Myriad of issues since trying to install Tiger with a defective disc.
Some time ago I tried to install Tiger and got the messge the disc was damaged. I went back to Apple and they tried to install their copy and in the process my iPhoto got all fouled up. They recovered the library (somewhat) and we decided not to install Tiger until I backed up my machine. Some time later I brought my external drive in and we backed up the user and then tried to rebuild the iPhoto library. By the time I had to leave, my iPhoto was still showing white thumbnails on 30% of my library. I tried to rebuild it yesterday and like the previous time, iPhoto quite unexpectedly. Just got back from the Apple store and their solution to the iPhoto issue agreed with Brie Fly's post of:
Move the two recent rebuild attempts from Pictures to the trash. Temporarily move your original iPhoto Library folder to the desktop. Start iPhoto and choose "Create New..." from the dialog. Quit iPhoto.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder from the desktop, and drop it inside the newly created iPhoto Library folder in Pictures (put it inside; don't replace).
Now start iPhoto again while holding the shift+option keys to try another rebuild.
The Genius folks at the Apple store suggested that I also Archive and Install to see if I have a corrupt user file. I decided to back up my user first and this is where I got....
Dragged user to desktop icon of external drive, while it was "preparing to copy" it stopped with the message:
"One or more items have special permissions and cannot be copied. Do you want to skip them?" I'd expect one of the choices to be "Yes" but curiously the two choices were "Stop" and "Replace". (symantics!) I chose "Replace" and almost immediately I got the message:
"The operation cannot be completed because the item "Installer" is locked." I then click the only button offered, "Ok was the only choice to click upon doing so the operation is ceased.
I didn't know the Installer could be locked, how it became that way nor how to unlock it!
Wow, has this stumped the experts?

9.1. is an update and can only be installed if you have purchased iLife '11 on DVD or iPhoto '11 from the App store - and iPhoto '11 will not run on OS 10.5.8 - or 10.5.1

My hard drive fried and had to be replaced. I'm trying to install CS4 from my original discs but keep getting this error message - "One or more of the required components of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Standard failed to install correctly". A customer service rep gave me a link to download off the Adobe site, but when I try to open the file to run it, I get this error message - "A problem occurred extracting the archive".
Can anyone help?Yep. Nothing happens at all. Windows tries to execute the uninstaller, but I don't get any other screen and all activity stops for the MSI. I monitored it in Process Monitor and the MSI executable appears, but is quickly ended, like it couldn't find anything or something.
It's as if windows has a blank entry in Programs and Features, because it used to show the size of the Adobe application in the "Size" column. Now it's just blank. Link to screenshot below:

Note the install date. That's when I was able to successfully reinstall it. Now I can't even do that. I should also mention I tried Revo Uninstaller. It deleted one small registry key, but nothing changed.
By the way, is the CS cleaner supposed to ask for a disc in the drive when you run it? It refused to run unless I had one in it, so I used my install dvd. -

I tried re-installing firefox with no luck. no matter what i get this:

How can i fix this?Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Running 10.4.11 and trying to restore OS9 as well as iLife etc. I tried to install iLifer from the original disc and the computer doesn't open the install program with the .mpkg file extension. Can you help?

Trying to Install Tiger iMovie HD on Snow Leopard But Can't
I really like iMovie HD better than iMovie 09. I used to have a 2006 MBP with Tiger and iMovie HD, but the laptop went sour and Apple replaced it with a mid-2009 MBP with Leopard. I really don't like this iMovie and it seems to render video differently. I still have my 2006 MBP install discs and I tried to install iMovie HD on my 2009 MBP but it won't let me because of the new hardware.
Is there any way that I can get my old iMovie HD on my new MBP. I mean I have the original install discs and yet still can't run them on my new Mac. Not cool.I tried extracting from the install discs and I couldn't find iMovie. Disc 1 had the basic OS apps like iCal, Mail, etc. Disc 2 doesn't show anything. All Disc 2 has is a file that says use Disc 1 to install the OS. Am I maybe missing a disc?
By the way, how safe are those online download sites? I'm worried about downloading the program and getting some harmful software. Especially since I don't have virus protection on my Mac. -
Just got a G4 desktop that is running 10.2, so i bought 10.4(retail dvd) to update. I have had to go back and reinstall OSX and OS10.2 because trying to install 10.4 is not working and is making my computer lock up. I have also tryed to erase the hard drive and install 10.4 by itself and the computer will not recognize that there is a disc in the machine. (Even when you hold C when you reboot). I have actually made it about 25% through installation before it cancels the install.
Also, when in 10.2, the dvd drive ejects the 10.4 disc, when trying to install it. Has anyone heard of a G4 that has trouble reading DVD's, Sorry this is so lengthy.

Thing was, I was trying to install python-prettytable from AUR which has python-distribute as makedepends via the wrapper 'packer' and this was failing.
Now tried the manual install for python-prettytable via makepkg -s and it was able to resolve the dependency correctly.
So could be an issue with packer in resolving such dependencies.
