Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 for Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi Scripting guys,
I have a simple question:
- I want to manage my Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 DHCP server via Powershell: Simple via DHCP Powershell Module
- Now i want to manage it via a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 machine, i upgraded Powershell 2.0 to Powershell 4.0, but when i load the module i cannot find it
-So i copied the DHCP Module files from Windows Server 2012 and load it in my Windows Server 2008 R2, i got a Namespace error.
The question: Is it possible to run Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 modules on Windows Server 2008 R2 ?
Thanks

Until MS has created an RSAT for Win 7 that works with Server 2012 (R2), this is still impossible.  (Win 2008 R2 runs on the same core as Win 7).
However, since your server now has PSv4, you can try
Powershell Remoting and see if it will work with your 2012 R2 Server.

To check the local network for some of the common configuration problems, launch Terminal.app and issue the following diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
That'll report some local configuration information and then either no errors detected and no changes required, or it'll point to whatever configuration errors or issues it might detect.  That doesn't catch everything, but it catches the common errors.
FWIW, 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 are poor choices for the local network, as VPNs are based on IP routing and IP routing gets tangled when the same subnet is used on both ends of the VPN. 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 are near ubiquitous in home networks and coffee shops.

  • Installing terminal server role on windows server 2012 to use for Windows server 2008 R2 machines.

    Dear
Our current setup is as follows :-
Active Driectory is in Windows Server 2003.
Citrix Xenapp version 5.6 with all Xenapp servers in Windows Server 2003
Now we are upgrading our Citrix farm to 6.5 and all Xen app servers into Windows Server 2008R2.
We did the configuration and testing; everything works fine except the terminal server is not configured which gives the pop always for the expiry date.
We do have license for 2012 terminal server which is not possible to downgrade for some reason and managent need to install new Windows Server 2012 for terminal server and activte the licenses.
    My question is :-
1 Whether Windows Server 2008 R2 will get RDS cal license from Windows Server 2012 terminal server (RDS CAL license is of windows server 2012).
    2. What is the role and features I need to activate in Server 2012 in order to use for Citrix 6.5 (only applicable fetaure for getting the RDS cal license.)
    3. Whether I can add this 2012 server into domain. Is it possible to add 2012 server into Windows Server 2003 AD.
Your early reply is highly appreciated.

    Thanks Jeremy..
I got exactly the right answers I am lookoing for ..
I successfully activated the terminal service on the newly created Windows 2012 Server and installed the retail license pack we had of 50+50+25 keys . It later shows the 125 keys successfully applied.
when I tried to link the Xenapp (Windows Server2008R2) to the license server, it first gives me error that session host service role is not installed on the ternial server. So I installed that role also in the terminal server.
But now its anothee error as below.
RDS Cals are not available for this Remote Desktop Session host server, and licensing Diagnostic has identified licensing problems for the RD session host server.
    1. Is it wrong I did by installing session host server role into the terminal server (but really it gave me error like 'session host server role is not running on the license server' when I tried to link the license server).
    2. Is it the problem that Windows Server 2008 R2 will not get license from 2012 RDS CAL license.
    3. whether Clearing house will take time to update the license.
Your reply is highly appreciated. I need to know whether any other way I can link the Windows Server  2008 R2 Servers (Xenapp) to the license server.

  • Can I use my Server 2012 r2 key for Windows 8?

Right now I am using Server 2012, but as a desktop/gaming OS.  I have been getting a bunch of DirectX and xinput errors lately so I wanted to know if my key could be used for Windows 8.1. I got the key through DreamSpark if it matters.

It doesn't really matter where you got it, a server product key cannot be used to install a client OS. Where were you planning to get the installation media for 8.1?
In any case, the server edition which corresponds to 8.1 is server 2012R2. Server 2012 corresponds to Windows 8.

  • Setting up OS X 10.6 Server as a BDC for Windows Server 2003

Having some issues setting up an OS X server to act as a backup domain controller for Windows 2003 Server R2. I'm following the Apple document OpenDirectory_Adminv10.6.pdf.
On page 90, it says I have to first setup the OS X server as an Open Directory Replica. So I turn to page 87 and follow the instructions. It says SSH has to be available on both the OS X server and master OD, this being the Windows server. So I install openSSH on the Windows 2003 server, create the local group file and passwd file. I verify I can ssh into the Windows server from the OS X server as the Windows administrator account.
From a fresh OS X server install (all updates installed and DNS configured to point to the Windows server that is running DNS server service), I follow the steps on page 88 and get stuck at step 9. The configuration logs on OS X says "Removing replica because the replication credentials or suffix could not be determined. (error = 69)".
On the Windows 2003 server, I had to create an account called root. I gave it all the privileges that Administrator has. I couldn't even get past step 8 until I made this account.
    Things I've tried:
Joining the OS X server to Active Directory as a member computer first. (fails both ways, joined and not joined first)
Adding the computer account for the OS X server to the Domain Controllers group in Windows
Not creating a computer account at all and not joining AD first.
I'm not sure what to do from here. Not sure if it's an ssh issue as Windows doesn't have a native ssh server service. I can ssh from a terminal window on OS X so I know ssh is working to some extent. Just not sure if it can get to wherever the replication scripts need to access.
Both the OS X server and Windows 2003 server are on the same sub-net without any firewalls.

    Hi
AFAIK the "Magic Triangle" applies to an environment that also includes OSX Server providing mac-style GPOs - mostly. There's another option called "Cylinder of Destiny" that takes this slightly further although it's still essentially the same. Ultimately what you decide rests on what you want to achieve.
If all you want is SSO for Users working on mac workstations and nothing else, use what Apple provides in the Client OS. You don't necessarily need OSX Server.
It's even possible to alter the AD Schema itself and add Apple specific object classes, attributes and values to provide a means for managing users on mac workstations that way. Again you don't necessarily need OSX Server. In addition there are 3rd-Party solutions that don't involve OSX Server you could consider depending on budget and how hard you want to work? Likewise, Centrify and AdmitMAC are three I can think of.
There's plenty of documentation all over the internet on how to achieve Integration. Its been going on for a few years now. Ultimately how 'successful' it all is will rest primarily on how well your AD is configured. Apple's built-in Active Directory Plug-in in many ways assumes an 'out-of-the-box' AD and ideally an environment that follows Microsoft's Best Practices for AD. I've yet to see one AD that fits that criteria. In some rare cases Integration may not even be possible. You won't really know until you try.

Has anyone encountered problem when installing the download version of 'Oracle Forms Developer/Services 6i/Release 2 for Windows 98/NT/2000/XP' available in the OTN? • Connect from Windows Client to Oracle 10g for Windows 64-bit

Have an environment currently running Oracle 10g 32-bit on Windows 2000 Standard, and need to migrate to Oracle 10g 64-bit for Windows. Users connect to the 10g 32-bit database using the Oracle Client for Windows 10g loaded on remote PC's. If we migrate to the Oracle 10g 64-bit on Windows 2003 Server Enteprise Edition 64-bit, what type of client do I have to install on the PC's to access the Oracle 10g 64-bit database?
Any ehlp/insight will be greatly appreciated.
    Eduardo in Michigan

In addition to install 32-bit Oracle client to 32-bit Windows OS, you need to know whether your application is compiled to run in 32-bit or 64-bit.
This is critical because 32-bit application can not see 64-bit Oracle ODBC and OLE DB provider.
For example, MS SQL Server 2005 uses 32-bit DTS, and SSIS, which needs 32-bit Oracle client
If you don't know, get a copy of both 32-bit and 64-bit Oracle client, and try one-by-one to know for sure. Please be aware that if regsvr32.exe in the Windows has been overwritten by older software installation, it won't register some DLL properly, and Oracle ODBC, or OLE DB won't show up as well

  • Exchange Server 2013 SP1 - Optimize for Single Server Use

    Hello,
i've set up Exchange 2013 SP1 with at last CU6 - get exchangeserver says:
    AdminDisplayVersion             : Version 15.0 (Build 995.29)
    ExchangeVersion                 : 0.1 (8.0.535.0)              - - - funny number ;-) (is this an early version???)
Yes, the annoying 16028 in the application log are running every five minutes, but thats not the main question.
Which services are needed in a SINGLE-SERVER Environment, without DAG and unified messaging?
Can the Self-Checking, Health- and Self-Probing be put down?
    These services are started automatic:
       Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology
       Microsoft Exchange Anti-spam Update
       Microsoft Exchange DAG Management
       Microsoft Exchange Diagnostics
       Microsoft Exchange EdgeSync
       Microsoft Exchange Frontend Transport
       Microsoft Exchange Health Manager
       Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Assistants
       Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication
       Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Transport Delivery
       Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Transport Submission
       Microsoft Exchange Migration Workflow
       Microsoft Exchange Replication
       Microsoft Exchange RPC Client Access
       Microsoft Exchange Search
       Microsoft Exchange Search Host Controller
       Microsoft Exchange Service Host
       Microsoft Exchange Throttling
       Microsoft Exchange Transport
       Microsoft Exchange Transport Log Search
       Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging
Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging Call Router
       Microsoft Exchange-Informationsspeicher
       Microsoft Filtering Management Service
       Microsoft Online Services Sign-in Assistant
And with C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\TransportRoles\data\Queue\mail.que about 512 MBytes size (which may may be a designed default size)...
Have set up about 6 users mailboxes, 3 public folder in a mailbox for public folders. Only for testing purposes sent some (small) mails, no external mails received (only testing receive with 'popcon' for mail delivery to the internal boxes).
The server (2012 R2) is running only in the internal network (yes, with internet connection for updates).
No virus scanners, not third party receive or send connectors, only the 5 default (3 Frontend, 2 Hub) receive Connectors and one Send Connector to our mail provider set up and no user activity (only sometimes from me for testing).
It seems like it's doing only with itself, logging file sizes of above 11 GB (in 4 weeks), with huge amounts of probing, health checking, internal testing, internal updating etc.
Can this logging be set up to a lower level, can services be deactivated (for single server configuration),
the logging volume should be in a useful relation to the mail use of the server, a message for every self test, internal health check etc. in the log-files normally isn't useful, only when problems occur there is a need...
    Thanks in advance
    Andreas

Between Exchange protocol-based log files, PerfMon .blg files used by Managed Availability, IIS logs, etc., the total footprint can add up quickly and these logs are not purged automatically.  You can take a look at this site below and use the powershell
    script to clean it up.

  • Windows Azure Platform Support: "Prompted for "Windows Activation" when logging onto a Windows Azure Role Instance using RDP"

    Symptom
When a user interactively logs (using RDP client) on to a Windows Azure Role Instance running Windows Azure Guest OS 1.11, they see a “Windows Activation” dialog box.
    Action
The user can ignore this dialog box by simply clicking either “Cancel” or “Activate Later” button on the “Windows Activation” dialog box. This pop-up window is just an UI issue in Guest OS 1.11 and no OS functionality
issue. All Role instances running any version of Windows Azure Guest OS has valid volume licensing key and are already activated. There is no need to provide any activation key to validate the OS.
Please don’t try to activate Windows Azure Guest OS using your Windows Server OS Key, this will cause unexpected downtime and will require a reboot. Activating Windows Azure Guest OS is not a supported scenario.
    Workaround
Use the next available OS or any previous version of OS (e.g., 1.10) to work around this issue.

  • Performing Exchange Server patching & service pack for mailbox server without losing some data during the rollback ?

    People,
I'd like to know how can I safely apply the Exchange Server service pack or cumulative update to the Mailbox Server role (no DAG) without losing some email during the downtime and rolling back the snapshot ?
    Can I do the following:
    1. Stop all of the Exchange Server services.
    2. Disconnect the vNIC in Mailbox server
    3. Take VM snapshot
    4. Apply the Exchange Server service Pack / Cumulative Update or Windows Update
    5. Reboot
    6. Reconnect the vNIC, if the server back online again with no issue, commit / delete the snapshot, if not, then disconnect the vNIC followed by roll back.
would that be make sense or supported from both Vmware and Microsoft http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/exchange-2010-on-vmware-support-and-licensing-guide.pdf ?
If yu have any other suggestion, please let me know here.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey AlbertWT,
I'll start off by saying that I wouldn't do it.  Microsoft is explicit that snapshots are not supported with Exchange when virtualized.  See below (from Exchange 2013 virtualization: Exchange 2013 Help):
Some hypervisors include features for taking snapshots of virtual machines. Virtual machine snapshots capture the state of a virtual machine while it's running. This feature enables you to take multiple snapshots of a virtual machine and then revert the virtual machine to any of the previous states by applying a snapshot to the virtual machine. However, virtual machine snapshots aren't application aware, and using them can have unintended and unexpected consequences for a server application that maintains state data, such as Exchange. As a result, making virtual machine snapshots of an Exchange guest virtual machine isn't supported.
Even if we ignore the support statement on snapshots this is still not a good idea.  Here are some things to consider.
    1) Cumulative updates for Exchange make changes to the Active Directory Schema.  Rolling back the snapshot on the Mailbox server will not roll back the changes to AD, which could cause functional and supportability issues.  See this link to give you an idea of how there are AD schema updates in every Exchange CU and service pack: Exchange 2013 Active Directory schema changes: Exchange 2013 Help
    2) It is possible for email to come in during the time that you're testing the update, and if you need to roll back you would need a plan to get that email back.  Third party services could work, or you could prevent email from coming into your environment completely during that time, but those are not ideal solutions.
A far better solution would be to create a lab environment that is isolated from production.  You could either take clones of your Exchange and AD VMs and put them into a network fenced environment, or create a lab and import your AD structure so it matches production.  I think this is a far better way to test than trying to rely on snapshots in production.
    Hope that helps!
    Matt

  • Will MDM for windows phone 8.0 support for windows phone 8.1

We have successfully implemented MDM solution for windows phone 8.0 . Enrolment and polling working properly.
Now devices will come for windows phone 8.1 .Will this existing system work for 8.1 also? Or is there any changes need to be done?

As far as I am aware it will be ok. 8.1 just exposes additional functionality and CSP's available to be manipulated.
I will double check on that to be 100% sure.

  • How to make backward compatibility of windows phone 8.1 app for windows phone 7?

I developed windows phone 8.1 app which is in windows phone store. Now, i want to make this app compatible for windows 7 also. Is it possible, if yes then how?

It may be that you are using non-backward compatible capabilities in your Windows Phone 8.1 app(s).
Developers that want to develop for different OS's usually have platforms with the different OS's on them for developing applications so they work on each platform.
I suppose you developed for Windows phone 8.1 rather than Windows phone 7. Therefore your app runs on a different framework than a Windows phone 7 has as well as probably newer hardware with greater capabilities.
So you will probably need to purchase an older phone that came with Windows phone 7 in order to develop for. I couldn't find documentation like the last link below (App capabilities and hardware requirements for Windows Phone 8) for Windows phone 7
from Microsoft but maybe you can.
Windows Phone OS 7.1 - Developing a Windows Phone Application from Start to Finish
    Types of Applications
The Windows Phone application platform provides two frameworks for developing applications:
    Silverlight
The Silverlight framework supports event-driven, XAML-based application development.
    XNA
The XNA Framework supports loop-based games.
Silverlight and XNA can also be combined in a single application.
The following table lists some of the criteria that you can use to determine whether you should use Silverlight or the XNA Framework for your Windows Phone application. With Windows Phone OS 7.1, you can combine Silverlight and XNA into one application.
For more information about Silverlight and XNA, see
The Silverlight and XNA Frameworks for Windows Phone. For more information about the application platform, see
Application Platform Overview for Windows Phone.
What's New in Windows Phone 8.1
Platform convergence with Windows Store apps
Windows Phone 8.1 introduces an important change in the Windows Phone developer ecosystem. In this release, Windows Phone converges with the Windows Store apps platform into a single developer platform that runs the same types of apps—Windows Runtime apps.
Platform convergence began in Windows Phone 8, which supports a small subset of Windows Runtime APIs, but which differs from Windows in many core areas. In Windows Phone 8.1, there’s so much more in common—a much larger API set, a similar app model
and life cycle, a shared toolset, a common UI framework—Windows Phone and Windows Store app developer platforms truly have become one, single development platform.
Of course there are still some small differences in behavior and supported features between Windows Phone and Windows Store apps. Some of these are the result of timing of the different product cycles, and they may not appear in future releases. Some differences
are the result of the different natures of phones and computers, their sizes, and the way people use them. We encourage developers to think in terms of Windows app development—developing for a single Windows Runtime, but targeting two different platforms on
    phones and computers.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
The section Install missing components has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if AAS won't install normally.

If there is nothing on the disk that is important, by all means erase it and partition it anew with sufficient space for your Windows app. But be warned that you will lose everything on the disk. Investing in iPartition will let you change things again in the future if you need to, without losing any data.
