Will I lose quality when compressing?

I usually import at AAC 256kps as that setting is the best compromise between quality and filesize for me. Obviously there is a little loss of quality but hardly anything noticeable.
Now I need to clear some space on my disk. Some of my less important tracks I want to compress further, from 256 down to 128.
Question - is there any difference between...
1) AIFF > 256, then later 256 > 128
or
2) AIFF > 128 in one step
Will 1) sound worse than 2) ??

Yes there is a difference. The algorithm that compress (and dumps the info) will make a pass over the file, focussing on specific areas of the sound profile. If it has already passed over the file, then the second pass will focus on those same areas again. Better to go for one pass.
Will it sound worse? These algorithms are very good, very very good indeed. So only trial and error will tell you. Definitley there will be a difference, but as to whether the difference will be noticeable depends on your playback equipment, and indeed, yourself.
So my advice is to take a few tracks that you know well and try both ways. See which you pefer.

Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. Image loses quality when loaded in Java

Images seem to lose quality when you load them in Java. Try this out to see what I mean... test_out.jpg is smaller than test_in.jpg

Well, it's basically cutting the file in half... 1.69
MB to 862 KB. Doing the same thing in C# keeps the
file size 1.69 MB (no quality lost), but I want to
use Java because it's easier to manipulate pictures
in Java. 800 KB seems a little extreme...There is a lot of difference between no size loss in a file and "no quality loss". Each time you JPG something, some quality is lost even it the size of the file that results is the same as before--it's in the JPS algorithm for comprssion.

Why do Apple photos lose quality when imported to Windows?

When photos taken on an Apple phone are imported to Windows Photoshop Elements 11, the photos seriously lose quality. Why?

A bitmap image (such as a .jpg or .gif) is basically a grid of colors, which are represented by the values (numbers) for how much red, green, and blue of each pixel in the grid to activate when the image is displayed on a monitor or printed.
Some bitmap images (including .jpgs) can also specify a color profile. Applications that support color profiles will adjust the color values before they are displayed. Photoshop honors color profiles, Fireworks does not. Fireworks does not, because most browsers do not; Fireworks displays images as they will be seen on the Web. Photoshop does, because Photoshop can support color profiles for print devices.
Photoshop has a default color profile. If you open an image that does not have a color profile in Photoshop, Photoshop will apply its default color profile to the image and adjust the color values it displays. Photoshop shows you modified data; Fireworks shows you the raw data. This is not a quality issue, because nothing has changed with your image and the applications are operating exactly as they are supposed to.
What you want, I think, is to be able to open your image in Photoshop, and then save the richer view of the colors you see, but without a color profile.

Screen Capture Video Loses Quality When Imported Into iMovie - WHY?

I am using screen capture software to make a video of my screen at 1024x768. The video is for a tutorial. I want to use iMove to get things like transitions and such into the movie, and to add text and audio. The problem is that, although the video looks great in QuickTime, it loses quality significanly when I import into iMove. The text on the screen is blurry, and the quality of everything else is terrible as well.
Is this s limitation of iMove? Can screen capture video be imported? Does it only work with DV?
Also, I tried to convert the file to many other formats, from QuickTime to MPEG-4, so it's not the file type.
If anyone can help me out, I've be very grateful.

Your dimensions are getting in the way. iMovie converts your 1024X768 to a DV Stream file that is 720X480.
One workaround would be to set your display resolution smaller. Try 800X600 (if your windows fit that size).
If you're using Snapz Pro you should set your window capture to 640X480. This size will import nicely into iMovie.
An even better way would be to do all of the work using QuickTime Pro. Again a 1024X768 QT.mov file would not fit on the most common display settings used. When you add the QT Player window the controller would be below the screen and not accessible for most users.
800X600 would make a better file (smaller, too). It would still be 4:3 aspect and would also import into iMovie.

Images lose quality when imported into Pages

when I import images into Pages, they lose quality. They are normal jpg files.
After the import they look a bit fuzzy. I dunno why...

In the Inspector "Measures" there is a button allowing us to reset to the original size.
Of course, the picture will be smaller than the blurred one
or
will be too large and parts will be hidden.

You need to get some way of backing up your files if you care about them. Otherwise you're at risk of data loss, particularly since youre having problems now which could escalate at any time. Running any computer, regardless of operating system, without making backup of important files is taking a rather foolish risk. There are all sorts of ways to make backups; there are even free online storage services such as Dropbox which offer a couple of gigabytes of free space in their servers to which you can back up, if you have no other method.

Hi - I have the disc to upgrade my mac to Snow Leopard. I don't have an external hard drive to back up. If I install the disc will I lose all my documents/photos/music etc?

If everything works perfectly, you should not lose your data.
I don't know about you but I never trust my data "to everything running perfectly". So I in fact back it up twice just to be sure.
IMHO I would hold off the upgrade until you have a disk for backup.
The questions is never will I lose data because that is a certainly. The question is when will it happen. Hence the reason to backup.

Exporting video (PAL DV .avi) to a Mac computer (PAL DV .mov) - will I lose quality?

I have this timeline which I am exporting from Adobe Premiere (cs3). The format is PAL DV, .avi file.
I then have to put this footage into Final Cut (Express) and re-export it as a MOV file (there is a good reason for this). This format is also PAL DV (.mov)
Anyway, my question is: will I lose any quality in the "conversion" ?

If you have CS3 Production Premium or Master Collection it comes with Adobe Encore for DVD burning. You can also create the chapter markers in Compressor before bringing them into DVD SP, or create them directly in DVD SP (provided they are on a GOP boundary).
Alternatively, my company makes an app called QT Edit that will quickly add chapters to a QuickTime file without needing transcode it and it can import marker lists from other apps too.

you shouldn't. Be sure to backupp your iPad before you do the upgrade.
what should happen is that you hook up the iPad, download the iOS5, it installs it, which wipes the iPad, then iTunes automatically restores your apps and settings from backup.
Worst case scenario, as long as iTunes doesn't glitch, it knows what you've downloaded and you can redownload at no cost.
When I did the iOS upgrade, I did it on a new iPad (mine had an issue and I had just exchanged it for a new one) I made my new iPad a restore of my old one, did the upgrade, and my n ew one was an exace replica of my old one, minus a week (it'd been a week since my last backup)

If you hit the Advanced button in the Application Loader and choose the option to backup the device data, all of the data will be backed up, and when it finishes updating the OS, the data will be restored for you.

Ok, so here's my question: I am a macbook pro user which has two user accounts, mine and my wife's. I have installed app's like photoshop elements and aperture and my wife has installed ms office on her side. Our permissions allow each of us to use apps on both sides (i.e when I log in to my side I can use MS word, and she can use photoshop in her side).
I am about to buy my own macbook. On purchase I will copy the HD from my old mac onto the new one. From here on in I intend to delete my wife's profile so there is only one user account on my new machine. By doing this, will I lose access to MS word?? and when she deletes my account on her mac, will she lose access to photoshop??

Ordinarily, any OS X upgrade should never delete anything already on the computer. However, bad things can and do happen sometimes, for all sorts of reasons. In the rare event that the upgrade does not go exactly as expected, a full system backup will be your only protection of your data, and your best means of recovering everything back to your previous useable state.
Personally, as far as major system update or upgrades, I recommend making a full, bootable system clone to an external drive before updating. That way, if the update fails, you can boot from your clone and have your old system fully functional to trouble shoot from, or to simple clone back to your internal drive if you do not want to try the update again.
The shareware apps Carbon Copy Cloner (Bombich software) or SuperDuper (Shirt Pocket software) are the simplest tools to make a full, bootable clone of your current system.

IPhone videos lose quality when shared

Sometimes when i take a video and send it through messages or even email its turns out blurry and just crappy quality on my girlfriends phone.theres one video in particular that im looking for and i can only find the crappy blurry coppy in my messages attachments folder on my MBP.I have an iphone 5 and my gf has the 4s if that helps.just curious to see if anybody else has the same problem or knows how to fix it. When you send a video with a message via messages, the video gets compresses to save data, so the video will look blurry, and crappy quality.
As far as the one you are only finding on the MBP, if you did not import the videos to the computer, and deleted them from the phone, then that could be the only copy you are going to find.

Two Apple ID's, will I lose data when I go to iCloud given that I can only use one?

Like a lot of people (it seems), I have two Apple ID's. One which I set up when I first set up my iTunes on my mac (yahoo) and then a mobileme account which I got shortly after getting my iPhone.
My iTunes account on my Mac defaults to my yahoo Apple ID and my iPhone defaults to my mobileme Apple ID. This hasn't caused me a problem to date as the Mac and iPhone sync without any loss of data (by sheer fluke I think!).
I would however now like to use iCloud in order that I can use the invite function on the calendar on my iPhone. If I set up iCloud using my mobileme Apple ID will I then lose all my purchases etc from my yahoo Apple ID?
To be honest, I'm not entirely clear what iCloud does and whether I will lose any information?

Welcome to the Apple community.
The best thing you can do is to continue to use the same IDs with each service, and migrate your MobileMe account to an iCloud account. This way you will be able to continue to use and access all the data as you always have done.
One thing you must not do, is change the ID you use for iTunes, this will cause you to lose access to any content that you have purchased through the previous account.
If you decide to change the ID that you use for iCloud, to match the one you use for iTunes, then you are going to have to manually move all the data from one account to the other.
