the behavior you shutdown the PC: "Restart" or fresh/cold boot. As a test, I suggest you disable the fast boot feature in Windows8 and
check if it is the culprit.
Type "powser button" in the search charm bar, then click "Change what the power buttons do", Untick the "Turn on fast startup (enabled)"
Check whether the screen remains black screen.

New MBPr when viewing safari in full screen mode it keeps switching to the desk top screen like I initiated a gesture

Everytime I am using safari in full screen mode my MBPr always switches back to desk top view within a matter of seconds. I can be typing a website or entering data in to a form and it still switches back. This has become very annoying. Type or copy paste the following;

Click Go then move the com.apple.desktop.plist file to the Trash
Restart your Mac then try setting a desktop image.

You sound like an Apple support guy who hasn't been able to answer my questions.
To respond to some of the points you made,
- I did not ignore Ocean20's suggestion. If you has read my post, you would have known that I took my phone to the apple service centre where they tried this restore on THEIR machines. I am assuming that Apple guys know how not to block iTunes. So I actually do not understand your point about me trying the hosts file changes on my machine. Do you not believe that apple tested this issue with the correct settings?
- you also give a flawed logic of why the issue is a hardware issue. You mentioned that If I thought that the issue was with the software, i should try a restore and getting it to work. The problem is that my error (23), and many others comes up when the restore fails. And you would be astonished to know that not all errors are hardware errors. Sometimes even software errors prevent restores. Funnily enough Apple itself mention that 'in rare cases, error 23 could be hardware related'.
- all Apple has done so far is replicate the issue. I don not know how anyone can conclude that the issue is a hardware issue.
And by the way, I am not certain that this is a software bug. Again if you read my Posts, you will notice I only want a confirmation,/proof that the issue is hardware related as they mention..

Whenever I'm using my Macbook Pro, the screen will sometimes suddenly go black. It does it even if I'm doing different things. It' not hard to get it back on, I just have to click the mouse or press the space key a couple of times, but then the mouse doesn't work for a couple seconds. It's not that I'm not using it (I know that if you don't move the mouse for too long, the screen goes black), there's definitely something wrong with the computer. What should I do? Thanks!!

You can also check your Energy Saver "Display Sleep" options.
Depending on your model Macbook Pro, this may apply - MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video. Affected computers were manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011.
MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues . The affected computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008.

Even though the machine is not being run hard or taxed, nor is the temp particularly high, the screen will suddenly go black.

Part of the many problems with the LG panel in it. The solution is to have the display replaced which is quite expensive. To find out what the options are take it in for a diagnostic test.
