Windows "Regional Options" locale (8bit vs 16bit character sets)

I have a Java application that reads in an Encrypted text file. The text file was Encrypted using JCE 1.2.1 and Encrypted on a Windows system with the locale set to English(US). The Encryption uses Sun's version of the DES encryption algorithm.
This app reads in the Encrypted text file and Decrypts it and processes it's information.
This works fine on Windows systems if the Regional Options control panel is set to a region that uses 8bit character sets:
- English
- Italian
- Spanish
- French
But, if the locale is set to 16bit character set regions, the text file cannot be read and parsed. Such regions include:
- Russian
- Greek
- English (Hong Kong)
At this point, I think I have two options, but I would love to hear about more:
- Edit the Encrypting/Decrypting code (or the parsing code - parses through a comma deliminated file) so that the file that is Encrypted and Decrypted can handle either an 8bit or 16bit character sets
(Don't know how to do this)
or
- Programatically change the locale of Windows machines to English(US) at application start-up and then change it back to the previous locale setting on application shut-down
(Don't know how to do this either)
I'd appreciate any help. I'm not sure if this is an International issue or an JCE issue.
Thanks in advance

I found an answer to the problem I was having.
The culprit were two special characters that the client was using in the encrypted text to distinguish between different fields and to distinguish carriage returns ( and ). The non Latin alphabet languages didn't know what to do with those characters so they substituted there own characters, thus breaking the parsing logic which was hard coded to look for and .
The problem also was related to the fact that the JCE works with byte[] arrays. FileInputStreams (which deal with byte[] arrays) seem to convert the special characters to new characters in non Lating languages to match what was going on in the JCE logic.
The easiest fix I could come up with, was to include a new properties file to be read by a separate FileInputStream. This properties text file contained just two characters (). When I loaded in this new properties file via a FileInputStream, the two characters () in the properties file magically change to match the currently active alphabet (or didn't change at all if the computer was using a Latin alphabet).
By checking the new properties file to see what the characters had changed to (if they had), I was able to know what to use to parse the encrypted data. And as such, regardless of what language the computer was set to, the encrypted data is now parsed correctly, as I took out the hard coding that looked specifically for the characters and and instead rewrote the code so it now uses the characters from the properties file (or whatever characters they change to) for parsing the content data.
I hope others find this useful.

  • Window View Options saved without having to manually set each one of them?

    Hello!
I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger.
Okay, why do my finder window views change across all finder windows once I change the view of one?  I prefer to have some windows to be viewable by icon, but I want some to be viewed as a list.  In Tiger, my settings for every folder that I opened were saved specifically to the folder based on how I last viewed them.  Under Snow Leopard, when I open one folder and get List view, I change it to Icon view only to have every other folder automatically set to Icon view.  It's like I have to manually save every single finder winow with the preference I want to view it in, whereas Tiger automaticaly remembered how I last viewed each window.  This is quite annoying.
    Thanks!

The inherit thing is not, and I repeat not, quite the same behavior in versions before Snow Leopard.
Not exactly, no; but the principle is the same: the child inherits the parent's characteristics.
In OS 9 it was even more so in at least one way - if you changed the size/shape of the parent folder's window (making it tall and narrow, for example), the initial window for a folder created thereafter in the parent folder would match the altered size/shape of the parent. That doesn't happen in Lion, maybe not in Snow Leopard (can't boot into it right now to check).
I go back to '86 on Macs, to a Mac Plus. I've used every OS version from then up through OS 9.2.2, including all point updates. I've owned most generations of Macs, with the glaring exceptions of the G3 Beige/Platinum models and the G5 models.
I think my favorite OS is OS 9.1. I stayed using OS 9.1 (on a G4 (DA) model) for as long as I could - its software still does what it used to do, and I still use that machine for a lot of things. What made me finally get a newer machine running OS X was the net - too many sites, like BBC, became unavailable with OS 9. I jumped straight from OS 9 to Snow Leopard, skipping the intermediates.
Frankly, I don't like OS X all that much. It's too pre-defined, not enough customizations available - like the creators of it felt like they had better knowledge of what my workflow needs are than I do.
And, an alert in case you haven't come across it yet - in Lion there is no Save (beyond an initial Save wherein you name and place the doc) or Save As (none at all). "Save" is automatic now - you can no longer close a doc and choose to not save changes as a quickie undo; however, you can revert to previous versions if you happened to remember to 'Save a Version' before making changes to the doc. There is a Duplicate menu item which can lead to the same result as a Save As - but takes more steps to get there. Nuts. I can see no improvement in these changes, no increase in convenience, no reason for them at all.
But there they are. And, I expect that in time I'll get used to a change in the way I do things. But I do not like having that change mandated.

  • MP3 ID3 tags in non standard character set

    Hello,
I'm curious as to how I can rip a cd as mp3 and read the tags that have been encoded in a non western or unicode character set. Right now I'm using the LANG environment variable and setting it to the locale that matches the character set, ripping the songs, and then writing the tags using easytag as unicode before resetting the LANG variable. This is fine, but it gets annoying as once I change the language a lot of my programs also start using that language and I would like them to remain english.
Is there a simpler and more straight-forward way of doing this?

Just guessing, but what if you only set LC_CTYPE to whatever language you need?

  • Conversions between character sets when using exp and imp utilities

I use EE8ISO8859P2 character set on my server,
when exporting database with NLS_LANG not set
then conversion should be done between
EE8ISO8859P2 and US7ASCII charsets, so some
characters not present in US7ASCII should not be
    successfully converted.
But when I import such a dump, all characters not
present in US7ASCII charset are imported to the database.
I thought that some characters should be lost when
doing such a conversions, can someone tell me why is it not so?

Not exactly. If the import is done with the same DB character set, then no matter how it has been exported. Conversion (corruption) may happen if the destination DB has a different character set. See this example :

  • Accessing Windows XP "Regional Options"

In the Windows XP control panel, I can set the "Regional Options" for my computer. For example, the currency format looks like this: "$123,456,789.00" and the time format like this: "16:10:51".
Is there an API that allows me to access these formats from within Java, and can notify me when they change?

Is there any native API such as C/C++ that we
can call and then we can in turn write our own JNI
interface to connect to it.Clearly there is, because many of the Windows programs I use every day display dates in the format I specified in the Regional Settings.
Do I know what it is? No. But this isn't the best place to look for that information. MSDN is the best place.

  • JDK1.3: Regional Options

    Hi,
I'm using Win2000 Prof platform for development. The Locale and Language in "Regional Options" were set to "Typical Chinese (Hong Kong)". When I use JDK1.3 to compile my Java programs, strange symbols and Chinese will be displayed if any output messages (e.g. error messages) are generated by the compiler. I would like to have English display instead of Chinese and those strange symbols, but I don't want to set the locale and language for Win2000 to English. Could anyone give your advices? Thanks in advance!
P.S.: No such display problem when I used JDK1.2.

I am having the same problem on my Japanese Windows 2000 professional using Java 1.4.2_01. Did you find a solution?

    1. Check if you have sufficient permission on the document library and its documents.
    2. If permission is all correct, then the problem looks like in your file name. Check your File Name, Length, and Invalid Character Restrictions and Recommendations.

When your Windows Server 2008 R2 computer is still accessible, you can reset or change your administrator password with ease by the following steps.
Step 1: Log in your Windows Server 2008 R2 computer through the administrator account.
Step 2: Click on “Start” on the lower left corner of your screen, and hit “Control Panel”, and then doubt-click on "User Account".
Step 3: Choose “Make changes to your user account”, and then click on “Change your password”.
Step 4: Now you will be asked to enter your current password, type in it.
Step 5: Enter your new password and retype it to confirm your new password. You are optional to type in a word or phrase as the hint of the new password. It is highly recommended.
Another tip, Using a password recovery tool to recover WIndows server 2008 administrator password
This is a universal WIndows password recovery method which can fix any Windows system password issue.
    1. Get Windows Password Rescuer and install it on another computer.
    2. Burn password reset disk into USB or CD/DVD device with Windows password recovery.
    3. Boot Windows server from password reset USB or CD disk
    4. Reset forgotten Windows server 2008 local or domain admin password without data loss.

I also have seen a way that users can use a Windows server 2008 install CD to reset the administrator password, you could search and have a try.

  • Need to add Polish option to character set menu in SAP Gui

    Basis Gurus,
We have installed the Polish language on our unicode R/3 system and now
need to add it as a character set option in the Gui menu.
    Menu Path:
Customize Local Layout --> Character Set --> (Missing Option for Polish)
I have searched OSS and online resources and have not found out how to
add an entry in this menu.
I did alter the file frontEN.txt in which the menu entries are built,
but did this not add the entry.
Can you please advise on the procedure to add this entry. Our
developers need it to view special Polish characters in their SapScript.
    Thanks,
    Jeff Martens

    Deepak,
Thanks for the reply.  I've read that document before, it's helpful with some of the I18N settings, but does not explain how to add a language to the "character set" menu.
Does anyone know if this is possible?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • Red X - Due to conflict between date format in Windows Regional settings

    Hello
I face the following issue. To display some graphes that result of the selection of a date in a Java calendar (format mm/dd/yy) I have to change the Windows regional settings.
Which of course impact other applications like Excel....
Is there some settings/applet that can be set in Java JRE to prevent this issue ?
Same issue what ever the JRE version used.
    currently JRE 1.4.2_07 VM 1.4.2_07-b05, plug-in 1.4.2_07

    Hi Kevin,
I doubt anyone outside of Sun would be able to give you a definite answer to this one, but from my understanding of the JDK's interactions with Windows, I'd have to say no.
I usually find that about the only Windows default that the JDK picks on is the current user locale. From there, the JDK likely chooses its own default date and currency formatting instances, as these are all packaged up within i18n.jar within the JDK libraries.
If anyone can prove me wrong though, please do!
    Hope that helps!

  • Enabling "Windows activation" option in the "Change Action Center settings" window

    Hi
    I activated Windows 8.1 Update Enterprise 64-bit.
I noticed, however, that, in the "Change Action Center settings" window, the "Windows Activation" option is disabled and picked. How come? How do I enable and unpick it?
    Thanks
    Bye
    Balubeto

    1. What is output of command
    slmgr /dlv
    2. Contact local administrator for help (Enterprise is multilicense and some help is prepaid. If local admin has no solution, he or she can escalate problem.) You have not given more information on infrastructure configuration (KMS ?).
