Windows 8.1? DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT

So!
Since getting my S440 laptop back in Septe, mber, I've been holding off the 8.1 upgrade. Until this weekend...
WHAT A MISTAKE!!!!
Some issues:
1) Laptop would not perform a standard re-start
2) On boot-up a pop-up would display saying Catalyst has crashed
3) Unable to install a newer version of VirtualBox (previous ones instaled fine under Windows 8
4) The IWD Bus Enumerator was reported as an error
(Some knowledge article advises to delete the "duplicate")  - Really??? Do I have to?
Its taken me another day and a half to back-up key files, restore back to factory settings and re-install my apps.
Its been such a waste of time, It does make me wonder why in 2014 we can't get a simplified PC laptop. Instead we have microsoft, Lenovo, AMD, Intel etc etc each with their own little component and drivers and everything thta goes with it...
Its no wonder why people STILL get frustrated with PCs and the PC industry still shows itself up as a "techie" industry..
There seems to be very little interest in true co-operation between the parties and the focus is all about on shifting units and slam the next iteration out of the door...
People should not need to uninstall drivers first before running an upgrade, or delete system settings from Device Manage because somehow the upgrade caused a duplicate entry.... . Its madness...!!!!
Why can't Lemovo push down a small app to check the compatibility of its own equipment though the Lenovo Solution Centre or whatever its called. Or have a package that will clean up any rubbish / buggy Windows 8.1 upgrades that Microsoft can't be bothered to fix?
To anyone reading this and thinking to upgrade to Windows 8.1 on a Lenovo laptop - then save yourself some time and sanity and don't bother... (there might be other vendors in the same boat).
Until the above mentioned groups get their act together and provide a seamless, consistent way to upgrade then PCs will always be seen as the cross that we must be burdened with..  Its funny but had Lenovo themselves got an S440 off the shelf, ran all the updates possible and try and upgrade to 8.1 they'd see the problems for themselves.
What a shame.... Such a well built and very good product, let down by the software and drivers and companies that operate in their own silos....  It does make a strong argument for the likes of walled-garden systems.
Mark.....

It's frustration....
As I mentioned the S440 is a very very good laptop and meets all my requirements for a small business laptop.
It just seems to me that an upgrade is still a hit-or-miss affair.
Years ago I'd have the time and patience to diagnose each error and search the boards and try things out, but
whether its old age, I just want things to work...
I don't think it's being unreasonable... But four major issues? - I was very surprised. Perhaps my "setup" was one of the unlucky ones.... It does beg the question the purpose / benefit of the Solution Centre. ?

  • ICE and JQuery Effects -- Don't even think about it

    Hey All--
ICE would appear to be a great, simple solution except for one major flaw: clients for small marketing sites often want basic slideshow functionality (a la Jquery Cycle or Lightbox). These scripts hide elements on a page, and hence there is no way to edit the hidden page content with ICE.
So that means that ICE is not useable for image-heavy websites that use .js slideshows like photography sites, art portfolios, real estate sites, small product catalogs etc.

Wow, I see an Adobe employee commenting on this issue so this may actualy get read by Adobe.
Guys... is it not obvious that you positively must be able to support AJAX type technology? Is it not abundantly clear that the inablility to edit ALL content on a page regardless of it's visiblity status is a deal breaking failure of InContext?
Tabs, accordians, etx. This is the 21st Century guys. I use this stuff on about every site I build. If you can't support it you're toast. And you can't.
When I click through tabs in edit mode (which I CAN do actually) it works fine except that your editor seems not to understand that the screen needs to be refreshed. For example, I have a tabs widget. In each tab is a table with editable TDs. I am able to click through tabs and edit the content.
The problem is this - when  the table displays it shows the borders of the editable regions. When I click to the next tab it displays the table in that tab and shows the borders of the editable regions. But it still displays the borders from the prior tab. So you end up with content that is masked by a mess of borders from previous tabs. Ultimately it becomes unusable.
To say you don't support such effects is simply to say that InContext is unusable for all but the most basic, stupid web page.
And you think people are going to pay for this?
Sorry to rant but you're Adobe. I expect more. The company that created Photoshop can do better.

  • Aperture 3 and Mobile User Accounts: Don't even think about it

    Hi all.
This is more a warning to other with a similar setup than anything else.
I use both a desktop mac and a portable.
As so, and since I have a Mac Mini Server, my user is what Apple calls a "Mobile User".
Basically what it does is this: it allows me to have my user on both macs always in sync.
To be certain that no file would be locked out by an open app, I have it to sync on login and logout only.
Strangely enough Apple own Aperture 3 doesn't sync.
It simply shows a generic error and that's it.
I call tell that I've made some extensive tests regarding the syncing process and no matter what it never works.
It doesn't matter if Aperture is closed, if the syncing is made on the login or the logout... nothing!
As a curiosity, not directly related with this specific problem, I can also confirm that the full library package is seen as a single file to the sync agent, so even a simple open and close of the app is enough to make it try to re-sync the entire thing, instead of doing the proper thing and copy only the modified files inside of it.
That means that even without this error it would be inpratical to work with Aperture 3 since that would mean having a nice library of quite a few gigabytes syncing every time that I tried to log out of my user session.
I sure hope that Apple can find a way to make their own pro photo app and their server software work together.
But until there... it's back iPhoto for me.
    Take care all.
    Pedro Fardilha

I don't have problems syncing other files that are also system packages, like iPhoto ones... although I have a terrible suspicion that again the sync agent only sees a single file, not a bundle.
I assume that the OS doesn't have any problem with packages since they are used pretty much elsewhere and they are basically a folder with a specific file inside that "forces" the OS to show us as a single file, instead of letting us see directly the content.
Even the new disk image format that Apple recommends to be used in order to speed up Time Machine backups (.sparcebundle) is based in package (or bundles, whatever you prefer to call them)
The main issue here might be the folder structure inside.
If you do a "show package content" and, for instance, check the thumbnails folder, I can easily see some chars that might create some confusion if not properly escaped during the sync, like on this example:
    My Aperture.aplibrary/Thumbnails/%pARYo%fT52I77jmdf8mqQ/AP.Thumbnails
(Those "%" are so prone to errors if not properly handled)
Time Machine doesn't have any problem with both packages and those chars, so I truly hope that they use TM tech and improve the way that the syncing agent work.
Anyways, Aperture seemed a nice app.
I'm really sad that I can't use it because of this... specially when I'm considering getting a new digital camera.
I understand that it was recently released so let's hope that Apple can figure out what's happening and release an update (to either Aperture or Mac OS X Server) in the next few months.
    Take care.

  • I regret even thinking about signing on for another 2 years with verizon

I have been very stable in my relations with my cell phone providers; however, Verizon has proven to be a big let-down.  I started my cell phone usage years ago with Cellular One who I had no issues with concerning plan provisions or bills.  Altell bought out Cellular One and I had probably a handful of problems.  Now that Verizon has bought out my Altell, I have had to call EVERY SINGLE MONTH for some screwed up something.  Yes, I had a lot of problems that the solution always seemed to be "to upgrade to a Verizon phone and plan."  And apparently I enrolled in the "surprise plan" from Verizon because every time I get a bill "SURPRISE!" I have been duped on one thing and charged outlandishly for it.  I had a gentleman from a local provider talk me into recontracting with Verizon to upgrade my phone and he ensured he would personally see to it that I was taken care of and the problems as before would not burden me any longer.  Seems, however, that even he can't fix it all.  Some of the issues are so deep-seeded in the company's greed for a monopoly, that they are untouchable by the employees that actually care about their customers' satisfaction.  I have been billed time and time again for services that I never used and billed extensively for services that were free thru Altell (Verizon omits these differences in their sales spill).  I am aware that this message will probably not get posted, so for those who do read this, think strongly about making things right by the customers that otherwise would be loyal and sing your praises.  I am the type of person who likes to post positive reinforcements about products and services and it breaks my heart that I have nothing positive to say about this company.

I had a similar experience with Suncom (later bought by AT&T).  I was about to start school in Blacksburg, VA.  The salesman asked me what the nearest city was and I told him Roanoke.  He looked at his list and said yes, they have coverage in Roanoke, so I didn't have to worry about roaming - I would always be on the network.
Well, Blacksburg is 20 minutes from Roanoke and, of course, they did not have coverage in Blacksburg.  By the time I found out, it was past the 30 days (and I'm not sure I even knew about the 30 days at the time anyway.)  So I wound up having to pay $10 or $20 extra per month for a pool of 200 roaming minutes until they got coverage in Blacksburg about six months later.  They further antagonized me when, even though I had it setup for them to bill my credit card automatically, they would send me late notices.  It was ridiculous - they could bill my credit card whenever they wanted to so if it was late, it how in the world was it my fault?
After a year of putting up with it and getting angry every time I talked with one of their support people, I switched to nTelos.  They were dirt cheap, but their signal quality was horrendous.  When out in the middle of nowhere, I was often having to borrow a phone from someone with Verizon.
Finally, I bought a Droid and switched to Verizon and between Verizon wireless and FIOS for my house, I'm paying less than I was all together with my old cable provider + nTelos, so I'm very happy with Verizon.

Fifteen or more years ago, when I went to get my family's first  small cell phones (I had a bag phone prior-whadda convenient thing to own!! ) I picked up two clamshell phones on the ATT network.  This was back in the days or mucho roaming.
The salesman assured me that ATT's coverage in our area was perfect. He also told me that there was a 50-mile radius around my home address in which there would be no roaming charges.
Well, needless to say, the coverage was awful. Once, my wife was in her car with our daughter. I was in my car about 2 miles away when her car broke down. She couldn't call me. No signal.
So, I called within the 30 days to cancel the contract, as was allowed. The ATT CS rep took down my information, made some token offer to keep my service, then told me how much I owed. There were over $100 in roaming charges. I had never been more than 10 miles from my home address since I'd gotten the phone.
I told her that there should be no roaming charges, I was within the 50 mile radius no-roaming area. She told me that there was no such provision. I complained that I couldn't get a signal almost everywhere I went with the phone. She informed me that ATT had no cell towers in my area, so I shouldn't expect a signal. I asked her why they sold service in an area where they had none, and told her that the salesman had assured me that ATT coverage saturated my area and that there was no roaming within 50-miles of my home.
She informed me that ATT wasn't responsible for what their salesforce said. I informed her I wasn't responsible for the roaming charges, and I wasnt paying a penny of it, so she might as well send me to collections right now. After another 40 minutes of arguing on the phone, she erased the charges. I returned the phones, got two from Verizon and have been with them ever since. (Probably going to be with Sprint come Feb. 2011)
Dishonest behavior isn't limited to one carrier. All have unscrupulous people, and good people, too.

  • Why is every website acting like I am a monster, claiming it doesn't recognize me as Firefox on Windows. I don't even recognize me that way!

Nothing's right. I can't visit my regular spots without a popup window asking me if I approve HTML scripting. Usual hangouts like AOL don't recognize my computer, and in my mind, that's a seriously egregiously presumptuously pervasive invasion for Mozilla to make in an update, What has it done and how the hell do I undo it?

Try using Firefox's Safe Mode for the next few sessions, as that will disable extensions.
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Note: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox closes, a small dialog should appear: click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
Now, hopefully you will have better luck downloading the clean-up tools.
Also, when viewing the Uninstall a Program control panel, click the "Installed on" column heading to group items by install date. Hopefully that will help you spot the culprits more easily.

  • Thinking about selling Iphone 5 for new WIndows Phone

So I am a new Iphone 5 user. Went from a Motorola Droid to an Apple product. I must say I like the Iphone 5, but I like the new windows phone. I have even thought about selling my Iphone 5 to get the Windows phone. ANyone have any thoughts about the windows phones compared the the Iphone 5?

As a past user of an iPhone 4 and a Windows Phone 7.5 device, I would say that the user experiences are similar, with the exception of far fewer apps being available for Windows Phone.  However, there are several apps available and I could find a livable level of satisfaction with the app selection.  There are fewer accessories available for any Windows Phone device (or any other phone, for that matter) than for the iPhone.  One thing that I think that has changed for Windows Phone 8 is that users will no longer sync through Zune on the PC.  I'm not up-to-speed with this part, so if this is important to you, you might want to research this further.
The other thing that may impact your user experience would be how integrated into Apple's ecosystem you are.  Even though you said that you just got the iPhone 5, I don't know if you are an iPad or iPod user that relied on iTunes for content management.  Your other ecosystem concerns would include whether or not you use iCloud for media storage and whether or not your friends send you text messages in iMessage.  If none of these things are big deals for you, then a switch to a different mobile OS may be fine.
Your other differences are your hardware differences.  You didn't name a specific Windows Phone device, but I think that every Windows Phone that is coming out is larger than an iPhone 5.  Were you attracted to the thin and light profile of the iPhone 5, or did you think that the screen was too small?  The cameras on the iPhone 5 and the upcoming Windows Phone devices are said to rival each other, so that probably won't be a major consideration for you.
There are many other things to consider, but hopefully my questions will remind you of what you consider to be important, and you can go from there.  I always recommend hands-on time with a new device that you are considering, so go to stores to try out Windows Phone devices to get more of a feel for them.

  • Thinking about switching to Windows

This is not meant to be a Os X vs Windows thread. I dont think one platform is better than the other, but they have different strengths and weaknesses. What I want to hear is what kind of pitfalls I can expect in regards to live video performance if I go down the Windows way.
    Reason I`m asking is:
My Macbook Pro recently died, so I borrowed my friends HP Laptop with similiar specs. He has used it alot for music production, sound of movies etc, and quite a decent graphics card (6xxxm 1gb ati radeon) I wanted to connect a Matrox Dualhead2go to two 1280 x 800 projectors using Resolume. However, I encountered nothing but problems all the way. Couldnt dual monitor resolutions, display went black, drivers stopped working, program had to restart. When it worked, it worked well, but I think I aged 10 years during that gig.
Before that I wanted to buy a stationary shuttle PC, top of the line, 7970 radeon 3gb, Ivy bridge, Dell Touch Screen etc, but now I got a little scared of doing the switch.Having used Macbook Pro`s ever since I started VJìng, I`m very much used to plug and play using Triplehead2go, it just works. I usually use crossplatform software (resolume, after effects) but I also use motion and modul8 from time to time. I can live without however. The simplest choice is to buy a Macbook Pro, I know it, it works. But I like the idea of multiple choices in hardware, the ability to make a semi transportable shuttle and to be able to connect 6 projectors using eyefinity as some promoters have asked me to do bigger shows. Portability is important, but since I drag around 3 + projectors, the extra 10kg`s is not so important.
So to all Windows VJ`s out there (or people with experience from both platforms) what kind of headaches can I expect if I make the switch? I`m a quite tech savvy guy (learn fast) even though I dont have much experience with the windows platform.
    1. Do you experience driver issues and troubles related to that?
    2. I`m not dependant of Syphon, but I would love to see a Windows version eventually. Do you think that is likely to happen during the next couple of years?
    3. Blue Screen of death or other strange issues?
    4. I have always wanted to get into Quartz Composer to create patches and effects for Resolume, but is there a equavilent Windows version?
    5. I`ve always been drooling over this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxvQw0GVH2c, which is one reason I always wanted a PC.
    6. Slower performance over time using Windows? Or is that a thing of the past?
    7. Is the Os X video engine better than the one Windows is using?
    8. Any video software for windows that currently doesnt work in os x?
    9. Can you predict the future? is Apple leaving the pro market? Is Windows on a comeback?
Hope this post is clear enough. I`m asking what I`m likely to miss out on, what I can expect, what headaches and what new possibilities comes with changing from Mac Os X to Windows. As my computer broke, now is the time for change, if ever. Hope to get some constructive replies guys!

Good luck, but I doubt that you will. This is a Mac user forum; your questions are about Windows and would be better suited to a Windows forum.
As for Q9, the moderators have a habit of removing posts that speculate about Apple's future direction.

  • When prompted to update to 8.0.1 - and I hit install - window just thinks about it and never installs update????

Trying to update to 8.0.1 - when the update window pops up to install I hit "install" as I want the update of course. However, once I hit the install button it can be all day and it sill isn't done installing the update, it just thinks about it...... Make sense? What can I do to get this updated and done? Shouldn't be this tough right?

    Hi ammikolasy-
I'm sorry you had trouble upgrading. There can be a number of different reasons why that happened. I found an article that outlines how to correct the problem:

  • If your thinking about getting bt broadband Don't ...

Its now 5 weeks , since we got connected, and I use that word very loosely, I have spent about 8 hrs on the phone to India
going through the same tests , over Andover again, tried to get out of the contract, they say it will cost me 257 pounds  to get out of a contract , that has never been fit for purpose , they say they will call back ,  nothing...  When they do  gess what , lets do the same  checks and tests again ,  I'm beside my self !!!
I finally have an engineer coming to the house on Thursday ,  after almost loosing it  with the gentleman from India, ,so if you value your health do not sign up with bt broadband . ill let u all know what happens after thursday.

Telling everyone not to use BT just because you have a problem is a bit unfair don't you think? 1000's of people sign up without any problems including myself.
There are two options here, either there is a fault or problem on your side of the master socket in which case it is in no way the fault of BT.  Or they are not supplying a BB signal to your master socket which is their fault.
If the second option is true then there is no way they could demand you to pay £257 to get out of the contract since they have not supplied their side of the contract!
Does your router/hub actually sync with the exchange? Have you checked in the router settings to see what is going on?
If the DSL light is showing on your router it must surely be a problem with your system.
You must make sure the fault or problem is not on your side of the master socket or they will charge you for a callout for sure.

Contact Apple support at 800MYAPPLE and ask them to assist you with resetting your security quesitons.
They will ask you to verify your identity. Not usually a big issue. Call them ask for assistance.
They can walk you through getting the security question issues resolved.

2.4ghz is plenty of processing, if it means you'll save money over the 2.7ghz. I'd have suggested 2.7 if you also do heavy video editing/rendering using FCP, etc... but the spec you have is plenty

  • Thinking about getting a new iMac to use as the main computer.  Has anyone done this?  What is your experience and recommendations?

We have a 2009 MBP, 2010 MBP, 2011 MBA, an IPAD 2, and several ipods.  Currently, my 2009 MBP is the main computer, holding all the music and pictures.  This has used up the majority of the available storage and definitely slows it down some.  I do back up the full computer to a backup drive and also remove the large movie files to another external drive.  I'm thinking about getting a new iMac to use as the main computer.  Has anyone done this?  What is your experience and recommendations?
I look forward to all responses.
    Thanks,

Thanks for your response.  I look forward to hopefully learning something new here.
A good share of my music was added via my CDs, but now everything is added via itunes and occasionally amazon.  Almost all my pictures and video are added through my cameras via iphoto although I have added some with the 'add image to iphoto library' function also.

  • Thinking about giving up...

I have many years of experience doing UNIX/Linux (and way back Mac) admin work but Leopard Server has me wanting to quit altogether. It started, as these types of things often do, with the seductive promise of an all in one server with georgous black glossy blurbs.
Our small company was thinking about Exchange and the whole windows server setup, but after pricing the CALs and the machines it was put on hold. I decided to risk buying a mac mini and 10-user Leopard Server with my own $ since the boss didn't think it would work. I was excited to have an integrated package rather than building individual open source services, after 3 weeks I am no longer excited.
    Here is what I wanted:
    * OD Master acting as PDC for windows users. (No Legacy 10.4 stuff and no AD stuff - should be easy)
    * Self Signed Certs (They are for internal servers for crying out loud, why do I have to pay for internal only server certs)
    * DNS (didn't want it but you need the d*mn reverse entries for anything to work)
[the reverse zone editor doesn't work correctly, it had "example.com" still stuck in the arpa zone file, but it did not show up in the zone editor tab - this happened twice and is due it seems to the auto reverse zone creation functionality of the GUI editor]
    * iCal
    * Mail Services
    * Wiki/Blogs
    * SMB shares
    * Have some system stuff running off an external RAID-1 firewire drive rather than the internal drive.
(I gave up on this after foolishly trying to use the "choose" buttons on some of the services thinking that I could just point (say mail or web or iCal) to a non-standard folder and it would do the permission and ownership tweaks necessary to make the chosen folders actually work for said services - ha!
Well, after 5 re-installs I read in the discussions here that iCal doesn't work with Kerberos
OD doesn't work with self signed certs, nor does the rest of the system seem to either - I saw the discussion where some people got it working. The thing that gets me is you have a certificate assistant GUI and cert management "tab" on the Server Admin yet neither of them can do what needs to be done to make a self signed cert work with the Leopard Server components. Why bother having those tools? Torture is the only reason I can think of.
When I turn off SSL and set everything to cleartext auth it seems to almost kinda work...
Sorry for the rant, there is more but it is another 7:45 AM morning at the end of a reinstall night.
Does anyone know how to get iCal and/or wikis working with Kerberos?
Does anyone know why the system arbitrarily picks an IP address to associate with the main "bolded" entry in the ServerAdmin->Settings->Network tab? I wanted my ns and mx to be on a separate IPs from the rest of the services but the server decided that the mx IP would be the "bold" IP not the one that is associated with the main network interface so now all my kerberos principals read [email protected], not [email protected].

First, be aware that you probably do not have unlimited data on your phone.  In addition, using your phone as a data modem for your computer requires a seperate data account.
As far as using the coffe shop's open wi-fi...are you completely unaware of the security implications of using it?  It is an open hot spot, and you are prone to spoofing, man-in-the middle, DOS and other attacks.
If I were you, I would bundle comcast cable and internet...go for the highest speed package you can afford, and make sure that you are indeed getting unlimited data.  When at home, you can use both yrou phone and your computer on your wireless network.
Your smartphone, even with a dock, will never replace a computer.  You need more storage than is available on your phone.
