Wireframe mode in Motion?

I'm working on a project in Motion that involved hundreds of still images and video arranged in a huge collage, to which I'm going to add camera moves and cool stuff like that. The problem is, my pictures are pretty high-res, and so any time I move around in the timeline it takes a long to load everything.
In FCP 6 I can view just the wireframe of clips, which enables me to work with a lot of pics, but I can't find an equivalent in Motion. The only thing I can find is to turn the opacity down to 0. But that won't work for hundreds of pictures, and I also won't be able to see where my pictures are at.
Is there a way to work with just the wireframes in Motion? Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
jesse.

Hey Shawn, just to let you know, I tried your idea about the drop zones, and it works great - especially for my project, because I'm trying to create a wall of pictures that are flipping through about 15 pics a second. I can create the wall with the drop zones and keyframe my animation, then create the clips I need in FCP and simply drop them into the zones.
It definitely beats trying to do it all in Motion with just wireframes. Thanks for the idea.

  • Where is wireframe view mode in Motion 5?

Am I missing something, or is there no way to view, like in Motion 4 or FCP 7, a way to view and manipulate objects in wireframe view.  That way complex actions can be tweaked and viewed back in real time, without the heavy rendering.
Maybe I just can't find the toggle.

I've been through the apple archives for Motion manuals. Could not find a manual for 1.x, but since 2.0 onward, the options for wireframing have been the same: Emitters and Replicators. 3D scene icons are wireframed (that would be since 3.0).
Your speed issues stem from Motion using floating point all the time now. There's no option to use 8-bit (integer) color.
Turn off Field Rendering (docs say it nearly doubles rendering time and it's not necessary for non-broadcast projects) and Frame Blending.
You can also reduce quality and resolution of the canvas (Render > Draft [or Half or Quarter]), but I haven't noticed very much benefit in speed increase by doing this.  You can also use the (Render>) Custom settings and turn everything off or set to lowest quality options. [The benefit of this is that Text quality is also included in the resolution settings.]
Another option is to toggle visibility of layers. Turning off layers you don't immediately need to test an animation will speed things up considerably (depending on the object.)
And lastly: RAM Preview. Set a play range of 2 - 3 seconds worth though, unless you have a huge amount of RAM available. Along with that, shut down all other running apps.

  • Motion in a Black Screen Mode that Won't Esc

I have tried Fn F8, Esc, Cmd-, etc., but I can't navigate away from this full screen mode in motion. At least I htink I am in full screen mode. I have quit the progam and relaunched, and for a split second after the relaunch the other areas of the program will show and then the screen goes black. If I control click, I get the options New group, Impost, Project Preferences. If I select one of those, I believe it is going to that option, but I can't see the new option window open. Please help- this is so frustrating!

  • Ease in/ease out motion panning keyframes

this seems to be very difficult to accomplish. does anyone have a method to do this sucessfully
take photo and pan it from left to right, or up and down, it starts at slow and smooth gets moving (not too fast) and slows down to a beautiful stop at end. i understand you make the move with keyframes and then go to your canvas window and ctrl click to choose "ease in/ease out" - now i would think it would just make a bezier automation like it does with "smooth" for scaling, but it doesnt, it makes the picture bounce or it makes it speed up crazy and stop ubruptly, then i notice you have to grab this second green dot to adjust the velocity but even that doesnt work smoothly either, has anyone mastered this?

    thanks

    Adam,
The best way I've found to work with the Bezier keyframes is to temporarily enlarge the Canvas window in order to see what I'm doing (100% to 200%). With the Canvas window in Image+Wireframe mode, once you've set the Center keyframes you should see the green motion path. When you add the "ease In/Ease Out" you should see the purple Bezier handles overlayed on the green motion path. Notice the two larger purple dots on each Bezier handle; changing the position of the larger purple dots will change the behavior of the easing move.
It will take a little practice and experimentation, but you should be able to learn the relationships between the dot positioning and motion behavior fairly quickly.

  • Problem Rescaling Clips-Blinky Motion

Hi, So I was trying to fit the image in the viewer onto my CRT TV that I am using as an external monitor, and not it is not a broadcast monitor, using the TV safe box. When I use the Scale option of the Motion tab or when I do it manually in Wireframe mode, each one gives me a jerky or blinky video signal. The footage does not need to be rendered once I drop it into the TImeline, and I have tried. Now I suspect that this may be due to the fact that I am using a USB 2.0 External as a scratch disk. Ive been told that this will cause dropped frames. If there is anything else it could be, please let me know.
PS- Just wanted to thank everyone in this forum for making it one of the most helpful tools for someone who is still learning the nuances of FCP. You've all been a great help.

One More thing, I already set my RT mode to Safe, so thats not it.

  • Final Cut Express 4 motion keyframing

I'm thoughly famaliar with FCP6, but haven't seen Final Cut Express since FCE Version 2.
I've been asked to teach FCE4 to a friend, but haven't seen it yet and am trying to prepare.
Is motion keyframing (scaling, cropping) handled the same way in FCE4 as it is in FCP6
(ie. in the motion tab of the Viewer), or do you have to do it in the timeline overlay area?
    Thanks.
    Message was edited by: brvideo

Yes, FCE4 handles keyframing the same way as FCP6. You can do it in the motion tab of the viewer or by clicking the keyframe button in the canvas to add a universal keyframe to all motion parameters. You can do the scaling, cropping, etc. in the motion tab or in the canvas if it is in Image+Wireframe mode.

  • Still photo scaling and motion

I'm editing a series of still photos and can't figure out how to properly scale the photos and add zooms and other motions. Any advice??

To do this in FCP, place the images in the order you want on the Timeline. Double-click one to load it into the Viewer window. Click on the Motion tab, then use the SCALE and CENTER controls to set the animation you want.
Once you set the initial keyframe for an image, FCP will automatically add new keyframes for each change over the duration of the image. Setting the Canvas window to Image+Wireframe mode will allow you to scale and drag the image with the mouse.

  • Motion Tab Settings & Center Point

Working in Final Cut Express HD, I am trying to use wireframes and the motion tab setting to run a series of cropped clips in a "box" in the corner of the screen. I do this by reducing Scale and Crop Left and Right to certain, set values. But since i am cropping different parts of different clips, I need to figure out what the Center Point settings should be for each one so that the "box" is always in the exact same spot on the screen -- even as it cuts from clip to clip inside the box. Using the naked eye to place the frame on a grid is not precise enough...
In other words, if I am cropping 25 off the left in one clip, and 15 left and 10 right on another, I need to know how many "Center Point" coordinates equate to 1 "Crop" point in those Motion Tab settings to make it fit exactly.
Any ideas or help would be GREATLY appreciated! Many thanks.

But doesn't that ONLY work if each and every clip is cropped in exactly the same way? In other words, if a "box" is 50% wide and 100% tall, and i use one clip that takes the left 50% and then use another clip that uses the right 50%...and I want them both to places in the upper left corner of the screen, won't they have different X and Y center points?

  • Motion 3 Bug ****...

I have just been trying to deliver a job, and have been in Motion 3 ****.
Firstly when rendering and setting up new preferences for file type and aspect ratio (Animation, 720 x 576 Pal, Motion Blur on), i can't save the preferences. I try to create a new default and it simply won't let me save, i hit the button, nothing happens.
Next, motion blur is an absolute monster. I've used After Effects for years, and know to be careful with motion blur, but in Motion 3, it turns a 30 second render (of a 8 second project) into a 17 minute render, and introduces random artifacts such as opacity shifts, colour changes, and all sorts of artifacts.
thirdly, i have had to delete all my Fade On behaviours and manually keyframe all my opacity fade ups, as with the behaviour the fade up comes on, then disappears for a split second, then goes to full opacity. This has ruined a batch render of 14 different sequences, adding a day to my deliver time.
Apart from this i've had numerous glitches, crashes and slow downs..
This has not been a good experience and it doesn't look good in convincing my work to do this project in Motion 3.
This is a beta release in my opinion.

    Heya,
There is no "realtime" aspect (a la FCP's RT mode) in Motion. All rendering (on screen, to disk, whatever) is done on the GPU. The CPU gets used to do calculations for the simulations (particles, behaviors, etc), but all image processing is done on the GPU. It's not a software renderer like AE.
As for the motion blur: Motion doesn't have per-object motion blur, it's full-scene blur like in many 3D renderers. When you enable motion blur, the default is eight samples, which means that Motion is rendering the scene eight times for each resulting frame. So if you've already got something that's expensive to render, it's gonna get almost an order of magnitude slower when motion blurred.

  • How to make a trasnparent background in Motion

I am just making a Lower Third and I want to be able to bring it into FCP and place it on top of my existing timeline. I dont want to export FCP to Motion because I already chroma keyed my "stuff" in FCP. How do I make a transparent background for Motion? Hm!! Any other suggestions would be nice too !

I think you may be mis-interpreting what the blend mode does.
If you apply the screen blend mode to the fire clip in Motion without anything below it, and view transparent in the viewer, you'll notice that the blacks in the fire clip don't disappear. It's waiting to blend it's values with a clip below it. If no clip is below it, then nothing visual happens. If you place a colored solid below, then you'll see the effect of the blend mode.
FCP handles composite modes differently. If you do the same thing in FCP, the blacks WILL disappear from the fire clip even though there is nothing below it. Perhaps that is why they are called "composite" modes in FCP, and "blend" modes in Motion.
Finally, a Motion clip is like a QT clip. It can contain, video, audio, tc, and transparency info. A blend mode is not technically transparency information. Besides, in the example that you give me, the blend is between the fire and the text clip. Not between the motion project file and FCP clip in the timeline.
How ever the Motion project looks in Motion is how it'll look in FCP (with the exception of Motion Blur).

  • What does MPEG2 cut off (Wireframe)?

I am going to be exporting a project to MPEG2 to use for a promotional DVD. I wondered, what part of what is showing in FCP is going to be "chopped off" when exported? I am viewing the project in Image+Wireframe mode, and there are two blue boxes, one of which I am assuming the MPEG2 file will cut off at. Thanks!

Every television is different as to actually how much of the picture area will be shown. Most professional monitors have the ability to show "underscan" or "full raster," that is: everything. But when it comes to normal televisions, particularly tube (or crt) televisions, most televisions will show everything in the "picture safe" area and supposedly all televisions will show everything in the "title safe" area. This is because the picture in early television tubes would shrink over time. To avoid having black areas around the picture the actual electronic image was larger than what showed up on most picture tubes.

  • Wireframe green lines wreaking havoc

when doing a text slide I'm running into trouble with the green lines that are on the perimeter of the wireframe mode - they cut off the text. I've done about 50 text boxes in various projects and I don't remember having this problem. does anyone know what this is? is there something I have turned on that I should turn off?
    Thank you!

I'm trying to understand what's happening here. Is the text extending beyond the edge of the screen? Are you using a return to wrap the text? Maybe you could put up a picture somewhere of what's happening on your screen.

  • Quick way to cycle through blend modes

Greetings all, just a wonder at something that has been on my mind regarding blend modes in motion. Is there any way to cycle through them without having to click singularly on each individual one? An example of what I mean is like Photoshop's keyboard shortcut of (Shift-Opt with + or -). Huge time saver if anyone has information on this.
    Cheers - m

    Thanks for the reply,
yeah... that's what i've been doing but thought to finally put the question out there thinking that someone may know. Seems strange, would have thought there would be a quicker way which would really help while previewing composites.
    Hopefully somebody knows something.
    Cheers mate - m

  • Comcast does not monitor motion sensors

Motion sensor sets off alarm and it registers the intrusion with Comcast and is visible on the web portal, but Comcast advises me that motion sensors are not monitored. Stacy with Comcast Home Security advises me that the only time their system will protect me from an intruder is if the intruder enters my house by the way of a door or window with a sensor installed on it. The installers advised me differently and I never would have purchased service or a system from a company that does not have the capabilities to monitor the motion sensors. I certainly wouldn’t by motion sensors that are ineffective. I asked to speak to supervisor for clarification, but after 45 minutes on the phone I gave up. I’m filing a complaint with the Washington State Attorney General’s office for fraud and want a full refund for my alarm costs.

the motion sensors are most certainly monitored by comcast. however the motion sensor is only active when in the arm away mode. when in arm stay or arm night modes the motion sensor is not active, however

  • New development with time remap tool

It turns out my time remap tool works just fine in other projects just not this one. I do have alot of still shots with some motion graphics which is starting to extend my render times extensively. My question is, how do I solve this rendering time problem? Is there a way manage rendered footage better? Compress it? I'm new to this motion graphics and would appreciate any help.
    thanx
    John

    John,
Keyframing smooth moves takes a little bit of practice and a BIG Canvas window to really see what you're doing. You'll be using the Canvas window and the Motion tab of the Viewer window a lot for this.
Once you have the Canvas window up-sized (but still keep it at "Fit to Window" or smaller), set it to Image+Wireframe mode. When you click on or highlight a clip in the Timeline, you should see the Wireframe for that clip in the Canvas window (as long as the playhead remains over that clip). But first, double click a clip in the Timeline to load it into the Viewer window then open the Motion tab.
Depending on what you want to do, you can approach most keyframed motion tasks two ways; move the Wireframe in the Canvas window, or enter values in the Viewer window. I usually do a bit of both.
When you set a keyframe that shows up as a green dot (Scale, Rotation, Crop, Opacity, etc), you can right-click on that keyframe and select "Smooth" from the contextual menu. You'll see the purple bezier handles added to the keyframe. You can leave them as they are, or you can move those handles to manipulate the desired action. But for items like the Center control (black dot keyframe), you don't have this option in the Viewer window. Say you want to move the center point over the duration of the clip. Set the beginning and ending keyframe - or just set the beginning keyframe then move the playhead to the end point and manually drag the Wireframe in the Canvas window to the new location and FCP will automatically add a new keyframe. You should now see the path of the clip shown in the Canvas window displayed as dotted line. Right-click on the end or beginning keyframe and select "Ease In/Ease Out" from the contextual menu. Now you should see the same purple bezier handles added. Again, you can use the handles to smooth out movement, or slow down or accelerate a clip (by extending or shortening the length of the handle). If you have a multiple keyframed motion path, you can make wonderfully smooth curves with the bezier handles.
For more info, look up Bezier in the user's manual, or better yet, go to Amazon.com and buy Kevin Monahan's book; "Motion Graphics and Effects in Final Cut Pro."
