Wierd mouse behavior since installing Tiger

Since installing Tiger, the mouse I have (the standard one-button Apple mouse that came with my G5) has been acting up. Often the pointer will suddenly float away from wherever I'm pointing it (usually it will float to a corner). Is it a hardware problem or a software problem? I've only noticed it since installing Tiger. I thought it might be related to the USB Overdrive program, but I uninstalled that and the problem persists. Any advice?

Regardless of what Intego claims, test to see if it works better without their software. If it does, then I'd submit a support request to them. Firewall software by the way has one serious weakness, and that unlike firewall hardware, the software can more easily be manipulated than those settings on a hardware firewall.

Just to note, there are currently no Mac OS X viruses in the wild. You are primarily preventing yourself from passing on viruses to PC users. Of course you can also do this by proactively only accepting e-mail attachments from people you know have no risk of having put viruses on their attachments in the first place.

  • Why doesn't my HP 5650 printer work as well since installing Tiger?

I have used an inkjet HP 5650 since January 2004 and it has always worked well. A month ago, I purchased and installed Tiger. I noted that the printer had slowed down significantly, that the Tool Box Utility was no longer available, and that I could no longer check the remaining ink level. Went to the HP web site and installed their newest(?) driver for OS Version X Tiger. It has not helped, in fact it has regressed in that the only printer available now is HP 5600. I have appealed to newsgroups, I have appealed to HP. They sent me a single-spaced, three-pages long instructions on how to fix the problem. To print the pages of instructions alone took over four minutes. Their latest driver is three years old. I am not an expert, nor am I a novice, but these instructions intimidate me. What is wrong? How do I get back to the previous performance achieved when I had Jaguar?

monie3, when you installed Tiger, did you install the Gimp Print driver? If you did could it interfere with the HP driver?

  • Freezing, etc. since installing Tiger

Ever since I installed Tiger, my computer freezes up for a few seconds. Like i go to open something on the dock and it takes a few seconds to open. What i mean is the icon bounces up and then freezes there. Another example is minimizing windows. It will start to minimize and freeze for a few seconds. I also have trouble with clicking on the red x to close out a window. I can click on it and nothing happens until i reposition the window. Just weird little things like that have been happening and I can't figure out why. I've already repaired permissions numerous times and that has no affect. Any suggestions?
    Teri

I'm guessing you may have just had a bad install. It can happen from time to time. If it's not a problem I would suggest reinstalling. Because you say you have your files backed up, this shouldn't be too great an inconvenience. What I'd like you to do, however, is a re-prep of the hard drive as follows:
1 Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After the formatting is completed quit DU to return to the installer, then proceed to re-install Tiger.
After installation check that everything is working properly before restoring anything from your backups. Be careful not restore any utilities that may be incompatible with Tiger such as third-party preference panes, contextual menu items, startupitems, login items, menubar items, etc. If you aren't sure if something is compatible check the software developer's site or versiontracker.com for any Tiger upgrades. Also be sure to upgrade any third-party applications such as Office X, any Adobe products, etc. If you have any third-party periipherals be sure they are compatible by checking them one by one. If any use proprietary drivers be sure the drivers are updated.
I don't know how much RAM you have installed in your computer, but if you don't have more than 256 MBs you will need to add more. Also be sure to maintain at least 6-8 GBs of free space on your hard drive.

  • No video since installing tiger

Since upgrading to Tiger, FCP shows no video from my camera. FCP can control my camera (play, rev etc) but i see no picture 'Preview unavailable.' When i click capture now, it tells me 'attempt top capture video without a devide selected. please select a video device in your capture presets and try again.' when i go to capture presets, there's a warning that says 'video device DV is missing.'
I've tried throwing away my prefs, old install receipts, i reinstalled, made sure i had the latest version of quicktime. I took off all external hard drives. Still...no video. Someone please help, I'm about to smash this thing.
specs: apple g5 dual, tiger os 10.4.3, FCP HD 4.5, QT 7.0.3, and a Panasonic camera attached to the g5 through firewire.

Douglas, try this: Turn off all external hard drives. Take all drives off line except one. Plug (firewire) your camera into the drive still on line. Turn the drive on, turn the camera on. Hit Command-8 (capture) Select Non-controllable Device. Roll camera. You should get video in the preview window. If not, repeat the sequence above starting the camera after you have told FCP to capture.
Usually you will find you also have camera control once you have daisy chained your components this way, and you can change your capture settings to firewire device.
    Good luck.

  • Since installing Tiger my images files are missing .jpg and won't open.

Upgraded to Tiger a month or so ago. Now when I open some images files there are two extra items in the folder. One marked FINDER.DAT and another folder marked RESOURCE.FRK in upper case. My images will not open because the .jpg has been removed. I can retype the .jpg and they will open, but we are talking over 4000 images here. What happened? • Fuzzy monitor since installing Tiger

    hello
I recently installed 10.4 on my computer. I've got an NEC Accusync 90 17" CRT monitor attached to it. My previous OS was 9.2, and the monitor worked perfectly. Now the monitor is so fuzzy I feel as though my brain is going to melt. How do I configure the monitor? I have tried System Preferences, Display Resolution and Colors, I've tried the Display Calibration Assistant, but those attempts don't affect the clarity of the screen.
How can I fix this issue, and why wasn't there a problem in OS9 but now in OS 10.4?
    thank you

how do I figure out what the optimum resolution is?
From your monitor's manual, find out the table that lists the compatible/optimum resolution and refresh rates. Then go to System Preferences-->Displays-->Display and set it accordingly.
Make sure that (System Preferences-->Displays-->Color), Show profiles for this monitor only is checked.
You can also make sure that System Preferences-->Appearance-->Font Smoothing Style is set to Automatic-best for main display.
Do you suggest I do this?
    Resetting the NVRAM wouldn't hurt.
Your monitor may be dying. I have had a monitor get
very fuzzy for a while and then just die.
This might be the case too. CRT monitors tend to fade-away after 4 years and eventually die (depending on usage of course)

I have an IBM Think Pad and since installing the latest version of Firfox, the trackpoint scrolling on my mouse no longer works

Try to modify the pref ui.trackpoint_hack.enabled on the about:config page from the default value -1 to 0 or 1 to see if that makes the scroll pad work.<br />
Close and restart Firefox after changing the pref.
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default via the right-click context menu if they are user set
*Preferences can be changed via the right-click context menu: Modify (String or Integer) or Toggle (Boolean)

  • Myriad of problems since attempting to install Tiger

Some time ago I tried to install Tiger and got the messge the disc was damaged. I went back to Apple and they tried to install their copy and in the process my iPhoto got all fouled up. They recovered the library (somewhat) and we decided not to install Tiger until I backed up my machine. Some time later I brought my external drive in and we backed up the user and then tried to rebuild the iPhoto library. By the time I had to leave, my iPhoto was still showing white thumbnails on 30% of my library. I tried to rebuild it yesterday and like the previous time, iPhoto quite unexpectedly. See my posted question at iPhoto4 - Tried rebuilding iPhoto library twice, both time iPhoto "unexpectedly quit"
Just got back from the Apple store and their solution to the iPhoto issue agreed with Brie Fly's post of:
Move the two recent rebuild attempts from Pictures to the trash. Temporarily move your original iPhoto Library folder to the desktop. Start iPhoto and choose "Create New..." from the dialog. Quit iPhoto.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder from the desktop, and drop it inside the newly created iPhoto Library folder in Pictures (put it inside; don't replace).
Now start iPhoto again while holding the shift+option keys to try another rebuild.
The Genius folks at the Apple store suggested that I also Archive and Install to see if I have a corrupt user file. I decided to back up my user first and this is where I got....
Dragged user to desktop icon of external drive, while it was "preparing to copy" it stopped with the message:
"One or more items have special permissions and cannot be copied. Do you want to skip them?" I'd expect one of the choices to be "Yes" but curiously the two choices were "Stop" and "Replace". (symantics!) I chose "Replace" and almost immediately I got the message:
"The operation cannot be completed because the item "Installer" is locked." I then click the only button offered, "Ok was the only choice to click upon doing so the operation is ceased.
I didn't know the Installer could be locked, how it became that way nor how to unlock it!

Wow, has this stumped the experts?

  • It's all gone wrong since installing Leopard

Hi, I've got a few problems that have started since I installed Leopard, so after trawling through the forums and doing little bits, I thought I'd consolidate them all into one post and hopefully get all the answers together in one thread! I hope someone can help with suggestions, thanks in advance for your time. Here goes:
    1) Crashes: I have never had a crash in over 3yrs until this week when I installed Leopard and now I've had about 7 crashes in 4 days. I think they are kernel related but may also be related to:
    2) Free space: since installing Leopard my hard drive free space has gone from 30GB down to 7GB. Have emptied my trash, performed some routine maintenance to remove logs etc, and run Monolingual to remove localization files, so I'm now up to 16GB free, but there should be more.
All my music and photos are on an external drive, except for a 10GB backup music file which I had on Tiger...
    3) Having run OmniDiskSweeper, I am a bit confused about where Leopard puts music. In users/username/music/itunes, there is an 11GB internal library (where my backup folder is) and 8GB of artist folders. Do I need these if all my music should be on my other drive (and downloads are all backed up in the internal library)? They don't show up in Finder.
The same backup music file is also showing in private/var/root/music, so is it duplicated?
3a) I have also read that you can delete some private/var files that OmniDiskSweeper finds but am a bit wary about deleting things I don't understand. Can somebody clarify what is safe to get rid of and what I need to keep?
    4) When I looked at Console I have a recurring log from com.applesystemstarter 18 that says "The process has forked and you cannot use this Corefoundation functionality safely. You MUST exec ( )." What is this? Is it causing the crashes?
    5) I don't think it is related to any of this but at the same time as installing Leopard I upgraded my memory from 512MB to 2GB. Have run Rember and it says everything is ok with the new memory, but thought I'd mention it in case it helps!
I have run disk utility and it says the disk is ok, but everything is very sluggish, slow and lots of spinning beachball action. I guess it's down to the hard drive space and it's certainly improved since freeing up the extra 10GB. But my Mac is acting more like a PC right now and I don't like it. PLEASE HELP!!!
Thanks again, sorry for the long post.

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Sloppy Mouse Behavior in this OS

I've never been impressed with the mouse accuracy on Apple systems to begin with but it's gotten worse. I use a 40", Samsung, LED, LCD TV as a monitor for my Intel Mac Pro via an HDMI cable. This is a very expensive monitor. Ever since the past couple of OS updates to Leopard, I noticed the mouse behavior getting very erratic. Specifically I am referring to clicking to close tabs in the browser and nothing happens. Or in mail, I attempt to say highlight an email and it opens instead. Sometimes even multiple copies open. Highlighting and changing a file name is nearly impossible. The same goes for trying to drag or move files around in Finder.
This weekend I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard with no improvement.
I've tried changing mice. I've got a Logitech VX Nano laser mouse. A logitech optical trackball. And a Microsoft laser mouse. All behave the same. They have the exact same problems with or without their driver packages installed.
What's up with this? Does Apple test anything? After the experiences I've had with my Airport Extreme Router and the firmware upgrades, the constant file permission errors after patches, I really have to wonder.

Sorry, but I get the impression that you have no clue what you're talking about when it comes to drivers and their submission to Microsoft:
    http://dictionary.zdnet.com/definition/whql.html
Just for the record, I don't have any third party mouse drivers loaded in the OS. While I would agree that in order to get specialized functions on a mouse to work you may need a driver, but I would disagree that in order just get proper operation of the pointer and right and left click buttons that you should need a specialized driver just because it's from a different manufacturer, especially on wired devices.
This operating system is displaying the "i's" as "l's" in my RSS feeds on Safari. I guess that's someone else's problem too?

  • Install Tiger on G3 B&W

    Hi
besides my G5 I have an older G3 B&W 350MHz 256Mb RAM running on Classic 9.1. I tried to install Tiger as I understand this computer meets the minimum requirements to install this software. However I tried to install from the Tiger installation Disc that came with my G5 but the installation is refused with a "This computer is not supported" message. Somewhere I read I needed to check whether my firmware was updated. I did and it was indeed. Can't this install disc work on other computers other than G5? Do I need another version of Tiger? Thanks in advance for any help.

I got the Tiger retail disk but it won't install. I get the following message:
"Startup Disk was unable to select the install CD as the startup disk (-2)" I looked up this problem and:
    1) started up from the install disk by pressing C. It does start up, it does install, but then it does not boot from the HD. I get a black screen with a few lines of text which freezes at the following line: "Warning ATA drive claims FLUSH CACHE feature support but does not claim LBA feature support/ Still waiting for root device"
    2) I disconnected every peripheral from the machine except monitor, mouse and keyboard. The machine had an Adaptec 2930 card installed - I pulled it out. Since I had changed the original optical drive to a DVD drive I checked whether the device ID was 0. I wasn't so I changed that to 0. I reinstalled but still got the same message.
    Any ideas?

  • Re-installed Tiger..not system preferenced won't launch

So I had installed the new OS on my old G5 tower a few months back, and have had a number of problems with it. I assume most of these problems are stemmed from the fact that the new OS is designed for the new intel chips, which i just missed the boat on with my tower. Either way, I decided to re-install tiger from the discs that were included with this computer when i bought it.
The install went fine, but when i launched into tiger for the first time, I found that I could not get the system preferences to load. Whenever I click the system pref option from the apple pulldown menu, an icon STARTS to pop up in the dock, then goes away and nothing loads. I have tried to repair permissions based on the advice of another user here, but it didnt help. Does anyone else have any suggestions? And If i need to completely re-format and re-start, can someone help me walk though it?
    Thansk.

    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11.
In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant.
If you are updating to Safari 3.0.4 (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.

  • HELP!  Stuck in a Loop after Erase & Install Tiger 10.4

    Here's what happened:
My old G4 PPC PowerMac suddenly started running everything (including on startup) very slowly. A weird sound was coming from the HD? (not sure) but it sounded like it was constantly doing something. The sound was a regular: chik, chik, chik...glikglik.
*Did a Verify for Disk Permissions & HD Volume, found a load of problems & tried to fix from my Tiger CD/DVD Install disc on startup.
*No luck...as there was an "Incorrect number of thread records" & Volume could not be fixed.
    *Backedup everything onto external HD
*Did Erase & Install Tiger 10.4
*Everything seemed fine (the weird sound stopped) so I started installing all standard Updates- Java etc & my iTunes music.
*Weird sound returned but not as constant, so I did a Verify & fixed Disk Permissions and HD Volume from my Tiger CD/DVD Install disc on startup again. Successful this time. Volume was fine.
*Used Onyx to do verify Volume. Volume fine.
    [Bare with me;)]
*Started to import all my backup files. The weird sound returned with a vengence! Argh! Everything slowed down even worst than before.
*Decided to Erase & Install again. Done, but now I'm stuck in the Welcome to Tiger loop: Welcome Tiger animation which crashes halfway through, then takes me to settings for language, location, Mac sign in...loops back again to Welcome.
I am a complete dummy when it comes to computers, so have tried to follow instructions/advice to the T. I don't have a clue what is going on. Please anyone out there, help!

Best to ask about hardware questions on the appropriate hardware forum. That said...
Unless for some reason you want to keep hold of an old computer for specific features not present in a newer computer it is almost always cheaper to buy a newer used computer rather than upgrade hardware in an old one. Since you're talking upgrading multiple features that is almost certain.
A consideration: Snow Leopard is now out. This is pushing pre-Intel Macs towards into obsolescence. I already see a number of software vendors who say they do not support Tiger any more. Some may soon start saying they no longer support pre-Intel Macs. Although I find my G4 and Tiger to still be perfectly usable, if my G4 were to die today and I was interested in a used computer I might seriously look at a used Intel Mac. There's a bit of a jump at the PPC + Tiger to Intel + Leopard-plus boundary and it will become more noticeable soon. If you can afford it I would suggest not being more than one big generation behind in terms of software and hardware, and in this case maybe not even one major generation in terms of hardware. To summarize, if it were me I would be looking for a used early Intel Mac running Leopard currently so I could ensure there still being support for the next few years.

  • After Clean Instal Tiger, upgrading to 10.4.7. many errors appeared

I wiped my boot drive, installed tiger, upgraded combo 10.4.7. Created anount account user. Things were spiffy for a moment until I mounted my firewire drives and some dmg file. BLAM! CRASH! MAYDAY MAYDAY! RUN FOR COVER into the apple forum! I've search forums for several problems and was unable to find solution but did on my own.
    Errors:
Media ejectables: DMG, firewire drives, cd, dvd would not appear (but would on other users) I tried permission fix, disconnecting, whatever.
Internal audio wasn't working. Volume control was dissabled, and volume icon dissappeared from menubar after clicking it.
Worse of all: My icons on my sidebar were missing, desktop icons were randomly missing. I did comand J on finder and select show icon and show preview. That worked until log out, log in. Icons were switched around to the wrong ones, I thought I was on mars.
What else, well didn't get around much since I tried to deal with one problem at a time - it became overwhelming.
Before erasing the drive and reinstalling for another try, I decided to trash all my contents in my prefs folder in my home/personal directory (didn't empty trash). Logged out and back in. I'm back in business!
Those of you may want to try that and may have to re-adjust all your settings, serials, etc. Or you could drag some prefs back to folder to to find culprit or just the ones you really need. When happy with everything... Take out the garbage!
Hope it works for you as well.

It's explained as is. Delete some preference files.
