WLS with Cocoon

Has anyone tried using Apache's Cocoon for managing web publishing? I've
has a go with Xalan and Xerces, and been pleased with these to date. I've
now come across Apache's Cocoon, and would be interested to here the
opinions of anyone who has used it already.
Mark.

I also managed to get cocoon and weblogic 451 working without too much
difficulty.
However I have't been able to suss out the mechanism for passing a default
file to the cocoon servlet.
Anybody know what to do?

I got Cocoon 1.7.4 working with weblogic 5.1 very easily (apart from one
major issue which I'll detail and gripe about below ;-)).
I used the instructions posted on the Cocoon list by Philip Aston (which
I've included below) which worked but one change was required.
I got a problem (about 50% of the time) where weblogic would fail todeploy
my cocoon war and also complain about another process listening on ports
7001 / 7002 which simply wasn't true. Turns out that if weblogic isunable
to parse the web.xml that comes with cocoon, I had to replace it with an
example taken from the weblogic examples directory (with the relevant
information included). The way weblogic deals with this - cascading the
error in deploying to affect the port listening is not good.
Once I got this working, I hooked up security etc. in about 10 minutesusing
the servlet 2.2 form-based authentication and am generally very happy with
the weblogic-cocoon integration.
Here are the posted instructions and I'm also attaching my web.xml file asa
reference. I didn't have any problems getting XSP to work (although I'mnot
using it at all - just hitting the samples provided). Even given thepoints
Philip makes below about losing hot deploy abilities, your EJBs should
deploy fine with this turned off.

Humphrey

I've been playing with using Cocoon 1.7.4 in conjunction with BEA
WebLogic Server 5.1. (Stefano and folks, feel free to add any or all
of this to the installation guide. You might also like to add a
success report for MS NT 4.0 SP4, BEA WebLogic Server 5.1 SP3, JDK
1.2.2.)
WLS 5.1 implements Servlet 2.2. so it plugs in easily. Here's a quick
recipe:
- Add the xerces, xalan, fop, servlet, and cocoon JAR files (from the
distribution) to your CLASSPATH. (See below). If you're using Java
2, you should also add the tools.jar file from the JDK distribution
to your CLASSPATH.
- Create a new subdirectory tree of your WLS run time directory
"cocoonwar/WEB-INF" and copy the default web.xml file (from the
src directory of the distribution) there.
- Copy the cocoon.properties from the conf directory of the
distribution to cocoonwar/WEB-INF and updated the web.xml file to
refer to it.
- Copy the samples directory from the distribution to cocoonwar
- Map the web application into the WLS URI name space by adding the
following line to your weblogic.properties file:
weblogic.httpd.webApp.cocoon=cocoonwar
Start WLS, point your browser at
"http://localhost:7001/cocoon/samples/index.xml" and away you go.
Classpaths and XSP:
To support hot deployment of EJB's and Servlets, WebLogic Server
uses its own class loader with its own classpath (the "WebLogic
classpath"). Normally you'd put all the WebLogic Server container
code, JDBC drivers, etc. in your Java CLASSPATH (so that WebLogic
Server can start up) and add all your application code (stuff that
needs to be able to be redeployable) to the WebLogic classpath.
Cocoon is effectively "container" code, and the XSP processor uses
dynamic classloading which only understands the Java CLASSPATH, so
you should put all of the Cocoon jars in CLASSPATH.
The big problem with this is that you can't use any code that loads
from the WebLogic classpath within XSP's. This includes all of the
WebLogic API, so is a PITA. To overcome this, either the way Cocoon
loads classes needs to be modified (Stefano, is this easy?), or the
WebLogic Server class loader needs to be disabled (in which case you
have to be willing to live without hot redeployment).
To disable the WebLogic class loader, put your application classes,
the Cocoon jars and all of the WebLogic Server stuff into the Java
CLASSPATH add -Dweblogic.system.disableWeblogicClassPath=true to the
Java command at the end of you WebLogic start script.

This is not an official BEA response. Please do not send me unrelated
WebLogic support questions - I am unable to answer them. Instead
please use the BEA developer newsgroups - see

I have been trying to get Cocoon working with WL. So far it has been a
lot
of trouble. I am mostly interested in getting XSP to work. The firstthing
you need to do is usethe -Dweblogic.system.disableWeblogicClassPath=true
command to turn off dynamic class loading. The problem I am now havingis
that some of my EJBs won't deploy.
If you don't want XSP Cocoon works well.

I am having problems with Cocoon 2.03 and Weblogic 6.1 SP3, when I try to deploy

This how I got Cocoon 2.04 up and running on WLS 6.1.4
Download the Cocoon source from http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/dist/
Remove all but the following JARs from lib/optional:
commons-jxpath-1.0.jar
jing-20020724.jar
resolver-20020130.jar
servlet_2_2.jar
commons-logging-1.0.jar
jtidy-04aug2000r7-dev.jar
rhino-1.5r3.jar
xt-19991105.jar
Update lib/jars.xml to reflect these changes
Issue build commands:
./build.sh clean (Note: Always clean first!)
./build.sh -Dinclude.webapp.libs=yes -Dexclude.webapp.samples=yes -Dexclude.webapp.documenation=yes
-Dexclude.webapp.javadocs=yes webapp
Copy the following JARs to your WLS instance’s lib directory:
xercesImpl-2.0.0.jar
xml-apis.jar
xalan-2.3.1.jar
xt-19991105.jar
java/lib/tools.jar
Sample of config/SERVER_NAME.setenv
LIB=/path/to/lib
JARS=$LIB/xercesImpl-2.0.0.jar:$LIB/xml-apis.jar:$LIB/xalan-2.3.1.jar:$LIB/xt-19991105.jar:/opt/java1.3/lib/tools.jar
JAVACLASSPATH=$JARS:.:$JAVACLASSPATH
JAVA_HOME=/opt/java1.3
Deploy the resluting cocoon.war and you should have a Cocoon up and running that
can do the XML->HTML Hello World sample. The status page works fine too.
My advice is to launch this stripped configuration first and if needed add more
features later by adding the JARs of your choice to the class path (or add the
to your webapp-build if you are confident that WLS are capable of handling their
manifests).
Good luck

• Anyone suing MySQL with Cocoon?

I'm trying to get started with Cocoon because we have a couple of project where we need to publish reports in PDF and other formats, so I'm trying to get the database connectivity part working. I set up the database for the personnel example, set up the configurations and installed the MySQL driver, but when I try to run it I get the following error:
org.apache.cocoon.ProcessingException: Exception in ServerPagesGenerator.generate(): java.lang.RuntimeException: Could not get the datasource org.apache.avalon.excalibur.datasource.NoValidConnectionException: No valid JdbcConnection class available
I do have the driver in the WEB-INF/lib folder. I've tried two different versions (mm.mysql-2.0.12-bin.jar and mysql-connector-java-3.0.6-stable-bin.jar), both of which work with other Tomcat webapps on the same machine.
Here's the really weird thing: if I enter the wrong password in the datasource description in cocoon.xconf, I get an "Invalid authorization specification" error instead. It seems to me that in order to get this type of error, cocoon must be talking to the database, but that would be impossible if it had no valid JdbcConnection class, right? Or am I misunderstanding how these things work?
I'm running this on Mac OS X, 10.2.6, JDK 1.4.1, MySQL 4.0.12, Cocoon 2.0.4, Tomcat 4.1.18, Apache 1.3.27.

Sorry. I just realized I posted this to the wrong forum. Isn't there anyway to delete a message after you post it?

• Integrating Apex with Cocoon (does it make pdf from taking data from DB)

Friends,
I integrated Apex with appache with cocoon. Its working fine with reports but i want it to work with form on a table or view. The steps below which i have followed for integrating Apex with Cocoon
Steps of pdf Printing of Report with cocoon:
1) Download and unzip the following needed files in D:\Apex_fop directory.
2) Open your command prompt .
Change the directory to D:\Apex_fop\cocoon-2.1.11.
Set the Java_Home environment variable as: set JAVA_HOME= C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_21
then type build war
3) After getting the prompt back as D:>Apex_fop>cocoon-2.1.11>
Copy coocon.war file from the folder D:\Apex_fop\cocoon-2.1.11\build\cocoon.
Paste this file into webapps subdirectory in main tomcat directory having path as D:\APEX_FOP\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps.....place it in the top
level of webapps directory.
4) Now just startup tomcat as D:>APEX_FOP>apache-tomcat-6.0.26>bin>startup.bat
The cocoon.war file will automatically uncompressed as directory.
5) To change the port of apache tomcat , edit apache-tomcat-6.0.26\conf\server.xml & change port attribute of Connector element from 8080 to 8181.
Just check whether Tomcat is running or not as http://localhost:8181/
& to check cocoon type http://localhost:8181/cocoon/
6) Now copy fop_post directory & paste it undes new cocoon directory in webapps having path as D:\APEX_FOP\apache-tomcat-6.0.26\webapps
\cocoon.
7) Now you need to do some apex settings as follows:
In APEX, just log in as ADMIN into apex/apex_admin and went to Instance Settings and did the following:
- Print Serverr: Standard Support
- Print Server Protocol: HTTP
- Print Server Host Address:localhost
- Print Server Port: 8181
- Print Server Script: /cocoon/fop_post
In your APEX application, in the Regions section, Click on the Print link next to your report and do the following settings:
- Enable Report Printing: Yes
- Link Label: Print
- Response Header: Report Settings
- View File As: Attachment
- Output Format: PDF
- Report Layout: Default Report Layout
- Print URL: f?p=&APP_ID.:1:&SESSION.:FLOW_XMLP_OUTPUT_R1063230002781575
8) Open up the Report Page and click Print , You will get the pdf report.
But my requirement is bit different. I have made form on a table or view , so when i am submitting my form the record is getting updated in my database and at the same time a new button is appearing at same page as i have branched it in same page. The new button name is print. I want when i click this print button it should print the record which submitted recently. How can i enable the print functionality on form. Its simple in report but how can it be done on form?
Looking forward for this to know wthr it is achievable or not and if yes what all are the ways?
Thanks in advance for all who is going to post here and to them also who is giving their time in reading my thread
Regards

You could redirect to a report page instead of to the form page. Then simply print the report.
This makes sense. You would have one page for entering the data and another page for displaying and printing it.

• WLS with the HttpClusterServlet or Apache with proxy plug-in?

I'm newbie with WebLogic Server cluster.
Please tell me which is better for load balancing for WLS cluster? WLS with the HttpClusterServlet or Apache HTTP Server Plug-In? And which is recommended for production environment?
Many thanks.

Apache with plug-in, as this is easier configurable.
For the HttpClusterServlet all the configuration goes into web.xml which has to be packaged as a war file and deployed to WebLogic.
When any change is needed you have to edit the web.xml file, package it again and redeploy it.
An example of the Apache plug-in set-up can be found here: http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=7795 (the load balancing section)
Or if you want to use the Oracle Web-Tier (which includes a precompiled Apache HTTP server): http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=7819 (the load balancer section)

Hi,
as read in this thread : Re: Always fail to deploy to server when (Create a Simple EJB Session Bean )
>
This is a known JDeveloper 11g bug. If you look into the packaged EAR file, JDeveloper inserts some entries into the weblogic-application.xml file to register some listeners to perform some internal tasks it needs to deal with.
The issue is that these classes are part of the ADF runtime and installed as part of the provided ADF domain. They are not provided as part of a standard WLS installation. Thus when you deploy a JDeveloper 11g packaged application to a non ADF augmented WLS 10.3 instance, you get a Classloading error on deployment because the specific listener-classes are not available.
The relevant bug # for this is:
BUG#7487416
EAR FILE PACKAGING SETS FIXED DEPENDENCY ON
JPSAPPLICATIONLIFECYCLELISTENER
I believe a fix for this will be provided in the first patchset for JDeveloper 11g.
In the meantime, if you want to workaround it, extract the weblogic-application.xml file from the EAR file, manually remove the listener entries, put the modified file back into the EAR file and then deploy it.

But you should now get another problem, like some of us on this forum : ADFLogger will be missing. If so, please report to this thread for helping us : Standalone WLS server instance deployment failure - missing ADFLogger

• Custom PDF/RTF reports with Cocoon (problem with special characters)

Hi all,
I've setup application (APEX 3.0.1) with some custom PDF reports (using Cocoon 2.1.10),
I'm generating my own hierarchical xml structure, using query with xmlelement() and xmlagg() functions,
I cannot use built-in xml generator, because I need to get master-detail report with sub-grouping.
Everything works fine if data in report doesn't contains special characters like "&",
but Cocoon stops processing XML data when it found special character, following error is written to cocoon log:
INFO (2007-10-02) 12:34.16:828 [sitemap.transformer.log] (/cocoon/fop_post/) http-8888-1/LogTransformer: [startElement] uri=,local=PRZEDMIOT,raw=PRZEDMIOT

This error occur when Cocoon process folowing XML entity:
<PRZEDMIOT>PPHU "T&M" Ltd.</PRZEDMIOT>
I tried to escape "&" character with CDATA section, but it didn't work.
I tested following alternatives:

<PRZEDMIOT>PPHU "T&M" Ltd</PRZEDMIOT>
<PRZEDMIOT><PPHU "T&M" Ltd.></PRZEDMIOT> --remove '<' and '>' characters
<PRZEDMIOT>PPHU "T&M" Ltd.</PRZEDMIOT>

but I still get the same error.
Can anyone help me with this ?
Thanks
Tomasz K.

Ok, I found that only '&' and '%' characters breaks Cocoon processing.
The workaround is to use replace() function and change:
'&' to '%26' and '%' to '%25', but I think that is a dirty way...
Other characters like " - 'double citation' are succesfully escaped with xmlcdata() function.
Perhaps someone know the simpler way to get Master/Detail PDF reports from APEX without using BI Publisher ???
Actually I have page process invoked by button, which generates XML data, post it to Cocoon with UTL_HTTP and save generated PDF to database table (for future use).
The same button invokes branch to URL with download procedure.
Standard APEX reporting is not very usefull for me, because I don't know how to generate "complex" documents, with several grouping sections.
I will be gratefull for any aid.

• Displaying Images with Cocoon

I am a bit of a Cocoon Newbie but I have spent a day or two trying to resolve this issue. Here Goes.
We are starting to use Cocoon 2.1 and we are replacing a Struts based system that extracts information from a Legacy Database (IDMS) and retrieves among other things JPEG images. With the Struts system we couldn't find a way to use a JSP to display the image so we had to use a servlet.
I was under the impression that there might be an easy way to do this in Cocoon but now I'm not so sure. Most of the examples in any Cocoon books are using the inbuilt SQL type features to extract the image but this is not an option for us.
Has anyone created a JPEG image object and then diaplayed it using an XSP or maybe just using a servlet.
I would appreciate any help from someone who has done this or knows how this can be done.

I actually tried both ways of achieving this and both worked (reader method took quite a while)!
Initially I extended ResourceReader (instead of Image Reader). The difficulty came in getting it to read from a session attribute rather than a URL but I achieved this by overriding the Generate method.
I used the JSP code scriptlet from AslanovSergey and put this in a Cocoon Action. The only tweaking I needed was to flush the output !
To answer your question the JPEGdata was already in a byte array so that code was spot on (apart from the flush ).
Thanks for your help.

• SSL between NSAPI and WLS with custom certificate and RequireSSLHostMatch=true fails

I am trying to use SSL for communication between NSAPI and WebLogic
server (server authentication at the NSAPI).
Therefore, a custom server certificate is installed on WLS, containing this
server's hostname. The NSAPI is configured (RequireSSLHostMatch=true) to
check the hostname contained in the certificate against the WebLogicHost
parameter in the "obj.conf" file. The corresponding TrustedCAFile is installed
for NSAPI.
The SSL setup seems to work ok, but when matching the hostname, it seems like
NSAPI is trying to do a string-match against the numeric IP of the WebLogicHost,
not on the hostname as configured in the WebLogicHost parameter.
The relevant entry in the "obj.conf" file:

Service fn=wl-proxy WebLogicHost=btsun2a.muc \
WebLogicPort=7162 \
Debug=ALL \
SecureProxy=ON \
TrustedCAFile=/home/qx13604/wls61/config/testdomain/TC_RootServer_PEM_Class0.pem
RequireSSLHostMatch=true

I am using WLS6.1 with NSAPI (both Solaris). The content of "wlproxy.log" is as
follows.
Any ideas?

I tried some other case and configured a certificate containing
the numeric IP as hostname. The authentication works fine then,
but it wouldn't be nice to hard-code the IP in the certificate
(btw. the WebLogicHost parameter is still given as DNS name, not
as IP address).
Has anyone got a solution for this?

I am trying to use SSL for communication between NSAPI and WebLogic
server (server authentication at the NSAPI).
Therefore, a custom server certificate is installed on WLS, containing
this
server's hostname. The NSAPI is configured (RequireSSLHostMatch=true)
to
check the hostname contained in the certificate against the WebLogicHost
parameter in the "obj.conf" file. The corresponding TrustedCAFile is
installed
for NSAPI.
The SSL setup seems to work ok, but when matching the hostname, it seems
like
NSAPI is trying to do a string-match against the numeric IP of the WebLogicHost,
not on the hostname as configured in the WebLogicHost parameter.
The relevant entry in the "obj.conf" file:

Service fn=wl-proxy WebLogicHost=btsun2a.muc \
WebLogicPort=7162 \
Debug=ALL \
SecureProxy=ON \
TrustedCAFile=/home/qx13604/wls61/config/testdomain/TC_RootServer_PEM_Class0.pem
RequireSSLHostMatch=true

I am using WLS6.1 with NSAPI (both Solaris). The content of "wlproxy.log"
is as
follows.
Any ideas?

• SPNEGO in WLS with standalone java client

Hello All,
Do WLS support SSO with SPNEGO using standalone java client?
/Ed

ok I found the answer.
You can use either MS IE or WebServies...but not standalone java client.

• Slow performance WLS with jdbc pools

Hi all, we have follow configuration of our system: the server with applications and server with jdbc pools. Recently we get strange situation. The server with jdbc pools it seems hung. We get thread dumps for this server and we see that it not hung, but normally work but very slow. Many weblogic.kernel.Default threads were busy by rmi database calls (see below). Anothe strange that before slowing server work nothing enties in server log. Last entry in server log were one hour before slow work. May someone propose why this situation can occure?

-- end of traceHi. It seems you're doing JDBC in an external client, using our RMI-based
JDBC wrappers to the actual connection in the WLS server, and you are
doing LOB retrieval. This means your query goes from your client to
the WLS process, and then to the DBMS, and the LOB data (big) has to go
from the DBMS to the WLS process and then back over RMI to your client.
This is bound to be inefficient. If you can move your JDBC to a JSP or
other serverside class, it will be much faster. Otherwise, if the
management that WLS provides is not strictly necessary for the LOB
manipulation, it may be faster to get that directly from the DBMS to
the external client by using the vendor's JDBC driver directly.

• Oracle 11g with cocoon.war and glassfish pdf problem?

Hi all,
I m install oracle 11g express on CentOS 5.6 OS, oracle apex listener 1.1.2.131.15

Problem begin when I was build cocon xml and deploy cocoon.war on glassfish,
adding fop_post on cocoon/fop_post (as describe on http://carlback.blogspot.com/2007/03/apex-cocoon-pdf-and-more.html) but pdf dont work!
(I was setting all this steps on open suse 11.2-32 byte machine and ubuntu 8.04-32 byte and pdf work ok )
Is there any idea whats happen whith this pdf error?
Is problem with 64 byte some specific settings, with java jdk, cocoon, glassfish or something on oracle 11g apex ?

I was installing on OpenSuse 11.3 oracle 11g 64 based OS and oracle
next I was download and unzip and build cocoon2.1.11 as bash build.sh war -- and in build folder theres make cocoon.war
next I was download apex listener and from command line I was type java -jar apex.war
next download and build glassfish v2 and this two war files I was deploy on server, and making username as describe
in apex listener conf documentations, so apex working good over glassfish only cocoon cant create pdf

• Mvdemo on WLS with empty HTML5 demos ?

Hi Team,
I deployed the mapviewer.ear and mvdemo.war (the war was deployed directly) on WLS 10.3.6 and
can check the well known and new Oracle Maps demos.
But the HTML5 demo main side starts with complete empty frames.
How can I activate these HTML5 demos on WLS ?
These demos work perfectly on the Glassfish installation.
Best Regards
Friedhold

Sankaram,
You are correct. I updated Captivate and used the HTML5 tracker to eliminate features that weren't compatible. Now the new files are working fine for me on the Android using Chrome.
Do you know of when Captivate HTML5 output will be supported on the native Android Browser? Also how does Captivate HTML5 output work with Windows 8.1 devices?
