Working Sample Code: File Download Servlet

Pardon the cross-posting (Java Servlet Technology), but when I was researching this problem I found alot of people asking this question in here as well as in the servlet forum. So I thought this code would be helpful here too.
Here is a complete working servlet for downloading virtually any type of file to a browser.
It uses a file called application.properties to specify the location of the folder where the files to be downloaded reside. Of course you could modify this to allow the users to select the location as well.
A sample URL to call the Servlet would look like this:
http://localhost/website/servlet/DownloadAssistant?YourFileName.ext
I tested this with varying filenames. It did have some issues if the file contained special characters like # symbol. This should be manageable however.
Hope someone finds this useful.

  • Need urgent help on file download servlet problem in Internet Explore

    I have trouble to make my download servlet work in Internet Explore. I have gone through all the previous postings and done some research on the internet, but still can't figure out the solution. <br>
    I have a jsp page called "download.jsp" which contains a URL to download a file from the server, and I wrote a servlet (called DownloadServlet) to look up the corresponding file from the database based on the URL and write the file to the HTTP output to send it back to the browser. <br>
    the URL in download.jsp is coded like <a href="/download/<%= currentDoc.doc_id %>/<%= currentDoc.name %>">on the browser, it will be sth like , the number 87 is my internal unique number for a file, and "myfile.doc" is the real document name. <br>
    in my web.xml, "/download/" is mapped to DownloadServlet <br>
    the downloadServlet.java looks like
    tem_name = ... //read DB for file name
    // set content type
    if ( tmp_name.endsWith(".doc")) {
    response.setContentType("application/msword");
    else if ( tmp_name.endsWith(".pdf")){
    response.setContentType("application/pdf");
    else if ( tmp_name.endsWith(".ppt")){
    response.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-powerpoint");
    else if ( tmp_name.endsWith(".xls")){
    response.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel");
    else {
    response.setContentType("application/download");
    // set HTTP header
    response.setHeader("Content-Disposition",
    "attachment; filename=\""+tmp_name+"\"");
    OutputStream os = response.getOutputStream();
    //read local file and write back to browser
    int i;
    while ((i = is.read()) != -1) {
    os.write (i);
    os.flush();
    Everything works fine in Netscape 7.0, when I click on the link, Netscape prompts me to choose "open using Word" or "save this file to disk". That's exactly the behavior I want. <br>
    However in IE 5.50, the behavior is VERY STRANGE.
    First, when I click on the URL, the popup window asks me to "open the file from its current location" or "save the file to disk". It also says "You have chosen to download a file from this location, ...(some url).. from localhost"
    (1) If I choose "save the file to disk", it will save the rendered "download.jsp" (ie, the currect page with URL I just clicked, which isn't what I want).
    (2)But if I choose "open the file from its current location", the 2nd popup window replaces the 1st, which also has the "Open ..." and "Save.." options, but it says "You have chosen to download a file from this location, MYFILE.doc from localhost". (notice it shows the correct file name now)
    (3) If I choose "Save..." on the 2nd window, IE will save the correct file which is "myfile.doc"; if I choose "Open ...", a 3rd replaces the 2nd window, and they look the same, and when I choose "Open..." on the 3rd window, IE will use Word to open it.
    any ideas?
    </a>

    Did you find a solution to this problem? I've been wrestling with the same issues for the past six months. Nothing I try seems to work. I've tried setting the contentLength(), inline vs. attachments, different write algorythms, etc. I don't get the suggestion to rename the servlet to a pdf file.

    Instead of hardcoding the directory where the files are located, I keep that in a file called application.properties.
    there is a property there which looks like this
    app.directory=C:\\Temp\Files\\
    It's easier to change this rather than recompiling the servlet.
    I also use that file to hold things like the JDBC driver I will be using as well as other application specific properties I don't want to hardcode.

  • IPhone SDK - Sample code to download a file in a thread

    I am looking for a starting point to implement a download manager. My requirements are simple.
    I want to show a UIProgressView in a view controller and update it as i download file(s) from the internet. The view will have a cancel button, so the view cannot block on downloading the files. The cancel should cancel the download thread in such a way that the thread can cleanup if required.
    To achieve this i guess i will have to download the file(s) in a separate thread and then figure out a way to update the progress bar in the UI thread based on the bytes downloaded from the web.
    Can someone point me to code sample which demonstrates this interaction OR help me with their suggestions?
    Thanks in advnace,
    Shiva

    NSURLRequest is asynchronous by default, so really all you need to do is prepare your NSURLRequests, fire them all off, and then in the delegate you can update the progress bar as each of them returns.
    I'd suggest just having the progress bar update based on how many requests have completed out of the full set, rather than based on the number of bytes downloaded. NSURLResponse doesn't give you byte-by-byte callbacks, so it's quite hard to work out how far along an individual request has progressed.
    Read the URL Loading Scheme document in the API - it's full of example code that you can use.

  • Performance issues in file download servlet

            FileInputStream in = null;
            ServletOutputStream sos = res.getOutputStream();
              File f = new File(path);
              if(f.exists())  {

                int length = (int)f.length();
                byte[] input = new byte[length];
                res.setContentType ("application/octet-stream");
                res.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=\""+fileName+"\"");
                res.setContentLength(length);
                if(length != 0) {
                  while ((in != null) && ((length = in.read(input)) != -1))  {   // read
                    sos.write(input,0, input.length);   // write
              }Hi experts, the above is a block of code that sends a file to a client machine through servlet. One problem I am having now is that it frequently cause the server to run out of memory. Is it because of the way I read the FileInputStream is not efficient?
                byte[] input = new byte[length];
                if(length != 0) {
                  while ((in != null) && ((length = in.read(input)) != -1))  {   // read
                    sos.write(input,0, input.length);   // write
                  }It seems that my code reads an entire file into memory before it writes anything to the client, so when there are many people downloading files, the server will run out of memory. Is it true?
    I am not very familiar with the read() and write() methods in the inputstream and output stream classes. So I hope someone here can tell me whether the above code is indeed the cause of the problem. If not, then I can troubleshoot my other servlets and JSPs.
    Thanks!

    try not to create a byte[] with the file size
    try to make it a fix one
    e.g.new byte[1024]
    treat it as a package to sendThanks. But is 1024 too small a size for sending files throught the internet? What is the best size to used?

  • Procedure/sample code to download alv output in HTM format & mail to user.

    Hello Experts,
    I've a requirement to run the Alv report at background. But i need to download the alv output in HTM fomat because it has subtotal values & look wise downloaded HTM format will be same as that of ALV output. Then send the attachment through mail to users. I'm not intersted in  downloading  internal table dierctly to HTM format.
    Will the code for alv display & downloading in HTM format & forwarding via email  is all done in one single  program or in 2 differnt programs . pls guide me on this.
    I'm using FM REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY to display output with subtotals.
    Pls anyone there suggest me the steps to download ALV output in HTM format & the forward the same  to user ID through Lotus notes.
    Regards
    Devika.S

    Hi,
    This can be achieved without coding .
    Fore ground Scenario:
    1. Downloading as HTM . In foreground you can do this by using Export---> Local file
    option in ALV grid.
    Background Scenario:
    2. In background while sending mail , You have to achieve the same through customisation settings as wexplained below.
    In SM36 -- > Spool List Recipient, give the reciepient id and click on copy. Now when the Background job will be finished,
    the reciepient mentioned above will recieve the mail , but in ALI format.
    To convert the same to HTM format, you need to do customisation changes in SCOT
    goto SCOT>Expant the node INT>Double click on Email-->Beside Internet we have SET tab , click on that -->
    select the radio button " all formats except the following ">In the near by box type ALI>then click on the tick Mark.
    Then go to SCOT>Settings>Conversion Rules-->there
    create a new row with, Format->ALI , To Format->HTM , Ranking 1, FM -> SX_OBJECT_CONVERT_ALI_HTM.
    Now when the mail will be sent, it will not go in ALI, but in HTM format.
    Hope this helps you out.

  • Where to put the source code files of servlets

              Hello All,
              Normally, jsp pages are put under the WEB-INF directory. This makes them secure.

    Hi Abhishek,
              You don't need to put servlet's source code to the war.
              All you need to put there is compiled code. Files containing
              compiled code end with .class.

    When doOpenFile is fired the args are correct, because I have debug it in console. But I think the problem is with the JSX file, sure I'm doing something wrong.
    Anybody could guide me about it?

I have created the page, added the Portlet Faces Bridge library to the project, created the portlet.xml, copied and pasted and configured the Portlet.xml contents for my Portlet. Deployment is to a local yet standalone WebCenter containing OC4J instance. Note: deploying to the preconfigured OC4J also did not work.
    When I register the Portletproducer, consume the portlet in an otherwise empty JSF page and run that page, I get the Portlet Unavailable message in the page. The error log is shown below.
    I am wondering where to go from here, what can I try to analyze? And also: is there a working sample available for download of an ADF Faces based portlet that can successfully be consumed by an application?

    Hello
    I am trying to portlize an hello world ADF application but am unable to do so because of the situation describe below. I have tried all the options given on this post but nothing seems to resolve the issue.
    I have followed the instructions of portelizing at http://download-east.oracle.com/otndocs/tech/webcenter/files/owcs_10132_bridge_viewlet.html
    A simple portlets without AFD works fine in oc4h or webcenter or jboss, but when I include ADF in the project then none of the application server or the container works
    I am using jdeveloper 10.1.3.2.0 and the embedded webcenter oc4j for this test
    I have two projects
    1) ui where the ADF appplication is and
    2) test1 where the producer is registered and is tested
    In ui I have a simple jsp page untitled1.jsp with just one adf component (ADF Command Link)
    Here is the source of untitled1.jsp

  • Working sample of JSTL:xml?

    Can someone send me a working sample war file using jstl:xml under JSTL 1.1/tomcat 5?
    I think my JSP is right, but I tried it on tomcat-5.5.4, 5.0.28 with JDK1.4.2, JDK1.5.0. All of them give me [#document: null] result. There must be something wrong in my configuration.
    If someone can send me a working war file, I would really appreciate.
    My email address: [email protected]
    Thanks!

    Okay, it is clear to me, you are thinking something that may be working is not, because you are testing incorrectly.
    Doing a c:out of the variable returned from <xml:parse> and getting [#document:  null] is not a sign that the xml document wasn't parsed. I am not sure exatly what the null part of the output means but...
    Look at this code:
    //Sidebar.xml
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <home_bar>
        <bar_width>250</bar_width>

    Anyway, from the output, you can see in the comment inside the HTML source that the c:out for the parsed XML file reads [#document: null]. However, the XML was correctly parsed and generated the proper sidebar.
    I know that if you do something like this:
    <x:set var="theBar" select="$sideBar/home_bar"/>
    <c:out value="${theBar}"/> you get [[home_bar: null]].
    Also, if you do:
    <x:out select="$sideBar"/> you will get all the data from the xml file (not the tags) printed out.

    Hi, Thank u.
    Sorry, I forgot to attach a code. Here it is.
    Actually i need to upload a file to a remote server and download it from a server to my machine. I'm trying it using servlets and using tomcat5.0 as a servlet container. Here i'm sening a code used to upload a file. Let me know whether it works. Only few lines are here.
    import java.io.*;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import java.lang.Object;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.lang.String;
    import com.oreilly.servlet.MultipartRequest;
    public class FileUpload extends HttpServlet{
         public void doPost(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)throws
         ServletException, IOException{
         MultipartRequest multi=new MultipartRequest(req);
         String file="file1";
         byte[] b=file.getBytes();
         InputStream in=null;
         BufferedInputStream bis=null;
         FileWriter fw=null;
    try{
         in=multi.getInputStream("file1");
    bis=new BufferedInputStream(in);
         File output=new File("/fileuploadtest");
         fw=new FileWriter(output);
              int i;
              i=bis.read();
              while (i != -1) {
    fw.write(i);
    i = bis.read();
         catch(IOException e){
              System.out.println("Exception=" +e);
    finally{
         try{
              if(in!=null)
              in.close();
              if(bis!=null)
              bis.close();
              if(fw!=null)
              fw.close();
         catch(Exception e){
              System.out.println(e);
    This code is giving error as: cannot resolve symbol: class MultipartRequest
    Why is this happening?
    Pls let me know whether this code works or no and also i have written form.html.
    Can u pls tel me whether there are ways in which i can write a code to upload a file using servlets without using third party packages. Pls help.
    Also how should be the servlet mapping for this code.?
    Regards

  • What is wrong with the following Java servlet code that downloads files?

    Hi,
    I need urgent help.
    This is the issue. I have a JSP code that calls a Java servlet class. This class is used to download files from the JSP page. The following is the piece of code that does the file download.
    String pathOfFile = gsPath + "/" + gsFileName.substring(gsFileName.indexOf("~")+1);
    File F = new File(pathOfFile);
    res.setContentType("application/stream");
    res.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" +gsFileName.trim());
    This code works just fine with IE. However, when this is used with Netscape, the class name gets added to the original file name extension. For example, if the class name is 'FileRetriever' and the file being downloaded is originally named 'a.doc', the file gets a name of 'a.doc.FileRetriever' after download using Netscape or Mozilla.
    One way to solve this is by adding the appropriate file type in the MIME settings in browser preference. However, this not a permanent solution.
    Can somebody let me know the correct code to fix this issue?
    Thanks for your time.

    We loose control of the file name once we pass the original file name to the input stream. When our code instructs Netscape to write the file on the local disk using an output stream, that is when Netscape/Mozilla adds this additional extension to the original file. So, essentially, we do not know about this additional extension.
    Any ideas on how to resolve this?
    Thanks.
