Windows 8.1 - Black Screen while online

I use FireFox all the time. Would love to know how to fix the problem of black screens. I use Windows 8.1 and the black screens only happen when I am on the internet. Been told these are called 'hangs' but they never go back to the original screen.

BBDunn, welcome to the forum.
When requesting help you should always include the make/model of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.
I suggest trying IE to see if you have the same outcome.  I have found that Win 8.1 is somewhat touchy with its interactions.  In fact, I reverted to Win 8.

Unable to install Windows 7! Black screen?
Hey everyone!
Some background info:
I built my computer ~2 years ago and it worked fine for about half a year, until it crashed. Since then I've been unable to reinstall Windows and I kinda forgot about it... which sucks! So please help me get it up and running again :)
Motherboard: GigaByte Z68
Processor: Intel Core i3
HDD: Seagate Barucada 1TB (st31000524as)
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
My problem:
When I boot from the windows cd (original), sometimes I get stuck at a black screen after "Windows is starting" or the black "loading files" screen. Sometimes it just takes a while but I eventually get to the install menu.
When I am about to chose my hdd, it says it can't install on it. I deleted all partitions, created a new one and formated it (took about 1 hour), still not able to install.
I tried booting from my GigaByte cd, and it went through some kind of install (not sure what it did, it was weird because it's actually made for backups). After I chose "reboot" I was able to install on my hdd again. But after I got to 100% i got
stuck at the black screen again! I waited for a couple hours before I had to turn it off, so I'm back where I started. :/
I always google stuff, and people said the black screen problems could be related to other drives/usb stuff connected to my pc. I only have 1 hdd and 1 usb for mouse/keyboard... I tried disconnecting it but it didnt work and also it doesnt make sense since
I need to reconnect it to click on stuff anyway...
People also said I should try booting with F8 and choose "low res", didn't work either. Other people said "connect a secondary screen", I have a hdmi screen and a rgb screen, I tried all combinations of them and nothing seemed to work...
I also have some confusion with the XHD/RAID/IDE/AHCI settings. I am only using one HDD, so I figured AHCI makes more sense for me - sine i have a SATA hdd and windows 7 64 bit.
However, when I load "Optimized System Defaults" from BIOS, it sets SATA mode to IDE...? When I reboot I get a warning screen that says the system is running in IDE mode and I should switch to AHCI for optimal performance.
How do I know if my system supports AHCI or not, what should I use?
Whenever I select IDE, and I enter Windows installation, it can't even find my hdd!
Only when I select AHCI it finds the hdd, but it won't let me install on it.
I've been strugling for DAYS, so i REALLY appreciate help. :) Also, I've tried making "boot cds/usb", and I have no experience with linux so it's really frustrating. Please don't suggest going linux unless it's really necessary. :( I only have a Knoppix
live CD, but I find the whole linux system so confusing I wasn't really able to do anything, despite several "guides" and youtube videos. I have a computer that's barely been used and a original windows CD, shouldn't I have all I need to repair my
system?
Sorry about the long post, I'll be eternally grateful if someone has any clues!

I am not sure which specific issue that is, but it definitely sounds like a hardware issue rather than a software or settings issue.  Windows should not have any issues installing; if it does, that would usually point to a hardware issue of some sort.
It could even be your motherboard.  Your best bet is to disconnect EVERYTHING that is not needed from the motherboard, including RAM sticks except for the least amount possible, and try installing Windows with that configuration.
Example: you need the power supply, so connect that.  If you're installing from a CD/DVD, then you need a CD/DVD drive.  You need at least 2 GB of RAM.  You need to be able to turn on the computer, so the on/off switch needs to be connected
to the motherboard.  You will need a mouse and keyboard.  And so on.  If this bare-minimum configuration does not work, start replacing items: use a different RAM stick, use a different mouse, use a different keyboard, etc.  If, after you
do all this, it still does not work, then I would suspect that your motherboard has an issue.  You can also try resetting the CMOS on your motherboard.  Some motherboards have a jumper for that, and for others, simply removing the CMOS battery will
do it.
As far as IDE, AHCI, and RAID settings are concerned, this should not matter so long as whichever setting it is on when Windows is installed is the same after it is installed.  For example, if it is installed using IDE, then you need to stick with IDE.
If you installed it with AHCI, then you need to stick with AHCI.  Changing it after installation can make Windows not boot.  There are, of course, ways around that, but it is easiest to simply be consistent.

• F.E.A.R. 2 black screen while using Soundblaster X-Fi

This is my second attempt to get some support for a problem that is plaguing many trying to play F.E.A.R 2 with a Soundblaster X-Fi. We have been on the official forums for WBGames now for the past two weeks asking for help. Many were able to find solutions by updating their codecs however there are many of us that still cannot get into the game. WBGames official response it as follows...
Dear, xxx
Regarding your sound acceleration error and the sound cards you have used, we apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced.
At the moment, we have been noticed that certain Creative sound cards (X-Fi, Sound Blaster and Audigy) and Realtek are presenting incompatibility issues with the F.E.A.R. 2 application. Unfortunately, Creative Labs have not yet released a patch to solve this situation, as other companies like Nvidia have worked on.
F.E.A.R. 2 is designed to function with Windows XP/Vista compatible graphics and sound cards. Drivers for these devices are provided by Windows itself or the respecti've card manufacturers and may occasionally result in incompatibility problems beyond our control.
If there is anything else we can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to contact us by email at ">[email protected] m or by phone 080-0664-9456 (in Germany) during the hours of EST :00 pm - 0:00 pm, PST: 0am- 8pm MON-FRI.
Thank you for contacting Warner Brothers and have a great day.

I thought that someone with creative labs would be interested in either responding or releasing some kind of a statement in regards to this.
The current problem for us is when we try to launch the game a small animated orb runs at the bottom right of the screen while the game loads. At the end of the animation we hear a small chime and the screen goes black as though it is about to load the intro videos. But we get nothing. The screen remains black. I have exhausted all of their solutions, I have updated drivers and tried the latest beta drivers from Creative. I have removed, replaced, and updated codecs. Video card drivers are updated, etc.
Basically we are faced with the following dilema. We can disable the sound card in Windows and the game plays however with no sound. We can run the game in safe mode which manually disables the sound card and the game plays but with no sound. Leave the sound card enabled and run the game in normal mode and we get a black screen.
PLEASE, can someone with Creative Labs respond to this? We are looking for answers and would very much like to play this game.Message Edited by djdouglas on 02-20-2009 09:39 [email protected]

solace wrote:
Pardon me but i'm looking your Quad SLI setup a potential culprit to your problems. Have you tried disabling SLI mode to see if the problem can be resolved?
That was my first thought when I encountered this problem. I took the steps troubleshooting video. Disabled SLI, Physically removed one video card. Updated drivers, etc. I am currently running the 82.06WHQL drivers which are suppose to be enhanced for F.E.A.R.2 and other games.
My next step was to try uninstalling codecs as their support team had suggested for people running into issues with the demo version (which btw worked perfectly for me). There were tons of reponses by the devs and community managers before the release of the game in response to people having issues (these same issues) on the demo. So they released a patch the day before the release of the game and when everyone installed the game the patch automatically installed. So for me and many others that enjoyed a smooth gameplay in the demo our rigs are now not working with the official release.
Since release we have yet to see a response or fix or suggestion from a dev. There have been many others in the community that have helped each other out by posting their solutions. For most updating their codecs using Klite or Ace Mega codec pack has fixed their problem but for a select few of us these solutions have not worked.
Basically I can launch the game successfully in safemode which disables sound. I can also disable the sound card and launch the game successfully although without sound. The codec that has seemed to be effecti've when replaced by others is the Microsoft IMA ADHCP codec. However for me I can disable that codec and get a hardware accelration error but still get a black screen. Re enable it and get black screen with no error. So I do not believe this to be the issue plaguing me. Ultimately it is coming down to a conflict with my sound board and the game.

• Installed Boot Camp drivers for Windows 7, now black screen!

I have a question--I have a late 2009 iMac with the ATI card, followed Apple's procedure for avoiding the black screen while installing Windows 7 on the partitioned HD, and found I could not update to Boot Camp 3.1 without already having Boot Camp 3.0 from the 10.6 install disc. I inserted the disc, had to perform a workaround because it said I couldn't run 64-bit, and installed the drivers (I assume?) from Boot Camp on the 10.6 disc. When my iMac restarted the screen soon goes black. I guessed I was at the login screen, typed in my name and password, and could hear it logging into Windows--my sound works, Magic Mouse works (no scrolling), etc but no screen after booting up in Windows. Did the Boot Camp drivers from the install disc over-write something that was working? How do I fix this so I can proceed to install the 3.1 and 3.2 Boot Camp updates? Just the ATI* trick? Please help!!!

I'm sorry to take up your time guys - as I wrote earlier I'm not that technical and new to all of this - I was promised that I could do everything the mac way in the windows environment if I bought Parallels Desktop 7 - I only did this as my company is installing af new CRM system that is only supported in Windows - now I have installed everything and find out that the MAC keyboard shortcuts and layout is not working at all in i.e. Outlook etc. and I've totally forgotten how the Windows shortcuts etc. is working - Parallels asked me to go to Apple for help and here I am
You write that "if you believe it's correct do it" - but I don't believe anything else than what I'm told - I'm not going to install anything if I don't know how to do and whether it's correct - I wont have the nerve to do that.
If at least could get a list or someting on how to use my Magic Trackpad in the windows environment I would be happy - then I would just have to switch between how to use it on both sides.
Hope you understand and sorry again for taking up your valuable time

• Windows Server 2008 black screen with mouse *PLEASE HELP*

Hello fellow techs,
I have been tearing my hair out for the past 12hrs on this issue.
About 3 weeks ago, one of our clients reported that they were experiencing
issues on the network so one of the staff went into the server room and noticed
the screen was black with only the cursor. As they couldn't reboot, they
decided to hold the power button to power it off. When they powered it back
up, it went passed the windows loading
splash screen, and again the screen is black with
the mouse pointer in the center of the screen.
I am diagnosing the server and find that at the black screen, I’m able to move
the cursor and beyond that nothing happened. I started in safe mode with the
exact same results.
I have been trying many different solutions from posts that I have found in
Google but no change.
From other machines you can type \\servername in
the run box and see the shared folders, as well as ping it.
This is a very urgent request as I need to have the Server back up and running
by tomorrow.
I am quiet willing to pay for phone support with anyone that can assist as soon
as possible. I am happy to transfer founds via Paypal.<o:p></o:p>

• Trying to reformat and reinstall windows but get black screen with cursor

Im trying to reformat my computer after a blue screen error and when i pop in my disk to reformat and install it goes through the first stuff...opening files then it says starting windows and then black screen with cursor..nothing else..i can move the
cursor but i cant click anything..nothing happens.

Hi  Marrik,
Is there any error code or error message displayed in the installation process ? because just based on your description in the post, it is difficult to find the root cause for a black screen even after a clean install, this might be caused by a corrupt installation
media or a hardware issue, so, I give two potential suggestion:
1.Try another Windows installation media and perform a clean install again to  see the result.
2.Go to the computer vendor for hardware support, this also can be caused by a memory or hard disk issue.

do you have such issues elsewhere?

• Black screen while installing 64 bit Windows 7 on early 2010 MBP.

Hi,
I just tried doing a clean install of Windows. After partioning the hardrive my system booted into a black screen. It does not have the blinking cursor like I see on other forums.

Forgot to mention, it is a 13". But I don't think that is relevant to this matter

• Black Screen while installing Windows 7 with BootCamp

Hello all,
I try to install windows 7 by using Boot Camp but when I restart my computer for Win7 Reboot, there is black screen with no activity. I waited maybe 20 minutes but no any process. Even I could not see the Win7 boot animation. Only black screen. Could you help me ?
Thanks in advance

It is good to see that it is indeed a USB2.
The support software on the USB is used in the Pre-boot environment setup and provides drivers for Apple specific hardware, GPU, BT, Mouse, etc. You can verify that by looking at the USB contents. The DVD contains generic drivers when hardware is not recognized as defaults to use. Apple does enough 'secret sauce' to make them different. The following does not explicitly state the USB2 need when using the DVD Installer and mentions W8 (not W7).
From Boot Camp: Creating an ISO image from a Windows installation DVD - Apple Support
Insert a blank USB 2 flash drive that is a least 16GB in size into a USB port on the computer. Boot Camp Assistant uses this drive to store the Windows 8 install media and support drivers during installation of Windows.
Note: This flash drive needs to be formatted for the FAT32 file system and must use the Master Boot Record partitioning scheme. Use Disk Utility to check the format of the flash drive before proceeding, and partition or erase the flash drive if necessary.
I suspect the GPU is not getting the correct driver and the Installer fails. The Generic VGA should work. From the OS X side, can you see files in your BC volume? If yes, can you look for logs in the BC volume at the following locations.
./Windows/Inf/setupapi.dev.log
./Windows/Inf/setupapi.offline.log

• Windows xp install -- black screen with no cursor

I've seen a number of posts about Boot Camp installation problems involving a black screen with a blinking cursor, but my problem is simply with a black screen. On my MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo (graphics card: ATY,RadeonX1600) I'm able to partition the HD, but then after I'm prompted in Boot Camp to insert the Windows XP install disk, the computer attempts to restart and install, but after a flash of grey screen, the screen goes totally black, and eventually the optical drive powers down (after whirring for a while) -- no cursor, no nothing. I've tried a number of suggestions I've seen elsewhere: my firmware seems up-to-date (at least that's what I'm told when I try to run both EFI and SMC firmware updates); the Windows XP is a brand-new, single-disk, SP2 install disk; I've tried holding down the option key upon reboot and selecting windows start-up. I've used Parallels with no problem under 10.4.X, but recently upgraded to 10.5.2, and thought I'd try a Boot Camp installation for better access to peripherals. Any suggestions?

Hello to all and it wanted to request aid to them on this subject, days ago I acquired a Imac 24"2.4GHZ Aluminum (generation previous to the last ones sent for a month),then it is that I have years with my macbook pro and always I have used bootcamp since was beta in Tiger, so installation experience I believe that I have a little.
The problem is that in it is new machine I have partition my disc with the assistant without no problem, but when it is going to install Windows XP or Vista (the 2 I have them original) and boot the machine, it remains in gray screen and no nothing happens, reason why boot with option pressed and they leave systems both to me, followed this I select Windows and it is hoisted in the screen that nor the leader of the mouse moves.
I have made the procedure as 10 times and proven with different sizes from partition (with its respective disc repair with the DVD of Leopard and the disc assistant) and nothing.
Finally uses WinClone in my macbook pro and clone my partition of Vista Windows, recovers it in the Imac without no problem and it appears to me in startup but the same, I select Windows and there it remains. Fiirmware of the updated machine this and I am in OSX 10.5.3. I have proven everything until changes to the memories and nothing. Them request if somebody has had east problem and to most erudite of the forum I request aid to them to see if they can give me.

• Windows 8.1 black screen with mouse cursor after login (HP 2730P)

I live in Canada and first just to confirm that Windows 8 with all Microsoft patches was running ok on my HP EliteBook 2730P NoteBook PC. Originally I had Windows XP running in it. With Win 8, I just lost few unique HP
applications.
But last night, just after my upgrade to Windows 8.1, I had the blank screen problem after the login, as you already described. I went to HP and Intel web sites for some help and fixes but nothing really helpful. According
to what I red, it's always someone else responsability but not their's or the easy way to get out of it, not supported on Windows 8 and above. But as my (not so old)   HP 2730P is a NoteBook PC that I am used to work with, I
did a lot of researches to make it work fine with Win 8 and now with 8.1 .
So, after many hours on Internet I finally corrected my problem the same way as ghoust1101 showed previously; with the Info and instructions on youtube.com/watch?v=Rgje-t0OLdI
After the sfc /scannow , I got a message saying that many errors and corrupted files were fixed, plus as showed, I deleted "c:\Windows Activation Technologies", which corrected my problem. Done a reboot and everything was fine after
showing me the correct Windows 8.1 screen and the rest is to get familiar with it.
     Hope this could help...

Hi,
Actually, I'm not sure what your exactlly problem it is, what's you meaning of Black Screen? All the screen black or just background? While Glad to see your problem resolved, Hope your experience is helpful with others.

• Windows 7 shows black screen after running in bootcamp, iMac early 2008

Help! I installed Windows 7 on my early iMac 2008 using Bootcamp, with all the proper updates etc.
Now it shows a black screen (hard drive still running) after 10 or so minutes of running applications such as Firefox, Mail. Does not seem to happen when there is no activity - screensaver can run for over an hour with no black screen.
All i can do is emergency reboot, only for it to happen again.
Any ideas?

That happened to me and I had to the my Mac to the Apple Store. It took the tech more than two hours to do the install using a thumb drive (which I had to buy) to download the workaround. I don't have the details, but he found the workaround online by searching Bootcamp and black screen. If you have access to an Apple Store and Genius Bar try that.
