Why won't Pages open old AppleWorks files?

I have some very old word processing files which I wrote in AppleWorks. I'm having trouble opening these files.
When I attempt to open them in Pages, I get the following message:
IMPORT ERROR
"The document was created with an unsupported version of AppleWorks."
Any sugestions?
Many thanks.

  • Can't open old AppleWorks files on new MacBook Pro w/Snow Leopard

Just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro, did the migration from my old (2 yrs) MacBook via FireWire. Many of the old application icons are not appearing in my Dock, just Question marks ???. When I click on a ?, it indicates the name of that app which was there on the old MacBook, but there's no icon & I can't open the app from there. I can't find my Adobe Reader app, & several others, on the hard drive. Maybe I can find a work around for those....
BUT - zillions of files in the old AppleWorks/ClarisWorks files open in sometimes unreadable text, with all formatting gone. I NEED these files!! Please help!!

Thanks for your reply. When I try opening an AppleWorks documents with Pages as you suggested I get the message that the AppleWorks document is damaged.
Ahh...then it may actually be damaged. All of my old AppleWorks docs (word-processing docs) are opening just fine with Pages. On the other hand, if the AW doc is a drawing or database doc then Pages might not be able to open it. If the AW doc is a spreadsheet, it might open with Numbers.
Would you suggest that I use Migration Assistant to transfer my older files from my iMac to my MacBook (rather than using the thumb drive?) Will it ask me about overwriting files? My concern is that it may erase some changes to newer versions of documents that were on the thumb drive.
I do have the installation disk for my MacBook and all disks for the iMac.
No, If you still have your AppleWorks installation disk, I would suggest installing it and trying to open the 'damaged' docs that way. Later, if an item won't open in Pages but will open in AW, then resave it in AW as a generic format that Pages will open. In this way you can move these docs from the now unsupported AW and into Pages format. If we wait too long, we may not be able to install AW at some point in the future and then your old docs will be orphaned.

  • Need help opening old Appleworks file

Hi all I have been searching the forums and seem to come up with well lets say I'm screwed,,,I am trying to help out my uncle who had a mac back in the day and had made some what appears to be some appleworks documents that I cant open, the documents are on floppies which I was able to pull some pictures off and convert them to .jpeg's but I cant open the other files,,,I have tried OpenOffice and Office for Macs but no luck,,,can anyone help with this or tell me how to do this,,I'm not real good with Macs seeing i've been only using one for 6mths ,,,,

You could use AppleWorks 6 in OS X or AppleWorks 5 in Classic to open the files. You could try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name). Hardcore Mac sells AppleWorks 6.2.4.
If there are just a few files (less than 10), you can e-mail them to me & I will convert them (to text, Word, Excel, PDF) & send them back.

  • Why won't Pages open my .Pages file?

Today I tried to open 5 important .Pages documents I created in March 2014 using the latest version of Pages that was then available, and I keep getting the message '"x.pages" can't be opened.' with no further explanation. I've tried opening the files on both my iMac and my Macbook Pro, and exactly the same thing happens. I'm using Pages 5.2 on both computers. I know absolutely nothing I can do to fix the problem.
Any suggestions? I really need these files for my study - they are lecture notes for an important project I'm working on this week!

You created your Pages documents with a version of Pages older than v5.2 (Apr 1 update), and by latest available, that would imply v5.1.
Sign into iCloud dot com and use Pages in the iWork for iCloud beta. See if this Pages can open your documents. If it can, I would Send a Copy as Word document back to your Mac for lecture note resurrection.
I have had intermittent issues with .pages documents created in v5.1 that resist opening in v5.2 — but eventually do open on subsequent attempts.
If you had Pages ’09 v4+ already installed on your Mac prior to the v5 upgrade, it will be located in /Applications/iWork '09. Drag/drop that version of Pages to your Dock, and avoid using v5.2 for critical work. It just isn't ready yet.

  • Why won't pages open my document even tho it is updated

Pages says I need to update to a newer version to open documents, but it is updated, there is not an old version stored on the Mac and it still wont open?

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewforum.php?f=22&sid=3527487677f0c 6fa05b6297cd00f8eb9&mforum=iworktipsntrick
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • Why won't Pages open on iPad2?

II've tried to sync, unsync, re-sync, update, etc etc, with no luck.  When I select Pages on the iPad, it flashes quickly, then returns to the screen, but does not open the app.  Any ideas?

Have you tried resetting your iPad by holding down both the Home and Sleep buttons until the Apple logo appears then letting go? This does a "reboot" of the device and often cures these problems? Also, have you checked that you have ample free storage space left?
If nothing else works, you can also connect it to your computer, go into iTunes and try to restore it.

  • Why won't FireFox open local .html files (when using "open file")?

I teach hand coding and use FireFox to grade my students work. I also tell them to use this browser to review their own work. If they cannot navigate to their files on their desktop I will have to switch to another browser. I know it is something from the latest version... as I have been using FireFox for the last 5 years as my classroom browser of choice.

Firefox should still be able to open files using open files.
I use Windows so things may differ slightly but the option to open files is available but not visible by default, I can get the option to browse for files using: keyboard keys'''Alt , F , O'''
My directory structure and path may differ slightly but I am also able to key directly into the location bar something such as '''''file:///C:/'''''
A third option would be simply to click on the relevant HTML file and use the option to open, or open with Firefox. Such files may also be bookmarked.

  • How do i open an Appleworks file now that I am running Mavericks and Pages?

How do I open an Appleworks file now that I am running Mavericks and Pages?

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available - the newPages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents and an ability to open ClarisWorks documents has been reported: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings). LibreOffice will open simple Draw documents but I found it very unreliable with complex ones.
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in the older versions of  Numbers - the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
Presentations can be opened directly only in the older versions Keynote; again, the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
To use other programs, or open Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first, which means you need a way to run it.
If you have upgraded to Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks and have AppleWorks documents you cannot open, then you should be able to install Snow Leopard on an external hard disk and start from that (provided that the Mac did not come with anything higher than Snow Leopard originally installed); and success has been reported in running Snow Leopard Server under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: Snow Leopard Server is available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price (at the time of writing) and is preferable to using ordinary Snow Leopard which is quite tricky. I haven't tried this myself: use at your own discretion. You can then run AppleWorks as an emergency measure.

  • I/O error trying to open old AW files

I have hundreds of old Appleworks files from an older version (5.0) and when I try to open them with my new Intel based iMac using Appleworks 6.2.9 it says
    " An I/O error occurred".
All I'm trying to do is open the file - not print or anything else. I can't figure it out.
    Need help.
    Larry
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yvan Koenig has said he has some AppleWorks 5 files fail to open in AppleWorks 6 with the I/O error. I've never had a problem opening any AppleWorks 5 files whether they were created on a Mac or PC.
Are you sure that some of these files aren't ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files? AppleWorks 6.2.9 (the current version) can't open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files & gives an I/O error. There doesn't appear to be a way to predict which files will cause problems. I've had it happen & not happen with all AppleWorks file types. These files can be opened by any other version of AppleWorks 6.
I'm not clear if it's one file or all of the files you can't open. If it's just one or a few, I'd think there is some corruption in the file. If it's a lot (more than half) & you're sure they are AppleWorks 5 files, some basic troubleshooting might help.
First step, delete the AppleWorks 6 preferences as they may be corrupt, particularly the translator cache. See my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for more info.
Did you move these files from one Mac to another using a USB flash drive or other removable device? If the device is PC-formatted, some information in the files may have been lost in the transfer. Another user tip addresses this problem - AppleWorks 6 won't open my AW 5 files.
I'd be willing to take a look at two or three of these problem files for you & see if I can figure out where the problem is. E-mail them to me with a subject line of "I/O errors." Just click my name in blue next to this post. My public e-mail address is in the biography section.

  • Opening my appleworks file in word 2007

I have a PC at work and used to have a mac at home (I will be getting a new mac in a few months). I have an appleworks file that I saved a while ago that I am trying to open on Word 2007 at work, but there isn't the converter like word 2003 had. Any ideas how I can open this file? Thanks in advance
    Jolene

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Jolene
I never have had good luck opening AppleWorks documents in Word 2003 on my work PC. Where Word 2004 on my Mac opens them almost flawlessly, they will open on the PC, but full of "garbage text." A one-line AppleWorks word processing document became 26 pages in Word. Of course, Word won't even know it can open the AppleWorks file if it doesn't have the .cwk extension. And it can only open word processing files.
I think you'll have much better luck if you save your AppleWorks documents as Word before sending them. Be sure to add the .doc extension because AppleWorks won't do it for you.

  • Opening old AW files

I am in the process of updating some archived files which included a batch of old AppleWorks Files. I cannot seem to get Excel or Numbers to open these files. It says that the proper translators cannot be found. Is there a program or a way to install the translators so I can open and update these older files?
    Thanks for the help.
    Glen

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I've never been able to get any version of Excel to open an AppleWorks spreadsheet. The iWork applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files.
I think the best option is to get AppleWorks 6.2.4.
If they are AppleWorks/ClarisWorks 5 (not earlier), you could try icWord & icExcel from Panergy Software. You can download a trial to see if it will work.
A more expensive option is MacLink Plus from DataViz, but it does have translators for earlier versions of ClarisWorks.
You could also contact a local user group that may have someone with AppleWorks 6 that could convert the files for you.

  • Cannot open old Appleworks spreadsheet document

I've got an old spreadsheet document created/modified in 1997 that won't open in Appleworks or Numbers. I get "an I/O error occurred". I have several other similar documents that were created in 1999 and later, and they all open. Any hints on how to get that old file opened? Thanks,
    Don

That is a very kind offer. As it turns out, I have a bunch of old Appleworks files that won't open. It seems to be right around the 1999 year and earlier that won't open, I get the "I/O error". Trying to open them in Numbers gives me an "unsupported version" error.
Files from 2001 open in Appleworks but I get a dialog that says they were created with a previous version of Appleworks and a copy will be opened. At least they open and when I save the new copies they open normally in Appleworks and Numbers. Files from about 2002 and later all seem to open normally in both programs.
Basically, I'm going through old files that I would still like to have access to in anticipation of Lion's discontinued support of anything PowerPC. These files are old business files that I don't need at the moment, but still want to have for reference. I'm still running PowerPC computers, but need to upgrade soon, and it looks like a lot of perfectly good stuff is no longer going to work.
I thought I had an old Appleworks CD but can't find it. Do you think an ebay approach will turn up a disc with a version prior to 6.2.9?

  • Why won't excel read my csv file created with the powersell out-file automatically.

I wrote a PowerShell script that creates a CSV formatted file.  The script simply creates a comma delimited string for each entry and adds it to a collection.  Then the out-file command write it to a file.
When you open it with Excel each line is put into one cell.  If you import the file and specify the "," as the delimiter, it imports just fine.  If the data is saved out again as a csv file,  the file is about half the size and opens
    just fine with excel.
If you open the original file and the file created by Excel with notepad, they look the same.
So the files are different in size, contents look the same, but Excel won't automatically open the original file.
Any ideas of why this happens?  Also PowerShell and Excel are both running on Server 2012 R2.  Excel is a remote app.
If I do an export-CSV, I get some kind of information about the object.
    Here is the script:
    foreach ($group in $groups)
       $header += '"' + $group.name + '",'
       $CSVdata = @()
       $CSVdata += $header
       # Create a user entry
       $users = Get-ADUser -filter * |select SamAccountname, Name | sort SamAccountName
       foreach ($user in $users)
          $Groupmembership = Get-ADPrincipalGroupMembership -Identity $user.SamAccountName
          $userentry = '"' + $user.SamAccountName + '",'
          $user
          foreach ($group in $groups)
              if ($Groupmembership.SamAccountName -contains $group.SamAccountName) { $userentry += '"X",'}
              else { $userentry += '"",' }
           $CSVdata += $userentry
          $CSVdata
          Out-File -inputobject $CSVdata -FilePath c:\batch\GroupMembership.csv

Ok the script works exactly like I want it.  Thank you very much.
I am trying to understand the script but I am unable to figure out what the line "$keys=$t.Keys|%{$_}"
does.  I figured ".keys" was a method but my search for it comes up blank.  Do you have a reference you can point me to?

  • Cannot open old appleworks/clarisworks docs

I got a new man mini, my 3.5 year old mac died. I have a lot clarisworks and appleworks docs. I cannot find appleworks or claris works on the new computer. Is is possible the computer does not come with it? If not where do I get it? And will the new program open my old docs? I see in the apple store you can buy iWorks for 80 bucks, is this what I have to do? I thought appleworks came with the old system. Is there a program that came with the computer that will open these docs?

Ok, I got iWorks09. I still cannot open documents created in 2006 with the .cwk appendage that were created in the graphics portion of the old program, I think they are called graphics docs? Anyways I have a lot of files that I created in 2006 or before for our church carnival, tickets, fliers, etc. None of these docs were created with the word processing portion of the old program, I used the graphics portion and they will not open. When I get info on the .cwk file I want to open and it says its a text doc. I know they are not text docs but this is what the computer recognizes. Am I screwed? Will I ever be able to open these files? I am able to open old .cwk files that are word processing only, no graphics
