Workflow between video editing programs? How should I transfer?

I am new to video editing and have a general question about exporting work between programs. Let's say I have footage I want to cut together in premiere, edit/add audio in audition, and color correct in speedgrade.
How should I jump around programs. Is there a recommended order I go? (i.e cut first, color correct, the audio?)
And if I export to video file each time I save and import to a new program do I lose quality?
I may be over thinking but I want to make sure I use all the programs most efficiently.

I know it can all be kind of confusing at first ... um ... well, let's say after a year-plus of doing this daily, it can still be confusing.
A bit of help ... first, within the Adobe suite of video programs, they don't re-write the base video files on saving, ONLY the instructions as to what to DO with those frames. So no, you don't lose any quality or degrade your video files by saving project steps and states. If you export, yes they do make a new file at the settings you specify, but the only time you should need to export is to create the final "shipping" product.
A typical "flow" would be cut in PrPro to "lock", Direct Link the project to Speedgrade for color corrections & grading, save that back to PrPro, then send the audio to Audition & relink back into PrPro, then export through AME. Basic level.
A lot of us though are finding that the shift to Sg for coloring is so quick we don't always edit to "lock" in PrPro, as especially when working with multiple sequences & nesting in a project, we'll just take a sequence over to work it in Sg, or perhaps only to see what can be done with a clip. It's that easy & quick, no creating edl's or DPX output, just a menu option & you're in Sg, click an icon & you're back in PrPro.
Hope this helps a bit. Oh ... one thing ... "auto-save" is a GREAT thing in all these programs, but in a Direct Link PrPro to Sg session, do manual saves in Sg as it doesn't do autosaves every few minutes in that use.

    If you think you are beyond iMovie, then FCE4 is your next step up. It has significantly more capabilities than iMovie, and it has a comparatively higher learning curve, so be prepared for that. The rewards, however, are that you have much greater creative control over your projects.
    You did not say what level of experience you have or what kind of video editing you want to do. FCE was designed for working with DV, HDV and AVCHD media; but the interface and all the basic editing features are identical in FCE4 and FCS2, so by learning FCE4 you would be on the right path to 'step up' to FCS sometime in the future.
    What 'limitations' do you think you will be frustrated by? For people 'starting out' it's hard to imagine what limitations FCE4 would present ...

    Thanks for the response.   My system is Windows 7 with a painfully slow ATT
    high speed connection.
    I got the "Cloud" including CS6 , yesterday,after a chat with a nice Indian
    fellow who called me back from Bombay.  Surprisingly he was looking forward
    to Thanksgiving too but probably because he gets a day off.
    I now have the Adobe Premiere Pro loaded (it took nine hours) and
    installed.  Now I'm starting the tutorials.

    Hey I like to shot and edit movies in my spare time and Ihave a 2006 Macbook and I've tried to install Final Cut Pro X and Final CutStudio 3 only to find unsucessfully that my computer doesn't support them. So Myquestion Are there any good video editing program out there besides the FinalCut Series and Imovie which I have?

    You may want to look at Avid's Media Composer. Our facility uses Adobe products. For editing, we're currently using Final Cut Studio 3. At the moment, we're "waiting it out" for the next best choice.

    I came from the studio environment years ago.  Adobe Premiere is a very powerful editing suite.  But with power comes complexity.  You will experience a steep learning curve, but one that ultimately pays in benefits.  Each time you start the program it will use the internet to confirm you are an authorized user.
    In Premiere Pro, your editing is done on the native files in a non-destructive manner.  there is no low-resolution version.  That said, you can change the resolution of your preview screens if your PC is under powered.  Rendering of previews happen in the background, aided by the Mecury GPU capability.  Once your editing is done, you export the project to a new file of the format you seek as output.  Edit once, output many.
    Video and audio tracks are relatively unlimited in number.
    JPG and PNG are native still files.
    There is guidance elsewhere on this web site as to the hardware you need to run the software--consider these to be minimums, not optimum.
    Adobe is marketing its Creative Cloud suite of applications as a subscription basis. You will download the programs you want to use onto your hardware.  Since you have a subscription, moving the subscription to another machine is something you can do yourself.  Adobe gets involved only if you activate it on more computers than your license allows.  The program does give you option to deactivate the installation so as to enable it being relocated.

    Yes.
    It's 64 bit only software so you need a 64 bit processor and 64 bit operating system to run it.
    If you're running Win 7 32 bit or Win8 32 bit then you won't see Premiere Pro in the list of available Cloud apps. Same goes for After Effects and other video related apps.

    Thanks for getting back with me so promptly.  It has taken me this time to connect with the proper people to find out the information you requested.
    The camera used to film the class was a Panasonic AG-HMC40P, owned by a local cable TV station; they use Kodak video encoding software, and a SD card was used to store the video.   The file extension is .mts, and the mime file is MPEG 2 transport.  He said I probably need an AVCHD converter, and the Mac app store lists 8 of those options, 4 free and 4 for up to $9.99.  He said I'll also need a converter for later plans of posting on YouTube or on the website, and while some of those in the app store might work for the later needs, he knows one app called "Compressor" that would work for the uploading later.  He also suggested I could try renaming the .mts file to .MP2T, but he wasn't sure that would work.
    They don't work with Macs at the studio, but I had thought I could have some lessons there in editing, and apply what I learned to my iMac and iMovie.
    First, though, I have to be able to see it and review it!

    What export format creates an exact digital copy of mini-dv video which can be recognised and imported by Windows video editors?
    I need to give editable copies of DV to Windows users, The lowest common denominator is Windows Movie Maker, which does not recognise .dv files created by copying from the project's Media folder, or Sharing a Movie to DV stream.
    I want to burn data DVDs with clips or complete projects from iMovie which are equivalent to copying back to mini-DV tapes.
    Is Share to AVI my only option?
    If so, is there any loss in quality?

    after spending a few minutes on the net concerning that WindowMovieMaker, my guess is:
    WMM does NOT accept a "file.dv" ...
    but is does accept that same dv within an avi container... "file.avi"
    avi and mov are just containers, not formats, as a box of chocolate, "wrappers" for many codecs...
    try to export your clips as avi, and choose under compressor "DV"...- give that a try...
    DV is the same codec which is in use on miniDV tapes, and the same, iM uses internally... so, it should be no quality loss.. just a "wrapping"...

    Software: Using Adobe CS 6 software,
    A typical project for me:
    Resolution 1000 x 563px, 10 minutes long, to be played/viewed on the Web.
    My workflow and settings in more detail:
    • I usually start in After Effects then move the AE comps into Premiere and edit with many other clips, then export to ProRes, finally I compress that ProRes file (Adobe Media Encoder) to a variety of necessary formats.
    I start with After Effects and create about 20 or 30 projects, each is anywhere from 5 seconds to 30 seconds long.
    I start a new Premier Project (Preview Files set to QT, H.264, 1000x563px) and import the AE comps directly into Premiere.Premiere has to render my AE comps but I like the flexibility of being able to "go-back" and alter my AE file, it auto updates in Premiere
    I edit all my clips in Premiere, my entire timeline is rendered and has the Green Line.Anytime I close my project and reopen it. Premiere takes about 5-10 minutes to load the project.  Premiere initially opens quickly but takes a long time to link up all the rendered preview files.  This seems way too long
    Upon finalizing my project in Premiere I export out to ProRes 422.
    Settings For this is: Export Video, Same Resolution as project, Quality 100%, 30fps, Progressive, Square Pix, 24bit, Use Max Render Quality, Use Frame Blending.
    For my 10 minute animation this takes about 45 minutes. I feel like that's OK.  My AE clips can be a bit heavy with stills, particles, effete and etc
    This results in about a 11GB ProRes file.  Does that sound right?
    I now have a fantastic ProRes  copy of my hard earned work.... but I need to encode it to get it on the web, to clients, to friends, to the Universe.
    I import this file into Adobe Media Encoder.  I need to get this into 3 different formats, .H264, FLV and .MP4.  This processes usually take about 12 hrs for me.  Seems too long.
    MP4 settings: Multiplexer MP4/ Standard, Dimensions I can't get them above 786x524 this is frustrating, Level: Advanced Level 5, VBR 1pass 1,500
    FLV Settings: Format FLV, Dimensions 1000x563, VBR 2 pass, Bitrate 1,200, default target rates and Key Frame
    h.264 settings: Codec H.264, Dimensions 1000x563, 30fps, Progressive, Square Pix, Optimized Stills, Bit Rate 1,500
    That's about it.

    You're missing the JSTL JAR's in the classpath.

    Well, in my opinion, it all comes down to speed. There are a lot of editors that swear that working with footage on your system drive will do all sorts of horrible things, cause crashes, etc. Really its a bunch a malarkey. The most it will do is slow you down when your system needs access to the drive. Bandwidth is bandwidth is bandwidth - its all the same. If working with video on your system drive caused crashes, so would doing thousands of other things and we would all have dumped apple long ago for Microsoft or linux.
    Here's what I tend to get for sustained read speed on various drives (ie reading a few large files like video files):
    USB 2.0: 25 - 30 MB/sec. Drive RPM doesn't matter much since USB is limiting factor, unless you're running a system.
    Firewire 400: 28 - 34 MB/sec.  Drive RPM doesn't matter much since FW is limiting factor
    Firewire 800: 55 - 60 MB/sec.  Drive RPM doesn't matter much since FW is limiting factor
    internal drive on SATA II or III connection, or USB 3.0 external drive:
        7200 RPM: ~100 MB/sec
        5400 RPM (most laptop drives): probably ~70-80 MB/sec
    SSD: 250-500 MB/sec if installed internally or over USB 3. USB 2 or firewire connection for an SSD is a waste of SSD speed *except* that they have fantasticly fast random access for reading many small files, so I got a really fast launching system in an experiment installing a system on an SSD and connecting it via FW 800 - but that's not relevant here
    so - to make a short story long - do whatever works for you. avoid using USB 2.0 or firewire 400 drives if you're editing HD - you can't play transcoded ProRes 1080p footage from them reliably. And once you have more than one clip overlapping, like at cross dissolves, you're sunk. You're internal drive is likely much faster, even with the overhead of the system using it too.
    Blackmagic Disk Speed Test on the app store is a good HD speed tester. Ignore all the video specific stuff at the bottom - its mostly for uncompressed video, which I doubt you're working with.
    Since i have a recent macbook pro (late 2011) and my edits are usually not more dense than 3 layers of video at a time (mostly concert video rather than narrative film), I actually almost never transcode, or even render - and this is for 1080p HD video - because FCP X is so good at playing the imported original h.264 files. I store my media I'm working with on my internal laptop drive (which i upgraded to a 7200 RPM) or a FW 800 7200 RPM external drive.
    h.264 files from the camera are much smaller than transcoded ProRes files, so they will play back from USB 2 or firewire 400 drives, but I would only do it in a pinch.

    I need to transfer voice files from a remote machine to a local machine (in internet). I am unable to decide which method should I use for this?
    I have options like using Tomcat(where the file will have to be first transferred from the remote machine to the Tomcat server and then to the local machine).
    Secondly,I can transfer the file from the remote machine to the ftp server and then to the local machine.
    Third,I can use JSSE for the transfer.(I do not have much idea about this)
    Please suggest what I should do(or any other protocol I can implement) as security is also a big issue.

    convert to Quicktime which will give you a mov file, use the H264 CODEC at a high data rate, this is the same as an MP4

  • New MBP, how should I transfer my system?

    I have a new MBP coming tomorow, and I am getting ready to do the big switch. Generally, when I get a new computer I do a clean reinstall of everything. However, I am working on a pretty new installation on my current MBP, and I am wondering if it is really necessary to start from scratch this time around. I am on an core 2 intel now, moving to an i7. So, I am wondering if I can just do a restore from a carbon copy cloner clone. I suppose I could use setup assistant, but like I said, I've never done that before because I've always done a new installation. I'd like to get up and running quickly because I don't have a lot of time this week, so that's why I'm looking at other options. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    No; your Mac will come with just OSX and the default Apple apps (and iLife) on it; no user accounts, and default configuration and preferences.
    +Setup Assistant+ has been greatly improved for Snow Leopard; even transferring from an elderly PPC Mac works fine.
    As noted in the link, there are a few cases of complex apps that need to be reinstalled, and/or serial numbers that have to be re-entered, but that's quite rare.
