WLC Failover again..

Hello,
I?m still involved in the deployment of 55 APs with 3 4402 WLCs in different cities, and I?m still having troubles with failover configuration. I configured APs with static IP, and then configured primary, secondary and tertiary WLC address providing full-qualified names. These names are stored in the master and secondary DNS server, and are resolved flawlessy. Ports in firewalls are opened, so I made several tests, all of them without success.
Then, I got one of the AP and entered in debug mode (with serial cable) and found the issue: DNS queries were sent to broadcast IP (255.255.255.255), not unicast to master DNS.
So that?s my question: Is there any way to set DNS resolution in LWAPP APs working with static IP? If I set them to DHCP, with properly DNS address, I can resolve primary, secondary and tertiary WLC to each AP, but in my deployment I?d prefer to use static addressing.

You said you configured the static IP for the APs, but did you configure the dns server for the APs? I have never used static ip, not sure where you can configure dns server for it.
Also AP use the configured primary, secondary and tertiary controllers information to select which controller to join after received the controllers responses to AP lwapp discovery, not use them to discover controllers. Before AP learns the candidate controllers from dhcp or dns resolution, those primary, secondary and tertiary controller settings are no use to AP.
Now it looks like the AP does not know where is the dns server. Not sure if you configured that correctly.
The last thing, you should set the controllers system name in the primary, secondary and tertiery controllers fields, not the FQDN. If your controllers' FQDN is the same as their system names. It is ok.

    But our test AP could not register to the Backup N+1 WLC. ( We are using option 43 in our DHCP server for all the AP boot.)

    CONCLUSION:
    I needed to activate the EVALUATION LICENSE in the HA SKU WLC which had status = EULA NOT ACCEPTED. I will test the SSID's in order to confirm that redundancy using HA SKU WLC works fine.

  • WLC Failover configuration

    Hello,
    I want to deploy two wlc 5508 running Software Version                 7.0.116.0 in failover mode.
    I read the documentation and I read that the two wlc must have the same configuration.
    I want to be sure that I've well understood.
    For all the interfaces, each appliance must have a different IP. I mean if WLC1 have the interface "ap-manager" "management" and "dynamic interfaces" in .1, I suppose that WLC2 should have the same interfaces with .2 IP.
    Am I right?

    The 5508 does not have an ap-manager unless you specifiacally create one.  I would not create one and use the default management interface. 
    Yes the WLC's should have the exact same config, except for the interfaces ip address and of course the hostename.

  • WLC - Failover (clients)

    AP is registered to primary WLC. Will clients stay connected to WLAN when the AP failover to secondary WLC.

    Please advise.

    Unfortunately, clients are disconnected from an AP when associating to a new controller.

    does the configuration synchronize between the two WLCs?

    No it doesn't sync configuration.... you need to configure each wlc and make sure that both are in the same mobility group in order for the ap's to know of both wlc's.
    You would need to configure the access points with a primary, secondary or tertiary wlc, in order for that ap to know which wlc it should be joined with.

  • WLC failover solution

    Hi,
    My client is having two Cisco WLC 5508. One is at location A & another at location B They want to configure failover between these two WLC’s i.e. in case of location A WLC failure, the AP’s should get register to location B WLC which is currently happening but the clients will get the IP Address from location DHCP pool. Their requirement is that if in the event of failover, then clients should get the IP Address from the local DHCP server pool & not from the location B DHCP pool & visa-versa.
    As far as design prospective, in location A they are having 5 WLAN’s; one for each floor. We have configured 5 AP groups for the same. Where as in location B they are having single WLAN serving all the clients.
    My query is -  if we configure Flexconnect for all the AP’s in location A as well as for location B even when they are connected to local WLC, is that a recommended design suggestion from Cisco?
    Secondly, if in case of configuring Flexconnect, do I need to create the 5 WLAN’s & 5 AP groups for Bangalore AP’s in location B controller?

    I use Flexconnect, and for that to work you'll have to have the same AP Groups and WLANS configured on both controllers so when the AP fails over the correct WLANS show up.  Otherwise i believe the AP will get the default AP Group.

  • WLC Failover Question

    Hi All
    Can anyone give me a definitive answer to this question please?
    If you are using a pair of wireless LAN controllers configured with primary and secondary controllers for the access points and the primary controller fails - do the access points reboot before associating to the secondary controller. I can't see why they would need to but documentation suggests they do.
    Additionally, has anyone significantly reduced the failover time? If so, what is the lowest practical failover time. I know the actual failover time can be reduced to 3 seconds but I think that is likely to cause other problems.

    As far I know, In this case the AP does not reboot, only changes its lwapp status to discovery and begins with the discovery proccess.
    You can see in the AP if it is restarted; when it places registered in the second WLC, Wireless tab and select the AP affected; normaly in the first tab you can see bottom right the AP up time and the AP association time; if this AP has rebooted this value will close to 00:00.
    Normaly I set the Ap heartbeat timeout to 5 seconds, I don´t know if is the best value and my failover time is bigger than your, I don´t know how critical are your network, but a prefer a higher heartbeat timeout to avoid unnecessary AP changes that spend more time.

  • Understanding Flexconnect - Local vs Central Switching, and WLC failover scenario ??

    We have one WLC 5508 in Building1, few 2700 Series AP in Building1, and one 1252AG in Building2. The LAN subnet is same for both Buildings connected via a dark fiber.
    My requirement is to have Central Switching in Building1 since WLC is located locally, and Local Switching in Building2 to avoid inter-building traffic, for both Buildings we already one VLAN/IP Subnet. (Both Buildings access resources from a central Datacenter which hosts all the servers.)
    Questions:
    1. Is the above scenario possible using single SSID ? My understanding is that one WLAN+SSID can't have both Local and Central switching enabled.
    2. In Flexconnect Central Switching mode, during WLC failure, does the switching change to Local switching automatically ?
    3. When I choose Local Switching for a specific WLAN, does it Locally switch always , or does it Locally switch only when WLC is down ?
    4. We want to use Microsoft PEAP using AD User Authentication. When Local Authentication is enabled on WLC, I understand that when WLC fails (and RADIUS Server is still reachable), can we still have the AP directly contact RADIUS server as a direct client and provide 802.1X Microsoft PEAP authentication. Guess this is Primary Backup Radius Server configuration. Is this understanding correct ?

    The LAN subnet is same for both Buildings connected via a dark fiber.
    If this is the case there is no need of FlexConnet, as you have enough bandwidth & same L2 extended in those two buildings. Typically FlexConnect is for branch deployment where WAN link bandwidth is a concern.
    Anyway if you want to do this & here is the answer for your specific queries.

    You can have both local switching & central switching available for a given SSID. Only FlexConnect mode AP will do Local switching & all Local mode AP will do central switching, though both using the same SSID.

    No, if it is central switching SSID, when WLC is not available client won't able to join this SSID. It is not fall back to Local switching.

    This is applicable only to FlexConnect mode APs & it always do local switching if that configured. If WLC is not reachable AP will go on "standalone mode" & still do local switching.

    Yes, when this option configured & WLC is not reachable (but RADIUS is reachable) then AP will act as Authenticator & pass radius messages to Auth Server directly.

  • 5508 WLC failover detection

    Hi all, we run several 5508 in HA mode. Is there a possibility to detect a HA failover through syslog or snmp? I was not able to find any information on the web about syslog messages or snmp OID's regarding cisco's HA failover. The problem we face is simple, from time to time our controllers failover from primary to backup and vice versa. As this is unusuall we would lilke know when this happens and therefore looking for syslog (push) or snmp (pull) information. We run 7.6.120.0 on all boxes and the HA link is connected through a switched (Layer2) backbone connection. We are not looking for any icmp related stuff, in other words, we don't want to ping the redundancy mgmt ip or peer redundancy mgmt ip... Any help or hints are highly appreciated, thanks Nico

  • 2 WLCS for failover

    Hi,
    I want to buy a second WLC. The equipment hasn't been ordered yet so I just trying to think a head.
    As I understand it if I buy the second WLC and put it in the same mobility group then enable AP fallback that is all I have to do. Is that really it? They will be 2504's. The APs are Air Cap 36021-A-k9.
    What about adding the access points etc etc does that happen automatically and the config gets replicated? Again sorry to ask what might be a stupid question for many but I really know very little about wireless at the moment.
    Also is there an idiots guide somewhere for setting up guest wireless lans?

    Consider a scenario where there are two Wireless LAN Controllers (WLCs) named WLC1 and WLC2. These WLCs are configured in the same subnet in one WLAN. In order to achieve high availability, this is how the WLAN is configured:
    WLC1 and WLC2 are configured within the same mobility      group.
    Half of the access points are configured to use WLC1 as      the primary WLC and use WLC2 as the secondary WLC.
    The other half of the access points are configured to      use WLC2 as the primary WLC and use WLC1 as the secondary WLC.
    The fallback feature is enabled on both WLC1 and WLC2.

    If any of the WLCs go down, the access point that is joined to the failed WLC  recognizes this (keep alive (heartbeat) between access point and WLC). Therefore, the access point begins to join the good WLC, which still runs. This is not stateful failover, which means that the access point has to join the new WLC and therefore the wireless clients.
    Also, if either of the WLCs do not work and the affected access points re-register to the other WLC, then the wireless clients have to re-associate and therefore lose wireless connection during failover as it is not stateful failover. The failover is not transparent to the WLAN client. That is, the WLAN clients lose their WLAN connectivity during access point failover.
    Access points and clients are not effected on the WLC that runs. This means that the fallback of the access point is not transparent to the clients. Only access points and clients on the failed WLC are effected.
    In order to configure the WLAN Controller failover for Lightweight Access points, the Access Point must be configured correctly in a mobility group for the AP failover and each Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) must have the AP failover feature enabled.
    Configure the Fallback Feature on WLC
    The last step is to configure the Fallback feature on the controller. This feature ensures that the AP switches return to the first WLC when the WLC that comes back on line. Complete these steps:
    From the GUI, choose Controller > General.A      list of options appears on the General screen.
    For the AP Fallback option, choose Enabled from      the drop-down menu.
    Click Apply.Note: It is sufficient to      enable the Fallback feature on the secondary controller alone. But it is      recommended to configure it on the primary WLC as well because it can be      configured as a secondary controller for other access points

    After you complete these steps, the setup is configured for WLC failover. When the primary controller (WLC-1, in this case) goes down, the APs automatically get registered with the secondary controller (WLC-2). The APs register back to the primary controller when the primary controller comes back on line. AP switching between the primary and secondary controllers also affects the wireless clients associated with these APs.
    In controller software release 5.1.151.0, you can configure the wireless network so that the backup controller recognizes a join request from a higher-priority access point and, if necessary, disassociates a lower-priority access point as a means to provide an available port. In order to configure this feature, failover priority must be enabled on the network and assign priorities to the individual access points. By default, all access points are set to priority level 1, which is the lowest priority level.
    Note: Be aware that Failover priority takes effect only if there are more association requests after a controller failure than there are available backup controller ports.
    Wireless LAN Controller Failover Priority
    During installation, Cisco recommends you connect all lightweight access points to a dedicated controller, and configure each lightweight access point for final operation. This step configures each lightweight access point for a primary, secondary, and tertiary controller and allows it to store the configured mobility group information. When sufficient controllers are deployed, if one controller fails, active access point client sessions are momentarily dropped while the dropped access point associates with another controller, which allows the client device to immediately reassociate and reauthenticate.

  • Implementing Two Guest Anchor WLCs

    Hello -
    I am wondering if anyone has ever setup a guest network solution using two anchor controllers where the internal WLCs each have two anchors configured and use a primary Anchor and when unavailable can dynamically fail over to a secondary Anchor. 
    I am looking to bring my current guest service onto the DMZ.  Right now we are using separate ISPs where we tunnel the guest traffic to an anchor controller and out the separate ISP.   We do not use our corporate internet service for guest.   In any event.  The DMZ design I am working on would include two WLCS sitting on our DMZ.  I'd like to have each internal WLC configured to associate to the DMZ WLC that is connected to our active DMZ/Border.   Upon failure, I would then like to have the internal WLCs failover to the second DMZ WLC on our standby DMZ/Border.   So I would need to configure both anchors on the guest WLAN of each WLC.   I'm just wondering if this is possible and if the failover will actually work.
    Any input is appreciated.   I'd like to implement a redundant guest solution where internal WLCS can dynamically failover to a backup Anchor....

    Hi, I just got done moving our anchors to the DMZ so you are in luck as everything is fresh in my mind. I, like you, have dual anchors in the DMZ I also have over 30 inside (foreign controllers) connected to these anchors.
    When you anchor a WLAN to (2) anchor controllers, the controllers automagically load balance guest associations. Example: 2 guest attached to SSID: GUEST. Guest#1 goes to anchor#1 and guest #2 goes to anchor#2. You dont configure anything, this happens automagically, like I mentioned.
    As for failover. Yes, if you pull the plug to anchor#1. The EoIP tunnel breaks between the anchor and the foreign controller. Guest that were on anchor#1 will require reauthentication and then join to anchor#2.So if you had say a "accept page", these guest will get that same page again from anchor 2.

  • Client Roaming Within Single WLC with Different AP Groups

    I am trying to setup a 4400 WLC with 2 different AP Groups mapped to its respective Dynamic Interfaces / Vlans. AP's are equally mapped to both the AP groups by Floor wise ex: First floor AP's connect to one AP group and the Second Floor AP's connecting to other AP group.
    Goal is to create separate Network policy for each Floor using ACL's and apply to their respective Vlans on Layer 3 Switch. Wireless Raoming should happen seamlessly between these Ap groups making the DHCP changes by not disconnecting and connecting every time user roam across the Floors.
    Problem is When Clients Roam between Floors i,e moving between AP Groups, they still maintain their old DHCP IP addresses when moved to new AP group even after Client re-authetication. This defies our goal of creating a Wireless Network Policy using single WLC.
    Knobs i have tuned in WLC to acheive our goal includes....
    1. WLAN Session Timeout - No use
    2. DHCP Proxy Disable - No Use
    3. ARP Time out - No use
    Looks like WLC is storing the IP address and MAC information of the Client unconditonally during roaming and clearing out untill a manual or forced disconnect or disassociation is done.
    Did anyone tried to implement this setup and made it running? Any help or suggestion would be higly appreciated.

    abit late for a reply but....try going to the SSID>Advanced and ticking the "DHCP Addr. Assignment" Required checkbox and test again.
    What does the DHCP Required field under a WLAN signify?
    A. DHCP Required is an option that can be enabled for a WLAN. It       necessitates that all clients that associate to that particular WLAN obtain IP       addresses through DHCP. Clients with static IP addresses are not allowed to       associate to the WLAN. This option is found under the Advanced tab of a WLAN.       WLC allows the traffic to/from a client only if its IP address is present in       the MSCB table of the WLC. WLC records the IP address of a client during its       DHCP Request or DHCP Renew. This requires that a client renews its IP address       every time it re-associates to the WLC because every time the client       disassociates as a part of its roam process or session timeout, its entry is       erased from the MSCB table. The client must again re-authenticate and       reassociate to the WLC, which again makes the client entry in the table.

  • Understanding statistics from a Cisco WLC?

    Hello,
    From the "Monitor" page on our Cisco WLC.  If you go to "Access Points" from the left side then choose one of the Radios like 802.11b/g/n.  That will list all the APs connected with your controller.
    1) First question, some of the APs listed show the "Interference Profile" as "Failed".  What does this mean?  It has connected clients and no one is reporting an issue.  So what does that really mean?
    2) Second question, if you go to the "Details" for one of the APs I can see the "802.11 MAC Counters" showing things like Tx Fragments, Tx Failed Count, FCS Error Count, etc.  Below is what I see.
    Can someone explain what these statistics are saying?  Again there are no issues reported by our users, but some of these values seem high and I don't understand what they are saying or if there is anything I should be considered with.
    Any help on this would be great!

    Counters
    Tx Fragment Count
    This counter is incremented for an acknowledged MPDU with an individual address in the address 1 field.
    Tx Failed Count
    This counter increments when an MSDU is successfully transmitted after one or more retransmissions.
    Multiple Retry Count (Graphics view only)
    This counter shall increment when an MSDU is successfully transmitted after more than one retransmission.
    RTS Success Count
    This counter increments when a CTS is received in response to an RTS.
    ACK Failure Count
    This counter increments when an ACK is not received when expected.
    Multicast Rx Frame Count
    This counter increments when a MSDU is received with the multicast bit set in the destination MAC address.
    Tx Frame Count
    This counter increments for each successfully transmitted MSDU.
    Multicast Tx Frame Count
    This  counter increments only when the multicast bit is set in the  destination MAC address of a successfully transmitted MSDU. When  operating as a STA in an ESS, where these frames are directed to the  access point, this implies having received an acknowledgment to all  associated MPDUs.
    Retry Count
    This counter increments when an MSDU is successfully transmitted after one or more retransmissions.
    Frame Duplicate Count
    This counter increments when a frame is received that the Sequence Control field indicates is a duplicate.
    RTS Failure Count
    This counter increments when a CTS is not received in response to an RTS.
    Rx Fragment Count
    This counter shall be incremented for each successfully received MPDU of type Data or Management.
    FCS Error Count
    This counter increments when an FCS error is detected in a received MPDU.
    WEP Undecryptable Count
    This  counter increments when a frame is received with the WEP subfield of  the Frame Control field set to one and the WEPOn value for the key  mapped to the TA's MAC address indicates that the frame should not have  been encrypted or that frame is discarded due to the receiving STA not  implementing the privacy option.
    Band Select statistics
    When  the feature is activated, the WLC doesn't immediately reply to probe  requests on 11b/g. If immediately a probe is also seen on 11a, then the  client is detected as dual band. Then WLC only replies on 11a. After  some time, this "categorization" expires and WLC will again try to see  if the client is present on both bands.

  • WLC 2125 - Country code selection

    WLC Mode: AIR-WLC2125-K9
    Version: 7.0.116.0
    Here is the scenario, we have two WLC, one is located at SG and the other is located at MY (In test stage).
    Both WLC has configured with three Country Codes CN,MY and SG , as well as the Regulatory Domain 802.11a -CS and 802.11bg -ACE).
    Yesterday we did perform WLC failover test and it was successful but we noticed some of the APs country code are incorrect set as before, we are tried into the AP config, and pull up the Advanced Tab and select the Country where the AP is physically located but the weird issue happened whereby there are only one country code available and the other two country code are missing.
    Here is the AP model we used.
    AIR-LAP1142N-N-K9 (CN)
    AIR-LAP1242AG-S-K9 (SG and MY)
    Could someone help to advise what would be the cause how to resolve this issue.

    With the -E there are many profiles that can be selected, as most tend to be very close to the same restrictions.
    However I would contact your local regulatory domain group and ask them which country is the same as Mongolia. Explain what you are doing and have them tell you, and get it in writing. that way you are covered on your choice.
