Win 7 on Ext drive with Lion
From reading some of the posts it appears you cannot load Win 7 onto a Mac using bootcamp and an external drive. But- please confirm.
I have an Intel-based iMac (early 2008) and 2 external drives. I have Snow Leopard installed on the Mac and just installed a copy of that install on external drive 1. I partitioned the ext drive for 3 partitions- one for SL, one for Data and one for Win 7 (ideally). The OS partition is ExFAT. The other 2 are Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I can boot from the SL partition from the ext drive with no issue- works just like the internal drive.
The second external drive (EHD2) has 2 partitions- one for Lion and one for data. I can also boot from that drive with no issue and am currently running the Mac with Lion.
The sequence I would really like to follow is this:
1- set up EHD1 with SL and Win7 and see how it works out.
2- if #1 is working as expected, I would like to erase my internal drive, create 2 partitions (Mac OS and Win7). I plan to do a clean install of Lion on the OS partition and copy over my apps, etc from the EHD1 SL install. I am doing the clean install of Lion because the install now on EHD2 has issues- I did not migrate properly.
3- if that works, then I would like to copy the Win 7 install from EHD1 into the internal partition reserved for Win 7.
End result- I have Lion on my internal drive. I have SN on an external drive (running older MS Office that I do not want to repurchase for Lion). And- I can boot into Win7 with either ext or int drives. If the EHD1 install works well, I may not even move the Win7 install to the internal drive and keep the space available for data. And I can use the EHD2 for other things, or maybe just as a OS backup.
So- that is what I would LIKE to do. I would appreciate some advice as to what I CAN do and the right sequence to pursue. Thanks in advance. Sorry for such a long post.
Mark
TH- thanks for the reply. After I posted this I kept looking around and now I understand. I did not realize Windows required the internal port. Another nail in the coffin for Windows vs Mac (IMHO). I was really amazed at how easy it was to copy a Mac OS image- put on an external drive and boot it. Felt Windows should be the same.
I erased and did a clean Lion install on my internal drive and placed a Windows partition on it in prep for installing Win 7. Boot camp gave me the right options- so I should be off to the races. Thanks again.

How can I retrieve the old email messages from Mail on an external hard drive which operated with Snow Leopard, then transfer the old Emails into my current version of mail operating with Lion?

New iMac 20" won't boot 10.3.9 volume from either of two external drives.
Maybe it is the fact that the volumes on my external drive are 10.3.9 and the iMac is 10.4.7?? This ext. drive house the drive from my dead G5 which I have been booting from thru my old G3 (also running 10.3.9), to use my current data and programs from the G5. I thought I'd be able to boot from it on the iMac.
Option/power up, only shows the iMac's HD as an option to boot from.
Thanks, Dave
iMac 20" 2.16GHz, G3 PowerBook (Pismo 10.3.9) Mac OS X (10.4.7):o( I had just read the KB article you linked to, then came back here. Unfotunately, I had a G5 that shipped with 10.3.2, that did not come with Setup Assistant. It is now updated to 10.3.9, but that is no help (I don't think).
Other variables are that the G5 is dead. I am running it's OS from an external drive thru my old PowerBook G3 (also running 10.3.9). The article says be sure your old computer's firmware is up to date.
My Powerbook matches the link for current firmware ver. 4.1.8. I don't know if the G5 OS's firmware ver. (running from the ext. drive thru Powerbook) matters, but it appears to be one version old at v. 5.1.4, when current seems to be 5.1.5f2. (I doubt this can be updated because there is no more G5 machine!)
So can I still use Target Disk Mode which I used for PowerBook to G5 long ago. If so, I hope I can selectively move only the parts I want. The G5 was purchased used and had ton's of eroneous stuff on it.
I know I can do this (repeat)...
my mantra,
Dave

Encrypted USB Flash Drive with Lion OS X questions
Like many of us, we don't want our USB flash drives lost with our valuable data on them. So I've used the encryption function in Lion OS X in Disk Utility to make an encrypted flash drive. This has some limitations as I read but what I want to know is can I use this usb drive on a DIFFERENT computer that also has OS X Lion? I don't have another mac w/ lion to test it on.
This is important to me because I've got a laptop and God forbid, but if it was stolen or destroyed, will I be able to access my USB drive with important data on it by plugging it into another mac computer w/ lion?
Also, as a follow up question - I haven't yet made an encrypted DMG file (tho I plan to soon) and place that on a usb drive for multiple platform use, but how functional is this? Can you add and copy files within the DMG file? I thought a dmg file, once created, couldn't change in size, MB's, etc.
Basically, I'd like to use the most user friendly type of way of securing my files and data on USB flash drives. I have tried TrueCrypt and have it installed but I just don't prefer using it. I like the simplicity of the former approach, though it has it's limitations.NightBird wrote:

How about any computer instead?
Hardware based encryption is superior to software encryption which can be hacked or not available if your needs change.
This will work with any computer, and has a nice keychain so you can attach to something like your wrist or retractable key cable.
http://www.amazon.com/IronKey-Secure-Hardware-Encrypted-Flash-D20402A/dp/B000RXY V5U
There are also hardware based encypted external hard drives with their own keys and password keypads, also work with any computer if your needs are larger then a USB can handle. -
Wipe drive with Lion or Mavericks?
I have a Macbook Pro that I want to securely wipe. It is currently running Lion. Is there any benefit to downloading Mavericks first and then wiping it or should I just go ahead and wipe it with Lion OS?
Thanks.1.) Can I wipe it straight from Disk Utility, or do I need the disc or USB with the Lion OS connected in order to secure wipe the drive?
2.) What happens after it is completely wiped? How can I put Mavericks on it?
Thanks. -
HAL doesn't recognize my ext. drive with 1500GB, the 500GB one works
Hi there
Some days ago I bought a 1500GB external harddrive, but after plugin it in via USB, it doesn't appear in my file manager. I tested it with thunar and pcmanfm, with both it didn't work. I don't think, that it's their fault, I think HAL doesn't like my new drive. My older one with 500GB is automounted as it should be. And I also don't think, that its a hardware issue, because in an ubuntu live-session it works with both harddrives.
This is how the two drives are partitioned
Disk /dev/sdb: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0008941c
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 60801 488384001 83 Linux
Disk /dev/sdc: 1500.3 GB, 1500301910016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 182401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0004aa3c
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 1 182401 1465136001 83 Linux
As you can see, no difference here. The drive with 1500GB has xfs as filesystem, the 500GB has jfs, but that isn't the reason, I tried many filesystems on the 1500GB one and it didn't work with all of them
In the AUR, there appeared a new packaged called devicekit and I thought, that this might spit out some helpful informations. I used the command "devkit -m"

If you have some other test tools or command lines or whatever I could do to give you more or better informations, please let me know!
p.s.: Right in this moment I was thinking about recompiling HAL with less patches, but even Arch uses many, so I'm not really sure which one or which combination could even be the reason. But I'll try it without any patch now right after posting this thread.I'm having a problem kind of like this. I have a 1TB Western Digital MyBook. It has the option of running in RAID0 or RAID1. I have it in RAID0 for more storage. My computer seems to find it, but it doesn't mount and it doesn't show up in /dev/.

I'm using a custom kernel and I can't boot the standard arch kernel to test because it says something like "/dev/sda5" cannot be found and then it panics (the same startup options work fine on my custom kernel, the standard flips out for some reason). -
Please help! Cannot access TC backups on new hard drive with Lion!
I know this seems like a generic posting, and believe me that I have searched through countless posts to find the situation most similar to mine. To start, the basic story (I am pretty computer illiterate, so excuse the lack of terminology):
-My computer was working slow, beach balling, etc. two weeks ago - took to Apple Genius Bar for help and they suggested need for new hard drive. I already had a hard drive crash in January, but since I have had a Time Capsule running Time Machine since September 2009, I hooked it right up and restored from a backup with no issue... so I wasn't worried about this. I waited to make sure that I had the most recent backup (and needed to use my computer for law school for a couple days), so I turned it in a day later immediately after a complete incremental backup via TM on my TC.
-Got my computer back from the Apple "depot" with new hard drive and hard drive cable.
-Had an extremely hard time getting my TC to link to my computer and via AppleCare phone help, realized that Apple had given me back my computer with Leopard, and they said that I needed to go back to the store to get a Lion reinstall since the backups had been done in Lion.
-Went back to Apple store, reinstalled Lion... they told me there would be no issue once I got home and hooked up to TC. Connected to TC via ethernet and went through "set up" procedure as if it was new computer - could never get past the "Select the Disk" page. Either it was beach-balling or just sitting there, and I couldn't click continue or anything.
-Called AppleCare again, they said to try it through Migration Assistant instead of Set Up... again, could not connect to TC. They said it was too complicated to do over the phone and sent me back to the store...
-By now, I am on vacation and spent 5, yes FIVE, hours at another store trying to migrate the data to no avail. I obviously don't know everything they tried, but I know they tried installing each operating system since Leopard, going through set up and migration assistant, and doing a disk repair of the TC. None of this worked. Every single time my TC connects and you can see the title of the drive ("Data") and the two separate backups ("emilysmac" was my old computer and "emilysmacbookpro" was the dummy one we tried to make). Emilysmacbookpro was accessible with no data on it, but once we clicked on emilysmac it just said "connecting" forever and never did anything.
Basically:
-300GB of my TC shows that it has been used, so I know something is there.
-I can also pull up the data on another computer, and it shows files dated from September 2009 up to the date I last updated, but they do not look how they used to - they are "Unix Executable" files and cannot open through Time Machine.
I have a really hard time thinking that my TC AND my computer hard drive failed at the same time - which is actually what Apple suggested to me. Is there anything that anyone knows that will help?! I am desperate here! This TC had backups of all my music, pictures and law school work over the past 2.5 years. Any help would be much appreciated!PS I have also looked through Pondini's site, but I am not sure if I am missing something since I don't totally understand all of it. Thanks again!

I am trying to create a Windows 7 Image Backup on my Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit PC.
I have two bootable partitions on my hard drive. One is NTFS and contains the Win-7 system files.
The other is FAT-32 and contains a Windows-ME system.
When it comes to selecting the drives (partitions) for backing up, both are marked as System, and both are selected. Both are also "greyed out) - I cannot uncheck them.
Furthermore, the Windows-7 imaging utility supplied with Windows-7 returns an error saying it cannot image the disk because it contains a partition that is not NTFS.
How can I select and image ONLY the NTFS partition that contains the Win-7 system? That is what I want to do.Any of the products listed below will backup the contents (all partitions) of your disk drive. The only limitation is that you must install the backup software in Windows 7. You will perform a "Disk and Partition" backup by manually selecting
the disk and all partitions (NTFS / FAT32) and the Master boot Record (MBR) on the drive. The destination / where the Image Backup will be stored should be an external USB drive. With a "Disk and Partition" backup you can restore any partition
to your existing drive or the entire backup (to the same disk drive or a new drive).

Problems sharing external hard drives with Lion
I have 2 external hard drives connected to my imac. I had no problem sharing and accessing my external drives on other computers (pc & mac). Recently I just upgraded my mac os to Lion and since I am having problems accessing my external drives on my PC (windows 7).
On my PC in the shared folder I can see the external drive folders but I am getting an error code when I try to open them. I have no problem accessing my imac folders on my PC, just my external drive folders.
I would like some help because it would be nice to access them wirelessly on my PC without having to disconnect them from my iMac.
Rome.My external hard drive was formatted in the FAT32 format--my iBook had no trouble reading or writing on this drive, and neither did my family's Dell deskop.
If I recall correctly, the FAT32 format cannot store files larger than 4GB. Also, you will have to partition the drive. My 160GB drive was split into 4 parts, each about 30GB in size. This is another limitation of the FAT32 format.
Formatting my drive was such a pain--and time consuming--that I didn't bother to format the remaining 30 or so gigabytes.
I've reformatted my drive to be HFS and will likely do some work with our home network so that our Dell will be able to send files to my machine & then to the external hard drive.
Programs exist for Windows machines to allow them to read a HFS (Mac-formatted) volume. If you want to be able to use all space possible on the hard drive, purchasing such a program may be your best option. -
Snow Leopard Bootable USB Flash Drive with Lion
I'd like to create a bootable Snow Leopard Flash Drive, after upgrading to Lion. I have multiple Macs with some expensive legacy software and an Apple USB modem (32 bit) I use out in rural areas. I'm assuming this will be a viable solution - is there something I'm overlooking? Has anyone else out there taken this route?
Thank you. That would have to be a fairly large flash drive in order to install OS X and any PPC aps on it. You'd be much better off installing Snow Leopard on a separate partition on your internal HDD or an external one. (Since you have multiple macs, installing on an external HDD seems to be best.

How can i partition my hard drive with lion on it and install snow leopard from time machine
How do I partition my hard drive which has lion on it and reinstall os6 from my time machine?
You going to need a second harddrive. It is riskie to resize your haddrive with live data on it. You need a backup of the data. That said, you might as well copy your data to the second harddrive. Repartition. Then copy the data back. I bought a 128gig flash drive from walmart for $32.
There were repartition commands introduced in 10.4.6 to repartition the harddrive.
For what it is worth, you can non-destructively partition a harddrive from single user mode in 10.4.6 or greater. Of course, you should have a backup of the harddrive.

Can't put files on a USB or hard drive with Lion
I've installed Lion on my MacBook Pro (i5) about 2 weeks ago.
Yesterday i want to put a movie on my USB, put nothing happend.
You see that he is copying the movie, but after that it copied the movie, it's still not on my USB.
I tried it with another USB but still nothing happened.
I think Lion is the problem, but I'm not sure.
Does someone has the same problem, or know how to solve this?
All help is welcome!
Bjorn VRYes, I formatted 1 USB stick and the other one had plenty of space left.

Bootable ext. drive with 10.5/internal with 10.4?
I run 10.4.11 on my intel and want to keep it for now. I also have a lacie 500 fw which I want to install 10.5 on as a bootable disk. Do I just format the hd and load 10.5 on it, do I partition it? I have some older programs which I don't want to lose and run with 10.4. If this is the right way, do I just set the start up disk each time I want to change? Are there complications with this. I also want to use this hd as a back up disk.
Cheers, RoughcutsThat's a lot of questions in such a short paragraph.
You can install Leopard on the external and boot from it, and switch back and forth between the two using System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane.
To install Leopard, the drive should be partitioned using the +Partition Map Scheme+ of +GUID Partition Table+. You can check what it is currently by running Disk Utility, selecting the drive in the sidebar (not the volume indented below the drive), and looking at the details at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.
If it says +GUID Partition Table+, you can proceed with installation. If it says +Apple Partition Map+ (or something else) you should re-partition the drive. Technically, Intel Macs can boot from drive that is +Apple Partition Map+, but the Mac OS X installer not will allow it to be select as the target for installation unless it is +GUID Partition Table+. Installing the Mac OS X system will not delete the existing data on the volume, but you should make a backup of important data, just in case something bad happens. You may want to run +Repair Disk+ in Disk Utility +First Aid+ tab, just to check the drive before running the installation.
If you need to change the +Partition Map Scheme+, with the drive selected in the sidebar, go to the Partition tab. NOTE: THIS WILL ERASE THE DRIVE. Reset the +Volume Scheme+ to the number of partition you want (even if the number is the same as current). Click on the Options button. In the dialog that pops up, select +GUID Partition Table+. Back on the main window, set the format type to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ and Apply the change. This will re-partition and reformat the drive.
I also want to use this hd as a back up disk.
If you are backing up stuff from the internal drive, that should be fine. You may want to create a partition to use for the backups and a partition to use for the Leopard boot volume. You don't have to, but it may make maintenance of the volumes easier (if you ever need to erase one volume while keeping the other). If you are cloning to make the backup, then you probably need to use a separate partition. -
Using 2 ext. drives with a MacBook?
I want to upgrade from LE8 to Logic Studio. My MacBook's hard drive, though, has
only 37G of free space. Looking at Apple's system requirements, I get the feeling I may need additional hard drive space for the exs samples and other content. Even though I'll only be installing Logic (and not Main Stage, etc) it also seems prudent not to ask the MacBook's internal HD to run both the application as well as the samples.
The MacBook has only a single Firewire port. I currently have an external hard
drive connected there to record my audio files to. Can I load the exs samples onto a second external drive and plug that into the available port on the separate drive I currently
use?
Put more briefly: Can I daisy chain firewire drives, using one for recording and
one for exs
sample storage?
JimThe solution you suggested is perfectly reasonable, however if you are running a large number of audio files and EXS files you may run into bandwidth issues.
You could always get a larger firewire drive and use the other one to archive stuff, but to be honest i think you would be perfectly fine using a USB 2 drive to stream + record audio. Are you using a firewire or USB audio interface? -
Backing up iMac and photos stored on an external drive to another ext drive
Hi
I have been searching everywhere for a solution to my back-up procedure. But there are so many different options and scenarios and I am getting so confused. At the moment I have an iMac with a 1TB HD. Very little of it is used up as all my photos are stored on a 1 TB external HD and managed through Lightroom. At the moment I am backing up both drives using Time Machine to another 2TB ext drive. I don't really feel comfortable only using Time Machine to back up all my photos. And maybe that is only because I dont really understand how it works, especially when it comes to overwriting the data (which I have not had to do yet - even though I have had my iMac for over two years and I have about 400GB of photos on my 1TB external drive). What I would like to do (but am not sure how) is have two identical ext drives with my photos on that I can swap regularly and also use between my iMac and my new MacBook Pro which I am getting next week. I want to continue backing up my iMac HD with Time Machine and possibly even have a bootable clone. It would also be nice to be able to carbon the 1TB ext drive to my 2TB drive alongside my TM backups. So I will therefore have two exact copies of my drive with my photos on it. And a back up drive with TM backups and a copy of the photos (in a separate folder or something). But I am so confused about what is the best way to go about this.
Thank you so much in advance for your help or taking the time to read this looong explanation.Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to another one...
