Without the Core 2 Duo on my MB am I out of luck on Lion?

Without the Core 2 Duo on my MB (2007) am I out of luck on Lion? Tried to download Lion and I don't have the proper processor. Is it possible to change processors to the Intel Core 2 Duo?
Thanks,

A Core 2 Duo processor is the minimum requirement for OSX Lion.
If you have a MacBook with a Core Duo Processor (without the '2') then sorry to say but you are out of luck.
Since the processor is soldered to the logic board it cannot be replaced/upgraded.

  • What's the difference between the Core 2 Duo and the Core Duo

I recently bought a new Macbook (Original) with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
I gave my old one to my younger cousin. It has just an Intel Core Duo processor.
    What does that "2" mean?
Does it mean the processor is faster?
I was guessing it means that I can have more RAM (because this can hold 4 GB instead of 2 GB, like my previous Macbook)...
Both these Macbooks have only 1 GB of RAM, yet the new one seems MUCH faster. The only real difference in technical specs is the processor. Could the processor be responsible for the much faster computer, or is it simply because it's a new computer?
    Thanks!

Part of that has to do with the chipsets, although I've heard that some of the Intel chipsets work with both the Core Duo and the earlier Core 2 Duo.
The Core Duo is the dual-processor version of the Core processor.
The Core 2 Duo is the dual-processor version of the newer generation Core 2 processor.
The Core 2 series is more advanced. They likely are produced on faster semiconductor processes in smaller "geometries". I think part of it is a higher operating clock speed, but it could also include advances in processing power where it takes fewer average clock cycles to complete certain instructions. There could be things like more pipelines, faster/more arithmetic logic units, and other architectural improvements that makes it work faster overall even without clock-speed increases.

  • Should I have the Core 2 Duo processor??

I purchased a MBP 15" (retail store) in Octoboer 06. The computer's information says it only has the Core Duo processor in it. Should my model have the Core 2 Duo in it instead?? Given the money I spent, I hate to think I didn't get the machine I thought I was getting.

Apple announced the Core 2 Duo on the 24th Oct. If you bought your machine before that, no-one at the store would have known a new achine was due.

  • Is the Core 2 Duo MacBook Snow-Leopard ready?

As in, will Snow Leopard be able to boost the performance using the 64-bit technology compared to ordinary Tiger or Leopard on this machine? I know it requires 64-bit apps, was just reading about it, but in general the OS should be quicker and more efficient, yes? Are all of the Core 2 Duo Macs going to see an improvement or are some models too old?
I'm thinking about getting a MacBook, seen a refurbished 2GHz Core 2 Duo model with Leopard installed (includes Leopard discs etc) for £599. Worth it, with the potential to go fully 64-bit with Snow Leopard at some point in the future?

System specifications for Snow Leopard have not been released, and probably won't be until it's much closer to release. No one at this time can say what models of Mac it will run on and what performance gains will be experienced on any particular model of Mac.
But if it's a choice between a Core 2 Duo Mac and one with the earlier Core Duo processor, I'd opt for the Core 2 Duo system, budget allowing. The Core 2 Duo is a better processor, and the Macs that used it have other improved features that would make having them worthwhile unless you're just really strapped for cash.

According to the Lion webpage, you would need to add more RAM to your computer and check to make sure you have about 7GB of free hard drive space.
The page can be found here if you need more info:

I have an IPad with a Restriction code that we cannot remember.  Is it possible to delete and restore the IPad without the code.  If not how do I figure out the code or how to remove it?

The only option is to wipe the device clean and restore it to factory settings.  Hope you have a backup.
Follow the instructions in  iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 to restore the device to factory settings.
Once you have setup the device as a new one, you can then sync it back with your iTunes account and all your music, apps, contacts and any other content sync'ed with iTunes will be loaded on the device. Any content that is stored only on the device and not sync'ed with iTunes, like app logins or data, will be lost during this process. Be forewarned that this is a long process and can take a couple of hours or more to complete. This can be painful, but it is necessarily so to prevent users from working around the security settings. After the restore is complete, you can setup a new Restrictions passcode. Make a note of the passcode to avoid this situation in future.

  • Question: I want to update to the new LION OSX, but it says that I need to at least have an Intel Core 2 Duo. When I click "about this Mac," it says that I have a 2.16 Intel Core Duo. Is there a difference between the "Core 2 Duo" and the "Core Duo"?

Well, my title basically asks the question that I am seeking an answer for. Im not sure what year my MB Pro is, and I cant exactly find it on the Apple site. Its a 2.16 Intel Core Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. All I see (dating back to 2007,) is Intel Core 2 Duo on the apple site. Im pretty sure (but not 100% positive,) that my MB Pro is a late 2008/early 2009. Just trying to figure out if I can install LION OSX or not, since it requires atleast intel core 2 duo, and mine says I only have the intel core duo. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Core Duo is 32 bit processor and Core 2 Duo is 64 bit processor
OS X Lion, will only on 64 bit Intel processor Mac's.
The following Mac's that have 32 bit Intel “Yonah” processorsthat won't run OS X Lion.

  • Want to buy MacBook Pro 13" (new Mac-user). Worried about the Core 2 Duo

I'm really eager to buy a MacBook Pro 13" right now, but core 2 duo feels pretty outdated, I remember my computer from 2006 having that CPU.
My greatest worry is that the computer will feel out-dated pretty fast, like for how many years will it be able to survive OS-updates? I really want to buy one now, but I don't know if i should wait. Do any of you mac-users feel it to be sluggish in any way?
    Appreciate your help.

i don't have a lot of experience with this as we just made the switch about a month ago. it's mostly my wife's macbook pro and i wanted her to get a toshiba with i5 processor but she wanted to get the mac. i found this on cnet, which made me feel better about the core2. remember it is running apple stuff which isn't a drain on it like microsoft stuff:
The speed-bumped Core 2 Duo processor at the heart of the MacBook Pro isn't part of the 2010 Core i3, i5 and i7 processor family--it's a holdover from last year, and that's a bit of a shame. However, most mainstream users will find perfectly adequate performance in these Core 2 Duos--multitasking, video editing/playback, and photo and graphics work can all be handled, sometimes surprisingly well. *In our benchmarks, the 2010 MacBook Pro 13-inch outperformed the Core i3 Asus U30Jc and came close to the souped-up Core i5 Sony Vaio Z116GX/S. Against those laptops, it actually came out on top in multitasking by a decent margin, although some of the programs we use for our benchmark tests, such as iTunes and Photoshop, are very Mac-friendly.* The 15-inch Core i7 Spring 2010 MacBook Pro still outperforms this 13-incher by a considerable margin, but it also costs $1,000 more in the configuration we tested.

  • Will the Core 2 Duo CPU work on the Qosmio G30?

    Question is as follow:
In 2 months Intel will come up with Core 2 Duo/merom cpu for laptop.
Will then todays toshiba qosmio laptop support these processors for an upgrade ?
And wonder in general how much can be upgraded with toshiba laptop's?
Like if I want to have e-sata on this laptop. Maybe not supported by chipset ?

As you know this is a user-to-user forum and I don?t think that you will find somebody from Toshiba here.
However, this is my own opinion and this could be one of the reasons. I agree with you that duo core 2 CPU supports less power and generate less heat but more or less this are also properties of the intel duo core CPUs.
But I think that in the future the duo core 2 CPU will supports a higher speed as the duo core and I think the temp will also increases.
You know that the notebooks technology is different as the desktop technology and it's more difficult to upgrade the parts on the notebook as on the desktop pc. Some CPUs are also soldered on the board. (but I'm not sure about Qosmio) But if you will be able to remove it and to upgrade the CPU so then you could get some problems with BIOS and also software (chipset utility?). Maybe this could have a bad influence on the drivers and utilities.
As you see there are more factors as only the temperature. Everything must be compatible. I think the Qosmio G30 is a very nice notebook with really good performance. I think the CPU upgrade is not necessary because you will not get much more performance as with the core duo CPU.

  • Are the i5/i7 processors way better than the Core 2 Duo?

Currently travel with my MacBook, but it's heavy (Pro stays home).  I'm considering replacing the MB with an Air with 4GB RAM/256GB HD and I'm looking at refurbs.  Go with the new i5 or i7 or is the Core 2 close enough?  Thanks.

Another part of my thought process is that it's probably better to buy the most recent hardware when one is spending this much as Apple does sometimes stop support for older products.
Apple will offer hardware support options either through them or an authorized reseller for 5-years after the machine is discontinued, it is 7-years in the state of California. From a software perspective, Apple will usually continue to offer security updates for an OS until it becomes the 2nd oldest in generation.
So for example, now we're on Lion, Leopard will fall off the radar.

  • IMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB, Extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since migration from Mountain Lion to Mavericks

    Dear Apple Support Community.
As mentioned by a number of users reporting the same problem, my 2009 iMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, has become extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since it was migrated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks (OS 10.9 then OS 10.9.1).
I have already run CleanMyMac, deleted 5GB of useless stuffs, which did not translate into any improvement. Following the advices collected in other Apple Support Community threads, I have applied EtreCheck the outcome of which is provided below.
For information, I have also upgraded my 2011 MacBook CPU2.3 GHz Core i7, 8GB which became only a bit slower than before, sometimes freezing which it almost never did before. However, I am used to the fact that Mac get usually slower and more prompt fo freeze after upgrading to a more recent OS.
Both my 2009 iMac and my 2011 MacBook have F-Secure installed. So the problem with the 2009 IMac is unlikly to be due to the presence of F-Secure. Interestingly, the few abnormalities found by Etrecheck were exacly identical before I ran CleanMyMac. There are two more findings (mentioned below) since I ran CleanMyMac on the 2009 iMac, which again didn't improve the problem.
So please find below the details of the EtreCheck experience and some additional measurements made with iStat while running EtreCheck:

The iMac can work slowly with only one software e.g. either Mail or Safari or Firefox, but still the below "out of Memory" message occurs about every 3 minutes.
Aperture has becomre to slow to be useable
If trying to write a mail (with Mail) while Safari or Firefox is open, then the "out of Memory" message occurs about every 20 seconds so I need to check on "Resume" several times per minute.
    Conclusions
From the above, unless anyone in the Apple Support Community proves to be able to identify a specific problem leading to a way to find a cure, I tend to conclude that Mavericks is not suitable for computers operating with a Core 2 Duo CPU even with a 8GB of RAM.
Unless I missed something, I did not see any warning from Apple Computer Inc. informing their customers they should refrain from upgrading Core 2 Duo Computers.
The only solution I see so far is to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion. And the Apple Support Community would confirm that it is the only solution, I would appreciate to get your guidance on how to proceed.
    Intended action plan
Migrate the above 2009 iMac to a 2014 Mac Mini Server operating on Mavericks to ensure that no data may be lost while downgrading to Montain Lion.
Provided the above downgrading operation is successful, assign this 2009 iMac to partial retirement e.g. Mail, Skype, iTunes  and DVD player.
In advance, I would like to thank the Apple Community for helping me either i) finding a cure to the problem, ii) or confirming that Mavericks cannot operate properly on Core 2 Duo computers, iii) and in such a case, guiding me on how to downgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Yours sincerely

... what anti-virus would you recommend using?
Use what is already included with OS X. It already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • How do I mirror my 24"iMac 2.8GHz Intel core 2 duo to my Apple TV? I am running Mountain Lion and My iMac is an early 2008 model. Thanks

I purchased Apple TV yesterday strictly to mirror my desktop to my TV. Now I find out my desktop is not supported? How can I mirror my iMac to my Apple TV? I am running Mountain Lion and the iMac is a 2.8 GHz with intel core 2 duo from early 2008.
    Thanks for your help!

You cannot officially do this Apple's way as they do not support your computer for Airplay.
There is a software solution called Airparrot that you may want to demo:

  • Hello friends!I use mac book(2.4 GHz intel core 2 duo).is it worth updating to snow leopard and then lion?if so how to do so?

Hello  I use mac book 2.4 GHz intel core 2 duo.Is it worth updating to latest version like snow leopard and then Lion or buying new mac air?
    regards
    Clayton.

Well, it depends on what you expect it to do and if it works as expected - it that answer is yes, I'd say make sure you max out the RAM (I've noticed Snow Leopard needs more). Doing it this way gives you a machine which will run 2 different OS versions - on the other hand, depending on when you'd buy the MBA, you may only be able to run Lion (unless you buy that quickly as well while they still come with SL).

  • 15" 2.53Ghz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro - kernel panics about every 5 minutes after Lion upgrade

I just recently upgraded to Lion and since then have been plagued as it seems many users have been with kernel panics after the upgrade.  Have repaired disk permissions, analyzed the drive with diskwarrior, swapped out the memory, unplugged all external devices, and shut down all unnecessary applications to no avail.  Anyone have any idea when this is going to be fixed by Apple?  My laptop is pretty much useless and formatting and going back to Snow Leopard is a rediculous option since I really do not want to spend a day or more reinstalling all of my applications just to get to a workable situation until Apple gets their "stuff" together.  C'mon Apple - we expect more from you than this!

  • Bought 17" Macbook Pro 2.8 Core 2 Duo on Monday, new MBP's out today!!

    Hi
Hoping for some consumer advice here... I am a mac user for over 15 years but on Monday, I had a day off work and after looking at getting a new 17" Macbook Pro for well over a year to replace my dieing 15" version, I bit the bullet, and was at first happy with my purchase.
Then, obviously the i5 version is announced today - I am not pleased and contacting 'Cancom' Apple reseller here in Edinburgh and they said 'they didn't know new ones were due' and that 'that's just the nature of buying computers'. No Sorry, no sympathy, nothing. I can't return it as I opened the packaging and booted up the machine, which breaks the license agreement.
Ironically, Cancom's company strapline is 'The Apple Mac Specialists'.
I am really unhappy about this whole thing... the staff member was a patronising so and so when I called earlier which didn't help. I've contacted Cancom Customer Services about the matter but I wondered if anyone had any good advice or had been through any similar situations?
    Cheers in advance

Thanks guys, yeah I normally use Apple.com/uk site to buy but it was handy for me on Monday during a day off and wasn't necessarily 'rash' as I have been considering it for almost two years! (my 15" MBP is running on one fan, at 90degrees!)
As far as not knowing about the cycle of upgrading the MBP's - I'm normally pretty clever with my research but for some reason I had in the back of my head, that Apple had brought out 3 new MPB's (all sizes) around 2 months ago!! I swear I'd seen them announced in a newsletter because I remember clicking through from my email client and looking at the specs online!
hmm, bit of a nightmare all this all in all. ta for the words though.
