Working with Excel & CSV Files

Hello Everyone,
I am a newbie (well not even that really)! I am thinking of changing from PC to Mac. I have a question about Numbers - for if I can manage it, I don't want to have to buy Microsoft Office for Mac.
I'm sure these questions are really simple and will make me look stupid, but I have to ask....Firstly, if I only have iWork installed can I still download Excel files onto the computer (to save and then open in Numbers)? Also can I save Numbers files as CSV files (I need to do this to upload data)?
Those are the two main questions and I would like to thank any responses in advance.

First off, being a recent switcher, I'd definitely recommend the switch! Like you, I only bought iWork, and haven't had the need to purchase Office 2008, not that I would need (or like) to.
I'll just quickly answer your questions, and then elaborate further below.
-Yes, you can easily open Office 2003 and earlier Excel documents, as well as Office 2007 Excel documents.
-Yes, you can also export your Numbers file as a CSV file.
Now, further elaboration. While Numbers can easily open Office 2007, 2003 and earlier Excel files (.xls and .xlsx), as well as many other filetypes, it cannot simply save them as Excel can. For instance, you cannot open an Excel document, edit, and save it - you must save it as a Numbers (.numbers) file, and if you wish to share the document, there is an 'Export' option under the Share menu in the toolbar, through which you can export it as an Excel, PDF or CSV file. It's also worth noting that you can't export as Office 2007 documents as well, not that you should need to.

    Hi gurus. I got a question for you. According to your experience what's the best approach to work with Excel or csv files that have to be uploaded through DataServices to you datawarehouse.
    Let's say your end-user, who is not a programmer, creates a group of 4 excel files with different calculations in a monthly basis, so they can generate a set of reports from their datawarehouse once the files have been uploaded to tables in your DWH. The calculations vary from month to month. The user doesn't have a front-end to upload the excel files directly to Data Services. The end user needs to keep a track of which person uploaded the files for a determined month.
    1. The end user should place their 4 excel files in a shared directory that will be seen by DataServices.
    2. DataServices will execute certain scheduled job that will read the four files and upload them to the Datawarehouse at a determined time, lets say at 9:00pm.
    It makes me wonder... what happens if the user needs to present their reports immediately so they can´t wait until 9:00pm.  Is it possible for the end user to execute some kind of action (out of the DataServices Environment) so DataServices "could know" that it has to process those files right now, instead of waiting for the night schedule?
    Is there a way that DS will track who was the person who uploaded those files?
    Would it be better to build a front-end for the end user so they can upload their four files directlyto the datawarehouse?

    Hi,
    There are functions in DS that captures the input files automatically. You could use file_exists() or wait_for_file() option to do that. Schedule the job to run every certain minute and if the file exists then run. This could be done by using a certain file name with date and timestamp etc or after running move the old files to archive and DS wait for new files to show up.

  • Advice needed: The way to solve out of memory problem (or the way to work with big csv files)

    Hello:)
    I'm in trouble: I have a big csv file (over 5gb of web-analytics data) and my 64 bit excel (and 6gb ram)
    I cant load file to data model because of it's size. There is an error "out of memory" in power query. 
    This is the first time when I encountered such a problem.
    What options do I have to work with such a file? To increase memory in my computer? Would it solve the problem? How much do I need to work with 6gb csv? 
    Or may be I can upload my data somewhere to azure and work with it there? 
    So the problem - is there any way to deal with big files using power query? Or I need to become a developer and learn sql or other languages?

  • Working with Excel files

    I recieve a lot of excel files through email that i need to sign/manipulate and forward on to others. i have no problems opening them but i cant manipulate the document at all. i have looked at documents to go but it seems that i have to load a particular document on my laptop and then load it onto my iPad to be able to manipulate the documnet. Does anyone know how i can take an attached excel file from an email open it on my iPad manipulate it a little and then reattach it to an email and send it on?
    I sure would love so help. If I can do this then I can leave my laptop at home.

    You should consider [Numbers|http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/numbers.html] for your iPad. Likewise, Pages for iPad will work with a word file.

    Excel .xml file is run through Linux Fedora 10 wKDE and cli.sh to create .csv file for Dreamweaver.  The .xml file was updated and the new .csv file was inserted back into the root folder for DW.  Was working properly before changes, but now it shows error message "call." 
    Been working on this problem for days!!!!  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    What is the problem? The pricing matrix at the URL you provided is working. If it's something not working on your local system, nobody can help unless they see the code you're working with. In any case, it sounds as though there's something wrong with the CSV file, not with Dreamweaver.

    Here are the basic steps needed to read data from excel spreadsheet using the Java Excel API(jExcel API).
    jExcel API can read a spreadsheet from a file stored on the local file system or from some input stream, ideally the following should be the steps while reading:
    Create a workbook from a file on the local file system, as illustrated in the following code fragment:
              import java.io.File;
              import java.util.Date;
              import jxl.*;
             Workbook workbook = Workbook.getWorkbook(new File("test.xls"));
    On getting access to the worksheet, once can use the following code piece to access  individual sheets. These are zero indexed - the first sheet being 0, the  second sheet being 1, and so on. (You can also use the API to retrieve a sheet by name).
              Sheet sheet = workbook.getSheet(0);
    After getting the sheet, you can retrieve the cell's contents as a string by using the convenience method getContents(). In the example code below, A1 is a text cell, B2 is numerical value and C2 is a date. The contents of these cells may be accessed as follows
    Cell a1 = sheet.getCell(0,0);
    Cell b2 = sheet.getCell(1,1);
    Cell c2 = sheet.getCell(2,1);
    String a1 = a1.getContents();
    String b2 = b2.getContents();

For completeness the label is also cast to it's correct type. The code snippet also illustrates how to verify that cell is of the expected type - this can be useful when performing validations on the spreadsheet for presence of correct datatypes in the spreadsheet.

    The API class files are availble in the 'jxl.jar', which is available for download.

  • Working with converted .mov files in Premiere Elements 2

    I recently got a digital camera that records .mov clips with H.264 technology. I use it for back up when Im having problems with my regular camcorder. Of course I can work with these .mov files in QuickTime Pro with no problem. But in order to work with them in Premiere Elements 2, it appears I have to export it into the .avi format first. After exporting in QuickTime Pro, when I bring the new .avi file up into Premiere Elements, the color quality is retained, but much of the resolution is lost. Its very pixelated. I understand that .avi and .mov work differently in the way information is stored avi in chunks and mov in streams, but Im wondering if there is a way I can work around this. The reason why I got QuickTime Pro initially was to be able to convert my finished .avi videos made in Premiere Elements 2 into MPEG-4 files using the H.264 codec for better quality. And Im doing that all the time now with no problem. So I am wondering if when I reconvert the .mov clip thats been converted into .avi back into mpeg-4, will the resolution be restored? That is part of my question. The other part is regarding the initial conversion process. Are there settings in QuickTime Pro for converting .mov to .avi with as little loss in resolution as possible? The manual doesnt address this issue specifically. Any ideas or suggestions? OS is Windows XP Media Center edition, computer Sony Vaio dual processor. Thanks, Judy

    Hi again Steve. I'm so embarrassed. After my initial reply to your message I went to the Adobe site to see if they even made Premiere for Mac and learned they don't. I also read a review in Wired that says Premiere 6 is just as good if not better than iMovie which they say has actually been downgraded. I'm using Premiere 2, so I thought I might consider upgrading. Then I watched "Steve's Story" and realized it was you. (Your daughter is a cutie! Adobe must love you.) So my question is this: Would my problem be solved by simply upgrading to Premiere 4? If I do that, would it be compatible with regard to catalog integration with Photoshop Elements 4 or would I have to upgrade to Elements 6? If I upgraded the whole package would my current Photoshop Elements 4 catalog transfer with all tags intact? This is vital for me to know because I rely on them heavily. I realize that I would be skipping a version in the upgrade. Is that possible? Does that matter? Please read my reply to Bill because it explains why I want to use those particular .mov files. Another question for you. I use your excellent book a lot. If I upgrade will it become useless? Finally, since you're the expert, let me tell you what I'm really aiming for and get your advice. I need to start composing my own musical soundtracks to my videos. I want to do it as I'm viewing the timeline. Therefore, I know I need to invest in a midi-capable keyboard or controller and software. The problem is that there are few controllers compatible with Windows XP Media Center Edition. I am told I would need to disable the XP Media Center registry keys for anything to work which wouldn't matter because I don't use Media Center features anyway (like TV hookup, media player, etc.). But messing with the registry sounds a little complex and dangerous to me. There's got to be an easier way. Do you have any advice or recommendations? Can you point me to any helpful resources? Now you see why I want a Mac? Everyone says all this kind of stuff would be so much easier with a Mac. Problem is I have a limited budget and would like to make the most with what I have.     Clarification: this is a user forum; you are not addressing Adobe here.
    The answer to your question as phrased is: never.
    CS5 is history and it is not longer supported.  There will not be any updates or bug fixes for CS5.
    You need to convert the raw NEF files from your D810 to raw DNGs using the free, standalone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 RC (beta), the first version ever to support that camera..

As I understand I should convert variant to object refnum and then use this refnum with property and invoke nodes to get data from spreadsheet. How to select data type for VariantToData to work with Excel spreadseet?

    Isn't it the same that using Index Array function? I believe that problem is in conversion of variant to refnum. For example, if I change refnum data type to string in Variant To Data, no error appears, and I've got some text data (see the attachment).

  • Essbase Add-In v6.2 not working with Excel 97

    I am running client Windows NT 4.0sp6 with Excel 97 and just tried to upgrade the Essbase Excel Add-In to version 6.2.1 from 6.0. The add-in appears to work fine for all Essbase functions except Essbase-Options. When I select Essbase-Options, I immediately get an Excel.exe application error as follows:The instruction at "0x01e412b5" referenced memory at "0x0000003c". The memory could not be read.My upgraded v6.2.1 Application manager appears to run fine. Anybody got any ideas?? According to Hyperion documentation, v6.2.1 works with Excel 97.
