Windows OEM on Macbook

I have read a few reviews by people that say you cant run Windows OEM on a Macbook. I was wondering if this is true. I am looking to add Winxp to it instead of Vista. I need it to run Microsoft Money as I am comfortable with it and dont feel like waisting money on Quicken for Mac if I might not like it. I know I like MS Money so that seems the logical choice.

Hi,
If you have an Intel Core 2 Duo macbook, then yes you can. I am running Windows Vista currently and everything is flawless. You can also install Windows XP since the bootcamp 2.0 drivers works both for Vista and XP.
For those who said that they were not able to run Windows, maybe their macbooks were the Intel Core Duo's, not the Intel Core 2 Duo's.
To see if you have the Intel Core 2 Duo macbook, you just have to
1) Click on the Apple Logo on the upper left hand corner
2) Click on About this Mac
3) Click on More Info
4) Click on Hardware
5) Under Processor Name, it should say Intel Core 2 Duo
If it doesn't say that, then you cannot run Windows.
Maybe this is easier, if you bought your macbook after May 15, 2007 then you have a Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook.
Hope this helps

  • CD Boot: memory overflow error! Trying to install Bootcamp / Windows 7 on MacBook Pro 2009 with external superdrive

    Hi all,
I'm trying to install Bootcamp on my machine.
I was running Parallels before but need Bootcamp in order to run heavy software on the PC side (e.g. Rhino/Maxwell/etc).
I have a Macbook Pro 17" from around 2009, running Mountain Lion 10.7.3.
Problem is, my internal CD Drive is broken and doesn't read discs, so it couldn't read the Windows installation disc (Windows Home Premium 7 64 bit - OEM System Builder Pack).
So, I rang Apple to try to fix it and they said it would be cheaper and faster to buy an external SuperDrive.
I explained that I wanted it to install bootcamp and they said, fine.
However when I bought the SuperDrive, it turns out its only supposed to be working with new Macbook Pro with Retina display, and other machines that don't have internal cd drives.
At first it didnt work, but then I found a helpful website which enabled it to work on my machine.
So I went ahead and started installing Windows through the BootCamp Assistant.
It partitioned my hard drive - success!
But then it turned into black screen, with message saying "CDBOOT: Memory overfloor error"
    Help please!!!
I suspect the problem is either:
    a) Old Macbook Pro can't boot from the Windows disk
    or
    b) The Windows OEM version is somehow not designed to work with Mac. I bought it secondhand off a guy, thinking it was the full version, silly thing to do!
Your thoughts and help is seriously appreciated!
Tomorrow I'm going to the Apple Store and also to buy a brand new copy of Windows, I guess.

This has been resolved. It turned out that in spite of the message at the end of installation - "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer restart the installation" Windows was installed successfully but the problem was the Bootcamp drivers, it could not read them(install them) from my original OSX Istall DVD and I thought that that the whole package was not installed successfully. I will copy the intructions here as well since this thread may attract lots of other people with similar problem who may think it was not a good installation. Here you go:
Ok, after 3 sleepness nights I have found a solution and finally have a working Windows 7 Ultimate. I hope this will be helpful for everyone having similar issues and not have to go through the same nightmare.
Right away after logging in Windows for the first time insert the original Snow Leopard Install DVD and if Windows does not read it or install any drivers after clicking on setup.exe do the following:
Right-click on Start » Programs » Accessories » Command Prompt
    Select Run as Administrator
Type cd /d D:, then press Enter
Type cd Boot Camp\Drivers\Apple, then press Enter
    Type BootCamp64.msi, then press Enter
If you do not how to right click before installing the drivers the following:
    Click on Start
Enter cmd in the search box
Instead of hitting the Enter key use Ctrl + Shift + Enter and will open a dialog box
Click Yes at the prompt and you will be running as an administrator.
If you do not have the original install DVD go the this link and follow the instructions(including the ones from the last comment):

    Hello,
I need to run Windows in my Macbook.
So I know I need to get Parallels or VM Fusion.
What I don't know is how do I get a windows program and which one? I checked and there are SP2 and SP2 ORM? Which one I need?
    Thanks
    ZK

Hi ZK and welcome to Discussions,
the OEM (not ORM) version of Windows XP with SP2 will work just fine with either Parallels, VMWare Fusion or Apples BootCamp.

  • I want to run Quicken through Windows on my macbook pro, whats the best way to do this?

I want to run Quicken 2012 through Windows on my macbook pro, whats the best way to do this?
I have been looking at Parallels or VMware in order to use Windows but then I will also need to get a Windows license. Just looking for the most inexpensive way possible as this will probably be the only Windows app I run.
Also looking at this CrossOver software which says you dont need Windows license. Anyone used this before? had success?

CrossOver's website has a list of software it has certified as working or working with known issues - Quicken 2012 has a bronze rating meaning it runs but with enough issues that it isn't recommended. In other words, "Run away!"
Get a copy of Windows 7 OEM from Amazon or New Egg and give it a try with VirtualBox (an open source virtualization program). If VirtualBox doesn't cut it you can always buy VMWare or Parallels.

  • How to install only windows 7 on macbook 4.1?

how to install only windows 7 on macbook4,1?
i have windows 7 dvd, i want to install windows 7 only and does not want to keep  msc os 10.5.8. currently i do not have any cd or DVD which came with my macbook. So i need to know:
    1- how i install windows 7?
    2- 32bit or 64bit windows?
3- after installing how to get drivers of my macbook?

There is no disc of Mountain Lion, and if there were it would not contain drivers, those  are on your original OSX disc (the one that came with the machine) or you can download them using Boot Camp Assistant.
You will need a 64 bit copy of Windows, OEM or retail.

  • Bootcamp assistant doesn't restarts to the Windows installer. Macbook pro 13" (early 2015)

I'm trying to install windows 8.1 on my new macbook pro 2015, things are good until I got to the point after I chose the size of partition then mac restarts. It supposed to reboot to windows installer as described in step 4 below, but it boots into mac.
I was able to install the windows to my macbook air before without a problem, hope someone could suggest what I did wrong here.
Followed exact steps from here - How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support
    1. Check System Requirements
Some versions of Windows require a certain processor, and more hard drive space and memory (RAM) than others. Check the documentation that came with your copy of Windows to find out what you need. Then use System Information to see what your Mac currently has.
    2. Create a disk image of your Windows disc
When you purchase Windows, it either comes as a disk image file (ISO) or as an installation disc. If your copy of Windows came on a DVD, you should create a disk image of your installation disc.
    3. Open Boot Camp Assistant
Boot Camp Assistant walks you through installing Windows on your Mac. Open this app from the Utilities folder in the Applications folder and follow the onscreen instructions to automatically repartition your startup disk and download related software drivers for Windows. When prompted, connect your USB flash drive.
    4. Format your Windows partition
When you complete the assistant, your Mac restarts to the Windows installer. When you're asked where you want to install Windows, select the BOOTCAMP partition, then click Format.
    5. Install Windows
Follow the onscreen prompts to finish your Windows installation.
    6. Restart your computer
After Windows is installed, you can switch between OS X and Windows. Use the Startup Disk preference pane in OS X, or the Boot Camp system tray item in Windows to select your startup disk, then restart your computer

Ok, I finally got the problem solved. It didn't mention anywhere that I have to restart and holding down the 'option' key, then go to EFI boot... hope it'll help someone with the same issue.
    Cheers!

  • Cannot boot from usb flash to install Windows 8 on Macbook Pro 13"

    Hi! All
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 13" and I want to install Windows 8 on it. I use bootable USB stick, which I can boot fine from on my PC, so I assume it's not the USB stick that is a problem. First of all Bootcamp didn't recognise it. Fine, I partitioned the laptop's hard drive myself. Then while rebooting I held the Option key to manually select the USB drive, but it did not appear on the list. As someone suggested on the internet I even replugged USB stick to another slot during while on that screen, but it didn't help too.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install Windows from a USB drive in one of these Macs:
    - MacBook Pro with Retina display.
    - Mac mini (Mid 2010 and newer).
    - MacBook Air.
    - iMac (Late 2012).
You don't have any of these computers, so you can't install Windows through a USB disk. Its firmware doesn't allow you to start up from your Windows installation disk.
You have to buy Windows 8 on a DVD. You need a System Builder version, which you can buy at Amazon or NewEgg. Follow Apple's steps to install Windows on the MacBook Pro > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf

  • How to completely remove mac os and install windows 7 on macbook pro with retina display 15 inch

how to completely remove mac os and install windows 7 on macbook pro with retina display 15 inch

There's not much sense in purchasing a Mac to run only Windows on it.  Keep in mind that drivers for Windows are a secondary concern for Apple.  While Windows will typicall run fine, things like power managment are not optimized under Windows (you'll get less time on battery while running Windows).  You will also not be able to install firmware updates.  Firmware updates might be necessary whether you run Windows or OS X as they are updates to the code in your hardware and are not OS-specific.  You must be running OS X in order to install a firmware update.  You can do this even if you boot off of an external drive with OS X installed on it.  At the very least, you should keep just a small partition for OS X on your internal drive.

  • Install windows on my MacBook Pro7,1 (Version 10.6) **doesn't have an optical drive**

I recently replaced my HDD for a 1 GB SSD. Then I took out my optical drive and installed a HDD. I wanted the extra space to store videos and pic and such. I also upgraded the RAM.
I want to use bootcamp to install windows on my macbook pro. However, when I go to Boot Camp Assistant, its says "You need an optical drive to install Windows."
***I removed my optical drive and now have a HDD. I want to use a USB.***
SO, after I click continue... it gives me two options. Option 1 says Download the Windows support software for this Mac. Option 2 says I have the Mac OS X installation disc that came with my Mac or I have already downloaded the Windows support software for this Mac to a CD, DVD, or external disk.
My question is, HOW DO I INSTALL WINDOWS on my Macbook pro?
do I have to have an optical drive? that means, I have to take out my HDD and put my optical drive back in. Or can I just use a USB? if so , HOW?
Can I install Windows (7, 8.1) to a USB? Or download the Windows support software to a USB? and click on Boot Camp Assistant and click option 2? so when it asks me to put in the CD, I can just plug in the USB and install the Windows support software? and then put the codes in to install windows?
I hope I'm making sense. I saw several videos on Youtube and i just need some help.
    Thank You.

So basically, I have trying to  install windows on my mbp using a usb drive. However bootcamp wont allow  me to do so since I have a optical drive on the laptop. I have been  searching for a long time and eventually came across this solution and I  would like to share this so u guys dont have to google all over the  place again .
The solutions given before by changing info.plist is correct except  that now Bootcamp crashes everytime you change it in OSX 10.9.
    Full solution:
    1. Add your Boot Rom Version(from system info) under DARequiredROMVersions.
    2. Add Model Identifier(from system info) under PreUSBBootSupportedModels
    3. Delete "Pre" from "PreUSBBootSupportedModels", so you have "USBBootSupportedModels"
The first 3 steps are same as before and if its not clear you can easily google solutions with screenshots.
The  next step is only for OSX 10.9, as it employs some kind of code  signature to prevent you from changing info.plist and cause bootcamp to  crash.
    4. Open your terminal, use the following command
    sudo codesign -fs - /Applications/Utilities/Boot\ Camp\ Assistant.app
Sudo  means using administrator privilege and u need to enter your mac  password. And the command resigns the bootcamp application so that it  runs with the new info.plist file and not crash.
    5. Continue on with your installation....
    Cheers.
P.S. back up info.plist before u change anything.

  • Can I install Windows 8 on MacBook Pro retina?

I need to install Windows 8 or 7 in Boot Camp in order to run my embroidery software. What specific form of Windows do I need to install a full version (not an upgrade, since I do not have Windows on the MacBook Pro)? Also, I understand that Boot Camp 5 will not run Windows 8.1. Should I buy Windows 7 and steer clear of 8 altogether?
My Bernina and Floriani embroidery software will run on either Windows 7 or 8.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Joanna

Yes but with that version, style, it is tied to the first set of hardware, computer, it is installed on. So in theory it can't be moved to another set of hardware, computer.
