Word to Pages Question

I have to take a computer class that introduces some "legal writing" formats, but it's designed for Word. I have Pages so I have to make due, but I'm not sure how to do one thing..... We are given a document to edit and we are told to switch the document to "normal view". I know how to do this in Word, but the help section in Pages did not produce a match. Is it even possible to do this with Pages? Thanks so much for your help and suggestions!

"normal view" means something in Word but means nothing in Pages.
The normal view, in Pages, is the one used by default.

  • Undo auto-correction for typing particular words into Pages

This is starting to drive me nuts - whenever I type the word "march" Pages automatically capitalizes it to "March". Is there any way to stop it from capitalizing this word without turning off auto capitalizing?
I realise it may sound trivial but I am using this word a fair bit and it just takes up time having to constantly go back and correct it, then I have to be careful not to change the sentence or it auto-corrects back again.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

(K_Gal: This primarily addresses RHPC's issue, but does include some comments regarding yours)
    B
    RHPC:
Yours is a different issue than that described in the initial post in this thread.
Pages has several auto-correction features, all set in the auto-correction pane of Pages Preferences. The two indicated by the arrows are the significant ones in this thread as started and in your hijack of this thread.
Fix capitalization (blue arrow) applies a format (CAPITAL or UPPER) to the initial letters of 'sentences' and words identified as 'proper nouns' (such as "March") in the spelling dictionary. It performs no action on 'words' that have been typed with initial capitals.
In the examples above, the first two lines were typed with 'Fix capitalization' unchecked. The second pair of lines were typed using exactly the same keystrokes as the first, but with 'Fix capitalization' checked. Note that both occurrences of 'will' are the same in each set.
"Automatically use spell checker suggestions" (red arrow) does precisely what it says: If a 'word' is not found in the spelling dictionary, the spell checker will make a 'best guess' and suggest that as a possible replacement. If the 'Automatically use…" box is checked, then Pages will immediately accept the first suggestion, replacing the 'questionable word' with the spell checkers first ('best') suggestion.
There are at least two solutions to this issue:
Uncheck the box and don't use auto-correction. (works for either of these issues)
Teach the spellchecker the correct spelling of the Polish name. (does not work in the case of march/March, which is part of the base dictionary)
    To do this:
Go Pages (menu) > Preferences... Auto-Correction
    Uncheck the "Automatically use…" box.
    Close Preferences
Open a new Pages word processing document.
    Type the Polish name.
Ensure that the spelling and capitalization is correct.
Right click on the name and choose Learn Spelling.
    Go Pages > Preferences… Auto-Correction
    Recheck the "Automatically use…" box
    Close Preferences.
    Done.
Pages (and other applications using the system's spell checker dictionary) will now recognize the spelling of this name and will not 'correct' it.
(K_Gal: Unfortunately, when I tried this on "march" the contextual menu did not include the Learn Spelling option , probably because the dictionary already 'knew' how to spell "March". I'd suggest using the Provide Pages Feedback item in the Pages message to report this to apple, and request a feature enhancement to the Fix capitalization feature.)

  • Word over Pages Preference

I have both word and pages loaded on my Mac and at the moment every time I open a document it's opening it in Pages. How can I change the preference so that all documents open automatically in word and not pages?
The same applies to Excel and Numbers.
    Many thanks

Not really sure what your question has to do with compatibility issues between Mac OS and Windows...the focus of this forum, but you can find your answer here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2291

I am changing from Word to Pages. I have created my custom template with all my styles etc and that is what comes up when I go for a New Document. Fine. How do I get it to use the same Custom Template when I use Pages to open a Word document?

The template is a document in itself, it is not applied to an existing document whether it is a Pages document or a Word document converted to a Pages document.
You would need to either copy and paste content, using existing styles, or apply the styles to the converted Word document.
You can Import the Styles from an existing document and those imported Styles can be used to override the current document's styles:
Menu > Format > Import Styles
The process is simplified if the styles use the same names, otherwise you will need to delete the style you don't want and replace it with the one that you do want when asked, then the substitution is pretty straightforward.

  • Why don't my pdf forms import into Word or Pages properly?

Why is it that when I create a form in Acrobat Pro, fill it out and save it as a pdf file, and then import or place the saved file in either a Word or Pages document that ONLY the form fields are visible and not the filled in data?  I've tried everything I know and it happens each time.  Thanks.

Have you actually tried to do it in a PC Version.  Usually it’s the other way round. Usually something can be done with little effort in PC Version, and not in Mac version. Or is PIA to do in the Mac version. Adobe takes as little effort as possibly with the Mac version of any of their products. They and many companies still have  the notion for anyone that wants to do serious work, you use a PC. Mac's are considered play toys.
If given the proper software with equal features a Mac is more than capable of handling any job a PC can.

  • Dante font used in manuscript - when I try to save as a pdf document in Microsoft Word whole pages change their look, with wide gaps forming between certain paragraphs or sections. This does not happen with other fonts.

Dante font used in manuscript … when I try to save as a pdf document in Microsoft Word whole pages change their look, with wide gaps forming between certain paragraphs or sections. This does not happen with other fonts.

    OK, we've got it!
What is happening is that when you use Microsoft's save as PDF in Word, the font isn't embedded even though the font is tagged to allow embedding. Furthermore, Microsoft doesn't properly put the font name into the PDF file such that Acrobat or Reader can readily find the font installed on your system such that the text can be properly displayed and/or printed. Acrobat and Reader attempt to display and/or print the text using a “substitution font” and of course, as they say, YMMV (“your mileage may vary”)!
I personally submitted the report of this problem (both the embedding and the font name problem) to Microsoft. They acknowledge the bug, tried a fix and provided me a build with it, but it wasn't right. Maybe they will ultimately fix it, maybe they won't. We don't know yet. We do know that if it is fixed, it will be fixed only for Office 2013 (problem occurs with all Office applications since they use the same PDF generation code) and thus such a fix won't help you.
Adobe Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Pro  both provide an Adobe PDFMaker plug-in to Office applications (including full support for Office 2010) that adds an Acrobat Toolbar as well as a Save as Adobe PDF menu item. The resultant PDF file fully supports embedding of OpenType CFF, TrueType, and Type 1 fonts and in many other ways produces much superior PDF with a full range of PDF generation options not available with the Microsoft PDF. (Note that beginning with Office 2013, Microsoft does not support Type 1 fonts in Office documents at all, even for existing documents!) The Acrobat Office functions are widely used and respected in the end user community and whatever “issues” there are (all software has “issues” of some type - it is a matter of how many and how severe), you should be in much better shape for PDF production that with what you currently are using.
Good luck and let us know if this resolves your problems. (Note that you can download and install a free fully-functional 30 trial of Acrobat Pro to assure that it meets your needs! You can then buy a license and activate what you already have installed.)

  • MS Word to Pages Conversion Issues

Hello, I recently added the MS Office software (PowerPoint, Word, etc), and I'm having issues with converting back from MS Word to Pages. The document will convert from Word to Pages, but when I open it in Pages the font has changed and there are weird symbols in place of words. I actually prefer using Pages to write and edit my documents....
    Please help! Thank you!

Yes, but the issue is that as long as I have Word on my computer, the documents that were once Pages documents are now in Word. Even when I reset the 'default' back to Pages, what the documents were orginally created in, the documents don't properly convert back to Pages. So, I'm wondering if I remove/uninstall MS Word all together if that will look after the problem...

  • Diff page count from Word to Pages?

    Hi,
I just imported a text, I had originally written in MS Word, into Pages.
I'm just wondering why the document went from 31 pages in Word to 26 in Pages?
I checked everything and as far as I can tell, the fonts, sizes, spaces and page setup have all the same configurations.
So I don't get why I have fewer pages?
If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
    Thanks

Although the font name & size may be the same, they may not be from the same foundry & will display differently. And if the Word document came from a PC, the difference can be even greater. But I think there is just a difference between Word/Microsoft programs & other programs. I have noticed the same issues between a Word document on my Mac & the same document opened in Pages or AppleWorks. Pages & AppleWorks are consistent, Word is not. And I make sure the font, size etc. is the same.

  • Text Replacement in scanned page question

I must be doing something incredibly wrong because I cannot get text to be replaced in a scanned OCR document. I am using Acrobat Pro 9.
Before getting to that, let me ask this question: If I am scanning a document created using a readily available font like Times New Roman, why does Acrobat even bother using the scanned page for displaying text? It knows the text, the OCR was 100% accurate. Why not replace the 300 dpi scanned bitmap image with real, vector-based text? I don't understand that.
OK, now to just trying to replace what amounts to fuzzy looking text with vector text. I've read how to replace text using Tools-> Advanced Editing-> TouchUp Text Tool where I select text, right click on it, go to properties and change the text. Here's what happens when I do that:
First off, the defaults in the properties dialog are set to no fill and no stroke. Why is that? If you're changing your font, wouldn't you want it to show?
After making a selection and closing the dialog, the text indeed changes, but the original, fuzzy text is there as well. And, as there are slight differences in font size, the page is virtually unreadable as it has the appearance of being printed twice with different alignments each time.
This is, of course, quite useless. I MUST be doing something wrong.
Of course, taking even this course of action is pretty frustrating, as the document I'm working on has many statements in bold, so doing a global font change isn't even practical. I really just wish acrobat would know that it can display vector text from the get-go, and forego the bitmapped text altogether.
Thanks, I hope my frustration isn't too evident!

  • How to copy the bullet point format/style from MS Word to Pages?

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to make the swap from Mac Word to Pages but the one thing that frustrates me so much to the point of not using Pages is the bullet point system.
In Word the set spacings are exactly how I want them - whereas in Pages, everything is tighter - there is less space between the margin and the point, the point and the text etc.
I've painstakingly inserted all the spacings from Word into Pages and saved it as a "style" but it just reverts back to the default positioning when I open up a new document and select my saved style.
Any ideas / a magic tool to just copy the style from Word? It's such a shame because Pages is a much slicker programme than Word and I really want to use it but as a student, bullet points are my world.
    Thanks,
    James

Hi Peter, thanks for your reply.
Yeah I get the font and formatting for the text copied no problem when copying but I'm talking about from scratch in a new document, I insert a bullet point and even when selecting my saved style, it just reverts back to the default.
I agree, massive pain. It is the only thing stopping me from making the full switch now iCloud Drive is getting close to Dropbox.
Am I a misguided fool for thinking there's a patch or modification of some description that can copy the default bullet spacings from Word and create a new style following them in Pages?
    Thanks, James

Try just Opening the Word .doc from within Pages and see if that gets closer to what you want, then copy the chapter you want from the Pages version.

  • Bug: pressing backspace to delete a word in Pages for iOS automatically deletes space before word

    Hi guys,
When I delete a word in Pages for iOS 7 character-by-character, the deletion automatically includes the space before the word, even if I don't initiate a keypress for that space. This is sporadic in that it consistently occurs in some sections of text (usually at the end of lines) and not in others, in paragraphs with custom Styles and in paragraphs with default Styles alike.
If the bug happened consistently, I could probably by habit overcome this extra deletion. However, since it does not happen in every circumstance, it's unpredictable and as such very disruptive to my workflow.
This occurs in new documents with no formatting. I've also tried Resetting All Settings, restoring the app through the Settings menu, and deleting and re-downloading the app from the App Store. It occurs both when I use my Bluetooth wireless keyboard (Logitech) and when I use the iPad Mini's OS keyboard.
I really don't want to restore my entire iPad just to fix this problem, as I think it's an app-based bug (the problem does not happen at all in any other text app).
This Pages version is 1.7.2, and I'm using iOS 7.0.2 on an iPad Mini WiFi only.
Could anyone with a similar setup try this out? I can't be the only one...right?

I am experiencing this as well. In another thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5374836) it appears someone contacted support about it and was told this is expected behavior.
For me, this will cause me to stop using Pages. It's extremely aggravating.

  • Endnote bibliography transfer from word to page not aligned?

I have a word document with endnote bibliography that I need to transfer to my page document which also has its own bibliography. Somehow, after I copy and paste the content from word to page, the bibliography is not coordinate. It became two separate parts (e.g. one section from word and the other from page. These two sections are not alphabaticlally arranged and combined as one bibliography) How can I make it coordinate with each other?  Thanks!!
