Why would a failed drive scare the rest of the drives off the SCSI bus?
I have a VMWare 4-based system running Solaris 10 5/09 s10x_u7wos_08 as a VM configured with PCI passthrough to give it control over an LSI 22320SE SCSI HBA. This is connected to an external Areca SATA to SCSI RAID array in JBOD mode. The drives are 750 GB Seagate Barracudas, ST3750640AS and are part of a raidz2 in ZFS.
The Areca controller reports a single drive has failed and Solaris notices it simultaneously. So far, so good.
But immediately after that, the other drives on this array start running frightened as if whatever the first drive got is contagious. Two others even go offline temporarily. What could cause this to happen?
Of course, the pool goes offline. However, on reboot, the pool comes up with just that first failed drive in a "cannot open" state.

I have noticed that the system can "hold onto" a drive name when there's a disconnect from the external volume.
Try this. Eject your external drive. Go into Terminal, and type
Cd /Volumes
Do you see a phantom "Warehouse" volume still there? If so, navigate into it, make sure there are no files you might want to keep (copy them elsewhere if so), then navigate out and use
sudo rm -rf /Volumes/Warehouse
See if that fixes it.

Weird: why would a network drive with the name "time-capsule-de" and an icon of an old-fashioned PC monitor suddenly appear on my home network?
It happened shortly after I'd set up a new Time Capsule with our iMac and had transferred the configuration for it over from my old Time Capsule.
I'd just taken the old Time Capsule into another room and powered it up with my MacBook to confirm that Airport Utility's wiping of its settings hadn't affected the old Time Machine backups still stored in it.
I was in the process of tinkering to see how I could use the old Time Capsule, when Airport Utility offered to "extend" my home network, so I tried that setting, and then got a warning that the old Time Capsule and its wifi networks were not yet secure or private. While I was working to fix that, I noticed that in the Finder sidebar and in my Network settings, this mysterious "time-capsule-de" (with an odd old-fashioned PC monitor for an icon) had appeared. I tried to click on it, but could not access it. I also could not eject it. I shut down my old Time Capsule and my MacBook. When I turned the laptop back on, "time-capsule-de" was gone.
What do you all make of that? Should I worry about the security of my home network? I live in an apartment development, so there are more than a dozen stray wifi signals pouring in from other units.

It appears in Finder .. that is to be expected.. it is after all a network drive.. and it has PC symbol more than likely because you are using Mavericks which defaults to SMB network.. ie the computer thinks it is a windows computer.
There is nothing bad or sinister going on.. but you certainly need to ensure your own wireless network is secure..
That is otherwise all fine.
If the TC shows up again, check that it is also in the airport utility and check its MAC address with the label on the bottom.. It will show in the Utility .. then you can compare and check you are reading the right thing. -
Why would I want to use the mail icon on my dock?

As I'm endeavoring to further my knowledge on the Mac, I'm curious as to know if I'm losing out on not using the mail icon on my dock.
Any particular reason I should use it? I currently use yahoo and gmail. I think they're considered IMAP technology and I can access it anywhere any anyhow as long as I have access to the web. I also use my iphone to access it.
So... why would I want to use the mail icon on my dock? Are the reasons going to be for the characteristics for POP? I.E, can off load mail to my Mac and read later without having live access to web?
BTW, if I did want to setup mail on the dock. What is the incoming and outgoing mail server for yahoo? Sorry, could locate that info. in yahoo mail.

You should use whatever is more convenient.
Mail is a standalone application designed for email access, so it is more responsive and has more features. Web-based apps are getting much better, but you can still tell you are in a web browser. You can work off-line, even if you use an IMAP service (such as MobileMe). You can save emails locally, even if most emails are on the server, and if it's POP, all your messages are downloaded to a local database (that may or may not be an advantage to you).
Mail is integrated with Address Book and iCal (and other Apple apps). You can use Time Machine to recover individual deleted emails, just like you would recover deleted files or folders (using the +flying through space+ interface). -
Why would my hard drive fail twice in 5 months?
Hi there and thanks in advance.
I have a 1.5GHz 15" powerbook running 10.4.8 that has been pretty reliable in the (almost) 3 years I've had it. But then this fall I was getting kernel panics, freeze-ups, etc. and the Apple Store replaced the hard drive. All was good for about 5 months and then I got kernel panics again. They said it was 3rd party RAM. Removed it, but there's still a problem (when running the Disk Utility I get this msg: "First Aid failed" and "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit," and they now want to replace the hard drive again.
Is there anything that could be making my hard drive(s) die? I would like them to deal with any problems before my AppleCare expires in May. What does the logic board do? (a friend suggested having them look at it...) I'm not a computer guy, so know little about how this equipment works.
One last note. The only other thing I noticed during the 5 good months: every once in a while I would have something weird happen, for example when using the Finder I would be unable to rename folders until I restarted the machine. Or, occasionally using Mail, options I normally set in preferences would disappear, and I would have a different looking set of "New Message" options, as if I had changed my preferences, though I hadn't.
These seemed like little things and I never dealt with them because things seemed to go back to normal, but perhaps they were symptomatic of something larger? Any advice appreciated. I'm taking my computer in tomorrow or Sunday to have them replace the hard drive, and just want to relay as much info to their techs so they check out everything. Thanks again!

So I would ask Apple to check the logic board for correct function and if necessary, persist upon a replace before your warranty expires (logic board replacements are expensive).
What does the SMART status say about the harddrive ? You can download a nice tool from http://homepage.mac.com/julianmayer/smartreporter/index.html (alternatively the disk utility can also tell the current SMART status. -
Why Would Upper Field Dominance Change The Quality Of My SD So Much?
I did a shoot in SD and edited it as such of course. The thing is when I was done, all of my slow motion looked echoy (a plague of mine if you're not familiar with my posts) and generally looked a bit lower quality then even SD usually gives. So I freaked out (finally) and found a guy on line that suggested changing the field dominance to Upper and to make sure that I have my Video Processing set to "Fastest Linear". Now this was a guy that has had this posted for a couple of years, so it wasn't like he actually told me this directly.
Well, it worked. The video looks good, slow motion is nice and smooth. Just for fun, plus the fact that I don't have a clue what I'm doing, I decided to see what it would look like leaving the processing the to Fastest and change the dominance to lower, and behold, the cruddy video plague of mine returned. It seems like everywhere else I look, people say not to do this, but it worked. Why? I do know what the dominance of upper and lower are, I'm just not smart enough to know why it worked and I want to learn this badly. For example, would I do this same dominance for HD?

CraytonI filmed it in SD on my Sony HDV-AU1 camera. What is killing me is if I choose upper then the footage looks fine, but then what I have done is add some jpeg images that I created in photoshop on a PC. they are simple images of text that say "Round 1" or "Round 2" in between the fights. I have them spin into view using one of the transitions in FCP, but when I get it to dvd, they look horrible, echoy, just like the footage looked like before I changed it to upper field. So as it looks now, I can't have both look good i guess. This doesn't make sense to me!! It is incredibly frustrating especially since I'm out of money and almost out of time on this project (it has to be done by next week). I keep re-doing the project, re-building it, re-setting it in one type of sequence after another and it's not looking good at all. what am I doing wrong?

Why would a movie that's been sold in the iTunes Store disappear from the store? It was a $14.99 movie too.

I suppose a mistake could have been made, but, other than that, it surely must be that a deal that would have kept it in the iTunes Store, somehow, wasn't done. That I haven't a clue about why is what's so frustrating.
I find it interesting, too, that there are movies not in iTunes which I would think would surely be there. For example, 25 movies are listed for Tom Cruise but "War of the Worlds" (the only one I want) isn't there. Another missing movie I like to see from time to time is "The Sound of Music" with Julie Andrews (again, the only Julie Andrews movie I want). -
Why would hyperlinks fail to work half-way through generated PDF?
I'm trying to create a PDF of a MS Word file using the Adobe PDF > Convert to Adobe PDF function. In the generated PDF, half-way through the file the hyperlinks stop working although they display correctly. In the source Word file, the links work fine. The Word file is heavily cross referenced and is about 14 MB. It was originally a 26MB file, but I reduced the filesize by converting the embedded graphics from embedded Visio objects to .wmf images.
My question - what would make the hyperlinks fail? Is it a system processing issue? The rest of the PDF seems fine. Note that the final PDF also contains bookmarks. All other PDFs I generate work correctly.

Any ideas would be appreciated.Just in case, I would suggest updating your Acrobat. You have to install the updates in order, but AA7 is currently at 7.1.2. The updates are available at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Windows. Version 7.0.1 is a very early version. The latter versions (7.1.x) were primarily security updates. The 7.0.x updates were fixing a lot of the bugs.

I don't use Aperture. The upgrade to the latest and greatest iPhoto is a reasonable cost, but I have heard complaints about it all.

iPhoto is not good with Referenced libraries, and so will hardly scale to the volume of images a pro is likely to have. It also has comsumer level tools for processing.
As for complaints: do you mean at the App store etc? If so those reviews aren't worth the paper they're not written on.
The problems with them are manifold: for a start, happy people are less likely to review, unhappy happy are much more inclined to. That's why we don't have thousands and thousands of posts on this forum from all the people who have no problems saying "look I have no problems". Unhappy people get cross and are more likely to express that anger in negative reviews.
Then what about the reviewer? What is his or her knowledge, experience and skill level? No doubt they are having problems, and real ones, but how do you know if their issues are problems with the app, their own inexperience, third party conflicts and so on. I've seen people on here claim the fact that iPhoto won't edit video is a bug. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of posts from folks on here who are certain they've found a bug, only for their glitch to be resolved. No review is worth anything unless you know something of the reviewer, his or her knowledge and experience.
So frankly, I never bother with those reviews on any such stores, not just iPhoto on the Mac App Store. -
Why does the side bar not automatically show up when you first download apple iTunes? Really really bad design. It took 20 min to fine the setting that enable the side bar. ***? I could not access my iPod for 20 freakin min! Just show the **** side bar always! Maybe apple is too big and is starting to lose common sense.

CR 8.5 - Why would inserting a group change the value of a detail field?
I have a report that has a field in the detail called Margin. The Margin field is calculated in my SQL query. I've checked and the data in SQL is still correct...
I used the Wizard to setup my basic report.
I just added the fields and that's about it. I didn't create the group in the wizard.
Everything looked good so I added a group.
My margin field looked good. (the numbers were in the range they should be)
I spent a good part of an hour formatting and testing.
Hadn't been watching the Margin field, and now I noticed that the numbers are way off.
They run in the range of positive numbers 5% to 60% (for example), now all of a sudden they are Negative and well into the 100s.
I have no Formulas at this time. I do have some I need to create, but haven't yet.
I have a group created. The group isn't on the Margin field....
I've refreshed the data and the numbers are still whacked out...
I just tried taking the Group out and the Margin numbers go back to normal.
What about the group is screwing up my Margin number?
What am I doing wrong???

Not 100% sure how to answer this, but I do know that I'm grouping on the field "PartGroup" in my Stored procedure.

I would say no.
I tried deleting the field Margin from the Detail section and in the Field Explorer there is no green check mark showing. (it's my understanding that if there's a green check mark it's being used somewhere)

I had also Inserted Subtotals that look like this:

I've since removed them and the numbers are still screwy
It seems like if I go far enough back (undo my work) the Margin field corrects itself.
Then I can redo the report back to almost finished and it screws up again....
I'd love to know what I'm doing to cause this.

Why would my tabs be missing the favicon/mini-icon?
Since yesterday for some reason the tiny icon has disappeared from my tabs. That is the little icon that usually sits to the left of a tab's 'title'. I'm not sure why it's done this, I recently installed a script on Greasemonkey and another add-on but I didn't actually have any problems and the icon was still around even after using both add-ons.
The only thing I can think of is that late last night I happened to run a scan using iobit's Advanced System Care and that was when the icons disappeared. BUT! I've since restarted firefox many times since then and the icons are still missing with only two exceptions: 1) The Firefox logo that appears when you're on any mozilla page; 2) an icon that belongs on a fanfiction site; no other websites appear to be showing their icon and instead simply have as a square border of a dashed line. (I've included a <b>screenshot</b> below!)

Why would an IndexArrayOutOfBounds occur when the code hasn't been altered?
I'm asking this because I've been testing an algorithm I made, and now I'm getting ArrayIndexOutofBounds exception.

Why would Lacie external drive stop working?
My iMac has a Lacie used for TMachine but now it doesnt appear on desktop, Disk Utility and About This Area. The external power unit and USB cable look good too.
Any idea of the cause (or guess)
thxIf you get a SATA USB drive cable kit adapter, you can get the HDD out of the enclosure
& attach the wires (plugs) into the drive to see if you can recover files directly; these kits
usually have their own power supply if to be used with 3.5" HDDs; while there are kits
for 2.5" HDDs that presume port-power is adequate.
Most computer stores have something along this line; be sure to ask of their return policy just in case it doesn't work, or is the wrong kit.
Hopefully you can get the goods outta it.

I just built a new website for a client and hosted it with Go Daddy for them. They are LIVID because the site Locks up their droid, but no other site seems to do that. . .?
It makes no sense to me, it's a 350mb site, heavy in jpg and photos. Any suggestions?
