Windows doesn't repaint properly

I had my computer reformatted recently by a small local PC repair shop. The owner also re-installed windows 7 - he used his own disk. I find now that there is a repaint problem. If I start Outlook, and view some emails, and then close
Outlook, It looks like Outlook is still there. The desktop does not repaint over it.
The computer is also slower than it should be.
I did a virus scan (I have Norton 360) and I even downloaded a boot disk of Windows-Defender and scanned with that. I right-clicked on my C: drive and did a file system check (though I did not check for bad sectors).
More than half of my hard-drive is free space.
Its possible that I downloaded a virus anyway, and the virus somehow bypasses all these checks. Or its possible that the owner of the local store was not honest. But is there any other possibilities, and what should I do next?

Note that there should only be a prefs.js file (Windows hides the .js file extension) and not a numbered prefs-##.js file.<br />
The presence of a numbered file indicates there there has been a problem with creating/updating prefs.js at some time and you can remove the numbered prefs-1.js file.<br />
If the main prefs.js doesn't have a current time stamp then you will have to delete that file as well and redo all customization settings in Options.
Make sure that you do not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode.

Externally loaded swf in second window doesn't display properly?

I have a bitmap based flash game (bitmapdata generated screen) that I'm trying to load in to a secondary nativewindow generated from a main flash (not AJAX/HTML) based AIR app that's a graphical menu. I.E. you click on a selection in the menu, and it pops open a secondary nativewindow with the flash game running in it. The problem is, the game itself gets mangled in the secondary window when it loads in. Keyboard input goes away, the bitmap doesn't draw properly (it streaks like its not drawing the background image each frame), most of the game objects its supposed to draw in to the bitmap are missing, etc.
When I make the game itself in to its own AIR app and run it direct, it works just fine. So I'm puzzled. Is there some kind of special coding considerations in the as3 side that I'm missing with the original game? I.E. if a flash based AIR app launches another nativewindow and loads a swf in to that, does it share some kind of variable set, display list, etc. with the calling window? Something else? Any help would be appreciated.

There are a few differences between (A.) letting the AIR runtime load content into the initial window and (B.) loading content into a new NativeWindow.
1. In case A, the stage property is available in the class constructor for the main sprite. In case B, this is not the case. You may have to use an ADDED_TO_STAGE event handler to do some class initialization.
2. In case A, the initial scale is based on the metadata present in the SWF -- this results in the behavior you would expect. In case B, there is no SWF to base the scale on when the window is created, so a default scale is used -- this is rarely results in behavior you would expect (unless the window happens to be created with a size of 72x72 pixels).
If you aren't setting the stage to noScale, then this could account for some of the visual issues. (See http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/flex/quickstart/launching_windows.html for an explanation of the scaling issues.) The easiest thing to do is to set the Stage scaleMode to noScale and the align property to the top left setting. I'm guessing your drawing code isn't expecting the scaling so things are getting put in the wrong place.
3. In case A, the content is automatically put in the application sandbox. In case B, it depends on the URL.
As for the Keyboard input, this may depend on how you are loading the SWF and from where. This could be related to #3 above, although I would expect to see security errors. How are you adding your keyboard event handlers?

Navigator Window Doesn't display properly

Hello,
Suddenly the Navigator Window on the Left of JDeveloper doesn't show properly.Usually the window has 2 subwindows : the top which displays WorkSPace-Projects-classes and bottom which shows the members and methods for each class. Now my top window doesn't show at all. It is like it has been minimized and i cannot restore it. The bottom window occupies all the space.
When i place the cursor on top of the upper border of the bottom window (just under the green X icon) the cursor changes to a shape that shows that there is another window there but i cannot drag the border down and display again the top navigator window.
What can i do about that ? ?

I have seen this problem before but I have not been able to reproduce it.
The workaround is to:
- Open the 'Welcome' workspace (Help|Welcome Workspace)
- Close JDeveloper
- Launch JDeveloper
- Open your workspace

My Finder window doesn't display properly after drag & drop

When I do a drag/drop - maybe to add a mail attachment or insert a picture into Powerpoint - the Finder window changes/freezes in that it I can no longer scroll up or left - any ideas what might be going wrong?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.

You can then quit Terminal.

Gmail mail window doesn't display properly

I have windows 7. When I open g-mail, the mail window shrinks and only displays who the e-mail is from and the time received. The other features and columns etc on the g-mail page are properly displayed. I don't have this problem in windows explorer.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

EbaY "live chat" window doesn't work properly in Safari.

Currently running Safari 2.0.2, I believe the latest. On the most part, this browser works great but I am having issues with the "live chat" window aspect of ebaY. I can't type the letter "t" and the actual window gui is not fully extended as I can't see the bottom of the window displaying the status bar. Is this an issue with ebaY's application or Safari?

Update: I've installed the lastest Firefox 1.5 and it seems to be doing the job that Safari is having trouble with. That is at least properly handling the "live chat" window in ebaY, including being able to type the letter t and displaying the complete gui window. I hope Apple gets on the ball about fixing this bug.

To get your CD or DVD drive working correctly, try these suggestions in the order listed.
Reinstall the Driver
Hold the Windows key and press the 'x' key to open a menu in the lower-left. In this menu, select "Device Manager." Expand "DVD/CD-ROM drives." Right-click the entry for the CD/DVD drive nested under "DVD/CD-ROM drives," then select "Uninstall." Finally, restart the computer. The computer will reinstall the drivers for the drive.
Power Cycle
Even when your laptop is off and unplugged, residual power can still be held in some components. While this is normal, clearing it can help with some hardware problems. Perform these steps to complete what’s called a power cycle.
Ensure the laptop is turned off.
Unplug the laptop's AC power cable.
Unplug all wires and peripherals. This includes CDs, DVDs, USB sticks, mice, printers, and any other accessories.
Remove the battery (if the model has a removable battery). If the model does not have a removable battery, check your user's guide to determine if you have a pinhole reset on the bottom. If you do, press this.
Hold down the power button for thirty seconds.
Reattach the battery if removed.
Connect the AC adaptor to the power socket that was confirmed to be working in the first step.

System Restore

System Recovery
If the System Restore doesn't solve the issue, you could try a System Reset. Web site doesn't display properly when viewed in Windows 8.1 and IE11. Site html and css validates no errors at W3C. Any ideas?

The following is what I see in IE11 on a Windows 8.1 system, no difference using Firefox, Chrome or Safari on the same system.

All computers are personal computers, a PC though is also "non-Apple" in common usage.
Mac also is platform and OS.

The external DVD/CD Writer will Not appear on your desktop when you attach it to your iMac. It will appear in "Finder", which is in your Dock.

Swing doesn't refresh/repaint properly

Hi,
I'm trying to display a very simple dialog that just about says "Please wait" while I do i/o extensive processing, and can't for the life of me succeed. I tried many things, including Threads, SwingWorker, to no avail. Something seems fishy in that I would expect a window that is setVisible(true) to be completely painted before processing resumes, but in all my cases the window comes up empty while the work gets done.
Is there something special that I should do?
Similarly, sending a somedialog.setVisible(false) before doing some I/O work erases the window but leaves the background erased, i.e. the underlying window doesn't refresh. How can I ensure that any GUI stuff is finished before resuming the processing?

The first page doesn't open properly

When I updated Fireforx to the 5th version, it now doesn't work properly. To open th1st page it takes ages and then the small window comes out with the message that scenario: chrome:/tavgp/content/libs/include/js:595 is busy or doesn't answer, then I close this window and the page opens.

Since itunes 2.0.4 has been downloaded. My ipod doesn't synchronize properly/ at all.The LED screen shows "copy 1 or 2 from 101" and it will remain like that. It looks like sync but there's nothing to happen. It doesn't stop by it self. How to solve?

I have exactly the same issues with my new 80G iPOD. I have found that when connecting to my PC, the iPOD does not start iTUNES 7. This can be resolved by stopping the iPOD Service in Computer Management, connecting the iPOD and then starting it again. Seems like a stupid long-winded way to do things, but at least you can get some stuff on to your iPOD.
As far as using Restore goes - I just get the restoring iPOD message you described, which it blatantly isn't :((

Apple tv 3 airplay doesn't work properly on Itunes 10.6.1

So me and my dad recently bought the new apple tv and everything works fine except for a few things, he doesn't connect properly with Itunes so I can't use Airplay and Homesharing. Is there a solution for this? I've seen more discussions on the community but haven't discovered a good solution yet.
Another strange thing about airplay is that sometimes it does show up in itunes but you can't connect cause of unkown fault (-150006), sometimes it can't connect but it's trying to for a long time and the connection window just dissapears and you can try again but still nothing is going to change and in very rare occassions it works?
We've tried a lot of things: resetting wi-fi router, resetting and restarting apple tv, turning on and off wi-fi on macbook, restarting itunes or macbook, we've bought an ethernet cable but still that doesn't make any difference, I've turned firewall off but that didn't work either.
My dad went to a local authorised Apple reseller and the only thing they said is that it should work so that didn't help us much.
So what can we do about this?

Also, the solution of using an Ethernet cable is no good for me. I live in a shared house, the router is in the landlords room. So I can log into the router and make changes, I have also tried rebooting, and resetting the router. But can not permanently use an ethernet cable.
Anyway, my friend is using his (unupgraded) apple tv just fine in the next room.
As I mentioned, it was just fine the way the router is now BEFORE the firmware upgrade. Straight after it connects for a few minutes at most. And in the last few hours it has refused to connect at all
