Will reinstalling OS X lion delete my files?

i wanted to know if i reinstalled lion usong lion restore feature, will it delete my documents and apps?

There are two methods,
Reinstalling Just OS X  - does just that, gives you a new copy of OS X and doesn't touch your Users or programs
(unless the program has a kext file in OS X, then of course that gts kicked out, so just reinstall those few programs that do)
Erase and install OS X - requires using Disk Utility first to erase the partiton or drive, this WILL delete all your Users and programs along with OS X, then a new install of OS X with the installer.
However if your having a problem it's best to backup users files off the machine if possible, because even with the Reinstall Just OS X, there could be complications if there is a issue with the drive or it's formatting.

  • Will reinstalling OS X Mavericks delete my files if there are no backup?

My iMac will not start up. It just powers on, then apple logo shows up with a loading bar underneath it and then powers down. I tried performing a disk repair, but it says that it could not be repaired, and to backup the data. Apple has told me to reinstall the software, but I am worried that it will delete my files if I do. Thank you!

    Read this:
OS X Mavericks: Reinstall OS X
Incidentally, EVERYONE should have a backup of their system in case something happens.

  • HT1553 Will uploading Mountain lion delete my files?

Will uploading Mountain Lion Delete my files or do I have to back up my files first?

Yes; having your backups on the same drive as the original data won't help when that drive fails.

  • Will updating to lion delete my files?

I wanted to know if upgrading to Lion will delete my files, apps, etc? MBP 2011

    No.
Unless something goes wrong. Which is why it's recommended that you perform a full backup, and create additional backups of your most critical data, before you perform a major OS upgrade.

  • Quicktime movies will not play if I delete 'media' files

I have created several Quicktime movies so that I can see the movies after I delete the imported media files which are quite large. But after I delete those files I cannot play the Quicktime movie. I get messages saying that the parts cannot be found. If I reinstall the 'media' files, the movie plays again. It seems that the Quicktime movie is somehow linked to the media files. This shoudn't be, should it?
I might add that I was able to export a web size file and sucesessfully upload it to YouTube though.

Well, I'm just saving the movie to the desktop and then trying to play it back after I've deleted the media files.
If by "saving" you mean you are using the "Save As..." QT Pro (or similar menu option) to create a very, very small "reference rather than "standalone" file, then this is your problem. Such a work flow merely creates a QT MOV file that points to the original "media" as the "resource" for playback. Thus all files must be kept on hand for playing. Even moving the resource files from one location to another can break the "path reference" and prevent the files from opening/playing. You best solution is to export your files to a target compression format that meets your playback needs. E.g., if you source media files are DV or AIC (large files), you can export them as "Medium" H.264/AAC files which can be easily viewed on your computer iPod, and/or TV device but take up only a fraction of the original space.

  • Will Reinstalling OS X Lion Erase Files

Since upgrading to OS X Lion my Mac's performace has really slowed down and I want to resintall the OS to see if it will imporve performance. The issues is that I don't know if the "Reinstall Mac OS X" option in the Recovery partition will erase all my data (ie photos, movies, docs etc...). I've searched multiple forums for answeres but I haven't been able to get a clear answer (some say yes, others say no) and none of Apple's documentation states whether or not the users data will be perserved during reinstallation.
Can someone verify that "Reinstall Mac OS X" option in the recovery partition will perserve all user data?
    Thanks everyone.

Well it all depends on what you mean by Re-Install the OS.
If you Re-install Over the Top of your current install no other files should be touched, removed, deleted or changed. But as stated above always have a backup just in case.
A reinstall like this really doesn't do much and IMHO will not improve the overall performace of the computer.
The we have a REAL REINSTALL.
That is where you Erase the drive, Wipe it clean of all info, data. OS, programs and all user data. Then Re-Install the OS and your programs then copy your personal data back onto the system from your time machine backup or from a backup you made of those files manually.
This type of Re-Install may or may not improve performance but at least you know that nothing left over from the upgrade is causing the slower then expected performance.
To do this type of Re-Install first make sure you have your files backed up. You have the original system disc that came with your system, especially the Applications DVD that came with your system and a good fast internet connection as Lion has to be downloaded from the internet (unless yo made a Lion Install USB thumb drive).

  • Will reinstalling from setup disk delete my data files?

I can't do a thing with my MacBook. The cursor drags phantom selections, the track pad won't work properly and it takes ages for typed words to display. I have lost my applications in Finder and the disk utility is telling me there is a bad file. I've deleted the cache and done the PRAM thing to no avail. It is fully charged. If I reinstall the original disk, will I lose my data files and pictures, etc.?
    Elaine

    Hi, Elaine.
Go to Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and check on the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard disk. Also, while there, select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity? Please let us know how much space remains available on it. Repair permissions on it.
There is a way to reinstall without losing your files, but it may not help if your drive is failing, so we need to determine its condition before proceeding.

  • Will updating to Mountain Lion delete files?

I updated one Mac and a folder full of files on my desktop was deleted in the installation of Mountain Lion. Was this user error or will it happen again?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You won't lose data but you must make a backup because things like losing folders can happen during the Mac OS X upgrade. I recommend you to buy an external drive, create two volumes on it and use one for Time Machine and the other for Carbon Copy Cloner

  • It is my first time updating an operating system on my mac.will lion delete my files off my hard drive when I upgrade to lion?

I reccently bought my imac around christmas of 2009, and this is the first time I have ever upgraded the operating system on my mac. will upgrading to lion completely wipe out all the files and data on my hard drive?

No, it won't. But you should make a backup of your files, document your settings and check application compatibility.

  • Will upgrading to Mountain Lion delete MS Office?

I have MS Office installed on Lion OSX and I am really worried about what will happen once I upgrade to Mountain Lion. Will I lose the installation? Will I have to reinstall from the disc? Or will office survive the upgrade and appear in Mountain Lion?  I lost my disc a long time ago. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro.

Yes it is compatible so with will not delete it or render it unusable.
See this article to make sure you have 2008 or later.

Yes, they should not be distrubed. However, it's always wise to have a backup.

  • Will updating to Snow Leopard delete my files & prefrences

I just ordered the family pack. And was concerned about losing data while updating to snow leopard. What are general precautions before making such a giant change to my iMac?

I just ordered the family pack. And was concerned about losing data while updating to snow leopard. What are general precautions before making such a giant change to my iMac?
As a general rule it is a very good idea to have a full backup before doing a major upgrade, such as moving to Snow Leopard.
Assuming you have an external disk, SuperDuper (free version) or Carbon Copy Cloner would be very good choices to make that special pre-upgrade backup.
Historicall, you get 3 (and a half) installation options (on Friday we will know for sure), but they have been in the past
    a) Upgrade in place, which replaces the operating system and leaves all applications and personal files alone.
    b) Archive and Install, which moves the current OS into a saved folder, installs the new OS from scratch, but keeps all your personal files and a few global system preferences, such as your network settings.
    c) Clean install, which erases the disk and creates a new clean file system. All your data is removed. Unless you have a backup, you will of course loose your data.
c and a half) Typically used for transferring your data from an older Mac to a new Mac. This allows you to attached your old Mac to the new Mac via Firewire and put the old Mac into Target mode, then the new Mac during system setup, copies over your old system settings, applications, and personal data.
This "c and a half" mode as I'm calling it, can also be used with an external disk containing a backup of your system.
I would only use this "c and a half" if something happened that causes you to loose your original data, and you were then using the backup.
It is always possible that Snow Leopard will have additional installation options, and we will find out Friday.

  • Reinstall of Mountain Lion deleted everything!!

The other day my 13" Macbook Pro froze. So I held the power button to turn it off and when I turned it back on there was a flashing folder with a question mark. I called apple support and they said to reinstall Mountain Lion, which is what it had when I first bought it Nov 2013 but I had upgraded it to Mavericks. But when it was finished and restarted, my computer was like it was when I first bought it. I went through the whole process of setting it up and creating a user account etc. When I was finally able to look around on my computer I soon realized everything was gone. I've looked in the hard drive in the users folder, but only the account I just made and the folder "shared" is in there. The person on the phone told me it would not erase anything, and yet it did. Is there any way to recover my old user account?

Restore with a Time Machine back up or a boot clone.

  • HT201250 If I have a Hard Drive with files already on it, will backing up my MacBook Pro delete the files already on the Hard Drive?

I have recently bought a Hard Drive to store files that can no longer fit on my MacBook Pro. I also want to use this Hard Drive as a back up for my entire computer. Will backing up my computer delete the files i already have on my Hard Drive??????

    It shouldn't.
If you are planning to use Time Machine, then no, it will never overwrite files that aren't part of an old Time Machine backup; only old data put there by Time Machine will ever be touched by Time Machine.

  • Is it safe to delete .fpj files?

In RH9, using Source Control 3.1.
Trying to bring in topics from several other projects. Somehow, we have managed to get all the files we want into the project as displayed in
    RoboSource
    Windows Explorer
But when each of us tries to open the project in RH9, none of us can see the topics we brought in from the other projects. Upon doing some research here in the forums, we opened a few fpj files in these folders and saw that they are scrambled.
There are dozens of these folders, we would prefer not to have to edit them manually.
So, long story long, is it safe to delete them - will they rebuild when the project is reopened?

    Hi there
When you create a folder in RoboHelp, the FPJ is part of the XML structure used by RoboHelp to manage and track topics. I would think RoboHelp will become awfully confused and project corruption will ensue if you start deleting FPJ files.
    Cheers... Rick
