Will Time Capsule replace an ATV 1st Gen?

Will the Time Capsule act as a replacemnt for my aging ATV1st Gen? It has a large HD capacity and wireless streaming, so will sync with iTunes and stream content to my Airport Expresses?
Thanks.

No. Time Capsule is a router and back up repository. It will not stream data to your TV.

  • ATV 1st Gen keeps shutting down - can I swap drives?

Some months back I bought a 160GB ATV 1st Gen to replace my 40GB model. Now, sometimes when I come to use the 'new' one, I often find I can't switch it on and it's dead. When this happens I have to pull out the power lead, re-insert and let it boot up again when all's fine. Until the next time.
Has anyone any idea what could be wrong?
If the problem's terminal for my ATV and it may be a power supply problem or other non-HD problem, can I try salvaging things by 'simply' taking out the 160GB drive and fitting it into the 40GB model which works fine?
    Thanks.

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is app and data safe!

  • I have a new time capsule (replace my old time capsule).  I want to erase my old one.  My computer does not see the old one anymore, how do I connect it (the old TC is not connected to modem)

I have a new time capsule (replace my old time capsule).  I want to erase my old one.  My computer does not see the old one anymore, how do I connect it (the old TC is not connected to modem).  I want to erase it and then use it as either a second hard drive (sired/sirelesly?) or as a hard drive/bridge.  So,
    1.  why doesn't my cmputer see the old TC
2  once i have solved that, how do I erase the old one
    3.  Can I use the old one as a supplemental hard drive
         a.  wired?
         b. wirelessly?
    4.  Can I use the old one as a range extender?
I know .. a lot of questions but I would appreciate any help.

    1. Because it is either the same IP as the new one or hidden by being plugged in as a second router.
To access it, isolate one computer from the existing network and plug it directly by ethernet to a lan port of the TC. Use the erase function in the TC to remove all the content of the hard disk.
Then go to the internet tab, connection sharing and select off bridged. You can then reconnect the TC to the network.. and the computer as well. The TC will act as bridged device.. getting IP from the main router and should then appear correctly in Airport utility.
    2. I covered in 1. But you just go in airport utility manual setup. disk, and you will see the erase function. You can also set it to bridge and leave the erase until you put it back in the network.. but be careful you erase the right one.
    3. You can use the old TC via wired or wireless.. although I would always stick to wired connection if possible. Speed on wireless is 10x worse than wired.
Also note the reliability goes down dramatically after 2 years.. a series 1 3 years old or more is ebay fodder unless you want to repair it. Do not trust vital data to it.. when it dies you will have issues recovering it.
    4. Yes, all apple routers will function as wireless extenders. when you do that the ethernet ports turn off so it becomes a purely wireless device.. strange apple decision on what you want to use your TC for.

  • Does time capsule replace my existing router?

I currently have a Linksys 8.11n router.  Will the Time Capsule replace this router, or should I continue to network via the Linksys?

If the linksys is merely a router and plugged into your modem then you can replace it..
If it has the modem inside it,, then no you cannot replace it.

  • Will time capsule backup file on pc partion

will time capsule backup files on pc partion

Not using Time Machine, which will only backup a Mac.
You could manually copy the files over to the Time Capsule disk....or better yet, use a PC application like Genie Timeline Pro to set this up automatically.

  • Will time capsule backup my pc?

Will Time Capsule backup my pc?  Do I need a separate external hard drive and genie pro?

Time capsule is a router with a hard disk inside. .it offers SMB access.
There is no backup software in the TC.. it is Time Machine in the Mac that does the work.
For PC you can use any backup package you like that can deal with network drive.. vast majority do so.. even the crappy windows one.
But the warning is there when you mix TM and data on a mixed network you can get into trouble from the TM side.. the file storage from PC is fine.

  • We have 3 macs and one pc in our house. will time capsule work for backup?

we have 3 macs and one pc. will time capsule be suitable

If you intend to backup automatically using Time Machine, the Time Capsule will work just fine with your Macs if they are running the Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion operating systems..
But Time Machine does not exist for PCs, so you will need to look around for a similar application for Windows. I haven't used it, but a neighbor of mine who has both Macs and PCs reports that he has had good luck with Genie Timeline.
A Google search will provide links for the application if you are interested.

  • Will time capsule back up an external hard drive

Will time capsule back up an external hard drive?

Time Machine will backup the drive to the Time Capsule if it is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and it is connected directly to your Mac by USB or FireWire....and it is not "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Options.

  • I like the idea of auto back-up for my new iMac, Ipad and PC Netbook, particularly if I can access all files and data stored on any device.  But I have a Conceptronic router.  Will Time Capsule work with this and how?

    4.  What happend when a visitor logs onto my existing wireless router?
I'm new to Macs (well a returning user having started with Mac Plus!!) and not very technical.  Any help / advice will be much appreciated.

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

  • I have OS X 10.6.8 and want to get a backup device such as time capsule.  Will time capsule recognise my OS version?

Will the latest time capsule be the most suitable device for backup from my desktop OS X 10.6.8.  Will Time Capsule connect with Snow Leopard?

As The hatter says, a directly-connected external HD (USB or FireWire) is the fastest and most reliable way to back up a desktop Mac.
A Time Capsule will work, of course, but is mainly intended for wireless backups of laptops.
You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Can Time Capsule replace my modem?

I would like to know if time capsule can replace my router? I have a couple of reasons for possibly getting a TC. One reason is to hopefully stream my movies to  my Apple TV2, without the need for powering up my iMac, the other is to use the Airport Express card to extend the reach of my WIFI. I just hoped that my modem wouldn't be required as well.
    Thanks

Can Time Capsule replace my modem?
No, the Time Capsule does not have a modem onboard.

  • Will time capsule also back up external hard drives?

will time capsule also back up external hard drives?

Yes. If you're using Time Machine, open its preferences and ensure the drives aren't excluded; Time Machine can't back up drives in some formats, such as FAT32.

  • HT1175 will time capsule backup programs?

    Will Time Capsule backup Programs?

Great!  That answers one question.  Some of the "programs" are Mac and some are Windows but they are all in the Applications folder on my computer so I guess it will back them up.
Next question...I'm asking this because Apple is giving me a new hard drive because they have determined that my Seagate HD may have some issues so mine is being included in a voluntary fix.  I am performing a full backup and hope (and assume) that once I get the new HD installed, I will just be able to update my computer form the backup on the external HD and that my computer will be back to normal.  Is that right? OR, am I also going to have to reinstall all those programs on my new HD?

The iPhone and iPad back up to iTunes on your Mac. Then, when your Mac backs up to the Time Capsule, the iOS backups are copied over as well.
    Or
The iPhone and iPad can backup to iCloud
The iPhone and iPad cannot backup directly to the Time Capsule. See this Apple Support document for more details on backups.

Will Time Capsule support  a fibre optic internet signal via a modem?

Thanks, really appreciate the prompt response. Have you also been "forced" by the installation of Mountain Lion to use the TC as your principal network router? If so, does this reduce the performance of your network at all?
