Why is there so much space taken up by "other" on my iPhone?

"Other" is taking up 1.71GB on my iPhone and I dont understand why.... any way to get that space back?

Here is a thread that explains it all.

  • How can I reduce the space taken up by "other" on my iPhone 4?

I have a 16GB iPhone 4, with the latest iOS installed. For quite some time now (at least 6 months), the "Other" bar in the capacity graph when syncing in iTunes has taken up a lot of space. I tried restoring my phone a couple times, but it didn't fix it. The space taken up by Other hovers around 4GB, leaving me only a couple MB to a GB (depending on how much other stuff I put on my phone) of free space. Is this something like storage for applications (i.e. scores on levels of Angry Birds, browsing history in Safari, texts, calendar, and other info that doesn't fall under the criteria Audio, Video, Photos, or Apps), or is it something else?
I send and receive a lot of pictures and video via text or iMessage, so if it's because of that, would the solution be to delete the videos from the conversation?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Why is there so much space below a cell?

    http://www.daddydesktop.com/Typography2.html
This is a page on my Web site as created a few years ago. I am updating it.
As you see, in the column on the right, when a unit (cell) ends, there is probably about a half-inch or more of space between the ending words and the next paragraph/cell. My layout had about half that. On other pages in the site, I see pretty much what I had created in GL CS layout mode.
In the new site, when I view it in either Safari or Firefox, that space below is tripled. Yet I know of nothing I have done to make that happen.
In some cases, I have moved a line down one line with Shift-Return, in some cases, only with Return. In the left column, I have had to move some items down 8 or 9 Shift-Returns to align with material on the right. They may be causing the extra space at the bottom, even though I see them where I put them, in the middle.
Example: In the version you see, the words on the left, "Let us help you mix the right typefaces," are just a paragraph space below the paragraph above. In the new version, with the added returns, in both Layout and in browsers, those words align with "(For example: the tried-n-true..." on the right. Which is what I want.
But as mentioned, when the new one is viewed in two browsers, when I get to the end of a paragraph, let's say, after the words on the right, "substiturte for a really good type library," the space below has tripled. In Layout by the way, I have tightened up the cell so the cell ends just below where the type ends.
Could there be a single cause for that? I see that problem on no other page I am working on.
    Thanks.

Lose the grid. Lose the grid. Lose the grid
    I hate ambiguity.
What are you trying to say?
    OK I'm punchy.
    (a) Every spring my 4-year-old fridge runs loud for days then stops cooling then goes back to normal. Yesterday I spent 25 minutes on Whirlpool/KitchenAid hold and spoke to no one. I can usually handle anything but voicemailjail. Three times, each in spring, the controller board has been replaced. Now it seems to have repaired itself.
    (b) Two of my cats, AFAIK, 16.5 and 18.5 have a variety of attention-demanding and $$$$$$-demanding needs, all of them with emotional content for me. But if you know Yiddish or German you will understand when I say I am a shtarkeh! (I still remember a teensy bit of my grandparents' Yiddish, which they pronounced Eedish.)
    Lose the grid. "Uncle!"
    Thrilled these fora exist.

  • Why is there so much space dedicated to 'Other'?

I just restored my iPad and it kept telling me I didn't have enough free space to install apps. This is because whatever the 'other' category means is using it all up. What could possibly be using up all that space?

That is .... Notes, calendar entries, photos associated with contacts, Safari bookmarks, Safari history, email messages, text messages, app data and files, the camera roll. Basically anything that is not media content. Things that are not apps, photos, music, books, movies, and so on.
That really is not that much "other" depending upon what you have on the iPad. It is nothing to be concerned about in your case. If it sky rockets to 5 or 6 GB that usually indicates a corrupt sync or a corruption somewhere on the device. I think you are fine right now with regard to other.
But since you only have a 16GB iPad and you have only apps on the iPad, some of those apps may be storing lots of data that is using that other. You either need to delete some of those files or the apps themselves. You have to remember that apps will expand when they download so what you see as the size of the app in app store will expand once the app is downloaded and installed.
So bottom line is, you do need that "other". You don't want to remove it. It is content that your apps are using on the iPad. If you want to delete apps and the app data, then that other will decrease.

  • Why is there so much "other"

why is there so much space on the iPad called "other", and how can it be deleted?

    What is "Other"
It’s generally a combination of local caches from apps, browsers, mail, Messages, Reading List, saved games, app-specific documents and data, notes, and voice memos.
You can backup and restore to reduce "other" but they will start building up over time.

  • Why is there so much available space on my hard drive after installing Lion?

I just made the decision to  go ahead and install the new operating system "Lion"
I backed everything up to my Time Capsule and I have an older back up of everything on an external hard drive.
Now I have two questions and one task.
Why is there so much available space on my hard drive and where did my iPhoto library go after installing the new operating system?
My task is to restore my most up to date iPhoto library which I assume is on my time capsule.
How should I approach this task?

    Hi entresoft,
I am not sure how to do this. I am not a very literate computer person but have a vague idea of what you are suggesting.
If I do manage to figure out how to do what you have suggested will this restore my iPhoto Library and I assume maybe other files?
    Thanks!

i connected to itunes and it says i have 2.11 GB of space taken up under OTHER , i cant figure out what is taking up so much space can anyone help?

I believe the new IOS 8 system takes up 1.3 Gb on it's own.   Then plus anything else you may have loaded.

  • 8GB vs. 16 GB - How Much Space Taken by Default Apps?

I plan to use the Touch mainly for calendar, contacts, task (Data-Wiz) and browsing web and e-mail. Maybe a few songs, but focus is on getting organized through access to above info which will be synced with Outlook 2007 on Windows desktop.
Question - how much space do the default apps take up?
My Outlook pst file is 70 meg.
E-mail is 328 meg, but is the e-mail downloaded to the Touch or just viewed online?
From what I know now, the 8GB Touch seems more than satisfactory in terms of capacity. What are your thoughts?
    Thanks.
    Mark

i don't think that was the question Mark, but i think the answer is a similar one.
as far as i know the OS software (which is basically all the default apps, and is the same for all available sizes) takes up something like a GB of space, so 7GB out of an 8GB, and presumably 15GB of a 16GB iPod touch is left for the user to put their things on it.
when you add details to it, it obviously takes up more space, but not much. (i'm afraid i'm not sure enough to be more accurate).
really the major consideration for which size to go for, is how much music/podcasts/video you plan to keep on it. most apps only take up a few MB, though there are a few which are much larger.

  • How to check how much space taken by each account

Could you kindly advise how to check how much space is taken by each account?
    Thanks and regards

For more information use a utility such as OmniDiskSweeper or put in a larger hard drive.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

  • Space taken up by "other"

Is there anyway you can lower the amount of space that is taken up by "other"?

An "other" largeer than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.  Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
To restore to factory settings/new iPod see:

  • Why is there a giant space under these cells?

My Web site, existing and in revision, both have a number of pages made the same way, but one works differently. I need a clue what to "fix."
    Each page has a grid.
    Each grid has a table.
Each table has two equal-width columns.
Each table has a random number of rows.
Each cell in the right-hand column ends with text and a period.
The cell immediately below begins with a horizontal rule full width.
Previewing in Mac Safari, all look just right.
(Odd observation. Though in GL there is no added line space below the last word of text and above the HR that follows, in the browser, there is about 1/4-inch of space, equal to about two lines of text, and this is exactly what I want.  Why GL has no space but the browsers do have space, I am curious. But I am very happy for this effect.)
    But on one page,
    one page only,
    same treatment,
it does not look right. In fact, on that page, below each cell that ends with a word and a period and above the HR immediately below, Safari has about an inch or more of blank space, and in Firefox (which I seldom deal with), it may double that to a big "hole."
    Could thi sbe why?
On that page, in one cell in the left column I have used shift-return plus return in combination several times so an item in the left aligns visually with a related item in the right. This is because there is more text on the right side and I want the related subhead in the left to drop down to align with the copy on the right. In another left-hand column on that page, I have used the shift-return and return combination a larger number of times so a logo aligns with the bottom of that cell.
Could the spaces I added within each of two left-hand cells be screwing up the modest spacing belwo the last line of text that I am seeking to achieve, and that I have achieved on all other pages?
    Thank you.

    > try duplicating the page and lose the grid, just use a table, with heights left at auto
    Kath, here's what I did:
    New page, no grid.
Drag the component object over. Drag the table over.
View it in Safari as I usually do,
The problem did NOT go away.I suspect that whatever the spacing problems are, they are now built in to the component and table and to avoid them I'd have to start from scratch, retype everything, which I may do.
However I did not know what "heights left at auto" means. Plz xplain and I'll try that.
I also did a variation of what you suggested: dupe the page and delete the grid. I did something similar. Just removed the grid and viewed it in Safari. Same result. (Did not save the changes of course.)
What is most confusing is that that same grid and treatment is used on many other pages which do NOT have that problem. Some weird gremlin in that page.

  • Why is there so much noise on the discrete lines of my PXI-7831-R?

    Good day!
We are attempting to emulate encoders that communicate using SSI at 1MHz.  The traffic between our product under test and the encoder is over an RS-422 electrical bus.  Therefore, we have a MAX491 transceiver that converts the clock lines to TTL and our data lines to RS-422.  The problem is this: every time the TTL clock line pulses low or high, there is a great deal of ringing on the data line...so much so that the chip is interpreting it as a state change, causing bad data to be transmitted.  The addition of a needed second encoder setup to the mix (using more lines on the FPGA card and another MAX chip) is only exasperating the situation more.
We are unsure why the line would be ringing so badly.  Is there some kind of additional circuitry we need in this situation?
    Dan M.

Excellent explanation Ben(kudos) . I often make this very short by saying that the signal will be confused. If it do not meet the same condition as it had then it left   This true for (almost) all phenomenon within physics like light as an example.

  • Why is there an empty space on the right of my page when previewed in browser?

I've followed the guidelines on the design section of Muse but when I preview the page in the browser, I can scroll right and there be more of the page that hasn't been designed. I'm not sure what Pinning is but does it have something to do with that? I'm pretty sure it's an easy fix but I'm new to Muse and can't figure it out! Please Help!

    Here's the site...
    Home
The browser window is whatever automatically comes up, but it loads filling the whole browser window. The problem is that you can scroll into empty space.
I really don't understand pinning at all, could you give me a brief explanation of what it is or a link to a tutorial video that can. Thank you so much for the help guys!
Also, you'll notice the facebook feed I got from the facebook developers site isn't working. They say the message displayes comes up when the "author then deletes the post or changes the post audience selector from public"
All our posts are public so don't know who to fix this?
    Again, thanks for your help!
