Wireless card hardware failure or something else?

I've been using Arch quite merrily on my desktop for 1.5 years, but just recently my wireless card failed to work correctly after a reboot.
Here is the output lspci shows for the card:
04:00.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe
Subsystem: Ralink corp. RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe

Memory at f7d00000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [50] MSI: Enable- Count=1/32 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [70] Express Endpoint, MSI 00

Capabilities: [140] Device Serial Number 00-00-4d-1e-fb-2a-02-48
Kernel driver in use: rt2800pci

Here is the output of netcfg when the card fails to work:
:: home2 up Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant

(ip and ifconfig similarly fail to set the card up)
And here is a relevant section of dmesg output:

(The "rt2800_wait_wpdma_ready: Error - WPDMA TX/RX busy" messages appear when I try to use the card with netcfg or ip or whatever.)
If you want to see the earlier bits of my dmesg output, here is a complete log: http://sprunge.us/gWOJ. It's from a different boot, but the error messages at the end are the same.
Anyway, when this first happened, I googled around after the errors in hope of finding someone else with the same problem (not much luck there), and also looked up my wireless card in the wiki. I ended up trying out the rt3090-dkms driver from the AUR as suggested here (and yes, I followed all the directions). The rt3090 driver actually allowed me to set the card up manually, and I could send and receive pings, but if I tried to use the connection for something more interesting like loading a webpage, it caused the whole system to crash.
After a while of messing around with this stuff, I found out that occasionally the card works perfectly fine after a reboot (using the standard rt2800 drivers -- I uninstalled the rt3090 one). I can't find anything that's particularly different from one reboot to the next, but the card seems to work after about 35% of reboots. The irregularity of it all has me wondering if it's a hardware problem. Is there an easy way to know if it's a hardware problem or not? I'm pretty much stuck, so any insights on this issue are greatly appreciated

Here is some module info.

Also possibly relevant: at the same time my wireless card starting giving me issues, my SD card reader module stopped loading. It seems the driver was renamed from rt5139 to rtsx_usb_sdmmc in Linux 3.16. I now have to load it manually on boot. I doubt the problem is directly related, but maybe it is indicative of a general module issue?

  • Drive failure or something else

I'm helping a friend diagnose his computer. He has a Power Mac G4 MDD, 1 GHz processor, 1.25 GB RAM, OS X 10.4.11. This computer is used for music production and has two internally mounted hard drives - the Mac HD and a Seagate Barracuda. Recently he has been having trouble booting up the computer. Sometimes when it's booting up it doesn't find the system files (blue screen / folder with ? in it). Other times it makes it to the gray screen with the progress "wheel" and will freeze. Sometimes it boots up properly but the Seagate drive doesn't mount. I've tried using Disc Utility and Tech Tool Pro to try to recover/repair the Seagate but it never shows up as a volume. Today when I tried to boot the computer it couldn't see the system files, so I booted it from the Tiger install disc. I went through the install procedures to see which drives it might recognize to install Tiger to and it didn't see either the Mac or Seagate drives. I restarted the computer and it booted from the Mac HD properly but still didn't see the Seagate. I have tried switching the power and ribbon connectors but the Seagate drive never mounts. I would assume it's a dead drive, but the missing system files thing makes me think otherwise.
My next step is going to be to remove the drive and install it into a friend's G4 tower to see if it will mount on his computer. Unfortunately he is out of town until Friday, so it will be a few days before I can do this. Any other ideas out there as to what I should check? I talked to a local Apple tech today and he suggested checking the jumper settings on the drives (master/slave settings), but I'm not exactly sure what I should be looking for. There was a port in between the power and ribbon ports that had 8 pins. It looked like there was a jumper on two of the pins. It looked the same on both drives but again, I'm not sure what to be looking for.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.
Tonight I went back over to my friend's house to troubleshoot his system further. I borrowed a friend's SATA/IDE to USB adapter to see if we could get the drives to mount on his son's MacBook. I pulled both the Mac HD and the Seagate drive out of the G4. I connected the Seagate drive to the adapter and the MacBook, powered up the Seagate and heard spinning of the drive and... clicking. Not good. Eventually it would stop spinning and never mount on the MacBook. I'm now assuming this drive is dead.
Next, for kicks, I connected the Mac HD to the adapter, connected to the MacBook, turned on the power and it would not spin up at all. Cycled the power several times and still no spinning. After about 30 mins or so, I cycled the power again - this time the drive started spinning. Still, it never mounted to the MacBook. I was beginning to think that this drive was beginning to fail. I went ahead and reinstalled the Mac HD back into the G4 and powered it up. It booted up normally. I'm not sure what to think about this. My gut is that if it wouldn't spin up before that the drive is on it's way out.
Do we have 2 bad/dead hard drives? I'm thinking we just need to buy two new internal hard drives - one for the system and one for the music production. He has an external FW drive that he is going to use as a backup to the new audio only drive.
BTW - the jumpers were set correctly to Cable Select.

It didn't come with a wireless card.
This is something I'd definitely like to add.
Does anybody know which ones are supported by H515s ?

    Hi a,
    http://www.mctiviausa.com/
There has been "talk" on and off of Apple TV doing it (and people have done it with a hack), but I haven't really followed it.
It would be a whole lot cheaper getting an adapter (as needed) and cable and simply pluggin it in when you're in the kitchen.

If AT&T authorized the unlock and it was succcessfully completed, then you should be able to use your iPhone with any cell carrier in the Philippines that offers compatible GSM service. You'll need to get a SIM from that carrier.
    Regards.

  • Something Strange happens in my wireless card

i have a wireless card in my laptop. But,something strange happens. And i'm really confused:(.
    lspci | grep BCM43
    and i got:
    04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
    then type:
    lspci -vnn | grep 14e4
    i got:
    04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01)
06:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5787M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express [14e4:1693] (rev 02)
so, i think the "Broadcom BCM4312"page in archwiki(ie.http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_BCM4312)may help.so i just do as the wiki page.
after that,i use Wicd to manage them.
it seems evrything is ok:D. the wireless card was marked with  "eth1",and the previous "eth0".
but, something strange happens: after  i reboot my laptop, then ,they exchange their "names"! the strangest thing is that it seems to happen randomly!
for example, nothing happened since the day before yesterday.but.this morning, they changed
and this is the "MODULE" line in my rc.conf:
MODULES=(acpi-cpufreq cpufreq_ondemand !ssb lib80211-crypt_tkip wl !b43  vboxdrv vboxnetflt vboxnetadp !vboxadd !vboxvfs)
    so,any advice?

    Notes on trying out netcfg:
    - install netcfg: pacman -S netcfg
    - set up a profile file in /etc/networks.d (copy a file from /etc/networks.d/examples and edit it)
    - add the name of the profile file to NETWORKS=() in /etc/rc.conf
    - add '@net-profiles' to DAEMONS=() in /etc/rc.conf (put it after 'network',  prefixed with '@' so you don't have to wait for the network just to log in)
    - remove the name of your interface that you want netcfg to set up from INTERFACES=() in /etc/rc.conf (so it doesn't try to set it up twice)
    - also turn off whatever other network configuration daemon, like wicd, you might have been using.

  • I bought an Apple TV but my HDTV has only one HDMI outlet.  What do I need to operate the Apple TV and my Uverse wireless network. I bought a four outlet hub at Best Buy but I can't't figure it out. Do I need something else?

I bought an apple TV but my TV has only oine HDMI outlet, so I have to unplug it when I want to watch regular TV. I bought a four plug hub at Bestbuy but can't get it to work.
Is there something else I can use?

hdmi spillers and switches are hit or miss some work some don't

  • [SOLVED] Broadcom wireless card behaving very strangely

My wireless card has become unusable in an obscure fashion after a reboot. It may have been due to the recent kernel update, but I rebooted once after that update and the card was fine, so I'm not sure. Wireless was working without a hitch for months before this.
    I have a Macbook Pro 9,1 with a Broadcom BCM4331 wireless card. I use the b43 firmware.
The firmware is being loaded on boot, but that vague "link is not ready" error appears every time the system attempts to load the firmware:

When I try to use netctl to connect to my home network, I get the same error:

If I scan for networks using iw dev wlp3s0 scan, I get no output. Here's the debug output from that if it means anything to anyone—from the docs on netlink I read it doesn't seem to show anything unusual:

If I try to use wpa-supplicant, it will say "Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant" as if it had properly made a connection, but it hasn't. Running iw dev wlp3s0 link will show that the card isn't connected to anything, and of course the internet still doesn't work.
I know it's not a hardware problem because the wireless works fine in Mac OS.
What gives? Is there a way I can investigate this further? It seems like a driver and/or kernel issue but I'm not really sure how to nail that down with confidence. I couldn't find any reports in the kernel bug tracker about this or anything, so maybe it's just me and I'm doing something wrong.
    Thanks!

    Yay, that worked!
I guess I really should've tried that initially, huh? Since the wiki said not to use it unless you had an unsupported wireless card, I figured I shouldn't (b43 officially supports mine). Still, considering that it's easy to install/uninstall drivers, my caution was obviously unwarranted.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Wireless-Card doesn't not work with WPA/WPA2 but with WEP [Solved]

Hello I have a MacBook (late 2007) with a wireless-card from Broadcam, the card works with WEP and the classic configuration over rc.conf very well. But I can't get the card running with WPA and the net network-profiles.
Here is the link to the driver - http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

  • PCI-e wireless card causes lock ups Z87 MPower MAX

I've already asked this question once, but was part of an epic essay that I've decided to break down into smaller more manageable chunks (as unsurprisingly that one got no replies).
I've got an ASUS PCE-A66 wireless ac pci-e card. Had absolutely no issues with it in my old Z77 board, but I seem to be having a lot of issues with it in my new Z87 MPower MAX. System was locking up like mad when I was trying to install the drivers at first. Had to rip out the WiFi/Bluetooth/WiDi module to get the drivers installed but the system randomly hangs on boot up? Don't get the issues with the card unplugged and don't always get it with it plugged in, but there seems to be some form of conflict with it that I can't resolve. Has anyone else had any such issues with any PCI-e add in cards on this motherboard?
    Specs are:
    i7 4770k
MSI MPower MAX using .128 bios (will try the .131 later)
    2x4GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 2400
    Coolermaster Silent Pro Hybrid 1050w
EVGA NVidia GTX 780 SC ACX
    Windows 8 Pro 64bit

Yes, old system was Win8 Pro 64 bit too and the drivers are Windows 8 certified. As I say though, I had no issues with it on the old build? Even got a replacement sent out by Amazon in case the card itself was damaged  Did initially try to do a warm update of the hardware into the same OS installation but didn't play well so did a full re-install in the end. Tried standard and UEFI installs (just in case) and after a problem with my OCZ Vector 2 not being recognised I bought a new Samsung 840 Pro so was a virgin SSD installed on to as well.
I'll raise it directly with MSI but just wanted to know if anyone else had experienced anything similar with any wireless cards in this mobo.
    Cheers for the reply though

  • MBP having Kernel Panic (Crash) all the time due to Wireless card firmware.

    Hi all,
I am desperately needing helps from the experts here now. I have the latest santa rosa Macbook Pro. It has been crashing on me lately due to the wireless card firmware. I have run all the latest updates from software update including the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I have tried to reformat the hard drive and installed a fresh and clean Mac OSX. The crash still persists before AND after the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I mean I was not having this issue when I first bought the computer while others were whining all over the internet about this problem. When the fix came out, everyone
s problems seem to be solved but my problem arose . A recent Kernel panic crash log is as following:

    Thank you
    Have a nice day.

i would try this in a test user to see if the issue occurs (more than likely it will)also i would reset the smc and the pram
(test user) go to the apple then system preferences then accounts then in the bottom right hand corner you will see there is a lock click it and put in the password for the computer then click ok then click the plus sign and create the test user make sure that you check the box that says allow user to admin the account then click create account (if a message says something about automatic login click keep) then click the apple and log out then login to the other user.
(smc) you shut the computer down then you unplugg all the cables from the computer then you take the battery out with the battery out you hold the power button down for five seconds then you put the battery back then plug in the ac adapter then start the comptuer up and then plug everything else back in
(pram) you restart the computer holding down the apple option P and R keys till you hear the start up chime twice
if that does not work i would boot to the install disk one holding c and then click utilites from the top and select the mac hd and then verify disk and repair disk
if the issue still occurs then i would back all of the information on the computer up and erase and install
    hope this helps

could the launch agents failing slow the computer or they just don't work. I mean I am willing to upgrade ram but not if there is good chance it won't change speed much. Also to downgrade is it necessary to format the hard drive?

  • What wireless card do I put in my HP PAVILION DV6748US ENTERTAINMENT NOTEBOOK PC? Have 2 options.

I need to replace the wireless card in my notebook but I don't know which to choose. There's the Broadcom 4311AG Wireless LAN 802.11a/b/g mini PCI adapter card(Bevo) - 54Mbps data rate, 2.4GHz operating frequency range -  For Rest of World (ROW) or the Broadcom 4321AGN 802.11a/b/g/draft-n mini-PCI adapter card - For Most of the world MOW. I don't know which one to pick.

It is a standard laptop 2.5 inch wide SATA hard drive like shown in this picture:
Look at Page 9 of this Manual:
    Drive Manual
This will show how to replace it. Do you have the recovery disks that you could have made when the laptop was new? If not you are going to have to get a Windows disk or some HP recovery disks.
Here is a drive that would work for you.
    160 gig 7200 rpm drive for $45
This drive will be faster than what you had and is a bit larger. A very good deal for the price. You perhaps already have a second hard drive in the system. See the manual on page 9 for the location of both hard drive bays. You could move the secondary drive (if there is one) over into the primary position without spending a nickel. In fact, that is a great idea. If you do that and still get the BSOD, then it might well be something else going on other than the hard drive. The hard drive is a likely issue but it could also be the memory and other things, too. However, I think the second drive is only found in the dx9000 models so do not be shocked if you do not have a secondary hard drive bay in your machine. I have never seen a dx6000 series but am pretty sure it is a lot like the dv6000 series of which I have seen more than my share. They have a lot of issues and I am concerned you will be spending money on a new hard drive that will not fix anything.
Feel free to post back with issues or questions.

  • Help With Third Party Wireless Cards

Hello, I am needing some help with third party wireless cards. I have purchased and installed the Linksys WMP54G wireless PCI card into my G4. From what ive seen on the discussions page here, this card is known to work with the G4s in place of the more expensive Airport Extreme card. The only problem is that my G4 doesnt even recognize that the card is in the PCI slot. Ive tryed the other PCI slots and still nothing. Previously, i have tried using a belkin and a d-link card that have been known to work in the G4s as well, and had the same problem. I am 100% sure that the card is seated correctly, and cant think of any other reason why it shouldnt detect that something is in the slot. If anyone can inform me what im doing wrong, or has any info on how to get it working, that would be great. Thanks for your time,
    ~Jared
Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   2 gb ram, 200 gb hd, dual display

Yes, i run Digidesigns audio editing program called Protools on my Mac. It uses a PCI card to import mic/line audio signals into the program from the hardware interface. I tried moving the Digidesign card and putting the wireless card in the same slot, and still nothing, although the Digidesign card works fine in the other slots. Each time i moved the Digidesign card, it showed up in the different slots, although the ones that were open did not show up at all. Only the PCI slots that are in use show up in ASP on my machine. I have the FW-800 version of the G4, so im not sure if that makes any difference. I have never erased the PRAM before, would you be able to give me directions on how to do that? Thanks a ton for your help. =)

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at
    http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.
