With MPLS - No Fragmantation with MTU Size 1501-1504

Ping with MTU 1500 and 1505 is OK.
Ping with MTU 1501-1504 doesn?t work - there is no fragmantation done.
This occures on a Cisco7200 and Cisco7500 where traffic is sended via a labeld switch path: MTU-Size from the Fast/Gig Eth-Interface is set to 1500. With no MPLS "no mpls ip" everthing works fine.
Does anyone have a solution for this?
Thanks and Regards
Erich

Hello,
did you configure "mpls mtu 1512" on all MPLS enabled interfaces? F.e.:
interface FastEthernet0/0/0
mpls mtu 1512
This would allow for as much as 3 labels.
There is no fragmentation for labeled packets, only for IP. So this could be a software/hardware bug as well.
Hope this helps! Please rate all posts.

  • IPv4 Backbone Baby Jumbo MTU size - any adverse effect?

    Hello.
Is there any complication or adverse effect, setting IPv4/MPLS backbone GE link MTU size bigger than the Ethernet De facto of 1500, in the ASR9000 IOX-XR 4.3.x? What would be practical size? 4470, 8192? We have customers request to set 1800 but too odd value. What is the value the ASR9K (Trident LC with RSP, not 440) and LCs supports?
    Much appreciate for your support.
    Thanks,
    Intopian.

That is correct Won, there are other advantages also as you noted.
    For routing protocols:
OSPF uses it to fill its DBD's do both sides need to ahve the same MTU size,
    same applies to ISIS.
RIP doesnt really care, although it can pack more updates in a single packet
BGP, using TCP, will use the MTU to adjust its MSS value so BGP benefits from this also big time.
As for delay on voip, yes theoretically, if the link speed is low enough, serialization delay of a large mtu packet may induce jitter on the high priority voip packet. But with 1500 bytes, the "fragment" size should be adjusted at 750k (so half T1 speed) only. With the majority circuits operating now at 1G, 10G etc, this fragment size requirement is almost no longer there as the serialization delay is so low at these speeds.
Other then very low end CPE's or very old devices that dont like larger MTU's (eg very old PA's in the 7200) there is really no worry anymore increasing the MTU size.
I dont think there is a formal doc on this, but I am sure if google it, you can find recommendations from other folks
on what they have done/seen etc.
    regards

  • MTU Size Problem Loading Certain Webpages

    Hello Colleagues,
I'm having a strange problem dealing with MTU sizes and loading certain webpages. I am aware of the default Microsoft MTU of 1500 and also using GRE IPSEC Tunnels recommended at MTU size 1400. I have since manually set some users PC's to MTU of 1400 and most of those users are experiencing no issues. However, there are a few users who still experience website loading issues even though I have manually changed their MTU size to 1400.
These are domain accounts will the same image loads on their machines, so all have the same permissions, rights, firewall settings, etc. They all use the same LAN, switches, and routers.

    UPDATE
I have since applied the following config to the tunnel interfaces:
    ip mtu 1400
    ip tcp adjust-mss 1400
    tunnel path-mtu-discovery
This worked and I was able to reset each users PC to default MTU size of 1500, but only until just now. I got a call from a user who explained that he wasn't able to reach some websites, again.
Sure enough, I've just confirmed that all of the users are unable to access the websites any longer.
This is crazy, does anyone have any ideas?

  • EIGRP MTU Size Causing Neighbor Flap - Pls help!

I've been reading the post here which is quite good but, I have some outstanding questions I hope someone can help me with?
    https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/thread/43100#233367
Essentially, we have a DCI which is an evpl link - layer 2. The evpl connection is terminated with a Cisco 3925 at each location (once it comes out of the provider's Ciena box). It is a dot1g tagged trunk - L2 connection. We are running EIGRP between the two. Before setting up OTV, all link sizes were 1500 MTU...which obviously will not work with OTV....and it didnt!. OTV is running on 7Ks a few hops away from each 3925. So, I went on each and every link - (pain stakingly) and configured MTU size for 9216 - enabling jumboframes at the system level too where applicable. What do you know, OTV started working and i could ping to at least up to 2000 bytes with DF-bit set too! (I didn't try any higher).
Last night, our provider did some 'maintenance' without telling us - which brought the link down. The link was 'down' even after the maintenace was completed. After looking in the logs and seeing this, I suspected it had to do with MTU sizes after quickly googling around.

So, I reduced the MTU size back to 1500 and low and behold, adjacency stayed. Let me also say that there weren't any errors on the links too. So, I decided to try and increase the MTU back up to 9216 - OTV started working again and adjancey held - it didnt flap. I thought for a second and decided to bounce the link. Once i did this, EIGRP started flapping again with the same exact behavior. After calling the provider, they claim that their max MTU is only 1522 for our EVPL link. I don't see this being possible since I was able to ping DF-BIT set way above 1522. Maybe I'm missing something. We are going to coordinate with them to increase the MTU size on the link. But why/how did it work to begin with - especially since OTV doesn't support fragmenation....I understand that OTV adjacency can still form since ISIS only needs 14xx something...but I wasn't able to get certain protocals/services like esxi host management to work via OTV until i increased MTU size.
Also, after reading the above article it sounds like EIGRP will 'peer' or decide on MTU of it's update packets? If that's the case, maybe the bouncing of the link allowed EIGRP to negotiate it's packet sizes to above 1500 and that's why if I change the MTU size to above 1500 everything works fine - OTV/2000 byte bf-bit set ping, until I bounce the link? If this is the case, is there anyway to 'force' EIGRP to use 1500 for it's packets for its protocol traffic and allow everything else to use the MTU set on the link?
I would appreciate any help explaining this - hopefully you're not as confused as I was after reading it again!

Did you ever find the root cause and this solution for this?  We are experiencing the same issues with our 2 4500  Catalyst and a couple of routers on our inter routing VLAN that we use for only the 2 chassis and a couple of router.  MTU is already set at 1500 on the 2 chassis.

  • NX7000 - MTU Size

    Hello,
I configured 4 port channels with mtu size 9000. The VM engineers requested me to configre the same mtu size on the vlans assiged to those 4 port channels. I wasn't sure if I needed to configure the MTUs on the VLANs since I already configured them on the port channels.
My question is, do I need to set the MTU size per VLAN if I already set it up on the port-channel?
    Thanks in advance, ~sK
Example of the port channel and vlan config:
    interface Vlan101
      ip address 172.22.101.253/24
      ip router eigrp 10
      hsrp version 2
      hsrp 101
        preempt
        priority 90
        timers  2  6
        ip 172.22.101.254
      ip dhcp relay address x.x.x.x
      ip dhcp relay address x.x.x.x
      no shutdown
      delay 2000
    interface Ethernet6/1
      description ESX-BC-11(#1)
      switchport
      switchport mode trunk
      switchport trunk allowed vlan 68,71,100,108-113,119,136,152,175
switchport trunk allowed vlan add 202,214,221,223,231-232,241,243
switchport trunk allowed vlan add 300,800,1200,1300-1302,1321,1400
switchport trunk allowed vlan add 1600,1800,3712
      spanning-tree bpduguard enable
      mtu 9000
      channel-group 11
      no shutdown

    Hi,
The ESX host will be able to communicate with other systems in the same VLAN with 9000-byte jumbo frames, but if the traffic from the ESX host will be routed via the SVI i.e., interface vlan 101, then you will need to change the MTU on the SVI with the mtu interface sub-command, where is the maximum frame size you want to allow.
If you don't set this, when the ESX host tries to route any jumbo frames, the router will respond with an ICMP Type 3 Code 4 message (Fragmentation Needed and Don't Fragment was Set) causing the host to reduce the maximum packet size it sends.

  • Link Aggregation dladm on T2000 with 2 e1000g. How can i change mtu size

    Hello
    I made a Link Aggregation on a T2000 with e1000g1 & e1000g2 successfully.
Now i want to raise up the mtu size to mtu 9000 for the aggregation.
    I tried /etc/hostname.aggr
    mtu 9000
    unsuccessfully- MTU size still 1500
    /kernel/drv/etc/e1000g.conf
    setting Max Fram Size for 1 2 3 interface to 2(upto 8k)
    also not successfully
    MaxFrameSize=0,2,2,2;
    # 0 is for normal ethernet frames.
    # 1 is for upto 4k size frames.
    # 2 is for upto 8k size frames.
    # 3 is for upto 16k size frames.
    # These are maximum frame limits, not the actual ethernet frame
    # size. Your actual ethernet frame size would be determined by
    # protocol stack configuration (please refer to ndd command man pages)
    # For Jumbo Frame Support (9k ethernet packet)
    # use 3 (upto 16k size frames)
    Has someone an idea?
    thanx for advice

  • IPSEC MTU size should be 1500 or 1400 with ipsec 60 overhead?

Our l2l vpn connections have different MTU sizes. The VPn connection is established but I only get inbound traffice but no outbound traffic. Should the path mtu be 1400 or 150 for the VPN?
    1400, ipsec overhead 60, media mtu 1500

Just keep pinging the other end ip address with ping x.x.x.x -f -l 1500.
Keep decreasing it untill you get replies back. The time you get reply is probably the MTU you would want to use.

  • MPLS MTU size

    Hello,
Please correct me if I am wrong. The MPLS MTU size is 1518 to 1520 and the normal MTU size is 1500, So does it means that while configuring the MPLS network on the Switches attached with the MPLS CE router we MUST have to configure the MTU size to 1520 or not.
    Please confirm

MPLS is not configured between the CE and the PE. So if your IP mtu is 1500 then the switch between the CE and PE needs to support 1500 only.
The mpls mtu needs to be configured in the core where ethernet switches are used.
    Hope this helps,

    Hi Jorg ,
Are you trying to reduce the file size with the "Reduced size PDF" in the save as other option.
Give it a try if you haven't done it prior.
Open that PDF>File>Save as Other>Reduced size PDF.
If possible ,please share the snapshot of the error message with us so that we can have a look in order to assist you further.

  • Urgent: Issue with the size of an xls file generated from a rtf template

    Hi all,
    I have a template.rtf
In BI, when I get the file in excel format and save it, the size of the report is 32 MB. When I just "save as" the same report, without changing anything, the size of the report is 8 MB.
Do you know how to get directly the report with the size 8 MB or would you have some guidelines to avoid this issue.
    Thank you in advance,
    Sonia.

Thank you Kurz for your answer. I'm going to try to be more precise.
Actually I'm not in EBS. I generate the output (xls format) direclty from BIP.
The DB of my application can't be requested directly, then I use HTTP request.
From BIP, I launch the report choosing excel as output - the template is an rtf template.
I have been requested to open or save the xls file that I save (32 MB).
I open the excel file, save it again and the size of the file is now 8 MB.
    Regards,
    Sonia.

Time Machine on my iMac won't open iPhoto. It goes to desktop screen automatically. When I select User/Picture/Iphoto library it only brings up the preview page with the size of the folder. I can't get into the library to look for lost photos.

Thank You. This helps me alot to get into the masters and to see events and photos in a utilitarian way, but it is not as easy as viewing the normal iphoto format to find photos.  Can I do something else or did I not do something right to not see normal iphoto in Time Machine ?

  • I can't download the apps with big size like need for spees, but in apps with normal size(less than 100KB)there is no problem,is there any body who can help me?

I can't download the apps with big size like need for spees

Have a little patience. 4 minutes is only a short time for someone to find your post and reply to it. Also clicking on "This Solved My Problem" marks your problem as solved so many folks that may otherwise help will pass the question by since it is "solved."
I suggest you start a new question that gives a good title to a specific problem. Then in the body of the thread describe the problem in detail, tell us what steps you have tried so far to correct the problem, what happened, and what error messages you received.

  • Can someone help with auto-size fields in forms?

I created a form in Acrobat for my team members with auto-size text fields that allow to shrink the text when the field size is not large enough to show the entire text. When I then open the same form file with Adobe Reader on my machine with text that has shrunk in some field, I can see all the text and have also a scroll function when the text size has reached its lower limits and there is still more text to show.
However, when I receive the filled out forms back from other team members' iPads (they use my template created with Acrobat), the text didn't shrink as on a PC version and the scroll function is disabled. I checked the template and the fields are correctly set to auto-size left and they do work on my PC's and laptop's Adobe Reader. But the iPad version of Adobe Reader may cause some issues.
    Can anybody help with solutions?
    Thank you!
    Klaus

The filled version of your PDF document (20140722 Daily Meeting Report...pdf) is no longer a PDF form because it has been flattened.
Once an interactive PDF form (such as your template version) is flattened, all form fields are replaced with images of filled data.  You can no longer interact with form fields, edit form data, or tap/click any buttons in the flattened PDF document.  That is the reason why the text in auto-size text fields did not shrink.
When you email a PDF document (including a PDF form) in Adobe Reader for iOS, the E-mail Document dialog is displayed.
In this particular case, your team member must have selected "Share Flattened Copy".
If you would like to keep the interactivity of a PDF form, you can select "Share Original Document".  Please advise your team members to select the "Share Original Document" option when emailing filled forms.
Unfortunately, once flattened, a PDF document cannot be reverted back to the original "unflattened" state.  However, if your team members still have the original filled forms, they can resend the forms with the "Share Original Document" option.
Please let us know if you have further questions.

I was playing aaroound with the size of my window and now I can't get it back to standard size. Any suggestions?

If you're using Lion, you can resize by dragging from any corner, in Leopard and lower it can only be resized from the bottom right hand corner.
