Get video file info

Hi guys,
I need to write a simple applet which loads a video file (.avi, .rmvb, .mpg, .mkv) using FileChooser and reads its:
- fps
- resolution
- codec
Something like TellMeAboutDivx but in applet version.
I spent some time looking for some hints, but so far I didin't find any solution.
I'd appreciate any solution or helpful links.
Greetz,
Gh0st

Hi if you don't mean that you have to read it prior to opening the file.... I've basicly only worked with the capture part of JMF, as I gave up on it and made my own replacement.. but..
I would assume that there should be some great deal of similarities, have a look at :
FormatControl
Format
VideoFormat
formatControl = (FormatControl)player.getControl ( "javax.media.control.FormatControl" );
currFormat = formatControl.getFormat();
if ( currFormat instanceof VideoFormat ){
currentFormat = (VideoFormat)currFormat;
imageSize = currentFormat.getSize();
I hope there are some similarities to that, in worst case scenario have a look at the specs for the formats you are most likely to use. That way you can also get information prior to opening the files. I haven't done that myself since forinstance directshow has premade functions for this, but I've had to do it for audio formats for extracting data ds doesn't care about :) In this case id3v2 was a bit of work for making it work with all files (spits on "TSIZ" tag/frame), while forinstance id3v1 was a walk in the park. You know back in the old days we had to walk 20 miles with snow to up under our arms while wolves chased us just to get to school! And we had to make most of our picture encoders/decoders our selves to(well this part is at least serious). With most of these stoneage formats you had a header inserted either at the start or at the rear with all basic information such as version, width, height, bpp, compression type and usually tons of reserved that was never used. I bet some of these video formats are similar, and getting that info is a walk in the park.
Hmm you are making an applet.. I haven't messed around with that to much, but you cannot use JNI/JNative with that right because of the sandbox restrictions?
cheers and burps

  • Getting video files to your iPod

    Q. How do I get video files to my iPod?
    A. First of all for DVD's and the like, you'll need a video capture device(a.k.a. a video card that usually comes with a program that allows you to record video from a number of sources).
    Once you've recorded your file which might not be Mpeg-4 or H.264 but will probably be AVI or WMV, what I recommend at this point is the iPod video converter from Xilisoft. this powerful little tool will enable you to open just about any file(WMV,MPEG,AVI...and so on) and convert it to and iPod compatible format. The plus of this program compared to others is not only can you download a trial version, but you get five full minutes of recording without any watermarks(basically print over your new recording that usually says "trial version" or something that can only be removed by purchasing the full version of the product.)
    Third, for editing this is where you can put the 40 bucks you spent on quicktime pro to some use. Now you should be able to open your file in Quicktime without any problems and edit your video for final viewing. (That's if you need to of course. Some video capturing devices don't allow you to do editing.)
    Lastly, if you can't be bothered with all this editing stuff, drop your new video file into your iPod in iTunes, right click the file once iPod is updated, select "get info". One of the tabs should allow you to input the point or time you want the file to start playing.

    They first need to be in iTunes. Find them on the music store under podcasts.
    Once they are there, connect the iPod and go to edit-->preferences in iTunes. Clcik the iPod tab. Then click the videos tab. Make sure update all videos is selected. Then click the podcasts tab under the iPod and make sure that update all podcasts is selected. Click OK.
    If they are not in the right format, then right click an epsidoe and go to convert selection for iPod. You can highlight multiple episodes and convert them at once.

    The format for the files are:

  • How to get video file and iTunes Extra to show as one file in iTunes?

    When I purchase a movie in iTunes with iTunes Extras, after the download is finished in the "Movies" and "Genres" view they appear as one file. You click on the cover, it opens, shows the "Play iTunes Extra" button as well as a small Play arrow button next to the title to play the movie directly. Only in "List" view do they appear as separate files.
    How can I achieve that for my own iTunes extra? I tried giving the .ite the same XID as the movie file but that didn't work, they continue to appear as separate files in iTunes and the little play button when expanding the iTunes Extra doesn't work obviously. Anyone can tell me how this is done?

    Ok, I finally figured it out... there is 2 files that play a critical role in this
    first is manifest.xml
    in this file ensure that the library_item type string references the xid for your video file, and it has to be a proper xid. The iAd Producer manual explains how to create one if it does
    example:
    <library_item type="video" local_id="feature" xid="TEST:uuid:C7AE7CED-3F60-4C08-AA01-E3F9647B95CC" name="Your Movie"/>
    second file and even more critical is iTunesMetadata.plist. There is a couple of strings in there that lace the iTunes Extra to the film and vice versa
    <key>itemId</key>
    <integer>987654321</integer>
    <key>itemName</key>
    <string>Your Movie - iTunes Extras</string>
    The first is a unique 9 digit number that identifies your iTunes Extra file, the second is the name of the file that should follow the convention "Your Movie Title - iTunes Extras"
    <key>playlistId</key>
    <integer>123456789</integer>
    <key>playlistName</key>
    <string>Your Movie</string>
    This is what ties it back to the movie file, we will come back to it later where in the movie MetaData you need to place this 9 digit string
    <key>xid</key>
    <string>TEST:uuid:C7AE7CED-3F60-4C08-AA01-E3F9647B95CC_ITUNES_EXTRAS</string>
    This is the convention in how to properly xid your iTunes Extra, it is your movie's XID with "_ITUNES_EXTRAS" added to the end of it
    <key>Name File</key>
    <string>Your Movie - iTunes Extras.ite</string>
    <key>associated-adam-ids</key>
    <array>
    <integer>123456789</integer>
    The first is self explanatory but the second is again this 9 digit number that you will need to place into the meta data of your movie. It is what will make iTunes lace the two files together
    <key>xid-asset-mapping</key>
    <dict>
    <key>TEST:uuid:C7AE7CED-3F60-4C08-AA01-E3F9647B95CC</key>
    <array>
    <integer>123456789</integer>
    </array>
    <key>TEST:uuid:C7AE7CED-3F60-4C08-AA01-E3F9647B95CC_ITUNES_EXTRAS</key>
    <array>
    <integer>987654321</integer>
    </array>
    </dict>
    This is the last critical piece, it laces the two files tigthly together. Now the 9 digit number counting down from 9 is part of the unique ID of the iTunes Extra, the 9 digit number counting up from 1 needs to be put into the metadata of your movie. The annotation type for this is "contentID".
    That's pretty much it. If you did it right your files will now appear as one file in cover view just like a movie bought in the store.
    The easiest to do this right is to grab the manifest.xml and iTunesMetadata.plist from an iTunes store movie and copy paste and edit it for your purposes, which is what I did.
    Cheers everyone!

  • Getting video files from DVD

    Hi. Can I use Quicktime to capture video files from a DVD? If not, how can I do this? Please keep it basic! Many thanks.

    Can I use Quicktime to capture video files from a DVD?
    QT does not support VOB (muxed MPEG-2 DVD content) files natively. Even with the MPEG-2 component installed, it will not support muxed AC3 audio. The normal approach here is to use an MPEG-based, third party application to extract/convert the VOB content to a more friendly QT compatible compression format. For your purposes, it sounds as if the free HandBrake application may be what you are looking for until you gain more experience in working with these file formats.

  • How to get video files to appear in library?

    I just upgraged to Windows Vista (yuck) and I am having problems getting my .mpeg 4 files to appear in my ITunes Library.
    I tried "Adding File to Library", "Importing", and draging the file to the library and it still will not show up in my library.
    Could anyone help?

    "when will we be able to get them in UK?"
    No-one knows. Steve Jobs has said "sometime in 2007".
    "Is there a way to download from US itunes, i tried to get a new account in the us itunes store but it wont let me?"
    No you can't. At present movies and TV shows are only available in the US iTunes store. There are a variety of reasons for this including copyright and licensing/distribution issues in different countries.
    You cannot purchase anything from an iTunes store outside of the country in which you live and have a billing address as mentioned in the Terms of Sale.
    "You agree not to use or attempt to use the Service from outside of the available territory, and that iTunes may use technologies to verify your compliance."
    The Terms of Use for the iTMS state that you agree that you won't attempt to make purchases from outside the store's country in which you reside. The chance is small that Apple will disable your account, but just be aware that it is possible.
    They certainly won't support your use of the US iTMS from outside the USA if you do have any problems.

  • Quicktime file info missing in Finder column view???

    In the Finder column view my PowerMac G4 running OS X 10.3.9 shows all QuickTime audio and video file info along with the playable thumbnail video or music bar, including duration/running time and (for movies) dimension/aspect ratio in pixels.
    However, on my much newer iBook G4 from 2 years ago running OS X 10.4.10, those two helpful stats are missing. From what I've been told this helpful file date and aspect ratio data is indeed possible with 10.4 Tiger as it is in Panther but I can't see how to show them via either View preferences, QuickTime prefs, Apple's document files or even these message boards. If anyone could please help me I'd really appreciate it, thanks!!!

    Oh, sorry.
    No, I am running Quicktime 7.2 on both computers. I always install the latest updates when Software Update informs me of one and Quicktime doesn't use different versions for Panther & Tiger as far as I know.
    This has been this way for a long time and the only difference at any time in the past has been 10.3.x vs 10.4.x. I sort of accepted it was something not available in Tiger's Finder column view (since I don't remember doing anything specific in Panther to show that extra info) but then after someone pointed out to me that that should be something one can adjust (and after using common sense) I realized Tiger wouldn't disable or take away info provided in the earlier versions, in a sense downgrading something users may rely on.
    I don't think I asked: are you (or anyone reading this) showing the duration and dimensions of Quicktime audio and movie files in Finder column view under Tiger? ...or under Panther? Again, I'm referring to those that can be played directly in the preview in column view. Thanks.

  • Video files - can email them but can't play them...

    So, any advice on how to get video files created on the BB to play in Windows?  I took a video and that I want to email to someone so they can view it, but this 3MG file format doesn't play on any video player that I know of.  How can I get around this?

    Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
    There are a few video conversion programs out there that will do the transcoding (to avi, mpg, etc.). You should research them and choose the one that fits your needs. I found a free one (just by doing a google search) that did a fine job of it for me.

  • Playing Video Files in iTunes U

    There seems to be a problem getting video files to play in iTunes U. In many cases but not all when attempting to launch a video that was successfully uploaded to iTunes U it reports "Loading" for an indefinite period. The file never loads.
    Does anyone else experience this. Does is have to do with the size of the file? Is there a limit to the size of videos that can be played on iTunes U.

    This is something that has already been discussed at length in the following thread:

    Unfortunately, there is no solution to this. Most videos under 30 minutes will play (I say most because it is not 100%).
    What some people in this forum have done is to break the videos longer than 30 minutes in parts. I personally have not done that because I find it to be a waste of time.

  • ITunes library not importing video files.

    Hi All,
    I'm having trouble getting video files into my iTunes library on my Windows Home Server.
    I have the latest version of iTunes running (10.5) on Windows Home Server - all working fine with music. However when I either drag, add through "Add File to Library" or putting the file in the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder.
    The file either just doesn't add at all, or in the case of the "Automatically add to itunes" folder moves into the "Not added" folder.
    I know that the video files I'm adding are okay because:
    - They play in QuickTime fine
      - A fresh install of itunes on another computer adds them fine and they appear in the Movies Library no problem.
    I've tried fully uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes with the same result. If I create a totally new library - also results in the same problem.
    Any ideas? Seems something about iTunes on my server (windows home server) is resulting in it having issues with video files - once again music is no problem at all.
    Many Thanks in advance.
    Stew

    I wish i knew. It seems to be very random in which videos it doesn't add. Is it too much to ask to watch SNL clips on my iPod?

  • "Get info" on video files freezes iTunes for minutes.

    When I right click a video file and select "get info", iTunes always freezes for at least 60 seconds. Then it shows the normal tag info. If I change anything and press ok it freezes again, then it works as it should (with the edited info saved properly). This is making it impossibly time consuming for me to organize my TV-Shows to my new iPod.
    No issue with audio files, but all mp4 video I've tried so far gives me this issue (from movies of 2 hours to YouTube clips of 10 seconds length).
    I have tried reinstalling with the newest version to no effect. I'm clueless, can't find anybody else with the same problem.

    This has always been the case for me. I thought it was normal behavior for iTunes.
