Why wont dictation for mac turn on?

i have macbook pro 13" that i bought brand new at future shop last fall (fall 2011), and i just paid to upgrade my OS X to mountain lion and from the start after the download was done and the computer did it's restart, when i go into my settings to turn on dictation, the on/off menu shows up grey instead of black and wont let me turn it on. I'm starting to get extremely frustrated and didn't know where to run for some help, can any of you guys help? i would greatly apretiate it! Thanks! here is a screenshot of what it shows

I have an iMac and have come across this isue, only to find out that Dictation only allows you to turn on when your account has  adminstartor rights. Should you change back to no adminsrator rights dictation is switched off and you cannont select to turn it on.
I would think the apple guys need to address this issue.

For Arabic/Persian on  a Mac, the best app is Mellel.  But TextEdit, Nisus Writer, or OpenOffice should also work OK.

To my knowledge, Apple does not supply MacBook Pros with MS Word installed.
Pls specify exactly what app and what version you are talking about. If it is really MS Word, then it's possible it wasn't correctly installed. You should re-install MS Office, and then update it, if applicable.

  • Problems using Dragon Dictate for Mac.

I used Dragon Naturally Speaking for years on my PC.  Switched to an IMac.  Dragon for Mac leaves a lot to be desired - training, recognizing, editing.  Any suggestions about how to improve performance or other voice recognition software for Mac users?  I dictate a lot of reports using MS Word.

First of all I have no expertise in installing programs if they are problematic, I can only pass on my experience which relates to trying to purchase and install an Upgrade from MacSpeech Dictate 1.5 to Dragon Dictate 2.5 and the past experience I have had with MacSpeech, the company before Nuance.
The 800-number doesn't get you to Technical Support and I think I was hung up on as well.  The wait for technical support was about 10 minutes.  If you are paying for the phone call by the minute that could be costly.
    Technical Support
    781-565-4960
The tech was patient and his directions were easy to follow.  He logged into my screen using Join Me and if you find that too invasive, it may also be a reason not to continue with Dictate.
Do I understand that you purchased a physical copy of the program on disk? Was it as an Upgrade that Nuance shipped to you?  And it wouldn't let you register the product?  The other criticism I had of MacSpeech and it seems to have carried on to Nuance was that the matter of accounts and registration accounts can be a forest.
The website to register the program is www.macspeech.com/licenses/. (There is another site for registering other Nuance products but it doesn't recognize your account for products that have been registered on the MaSspeech site.).To register the product you will need to set up an account (not an uncommon process) but that account will not be the way you access the download if you purchase the product by digital copy.If you purchase the program as a physical copy, I would suggest you register the product before you start installing but it really shouldn't be necessary because the program will prompt you to register if the install goes well.
I can't recall which identification they asked for when I called technical services - the product code, the order number, or my registration account but I was prepared with all of them.
Once you do register a program, the code can be accessed in the future if you keep track of the account and website on which you registered it.  I see there is also an option which downloads the code to your computer but heaven-knows-where it is stored.  On some other programs the code is stored in the application icon menu. My account on the Macspeech registration website stores the codes for 3 programs I have had since Nuance took over from MacSpeech.
If you have purchased a physical copy and the registration site I listed above won't let you register it, I would call the 800-number which is
    Customer Service
    800-654-1187
What I was trying to do was purchase the Upgrade of Dragon Dictate 2.5 as the result of an email offer because I was a previous customer of MacSpeech Dictate 1.5.  The website only seemed to offer to send me a physical copy with shipping of either $24 or $30 to Canada. When I decided I wouldn't buy the Upgrade because of the shipping cost, I found that I couldn't remove the item from the shopping cart and eventually couldn't even access the shopping cart.  When I called the 800-number to complain they told me there was a problem on the website which wasn't offering the download which was my preference.  They offered to sell me the digital download over the phone which I could then retrieve from the website www.findmyorder.com with the login which asks for the order number and a password (which I think was assigned when I placed the order, but as I said, registration, download access, etc can be a forest and I was very confused by this time.)
At the www.findmyorder.com website, there were two files to download, the program for 2.5 and the data disk. When I tried to install the program and the data, the process started going around in circles asking for things over and over again.I wondered what I was doing wrong (a common reaction) so I tried to install the program on another computer.  The install on the second computer was easy and although I hadn't yet registered the product the program prompted me to register it. It also updated to 2.5.1 (although I only am aware of that in retrospect.)  So I went back to the first computer and tried to install again. The same problem happened.  At one point I exceeded the number of downloads which is 5 because I was trying to get rid of downloads that didn't seem to be working.  I called the 800-number and without too much difficulty, the person reset the downloads.  But the same thing happened, with the program asking for the data disk.  That is when I called Tech Support.
After the tech showed me where to retrieve 2.5.1 from their website (because he said 2.5 was buggy) and I reinstalled the data disk from the www.findmyorder.com website, the install worked well.  BTW I found it hard to understand on the www.findmyorder.com download website which file was which.  I got very confused and ended up not getting the data disk.  The program disk image which is listed second is called Dragon_Dictate_Englishes.2.5.dmg.  The data file listed first is Dragon_English_Data2.5dmg.  You need both files normally but if you are getting the 2.5.1 file, I don't believe you have to have installed 2.5 first.
In retrospect I may have not understood how to install the two files - the program file and the data file but I can't remember exactly what was happening. By that time I was pretty lost.
Back to MacSpeech Dictate 1 or 1.5, I assumed that I would have to have this installed on my computer in order to install the Upgrade of Dragon Dictate 2.5. Remember, I was trying to install 2.5 on a new computer. Although I had done this before I tried to purchase the Upgrade 2.5 (because the computer was new and MacSpeech 1.5 hadn't been installed on it yet), I am not sure it was necessary.
There didn't seem to be any "secret codes" that hadn't to be removed first.  You may be talking about old or corrupted plist files which sometimes interfere with applications.  The tech just told me to drag any 2.5 applications to the trash after we got off the phone, of which by now I had about 5 on the computer.  I have had old versions on a previous computer and they never seemed to interfere with one another. I think I still have iListen 1.0 on a very old computer as well as every fresh version and upgrade.
I hope this reply wasn't too long and didn't add to the confusion.  As I said in the first message, the criticisms are well founded.  Installing MacSpeech iListen and accessing services has been a minefield from the beginning and it isn't improving.  For someone interested in easy-to-use voice recognition I would suggest the Dragon Dictate app for an iPad or iPod Touch.  Works wonderfully but it has very limited features.
My husband, who has physical disabilities but until recently could type better than MacSpeech Dictate was working for him and didn't have a computer that would work with MacSpeech Dictate, has been using Dragon Dictate 2.5.1 on his new computer without a microphone for a couple of days.  He believes there is hope, although with past versions he was frustrated after an hour and quit.  One new thing in Dragon Dictate 2.5 is that editing on the keyboard before you finish the document does not mess up further voice input.  He continues to struggle with voice control (a good exercise for the voice) and his tendency to talk as if there he has a secretary taking shorthand.  You really do have to talk to the computer in a conversational way, speaking in full sentences or full phrases if possible, not in separate words.
From iListen 1.0 I kept saying that voice recognition would work well for everyone.  It has been a long road but I can see on the horizon that it will be available for everyone.  The iPad/iPod app is close.

  • Why does office for Mac keep asking for passwords?

    Very frustrating!!
Not only can I sync Outlook for Mac with my i-phone contacts, Mail & Calandar, but it also keeps asking for email passwords.
this now means the gmail accounts outlook for Mac is connecting to has kicked me out because too manny sign in's have occured.

And another thig, can't connect to the SONOS app, was working perfectly, then just will not connect now!!
Its a brand new Mac pro, working with Mavericks and making lifr differcult.
Shall we go back to a PC?

Please uninstall MacKeeper, this is considered malware for OS X. Google it and you will find many many negative things about it. MacKeeper has it's own uninstall utility to uninstall itself, please use it. OS X unlike MS Windows does not need third party apps to keep itself in good shape, no antivirus apps, no "cleaning" apps etc. The very best thing you can do for your computer is keeping it up-to-date by using Software Update and using a small amount of common sense. While there is a very small amount of malware out there for OS X using that common sense part will help, for example don't visit torrent sites and download illegal software, do not download anything from a pop-up that says, "You must..."
In closing about MacKeeper please read this article by one of the more very knowledgeable people on these forums:

  • Why does Firefox4 for Mac feel less finished than for Windows or even Linux?

On Windows, tabs compress up into the title bar and you can utilize much more screen space for web pages. I wish this had made it into the Mac version. In addition, for mac, it just feels sluggish, laggy, and the browser itself hangs often. My experience with the other platform versions on the same computer is much better. It just feels like the mac version is still beta6.

The Firefox button is only available on Windows and Linux and shows when the Menu bar is hidden.
On Mac the menu bar is maintained by the Mac OS and not by Firefox and the Menu bar is always visible and can't be hidden, so there is no need for such a menu button.

  • Why is Firefox for Mac stalling on many sites recently?

In the last couple of days, my Firefox for Mac (37.0.2) has been stalling on many sites, with the spinning wheel icon just rotating endlessly to show unsuccessful processing. This hanging action occurs on several sites where I'm going into inside pages, a problem I almost never have but now is frequent. Is this some kind of temporary or known issue? I don't want to have to go through Refresh, especially since i noticed someone else commented that it didn't resolve a similar issue. But something is definitely wrong, and is making use of Firefox extremely frustrating if not pointless.

There's a known problem that affects some Acer Liquid phones, but I'm not sure if it affects the Liquid E. We are still investigating it and do not have a solution yet. For details, see: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=606194

  • WHY GOOGLE EARTH FOR MAC DOES NOT INSTALL ON MY MAC?

I downloaded Google Earth for MAC from official site; worked fine for a week. Then it crashed. No use trying to reinstall: it crashes as soon as the black sky with stars desktop appears.
I trashed original download and downloaded a new one (always from official site). Same results.
    Any clue?
    Thanks in advance.

There are 120 items with plist extension.
The nearest things to apps preferences (plist) I found in the finder, were a couple of .globalPreferences.plist different in date and a .globalPreferences.(numbers and letters).plist.
Emptied in the trash and rebooted.
Same items now show today's date, and Mac is apparently OK except for need to reconfig mouse and language....
    Reloaded Google Earth.
    Same early crash at launch.
    ???Any idea???

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the Realtek HD Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp49501-50000/sp49526.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the Realtek audio device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load.  Open your Downloads folder, right click on the Realtek installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.
If you still have no audio, open windows Control Panel, open Administrative Tools and open Services.  Check that the following services are all showing as Status= Started and Start-up Type= Automatic
    Audio Service
    Multimedia Class Scheduler
    Windows Audio
    Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
If you need to make a change to any of the above, just right click the service and select Properties, then in the dropdown box next to 'Start-up type',  select Automatic and click Apply to save the change.  Then click the Start button.

  • Why No Viruses for Macs?

I was recently having a conversation with two of my relatives talking about computer viruses. I was boasting about not having to worry about viruses or spyware since making the switch several years ago. I said it is a true pleasure not having to hear "Dad, we cant get online", "Dad, these pop-up windows a driving us nuts" and my favorite "Dad, why does the anti-virus software say we have a virus but it can"t get rid of it.
I was reformatting that darn PC every other month. Thank you Apple! There's nothing like BEING ABLE TO USE YOU"RE COMPUTER!
Now to my question. When I was asked why Apple computers are not as susceptible to viruses as pc's are. I really didn't know the true answer. I know its how the OS is built but I accually don't know why. One relative said its because there are not that many Apple's out there. Little does he know we Apple users are growing in strength.
Can some one help so the next time I'm in a conversation bragging about Apple computers, I'll know what I'm talking about?
    Thanks,

OS X is set up so that even though it's your computer, you don't have access to the more critical system files. Only the Root User (also called the SuperUser) has full access to everything on the computer. By default, this is turned off, which serves the double purpose of making your mac more secure and keeping you from accidentally hosing your system by trashing something essential.
In order to make changes to those files, you must enable the Root User and log in that way. This is not something that any virus (if there ever was one) could ever do without your noticing, meaning that if a virus ever does get going, it might be able to hose your files in your own account, but probably not your entire computer the way it can do in Windows.

  • Why won't my mac turn back on?

I have been searching for a while now, but nothing is even close to what happened for me. I was using my computer, macbook pro running mavericks. I had a usb cable that was plugged into my computer, and i got the famous "USB using too much power....." error. I figured it was something dealing with the cable, so i unplugged it, and then a few minutes later my computer shut down in the monitor part. I was confused, and tried pressing the power button a few times, and holding it down and everything. I closed the lid, to see if the display on it would "reset" and turn back on, but instead the computer completely shut off. It has been at least 45 min, and the computer will not turn back on. The charger doesn't work, and the computer will not work in any way. Can somebody tell me what has happened? Do I need to take it to apple? Or is there something I can do?

When you press the power button, does your Mac produce the startup chime?
If not, that indicates failure of POST ( Power On Self Test ). This is usually caused by a hardware failure.
Take it to the Apple Store and ask them to check it out.

  • Pse 8 for mac: turn off tabs in workspace?

I am finding the tabs across the top of the workspace get in the way when i am using tools and modifying them etc, mousing over the tab to get to the modify options, activates the tab label pop up, which blocks my use of the modifyers -- hope that makes sense)
I want to turn off the tab option -- no inactive, no active tabs above the workspace square -- just have the photos in the project bin is enough for me. I can't figure out HOW to turn this option off. Please help !
    eljoh

Thank you for quick response. When i open a few photos in PSE 8,  thumbnails go in the project bin along the bottom (that's good), the last photo opened opens in the in the work window (that's good), and at the top, above the workspace that holds the photo to work on (active photo), and below the options for adjusting tools and then the menus about that, are TABS with the file names of each photo opened, along the top of the work area. I want to shut off that option (i know i turned it on to try it, now want it off) as each time i ajust a brush size or opacity etc my mouse goes over a TAB which then leads to the file name "popping up" and blocking my access to the ajustments i want.
does that help you understand? i hope so !!
