Why must this method invocation be caught?!

Hi there. I have this following piece of code:
public class Dog extends Animal {
     public static void main(String[] args) {
          Animal animal = new Dog();
          System.out.println(animal.getAge(args[0]));
     int getAge(String arg) {
          return Integer.parseInt(arg);
class Animal {
     int getAge(String x) throws Exception {
          return 5;
}Ok, I compiled this an received this notification from the compiler:
Dog.java:4: unreported exception java.lang.Exception; must be caught or declared
to be thrown
                System.out.println(animal.getAge(args[0]));
                                                ^
1 errorIm a little confused here as to why I am receiving this notification...
The reason being is firstly I thought that when you override a method you can declare fewer or narrower checked
exceptions than the method that is being overridden and secondly,
this is a polymorphic method invocation on line 4 as Dog's getAge method is being called,
not class Animal's getAge method.
Any clarification would be well received,
thank you indeed.

you don't get that compile-time error. Why do you get it with the first code? In expression animal.getAge(args[0]), variable animal is of type Animal, and Animal's getAge method signature includes "throws Exception". Typing is done statically, at compile-time, hence the syntax error.Im not sure im entirely understanding.
I thought that in relation to overridden instance methods, the Object type determines which method
will be invoked at runtime. Yes.
So in this case wont the Dog getAge method be invoked? Yes.
Im just a little confused as my book says that
when a method overrides an inherited instance method it can declare fewer or narrower checked exceptions,
Thanks for the input & regards.That's also true. I think what you are missing is the realization that compiler errors are based on static type information not runtime information.
Consider this method:
void f(Dog d, Animal a) {
    d.getAge("");
    a.getAge("");
}The method invocation d.getAge("") doesn't throw Exception, because that is how you overrode getAge in class Dog.
The method invocation a.getAge("") may throw a checked exception, because that is how the method is defined in class Animal. So the compiler will complain about this line: either catch or propagate the exception. Note that this compiler error is independent of what object a refers to -- a could be pointing to a Dog, it doesn't matter. Only the static typing matters at compile-time.

  • Fleet phones: Why must each user have their own App Store account?

    I've purchased roughly 25 iPhones for my employees and am trying to lumber through the tedious process of managing these as fleet assets.  There are a handful of mission-critical apps I'd like to deploy.  I've signed up with an MDM platform (Bushel).  I've enrolled in both of Apple's fleet programs (VPP and DEP).  And, still, I'm running into precisely the obstacle I'm needing to get around:  the requirement that every user has their own individual App Store account, with a Credit Card number on file, etc.
    Why must this be?  These are company-owned phones.  Most of my employees are unionized and, quite frankly, the union is none too happy about the nature of the apps I'm deploying (which have to do with GPS tracking and time/attendance).  I simply cannot require my union employees to sign up for an account in their names and require a credit card number.
    Even lowly Blackberry figured this out a long time ago.  If Apple is going after more fleet business, they need to become more fleet friendly.

    I did some searches before my post, but actually found some things AFTER I made my post that sounded encouraging. If I understand correctly, we should be able to continue sharing the AppleID we use to buy apps and music on all of our devices. We can configure our personal devices and computers to use separate personal iCloud accounts, but somehow share the music and apps with each other. I guess I'm still not clear on how it'll work. :-)

  • Why does this abstract class and method work without implement it?

    hi,
    I have seen many times that in some examples that there are objects made from abstract classes directly. However, in all books, manual and tutorials that I've read explain that we MUST implement those methods in a subclass.
    An example of what I'm saying is the example code here . In a few words that example makes Channels (java.nio.channel) and does operations with them. My problem is in the class to make this channels, because they used the ServerSockeChannel class and socket() method directly despite they are abstracts.
       // Create a new channel: if port == 0, FileChannel on /dev/tty, else
       // a SocketChannel from the first accept on the given port number
    private static ByteChannel newChannel (int netPort)
          throws Exception
          if (netPort == 0) {
             FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream ("/dev/tty");
             return (fis.getChannel());
          } else {
    //CONFLICT LINES
             ServerSocketChannel ssc = ServerSocketChannel.open(); //<--I have never thought do that!! Anyway, how it is static method may work.
             ssc.socket().bind (new InetSocketAddress (netPort)); //<--but here, this method (socket) is abstract. WHY RETURN A SOCKET????????  this mehod should be empty by default.
             System.out.print ("Waiting for connection on port "
                + netPort + "...");
             System.out.flush();
             ByteChannel channel = ssc.accept();
             ssc.close();
             System.out.println ("Got it");
             return (channel);
       } I test this code and works fine. So why can it be??
    Also, I read that the abstract classes can't have static methods. Is it true???
    Please Help!!
    PS: i have seen this kind of code many times. So i feel that I don't understand how its really the abstract methods are made.
    PS2: I understand that obviously you don't do something like this: *"obj = new AbstractClass(); "*. I dont understand how it could be: ServerSocketChannel ssc = ServerSocketChannel.open(); and the compiler didn't warn.

    molavec wrote:
    ServerSocketChannel ssc = ServerSocketChannel.open(); //<--I have never thought do that!! Anyway, how it is static method may work.
    The static method creates an instance of a class which extends ServerSocketChannel, but is actually another non-abstract class.I thought that, but reading the documentation I saw that about open() method:
    Opens a server-socket channel.
    The new channel is created by invoking the openServerSocketChannel method of the system-wide default SelectorProvider object.
    The new channel's socket is initially unbound; it must be bound to a specific address via one of its socket's bind methods before connections can be accepted.
    ...and the problem is the same openServerSocketChannel is abstract, so i don't understand how it could return a ServerSocketChannel.There is a concrete implementation class that has implemented that method.
    I guess that really the open() method use a SelectorProvider's subclase but it doesn't appear in the doc.It doesn't need to. First, you don't care about those implementation details, and second, you know that if the class is abstract, it must use some concrete subclass.
    Ok, I speak Spanish by default (<-- this sounds like "I am a machine", ^_^' ). So, I didn't know how to say that the method would be {}. Is there a way to say that?? I recommendable for me to know, for the future questions o answers.Not sure what you're saying here. But the other respondent was trying to explain to you the difference between an abstract method and an empty method.
    // abstract method
    public abstract void foo();
    // empty method
    public void bar() {
    Which class does extend ServerSocketChannel? I can not see it.It may be a package-private class or a private nested class. There's no need to document that specific implementation, since you never need to use it directly.

    my iphone app store keeps asking me to update my payment method every time a go to download something from the store , it says my method is about to expire so when i re-enter my card information it keeps saying that my card is declined , why is this?

    What sort of card are you trying to use ?
    If it's a debit card then I don't think that they are still accepted as a valid payment method - they are not listed on this page and there have been a number of posts recently about them being declined
    If it's a credit card then is it registered to exactly the same name and address (including format and spacing etc) that you have on your iTunes account, it was issued by a bank in your country and you are currently in that country ? If it is then you could check with the card issuer to see if it's them that are declining it, and if not then try contacting iTunes support and see if they know why it's being declined : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

    Hi,
    I think you are trying to test the Hello world EJB example shipped with the product. As a first
    step I would recomend you to go through every line of the document on deploying this application,
    since, I too have experienced many errors while trying to deploy the sample applications, but on
    following the documentation, I subsequently overcame all the errors and have been working with the
    applications. So please follow the steps in documentation and let me know, if you still encounter any
    issues.

  • Automatically call specific method at other method invocation~ish?

    I have a class which basically acts as a wrapper around a List. It contains a List object and some methods that do something with that list.
    Now, in order to prevent exceptions, I've made a basic method that just checks if the List field is null and, if so, it will create a new ArrayList and chuck it in that field.
    Right now, I just have a call to that particular method in each other method that performs an operation on the list, like so:
    public class SomeClass<T> {
       private List<T> list;
       private void checkList() {
         if ( list == null) {
           list = new ArrayList<T>();
      public int method() {
        checkList();
        return list.doSomething();
      }Is there a way, prefferably a native Java way, to automatically have the checkList() method called before each and any method invocation? As in, whenever a method is called in the SomeClass, Java / the JVM automatically calls the checkList method?
    }

  • Multithread remote method invocation problem

    Hello all
    I have simple method that is entry point of CORBA remote invocation method
    Inside it I have some kind of Logic I need to perform the this logic is inside method and I like
    That each method that performs logic will be executed in its own thread ( from thread pool )
    this method also returns parameters by reference back to the server .
    here is example:
    public boolean RemothMethod(Object obj1,Object obj2){
         //this is where I allocate thread from thread pool to invoke the logic method
         ThreadPool.getTask(LogicMethod(Object obj1,Object obj2));
    }But the problem I have here that I can get several "RemothMethod" calls
    And the returned Parameters can be from the wrong thread call .
    My question is how can I force the right thread to return the right parameters to the "RemothMethod" call

    I have simple method that is entry point of CORBA

    Inside it I have some kind of Logic I need to perform
    the this logic is inside method and I like
    That each method that performs logic will be executed
    in its own thread ( from thread pool )Why? Each remote method is already being executed in its own thread.
    //this is where I allocate thread from thread pool
    l to invoke the logic method
    ThreadPool.getTask(LogicMethod(Object obj1,Object obj2));What are these APIs?
    But the problem I have here that I can get several
    "RemothMethod" calls
    And the returned Parameters can be from the wrong
    thread call . Something wrong with the ThreadPool API you seem to have written.
    My question is how can I force the right thread to
    return the right parameters to the "RemothMethod" callGet rid of it and execute whatever you need to execute directly in the remote method body. There is no advantage to what you're trying to do. You already have a thread per concurrent client executing the remote method; you're trying to stall those threads and create yet more threads from an evidently non-working ThreadPool. This seems quite pointless.

    If you look at the docs for Collections.sort(List<T> list) you'll see it is declared as:
    static <T extends Comparable<? super T>> void Collections.sort(List<T> list) Unfortunately, although File implements Comparable, it doesn't actually implement Comparable<File> or even Comparable<Object>, so I guess it can't satisfy the bound.
    You can get it to compile by removing the explicit type argument and casting to the raw type List, but that's not very nice.
    This seems like an oversight to me - File already has both int compareTo(Object o) and int compareTo(File pathname) so I don't see why it can't implement Comparable<File>. This isn't the only such case in the API though, so maybe I'm missing something.

    This perspn seems to be having the same issue;
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5051892
    and I agree I don't have "E" drive either!

    I've found a solution to my plight - I don't know if it'll work for you or help you try something that MAY fix it.
    I use a common code set which includes the Application.cfc from a CF Mapping - So, in the application.cfc in the actual website I do this:-
    <cfinclude template="/UberDirectory/Application.cfc">
    Then, in the /UberDirectory/Application.cfc, I was initialising a CFC which checks if the datasource was created for the website. The datasource checking code attempts to log into the Admin API and check & create if necessary the datasource.
    This has previously worked without fail for me - But in this instance it failed!! I was doing two things wrong - Firstly, the CFC should only be called in the Application.cfc in the onRequestStart section as the Application had to be initialised first - This is maybe because I've invoked the application.cfc in a "non-standard" manner.
    Secondly, once I'd moved the CFC invocation into oNRequestStart I saw the following error:-
    The string COOKIE.CFAUTHORIZATION_uber-directory is not a valid ColdFusion variable name.
    I had this as the app name .... <cfset this.name = 'uber-directory'>
    Changedthe dash to an underscore and I was away and could once again check the datasources
    Hope it helps
    Martin

    My MacBookPro with Mountain Lion seems to be making copies of files in my download folder.  Why is this happening and how do I stop it?

    This issue has nothing to do with Time Machine or local snaphsots. No built-in feature of OS X does what you describe.
    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
    These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
    Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
    Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
    Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
    Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
    Copy (command-C) the selected text to the Clipboard. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. You can do that by copy-and-paste as well. Omit the final line ending in “$”. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
    This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. It won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
    Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
    osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
    Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • What is wrong with this method?

    When i try to compile
         public double generateXPos()
              double d = Math.random()*100;
              if (d > 37.0)
                   generateXPos();
              else
                   return d;
    it says: "this method must return a result of type double", bit doesn't it do so?!?
    By the way I am using eclipse v. 3.0.1
    Thanks in advance,
    Floesch

    Because i could not think of this way of doing that,
    for i am a bloody beginner.A "bloody" beginner? You should wipe yourself off with a damp cloth.
    Could you tell me how to do it then?I can point you in the right direction. The first line of your method generates a number between 1 and 100. Either you intentionally wrote it to work that way, in which case you should very easily be able to re-write it to generate a number between 1 and 37 instead; Or, perhaps you copied it from somewhere else not understanding what it does, in which case you should take the time to understand it before continuing.
    Either way, as you now know that the first line generates a number between 1 and 100, you should be able to make a good guess at how to change it so that the generated number is between 1 and 37. If nothing at all springs to mind here, then I really genuinely do believe you aren't the kind of person that's gonna do well as a programmer.
