Wish: annotate workflow with separator, comment or color-coding

I've been developing a Finder workflow that has grown to 23 steps, and more are coming.
The workflow is broken up into segments to 2-4 actions each. I've customized the action names and collapsed each segment in order to better see the overall sequence.
The problem is the segments visually run together. If this were a programming language, I'd visually set off the first action of each segment with a blank line or a comment. I'd like to do the same with my workflows.
The thoughts that come to mind are a visual separator, a workflow comment, colored action names, and color-coding (a la Finder labels). I like coloring best because it doesn't take vertical space (a critical Automator resource).
[I submitted this as formal Feedback - Design/Ease of Use.]

Thanks, lc55, for contributing to this thread.
You could structure the workflow like a regular
program with a main workflow calling subsidiary
workflows ....
That might add clarity to my long scripts, but at the expense of numerous small files, which seems like trading one problem for another.
Here again, conventional programming provide an excellent model to follow, with a main routine and a collection of subroutines in a SINGLE file.

  • Best color workflow with hdv source material?

    Hi,
    I am wondering about the best workflow for working with hdv material in color?
    My first Color experience, I sent a AIC timeline (hdv source) to color, made my corrections, clicked NO when sending back to fcp when asked if I wanted the rendered timeline to be conformed to color render settings (apple pro-res) as I wanted the same sequence settings back in fcp.
    I then tried to off/online back to my source hdv capture files, and therein arose the problems. Because color had renamed the files, the new names came up in the re-connect media window, not the hdv source. When ignoring these and locating the hdv source, the corrections were not attached.
    After advice, tried onlining the original, locked edit, opening in color - files came up red (offline?), but could not apply the grades from the previous project anyway, as the whole program crashed before I could do anything?
    Thoughts on workflow, theories on what I may have done wrong greatly appreciated.
    Lastly, a lot of noise appeared in some clips I adjusted in color, which did not occur when making similar corrections to the same clips using the 3-way color corrector within fcp itself.
    How come?
    Thanks for listening,
    -Tom

    Hi Tom, agree 100% with all of JP OWENS comments on this thread. This is very good advice.
    Myself, coming from the dark side of a SONY HDV (HVR-Z1P) and DUMPING the SONY for a Panasonic DVCPROHD HVX-200 iFRAME HD format 66mbs and 110Mbs DVCPROHD 4:2:2 CODEC was primarily because when using COLOR on the HDV it was as dreadful as JP OWENS says it is.
    As as has been mentioned in this thread, for working with HDV and trying to perform any reasonable grading using color.app you would indeed move it all to  PRORES422 by either:
    • ingesting it as proposed from the source as APPLE PRORES 422 or
    • ingesting and then BATCH CONVERTING in FCP (or go via a COMPRESSOR.app DROPLET - a favourite of mine) and THEN importing that into FCP.
    It gives you these workflow advantages (again pointed out by Mr Owens):
    • iFRAME format editing in FCP is "faster" (not GoPs to play with in 25Mbs MPEG2 HDV)) and
    • workflow transcoding is faster. (many threads in these forums concerning exporting from an HDV timeline).
    However to roughly quote Stu Maschwitz (his DV REBEL book) "+..converting DV to a near loss-less codec is a bit like carrying a golf ball around in a streamer trunk+".. applying this to HDV as well simply meaning that there is also NOT much colour information to work with in grading.correction applications like color.app.
    Thus there is NO colour benefit from working in prores 422 from HDV source.
    IN short, work in PRORES422 from your HDV source and your workflow will improve and efficiencies will be seen.

  • Styles (nested?) in Long Document with Color Coded Sections

    Hi, I am looking for a solid style set-up for a document with seven color coded sections. The character, paragraph, table styles, etc. will be used throughout the book, but several of them (chapter headers, bold color, table strokes) will shift colors from section to section. What is the best way to set this up so I can still make other changes to the styles without having to edit each colored section separately.
    Thanks in advance,
    Marshall

    In practice, I'm having rouble making this work.
    I have one swatched, named "Section Color" and if I change the definition or CMYK recipie of that color it will ripple instantly through the styles( as you said,) I have swatches unchecked from the Syncronize Options, but upon syncing it still rewrites that CMYK recipie back to the style source's and all colors ripple back.
    It's not hard to reset one color for each section, but id like to know why it's changing swatches with swatches unchecked. Is it writing that color from the paragraph or other styles which ARE set to sync?

  • Export PDF Workflow with Applescript and CS3

    Hello,
    I am setting up some PDF workflow with Applescript.
    On a given moment, as my script runs and after getting some user-input answers to questions in some dialogs, my script tells InDesign CS3 to open the Export Adobe PDF window for the current document. I copied and pasted that small part of the script:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
    tell document 1
    export format PDF type to "Macintosh_HD:Test01.pdf" using "somePreset" with showing options
    end tell
    end tell
    When you run this small part of my Applescript, InDesign opens the Export Adobe PDF window (as expected) waiting for me to click on "Export". That is exactly what I want, since the user is given here a last opportunity to change some values (for example page range, or spreads). When all is set, the user can click on Export to close the dialog and finish the script.
    Problem: I was hoping that the Adobe PDF Preset "somePreset" would be selected in the first pull-down menu of the Export Adobe PDF window when this window is opened by the script. Unfortunately the last used preset is always selected by default. Anyone suggestions or help?
    Kind regards,
    Bertus Bolknak.

    My operators enter the page range and filename into a dialog box. Then I set those in the script. I use the Press Quality preset to start with and then set the changes I want into a export variable. I set things like bleed, marks, page range, etc.
    Here is an example:
    set theProps to properties of PDF export preset "[Press Quality]"
    try
    delete PDF export preset "Schmidt PDF"
    end try
    set theStyle to {name:"Schmidt PDF", acrobat compatibility:acrobat 7, bleed top:"0.125i", bleed bottom:"0.125i", bleed inside:"0.125i", bleed outside:"0.125i", page marks offset:"0.125i", include ICC profiles:Include None, effective PDF destination profile:use no profile, effective PDF X profile:"No Color Conversion"} & theProps
    make PDF export preset with properties theStyle
    set properties of PDF export preferences to theStyle
    set color bitmap sampling of PDF export preferences to none
    set grayscale bitmap sampling of PDF export preferences to none
    set page range of PDF export preferences to (item i of myPageList) as string
    export document 1 format PDF type to (PrinergyFolder & myJobNumFinal & "_" & VerCode & ".pdf") as Unicode text without showing options
    I am also doing this in Quark.

  • Changing Comment's Color

    Hi everyone
    Im using iweb 08 (haven't had a chance to upgrade since i formatted to 09)
    Anyway i made a site in iWeb 08 and uploaded to MobileMe with the comment system turned on
    How can i chance the color of the comments? I have a dark blue background on my website so the black font of the comments app that mobile me supplies is making my comments very hard to see
    I would use a light background for the comments area but i am unable to make it dynamically chance size when a new comment is added (ie: i must go to iweb and increase the background box size once a new comment is submitted which i dont want)
    Does anyone know how to chance the comment color? Im trying to get a white font color
    Editing the HTML etc is not an option because im using MobileMe
    Thanks
    MT

    you can change blog comments' font style and color in several ways:
    1) modify template xml file, not recommended unless you know iweb xml schema.
    2) post edit the blog css file, open blog css file with a text editor and search for .Comment_ , change settings for all found instance... this needs to be done after every publishing, so save a copy of the modified css file for future uses; that would save you time.
    3) with javascript, this requires javascript, css and how iweb assigns widgets... upside is you only need to copy+paste html snippet when you add new blog entry (no post editing).

  • How to deal with transparency, variable background color and unsightly edges?

    I am a software developer, only know the Photoshop basics.
    A graphic professional designed for me an icon with transparent background. On some backgrounds it looks fine, but on other backgrounds the edges look bad. I read an Internet article that the problem is that the pixels should merge smoothly into the background. I understand how that workd provided that the background is a known constant (in math terms). My program may run on different versions of Windows, with different window styles (Classic Look, XP Look) and hence the backgrounds are variable.
    How can an icon be designed so it blends smoothly into a background whose color is not known at design time?
    TIA,
    -Ramon

    What version of Windows? If you are just using Vista and W7, you can use 24bit PNGs with proper Alpha channels as your icon resource. I think they prefer straight Alpha, but you may laso be able to use black or medium grey on the RGB channels hen it's premultiplied. (there's a guide somewhere on MS' developers' pages). For XP you are of course stuck with palette-based BMPs/ ICOs, which is no different than when creating GIFs or 8bit PNGs in PS. Generally, though, you may wish to work with a dedicated editor like Axialis Icon Workshop, especially when needing to create multiple versions of an icon. The rest is out of your hands. Some icons will always look frizzled, if the user applies an all too wild color scheme. It's just how it is....

  • Change Comment background color?

    Is it possible to change the background of a comment? We have multiple people editing and commenting on a document and having different color comments for each user would make things much easier...

    It appears only corrections can be color coded by different users (also must be on different machines or logged in as a different User, or otherwise change Author in Preferences). Comments are all one color, but carry Author's ID (along with Date and Time stamp).

  • Workflow for Green Screen Multicam, Color Correction. (CC 2014)

    Hi
    What is the best workflow to do a music video shot with 7 cameras (each with 4 takes) on a green screen which would also include green screen stills.
    All shot with Consumer Grade cameras at 1920/1080 at the highest resolution (I think 30 fps)
    The way I am going about is not efficient.
    My tasks are:
    Key each 20 minute clip (to get about 2 usable minutes)
    Rotate my DSLR video (shot in landscape so I could take stills as well)
    Color correct all clips
    Create a new cleaned up movie for each clip including: Proper format. Keyed with new background, Color Corrected, Re-encoded as a new movie, Re-imported as 7 new movies, begin to edit.
    I was watching some movies about pasting attributes which look helpful and also about nesting sequences which looks like it could save time.
    What is the best workflow steps to do all this? Am I going about it the right way by creating new movie clips which are keyed with a new background, color corrected, and reencoded including all the garbage footage? Then create a new multicam project to edit the cleaned up footage?
    HELP!

    Temporary solution for this was "export xml" after all. I had to disable all graphics and textlayers and delete colorcorrections, and flatten multicam, so i had to redo all grading ja graphics stuff in older premiere after importin FCP xml. But got the work done in time. Won't use cc 2014 in near future unless someone figures out what is wrong with green frames. (well actually now im exporting from older AME, will she if the green frames pops out there too, wouldn't be too much surprised....)

  • Workflow with DNG/Proxies at Premiere to AE

    Hi guys
    Sorry for my English. What's the problem -  How to organize available workflow with dng?
    I work with DNG sequences, I do a proxy in AE. I edit of these proxies in Premiere. Then import of the project to AE for color grading, vfx and others. But for this purpose I need to replace a proxy with DNG originals. I am able to do it through Replace Footage - and it isn't so difficult, but there is an opportunity somehow to automate process?

    Ok thanks, that helps me quite a bit. The footage is all numbered sequentially so Im not mixing it up (9x1 hour blocks), but the framerates could be causing the problem. If the imported footage is HD 1440x1080 @ 25fps in Premiere, I have created a new project also set at HDV1080i 25 (50i) and imported the timeline. I then save this and import to AE, but am still getting the same problem. I know that Ive done the process backwards (premiere then AE), but out of curiosity, can you yourself get premiere transitions to work in AE? Cause I might ask adobe for new install discs if you can.
    Cheers

  • Much faster SpeedGrade workflow with new 7.1 update

    Thanks Adobe team, with this new upgrade, it is much easier to open Premiere Pro timelines in SpeedGrade and get started.
    Ever since SpeedGrade came out, I always considered it as a great tool for the future, but never felt it was "ready" until this new 7.1 upgrade.  It has always been a very powerful colour grading tool, but you had to convert your video files which would take forever on my computer.  I tried converting a 2 minute video in the beginning, and it gave me an 8 hour estimate, so I just clicked cancelled.
    Thankfully Adobe fixed that, and you can now natively open Adobe Premiere Pro timelines right into Adobe SpeedGrade, and skip the conversion.  It now takes a few seconds to open a timeline in SpeedGrade, and about 2 seconds to save the results once you're done.  After that, you're all set to open Adobe Premiere and compose the output of your video.
    This gives you quick and easy access to a very powerful color correction tool, and is included in the Adobe Creative Cloud membership.
    In this video, I show the new and improved workflow for Adobe SpeedGrade which now allows you to very quickly color grade your projects to improve the colours.
    http://www.studiojpic.com/adobe-speedgrade-cc-7-1-new-and-improved-workflow-with-october-2 013-update/

    Yeah, I'm just going to go ahead and agree with you guys on this.
    Super easy workflow.  No workarounds or anything.  And you don't have to have a ridiculously spec'd system to playback your footage!  It almost feels like I'm cheating.
    Don't get me wrong, there are still a ton of things I have on the wishlist (curves, interface options, better scopes, better tracking for masks), but this was the HUGE number one item.  I'm sure everything else will improve in time.  It's just great to see that Patrick and his team are working hard to make these improvements for all of us.

  • Single step workflow with multiple approvers (without using a group)

    Hi,
    is it possible to have a single step workflow with multiple approvers without using a group? This is for a contract document.
    i want to add a number of users based on particular logic. The approvers are random and do not belong to any particular group.
    DO let me know if it is possible or if any of you have done that.
    thanks in advance.
    regards,
    rubio

    Hi Rubio,
    I believe the behavior would be, if individual users are added as approvers then the system would require each approver to approve the document. However, if you use the user group, you could set the role so that it would be either ALL or ANY.

  • Printing problem with Summarize Comments?

    Printing problem with Summarize Comments in Pro 10.1.6? When I print, I only get the number boxes on one page and the comments on the next page. The numbered boxes don't show up on the actual image itself.

    Um I dont know if im doing something daft but I tried this like you said
    PrinterJob printJob = PrinterJob.getPrinterJob();
    printJob.setPrintable(this);
    if(printJob.printDialog()){
    try {
              PageFormat pageFormat = printJob.defaultPage();
              if (pageFormat.getOrientation() == PageFormat.PORTRAIT) {
              landscape = 0;} else {
                   landscape = 1;}
              System.out.println("THE ORIENTATION IS "+ landscape);
              printJob.print(); }
    catch (Exception PrinterExeption) { PrinterExeption.printStackTrace();}
    and it doesnt seem to work as I tried it both as landscape and portrait in the print dialog but landscape is always 0.
