Windows and RAC block corruption
Hi,
we're using rac / windows / 9204 with a san and ocfs and we're getting loads of block corruptions (ora-1578).
We're using dbms_repair to isolate the problems and read 'past' the data, but this is obviously not ideal since we loose data.
Besides proprietary SAN disk checking programs, dbms_repair,analyze and dbverify - are there any other mechanisms one could use to check disk integrity?
Regards
Ottar.

We had a SAN outage recently. The DB is back online. We want to check for block corruption to be on the safe side. We are planning to take a SAN EMC BCV copy of prod to run this. Looking for opinioms on the best way.Production is up and running. This is just a sanity check.
We are NOT using RMAN for backups. We do a BCV copy and then back that up and archive logs to tape.
RMAN: Can we do this from the control files? Do we have to set anything up? Is this the best way?
DBMS_REPAIR: I have not used this. We don't even have the package installed. I can install it.
DB_VERIFY: not sure if this is a good option or not. Is this current? I know I'll have to do it file by file and grep the logs. I have used this in the past, but its been a while.

Block corruption detection in RMAN.
Hi,
I'd be be grateful if anyone could confirm or clarify the behaviour of the RMAN backup command with regard to detecting corrupt blocks in the datafiles.
The environment is as follows:
10.2.0.5.1
Solaris 10
2 node RAC
Block Change Tracking file is not used.
DB_BLOCK_CHECKING=OFF
DB_BLOCK_CHECKSUM=OFF
Does the BACKUP DATABASE command check both physical and logical block corruptions when run either as a full backup or incremental?
I'm trying to establish wether running a BACKUP _VALIDATE [CHECK LOGICAL]_* DATABASE on a nightly basis provides any value if the same checks are being performed by the standard backup commands that are already scheduled every night?
Any input appreciated.
ThanksHi,
By default, RMAN just check for physical corruption, either in full or incremental backups. To check logical corruption you have to use the command "backup check logical;".
About the parameter DB_BLOCK_CHECKSUM, its default is TRUE and Oracle Corporation advises leaving this parameter on default, so that any damage caused while the block is on disk, or corruptions introduced during the write and read process, will be detected.
Hope it help.

My PC's OS is 'MS Windows Vista Home Premium'. As my initil question states: When downloading, after the download completes, I can not see, run, nor access the file in it's designated folder. The download only appears in the "Downloads" window and the only "Right Click" options permitted are to "Remove From List", "Select All", & "Copy Download Link" I also can not double click to run it. What's blocking it?
I have a similar problem when accessing .zip files that are attachments to my emails. Here, however, I can place the file in a designated folder, however, the .zip file and it's compressed content files are file-typed as "FireFox Document" and I get permissions errors when running an unzip tool.
Why are my download files being quarantined ??? Is there a security setting option I need to change???
To get around this, I'm using IE to download and install these files, but switching back & forth between FireFox & IE is a real pain. It's your anti-virus not working correctly while scanning. You can turn off the option to scan in Firefox's '''about:config''' by filtering for '''browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone''' and double-clicking that line to change the value to '''false'''

System datafile block corruption - no backups and database in NOARCHIVELOG mode
Dear All,
Database version - oracle 11.1 Enterprise
OS - RHELinux 5.8
What are the options of recovering from physical block corruption when there are no backup available to perform block media recovery?
V$DATABASE_BLOCK_CORRUPTION reports two segments corrupted (please see attached image for details).
1 table in system datafile - sys_fba_barrierscn
1 index - (applicaiton index)
What are my options?
I know there is a possibility that the database will not restart after a shutdown due to corruption in system tablespace.
Database is in noarchivelog mode. So online backups are not possible and there aren't any full backups either.
I am thinking of below,
1. Run dbms_repair with fix_block_corruption. - Still database startup might fail?
2. Shutdown the database and take offline full backup with RMAN MAXCorrupt option.
Appreciate your suggestions and advises.
Thanks
StefanThanks Sybrand,
Agree with your first two suggestions .
Also scheduled a expdp job tonight. (Only backup like thing they had was a expdp cron, but until today all the large tables were failing due to small undo_retention).
Yes. Flashback is not used. So hopefully it will not affect the a database restart i guess?
Related to dbms_repair, I was referring to - http://askdba.org/weblog/2010/08/physical-corruption-ora-1578-part-3/.
Where DBMS_REPAIR.FIX_CORRUPT_BLOCKS and DBMS_REPAIR.SKIP_CORRUPT_BLOCKS used.
Which i think will not use any redo.
Thanks

Immediate help can be only provided by Oracle Support Services. So if you need that, please raise a Sev1 SR . For your issue, as others have suggested already, if you have a valid backup and you are in the archive log mode, using RMAN's BMR(Block Media Recovery) , the issue can be resolved provided there is nothing wrong with the hardware of yours. If that's the case, recovery wouldn't yield any benefits.

Block corruption problem in alert and rman/dbv no show errors
Hello, I'm new in Oracle's world. I have one problem with Oracle 10.2.0.4 (RHEL 5.6) x64. Archive redo-log enable
In the alert.log, three days ago show (the server have kernel panic & rebooted):
Mon Sep 24 18:18:17 2012

SEGMENT OWNER = SCHEMA1, SEGMENT TYPE = Index Segment
Yesterday, we detected this error because SQL don't execute.
The error repeat 47times and there is 6 different file-block combination (4 index of schemas, 1 of sys and ¡2 tables!)
First, I launched expdp and exp of the one problematic schema. The export was fine, no errors while exporting, but in the alert.log show one block corruption. Should exp and expd show error and stop?
Next, I used dbv and verify all dbfs. Only show 2 blocks error in two datafiles (indexes).
Next, I used RMAN:
A) check database: no error.
B) validate database: error in two blocks (logical error) and different from the 6 in alert.log. This two blocks are indexes.
I re-create this two indexes. When i re-create, the block error disappear (not inmediate, suppose that disappear when block was rewrite). Now dbv and rman show no error.
I have read one note about types of error, other about procedures if db is in archivelog/noarchivelog. Also if object is index or table. But I find anything about auto-repair corrupt blocks in Oracle or why now the 6 block error are solved. I don't know if two tables with two block corrupt lost rows or not.
Appreciate any help.
RegardsHello Fran. Result of query before rebuild problematic INDEXES:
SQL> select * from V$database_block_corruption;
FILE# BLOCK# BLOCKS CORRUPTION_CHANGE# CORRUPTIO
3 98857 1 390928740 LOGICAL
9 48632 1 390325900 LOGICAL
When I ran RMAN first time to check blocks, it filled V$database_block_corruption with two bad blocks. Different from the 6 errors from alert.:
RMAN> backup validate check logical database;
Error backing up file 9, block 48632: logical corruption
Error backing up file 3, block 98857: logical corruption
I extracted index name from each block and I re-created it. Also, I created a temporary table in tablespace's datafile to fill blocks empty. Problem solved. Rman / dbv show no error.
I'm searching for similar experiences and found: Re: Data in bad block
First 6 bad checksum errors in alert.log disappear with any visible problem?
Can I sure that DB is fine if RMAN and DBV show no errors?
Thank you very much

Is X-windows and GUI desktops supported on the ODA "engineered system" running a RAC database? If it is, what is the yum command needed to install the X-windows, Gnome, and KDE package groups?
While I agree with the direction of the suggestions with installing packages for X-windows, we do not have a blanket 'apply any package' recommendation.
In particular we do not support altering the kernel (although we do have exceptions which we review on a case by case basis).
Basically, if the you want to alter functionality that would not impact core functionality you are usually fine.
A good guideling is : The more dependencies that there are between the package / rpm you are considering using the higher the potential impact on functionality - meaning higher chance for problems
Note: We do use VNC including Real and Tiger regularly , but we have no hard recommendation on how you may want to use X-windows. I have never seen a limitation other than comments on bugs
or incompatibility within the X-window product itself with certain kernel levels.
Patching may overwrite some packages that you may install, however, _depending on packages/rpms added_ there is also the possibility that you will break existing functionality to the point
that patching itself will fail ( we have already seen a few cases of this in which case the proper mitigation is to remove / roll-back any alterations to the ODA before patching, and then adding the packages/rpms
back after the patching is completed.
From what you are discussing the impact should be low without conflicts, but please consider the above, and if you have specific packages which you consider potential problems
please create an SR so that we can review packages / rpms on an individual basis.
Once again: the main criteria for not supporting rpms is regarding the kernel itself

Having corrected my corrupt catalog (PSE 11) I now have thousands of duplicate images. Is there any way of of removing the extra copies? I've had suggestions that apply to Windows, and iPhoto but can't find any advice for Photoshop Elements on Mac Maverick
You used the data. Verizon can not see what it was sued for. However your phone can see whats apps used the data. go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle. line the dates up with your cycle. then there will be a bar graph below that extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right. after those are extended below that will be a list of apps, there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

Boot camp crashes windows and corrupts personal data
When I try to use bootcamp to restart in OSX it normally crashes Windows and corrupts all the application settings - very annoying. Is there any other way to get it to restart in OSX without the data loss?
In another thread I created that is similar to this thread in that I wanted to find out how I can reclaim my missing 32GB after the first crash (the answer is run Disk Utilities from the Leopard instal DVD), a gentleman suggested that I do not have 32GB of contiguous space on the drive - the physical space on the drive by sector.
This makes total sense. Now I just have to figure out how to do an image of my system drive, reformat the drive, and restore that image to the drive. This makes me a bit nervous and I am not entirely sure on the step-by-step procedure as to how this is done.
Perhaps someone can offer a step-by-step guide? -
IMovie corrupt edit windows and more
A strange thing has happened:
I have been working on a massive project, a friend‘s wedding; it’s taken two months to edit and I’m nearly finished.
But yesterday, while I was adding some final edits the program seemed to hang. I quit out, and now when I try to go back the main edit window doesn’t appear, it’s just empty.
The clips appear in the bottom window, and the preview window is fine, but the window where you assemble the clips is empty.
I have a feeling that a clip has got corrupt and is preventing the program from opening properly; but because I can’t get into the edit window I can’t try and take out the offending clip.
I’ve tried reinstalling iMovie and trashing the prefs file, but it still does the same thing.
I hope I’ve made it clear what the problem is - can anyone help. My only option at the moment is to reedit the whole wedding again; and I promised the couple it’d be ready by the weekend!
Help!!Yes.
You can leave the first song where it is.
For the second song, highlight it and delete it. Then go back to the music browser again and drag your second song to your project. But this time, drag it to a clip near the end of your first song.
Now, you should have a green audio track running beneath your video clips, and you can adjust the start, end, or where it attaches.
