Windows My Music folder MIA

Hello everyone.
I have a small problem on my hands here. On my work computer, the latest version on itunes was installed and working properly until the network guys came in to do some routine maintenence on everyones computer. After those guys were here, itunes would not open and I got an error message saying "The iTunes folder could not be found or created. The default location in in the My Music folder."
So I checked and my My Music folder was not there at all. it was not in the recycle bin either. I tried using tweakUI to reassign my My Music folder, but the special folder dialog does not even have the My Music folder as an option to change.
Any ideas?
I've tried re-downloading and re-installing, i found some setup files from older versions of itunes and tried intalling those. Everytime I get the same message.
By the way, all my mp3s are still okay. I had them in a separate folder on the hard drive. I'm stuck using MediaPlayer, and that alone is making me want to throw up.
Anyway, the only other thing I can think of is doing a re-intall of windows (or perhaps a repair install) to get that f-ing My Music folder back. But that is the absolute last resort, and it would now have to be done by our "network guys".
I'm lost and frustrated. Please help.
Dell Windows XP Pro

If you cannot see the ‘My Music’ folder within the TweakUI drop-down selection, proceed on to the following:
1 On the start menu go to ‘Run’
2 Type in RegEdit
3 Navigate in RegEdit to HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
4 Delete any entry for ‘My Music’
5 Navigate up the tree to HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
6 Make sure there is an entry for ‘My Music’ and is pointing to C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\My Music (you can edit the value by double clicking it)
7 Close RegEdit
8 Reboot
iTunes &/or TweakUI should now be able to find the folder.

I've always kept my music in mp3 format in my Windows Vista "Music" folder. When I drag a particular album to itunes, it imports it and I'm able to add to my iphone. Let's try this first. Hold down the Shift key while you try to launch iTunes. You should eventually see the following dialog:
Click "Choose library". Browse to inside the following location (depending on what operating system you're running):
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes library
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\iTunes\
... and open the iTunes library you find in there.

I suspect design rather than a bug, it's too useful. The behaviour seems to have been consistent for quite a long time on both Windows and Mac machines...
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
In the layout above right, with the media folder (everything in the red box) inside the library folder, the library will be portable. A portable library can be moved from one path to another, or even between Windows & Mac computers, without breaking the links between the library and the media, and being self-contained is much easier to backup (You do backup, don't you?). Anything that isn't stored inside the media folder must stay put or be restored to precisely the same path on a new machine or iTunes won't know where to find it. Within the media folder the relative paths from the library to the media remain unchanged and iTunes can cope even when the absolute paths are updated.
Should your library not be in the usual layout I've written some general posts on how to make a split library portable or I can give specific instructions on request.

  • HT1473 why does itunes media folder location in windows 8 goes to \username\music\music when pointed to the my music folder

I have recently decided to upgrade to windows 8 and with it clean out all the music in my itunes media collection and start fresh.
Before I start to download my purcharsed iCloud music or import my cds I set my media folder location to be "c:\users\username\my music\"
and the below images show the outcome, which seems like its a bug and it annoys me.
so now i have a folder called music inside the my music folder in my users profile, this seems really stupid i hope its a bug that gets fixed
if i set it as the below then all the music artists folder names appear straight under c:\users\username\
Why does the extra \music\ folder get added ?!?!!??? it just makes it messy.

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
Essentially iTunes wants to put its content into <Media Folder>\<Media Kind>\<Subfolders>. • Re-installed Windows 7/iTunes 10.7.  iTunes sees my iPhone 3gs.  Won't sync.  I have back ups to the cloud and my computer but moved my music folder.  How do I resync with a backup???  What's the file called that I need?

What is the name of the file I need to resync back to what I had before I reinstalled Windows7/Itunes?
I don't want to lose all of my apps.  iTunes does see the phone but either has miscalcuated and told me I'm over
the size of my allocated sizes for music/apps, but when I uncheck, it still won't sync.
Best way, I assume is to go back to the last backup.  So help me out here, what are the file (s) I need and
where are they best stored?  I have all my music now on my J drive, not my C drive.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks,
    Sue

I backed up to the iCloud and to my computer.  Only thing I seem to be missing is a couple playlists.  I just didn't want to lose my paid apps.
So what I see in my music folder and then another folder called iTunes and then files like iTunes Library, iTunes Library extras, iTunes Music Library aren't anything that is a back up, I take it, since you said the back up would be under programs?  If this statement is true, now I "get" it!
And just to be clear, in iTunes, in my apps, there are all the apps I have gotten for free or paid for.  But the problem there was that the Sync was grayed out and if I check it, everything goes crazy with saying I don't have enough room.  I unchecked the music folder, and still had problems.
Oh, I hate this part of the iPhone stuff!

  • How can i stop iTunes 7 for Windows from opening automatically whenever I browse my Music Folder in Windows?

Whenever I'm browsing through my files on my PC, if I open the iTunes folder inside my music folder, iTunes automatically launches.  If I close iTunes without browsing away from this folder, it simply re-opens itself.
edit:  I have no Apple devices currently connected to the computer and WiFi Sync is disabled.
How can I stop this behaviour?

iTunes app on the iPhone is for purchasing music.
The fact the iPhone starts playing when connected to your car stereo is a function of your car bluetooth system.
Consult your car dealer/bluetooth system manual.
I have attempted to delete all music from the device (so there would be nothing to play), but 1 song remains in the iphone memory and I have been unable to delete that song.
Connect the iPhone to computer and select it in iTunes.
Click the Music tab and uncheck Sync music.
Then click Apply at lower right of iTunes.

Right click on these track in your iTunes library and select the Get Info option.  When the GI window pops up, click on the Options tab and change the Media Type to audiobooks.  While you are at it you may want to enable the Skip When Shuffling and Remember playback position options as well.

  • How do i save a .m4v file to the movie folder when it will only save to the music folder?

I have a movie file in my ITunes music folder that i want to mover to the movie folder because it is a movie. The file type is a .m4v. When i click and drag it itunes wont let me drop it in movies.
    What do i do??

You drag it using Windows Explorer and not in iTunes.  Itunes library merely link the movie in iTunes library to your file location.
After you have dragged the file to another location, remember to link your original movie in itunes library to the new location.  Right mouse click the movie, GET INFO, click LOCATE and direct to the new location (otherwise, your movie will not play)

  • Moved iTunes music folder to HDD, Now iTunes Can't Find it--Help :-)

I finally was able to get an HDD that actually mounted and now I have moved my iTunes music folder based on the instructions here: iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder. I printed them out and followed them step-by-step.
Before moving the folder iTunes Music from my internal HD (~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music) to the trash, I played random tracks with no problem. So I moved the folder to the trashcan, then emptied the trash as instructed. Went back to iTunes to play some music, and now all of my tracks have the dreaded exclamation point in the first column. When I click on a track to play it, I get the message "The song 'blah blah blah' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
Of course, I can select 'Yes' and go through the steps and locate the files on my HDD. This, however, is not an optimal process with over 2400 songs. Does anyone know what went wrong with my relocation?

I've used that method to transfer music from one drive to another literally dozens of times and never seen it fail in the way you experienced. I'm at a loss to explain how you could have followed the instructions, successfully transfer the music to the new drive, and yet have the iTunes database still think the music should be on the original drive.
What I can suggest are two solutions: One for it you don't care about keeping your playlists, rankings, and playcounts intact. The other for if you do care.
Fast fix but loses the meta data: Quit iTunes. Open your home directory, find the music folder and open it. Trash everything you see in your music folder and restart iTunes. All your music and playlists will be gone. Open your new drive on the desktop, find the folder with your music, and drag it into your iTunes window. Your music will be imported into a new iTunes catalog and then you can create your playlists.
Keeping the metadata: After quitting iTunes, move the music back to its original location by dragging the music folder(s). Unmount the new drive and play some music. Remember the songs you clicked on and showed iTunes how to find? Do those songs all over again and once you've verified the iTunes library now points to all the songs properly, delete the songs from the new drive and repeat the steps to move them again.

  • How can I move my iPod iTunes Music Folder from C: drive to a New Drive?

Running out of space on my PC's C: drive, so I tried moving all the folder to my new E: drive ie: (E:\My Music 2\iTunes).
ALSO set iTunes (Edit/Preferences/Advanced/iTunes Music Folder location to E:\My Music 2\iTunes - but nothing seems to help!)
All of the files couldn't find the source files, unless I pointed to them one by one.
Can't move them all back because they are about 7GB+, and I now only have about 5.5 GB on my C: drive.
And when I just went to open iTunes again, all my libraries don't even show.
I'm afraid to plug in my ipod for synching until I get this straight, for fear of messing that up too.
    Please advise.

To move your iTunes music to an external drive...
    1 Quit iTunes.
2 Move the entire iTunes folder including music to
    the external drive.
In point #2 do you mean move the entire Program File folder of iTunes or just the "My Documents" iTunes library folder?
I have a full laptop, a big iPod and an external HD, I am trying to figure out how to store my library on the HD, but access it as if it were on the laptop.
I moved my iTunes library to the HD and then in iTunes I used the "add folder to library" function, but it brought all of the song files back onto the laptop.

  • How can I move iTunes music folder to another drive?

I have iTunes version 7.1 running on a notebook with Windows Vista. My iTunes music folder is becoming too large for the C; drive and I am having problems successfully moving it to the D: drive.
I know the folder is in the D: drive because I can see it there. I have followed guidance on how to link it to iTunes: Edit / Preferences / Advanced / General / Change (choosing iTunes music folder on the D: drive) / OK. I have also ticked the "Keep iTunes Music folder organised" box, as well as the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" box. Nevertheless, when I open iTunes my music does not appear in the library.
    What am I doing wrong?

Firstly there is more than one kind of iTunes Library file:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732
Secondly you should consolidate your library:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesMac/7.3/en/670x.html
The following link will give you the instructions to move iTunes to an EHD. These instructions need to be followed EXACTLY.
The 2 metadata files within the main iTunes folder must stay on the main drive of your system as that is their "home", they can't be moved.
    Now read this:
