Worldpay in APEX - issues and experiences

Hi, I am looking into the feasibility of integrating worldpay payment processing to a future APEX app. I was wondering if this is entirely possible and generally trouble free? I would be interested in hearing about anyone who has experience doing this, with possible issues to be aware of. Thanks for any input.

Hi,
This is great feedback, the flexible parameter passing worked a treat, although im running into another issue, which I would be extremely grateful for assistance with.
I am using the procedure below:
PROCEDURE process_wp_payment_response(name_array in owa.vc_arr, value_array in owa.vc_arr)
IS
pieces utl_http.html_pieces;
v_payment_cancel_url varchar2(500) := 'url here';
v_payment_ok_url varchar2(500) := 'url here';
FUNCTION getValForName(p_name in varchar2) RETURN varchar2
IS
BEGIN
FOR x IN 1 .. name_array.count LOOP
IF upper(name_array(x)) = upper(p_name) THEN
RETURN value_array(x);
END IF;
END LOOP;
RETURN null;
END;
BEGIN
IF upper(getValForName('transStatus')) = 'Y' THEN
--generate http request for page & get the data
v_payment_ok_url := v_payment_ok_url || getValForName('M_apex_sess_id');
pieces := utl_http.request_pieces(v_payment_ok_url);
FOR i in 1 .. pieces.count loop
htp.p(pieces(i));
END LOOP;
ELSIF upper(getValForName('transStatus')) = 'C' THEN
v_payment_cancel_url := v_payment_cancel_url || getValForName('M_apex_sess_id');
pieces := utl_http.request_pieces(v_payment_cancel_url);
FOR i in 1 .. pieces.count loop
htp.p(pieces(i));
END LOOP;
END IF;
END;
The idea being that the apex session id is added, and we can the populate some items on the feedback page. This thing is, I am getting a 404 error from the callback, which means that the callback goes to the worldpay default page.
The 404 error only occurs when I use an apex url. When I test it with http://www.google.com for instance, I dont get a 404. If i simply htp.p the url, and copy-paste it into the address line, the page loads fine.
It looks to be something to do with utl_http.request_pieces with apex pages.

  • HP Envy 15 Heating Issues and Screen Damage

    Hello,
    This is going to be quite long since I'm going to explain everything in as much detail as possible.
    I bought my HP Envy 15 (j123tx) in September 2014 and for three months I had absolutely no issue with it (work wise and gaming wise) until one day I booted up the computer and noticed that a big rectangular portion of the screen (on the top - in the rectangular area that aligns with the touchpad when the lid is closed) was discoloured. Specifically it was much darker than the rest of the screen on a black background and yellow on a white background.
    After checking to see if there was anything on the screen's surface, I realized it was a hardware issue and decided to use my warranty (of which I have another 8 months or so remaining). I told the retailers about the issue and they told me it could be because of the pressure applied on the lid (when it is closed) that affects the screen specifically in that area since the touchpad is a bit sunken in to the notebook's body. After expressing my displeasure at how inconvenient that is since I've taken very good care of my notebook and have only transported it in the HP notebook bag, they promised me that they would send it to the HP Service Center in Sri Lanka who would replace the display panel for me (obviously since my notebook is still under warranty).
    After 10 working days, I went over to the retailer's warranty center and collected my notebook with the display panel replaced and the problem gone. I did however notice that the technicians had pasted a note next to the touchpad which read "Check  the temperature of the touchpad. It could be heating up and damaging the screen". I asked the retailer's technicians what this meant and they told me that since the notebook has a magnesium (or magnesium based) body, it tends to heat up. The heat could also be heating up the touchpad (since that too seems to be made of magnesium). As a result whenever I close the lid of my notebook, the rectangular screen area directly above the touchpad could be heating up and thus getting damaged.
    Now this to me seems like a huge product defect. I've been using HP notebooks for more than 8 years and I've never heard of this issue before. I asked the technicians how I could prevent this from occurring again and they told me to use the little cloth that came with the laptop when I bought it that is placed under the lid (between the screen and the keyboard) when the lid is closed.
    While using that little cloth doesn't seem to be quite inconvenient, I'm very afraid that the problem will occur again and I'll have to get it fixed again which involves transferring all my data and losing my notebook for 2 weeks which is highly problematic for me as I require it for work. Should the problem occur again outside the warranty period, I feel I may have wasted a good amount of money on this notebook when I trusted HP over its competitors simply due to my past experiences with its reliability, durability and performance.
    While I realize this is not a current issue - I would really like to know if this issue has been experienced before (my search did not turn up anything related) and if I do have to be worried about it happening again and if so, how I should go about handling it with the retailers (perhaps I should give it back and ask for a refund for selling me a defective product).
    Thank you sincerely.
    PS: I have attached a picture of the problem when it occurred for your reference.

    Thanks for the prompt reply WeiH.
    Sadly there doesn't seem to be an HP Service Center in my country (Sri Lanka). So now I'm really confused as to what my retailer's technicians meant by "we'll send it to the local HP Support Center and have your display panel replaced".
    Whatever they did, the display panel has been replaced and I've been using it for less than a week so far with no issues. The touchpad hasn't really been heating up and has in fact been as warm as the rest of the notebook. Perhaps it's because I have now turned on the option of disabling the touchpad whenever an external cursor device is attached (since I primarily always use a mouse).
    Needless to say, since we both have no clue as to how the touchpad overheated and damaged the screen (in the exact position and measurement as the touchpad) I feel like it's just a matter of time before it happens again.
    Obviously I understand that there's little you can do on your side other than direct me to an HP Support Center. However I hope my worries are justified as I feel that as a consumer I shouldn't have to worry about my brand new product malfunctioning by no fault of my own.

  • Compilation of Lenovo X120e issues and solutions

    Just thought a compilation of issues may be beneficial for folks who own an X120e.
    Screen adjusts brightness automatically without user input depending on content on screen:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X100e-screen-brightness-increasing-by-itself/td...
    This is caused by Vari-Bright being enabled in the Catalyst Control Center.  With this option enabled, the screen will automatically adjust its brightness depending on what is shown on the screen.  The display brightness is increased when the screen is predominantly white while the display brightness is decreased when the screen is predominantly dark.  An easiest way to see this effect happening is to have two tabs opened in a web browser window.  Set one tab to display a website that is mainly filled with white pixels (such as this Lenovo Forum) and another tab to display a website that is mainly filled with dark pixels (such as http://www.krijtenberg.nl/ ).  Switch between the two, pausing a few seconds in each tab.
    Solution:
    Open the Catalyst Control Center and select the PowerPlay option in the Power section.  Uncheck the Vari-Bright option (or adjust the slider) and click Apply.  Verify that the automatic adjustment is no longer occuring by doing the two tab experiment described above.
    Function keys for brightness control not working after waking from sleep / hibernation in some instances:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-Funtion-keys-for-brightness-not-working/t...
    For my X120e, whenever I have it sleeping or hibernating and change the power source (such as initiating sleep when on power and then waking it up while on battery, or vice versa), the function keys for brightness controls do not work.
    Solution:
    Restarting the machine will bring back functionality of the brightness control keys...
    A way to prevent this from happening in the first place is to wake the X120e in the same power state that the X120e was put to sleep in (wake up from power adapter if slept while connected to power adapter, or wake up from battery if slept while on battery).
    All we can do now is wait for Lenovo to come up with a fix on their side of things.
    AMD SATA Controller and TRIM for SSD:
    The AMD SATA Controller provided by Lenovo does not support passing of TRIM command according to http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/450343-post35.html for SSDs.  The Lenovo provided AMD SATA Controller is 1.2.1.197, before the official TRIM support in 1.2.1.263.  If you're using a HDD, this is of no concern.
    Solution:
    In order to have support for passing of TRIM command, one has to update the AMD SATA Controller to any version above 1.2.1.263 ( http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/integrated_win7-64.aspx#3 for Windows 7 64-bit, for example) or uninstall the AMD SATA Controller to revert back to Microsoft's Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller.
    Disclaimer:  Since the AMD SATA Controller driver linked is not from Lenovo themselves, I'm sure they won't provide any support if something is to occur so try at your own risk.
    As HP79 mentions below, at least according to the update notes, TRIM implementation is implemented for Hudson chipsets as of 1.2.001.263.
    Audio Stutter / Slurring occuring during playback of video/audio:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-Stuttering-Audio/td-p/389023
    This issue can be reproduced (at least on my X120e) by waking the X120e after putting it to sleep.  The symptom is the audio repeating a sound over a span of a second or two during playback and is quite noticable.
    Solution:
    uEFI Bios version 1.11 seems to deal with the audio stuttering issue.  So far, results lead to positive outcomes.
    Old Solution:
    PWMTR64V.DLL that is loaded at Startup seems to be causing this issue.  Disabling it from launching when starting up seems to cure the Audio Stutter (even after waking up from sleep which was seen to be a pretty reliable way to get the issue to repro).  Start Menu > Launch MSCONFIG from the Search Bar > Select Startup Tab from the System Configuration window > Uncheck Thinkpad Power Manager > Restart.
    This does not seem to turn off the power manager application itself so settings in Power Manager can be saved and it seems to still be in effect.  However, opening up Power Manager from the notification / taskbar can cause audio stuttering and mouse movement slowdown while it is launching and/or when applying settings.  This is only temporary and is gone when Power Manager is closed. (Thanks kns7977 for the find)
    Pending to see if those who uninstalled Power Manager are able to turn off the offending startup .dll.
    Mouse seems to stutter or stay in place for a moment when moving:
    This seems to be caused by the same issue causing the Audio Stutter / Slurring.  At least at this time, the cause of the issue and solution seems to be the same.
    Emulating Middle Mouse Button with Trackpoint:
    One can set up the middle button between the left and right click button for the TrackPoint to act like pressing a middle mouse button on a standard mouse by changing the scrolling type to Smooth instead of the default Standard.
    Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Mouse > UltraNav Tab > Setting for TrackPoint > Setting for Choose Scrolling or Magnifying Glass Function > Smooth.
    Trackpad's two finger gesture being hit or miss:
    The trackpad's two finger scrolling is very hit and miss.
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X120e-Touchpad-issues/td-p/393751
    Solution: Turning off Gesture Filtering may alleviate the problem.  As mentioned in http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/561751-x120e-owners-thread-24.html#post7323293, it seems that the Gesture Filtering is counteracting any sort of two finger input.
    Get to Mouse Properties by Fn + F8, select Manage Settings.  At Mouse Properties, select the UltraNav tab > Settings for TouchPad.  Expand the Smart Check Settings, highlight Gesture Filtering, and uncheck the Enable Gesture Filtering box and Apply.
    Screen flickers lines:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-Flickering/td-p/389523
    Had this issue occur on me once, but never seen it happen again.  Unsure what caused or cured it.
    Solution:
    If the flickering is occuring, a restart is all that is needed to alleviate the problem.  Haven't tested if hibernation fixes it, but neither sleep nor turning off the screen with the Power Manager dealt with the flickering.
    3-Cell Battery mentioned as a 40Wh in the Order Page of Lenovo X120e when it is actually rated as 32Wh according to Power Manager:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X120e-3-cell-40Wh-battery-reported-as-32Wh-by-P...
    Yeah...
    Solution:
    Accept that it's a 32Wh you will get when selecting 3-Cell or go for the 6-Cell if you want more than 32Wh.
    2x2 ABGN Driver from Lenovo triggering Error Code 10:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X120e-ABGN-Driver-issue-in-Windows-7-Pro-x64/td...
    The Wireless driver from Lenovo's site seems to not work with the 2x2 ABGN wireless when installed on a fresh copy of Windows 7 x64.
    Solution:
    Not really quite a solution, but one can bypass this by either installing the 32-bit Windows 7 and installing the 32-bit driver, or using the factory recovery disc to install 64 bit windows 7 to have it install drivers that work for x64 windows 7.
     X120e bluescreens after installing LAN Realtek 7.26.902.2010 drivers from Lenovo's Driver download site.
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-bluescreen-when-installing-lan-drivers/td...
    The drivers doesn't seem to work and it causes a bluescreen on fresh installed Windows 7 x64.
    Solution:
    As Clicq suggests, Realtek's own drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTy... seems to deal with the issue.
    Screen quality on the X120e:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-poor-LCD-quality-viewing-angles/td-p/3945...
    The quality of the screen on an X120e is below expectations.
    This is common with low-quality TN panels not helped by glossy displays.  My personal X120e screen likes to bleed certain colors of red.
    Solution (not really):
    One can use the Windows 7 built-in color calibration tool to adjust the colors to make it more tolerable.  Adjusting your own viewing angle in relation to the screen might deal with some color issues (hard to figure out what's the correct viewing angle because of TN panel's small range of optimal viewing angles).  Also, changing the refresh rate to 60Hz may deal with some headaches due to the screen (as it did for me).
    HDMI Overscan to HDTV issue:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/HDMI-overscan-to-HDTV-issue-on-x120e/m-p/395335
    There is a black border when outputting to HDTV through HDMI.
    Solution:
    AMD's CCC by default sets a specific value for overscan / underscan.  One can http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Output-to-TV-via-HDMI-port-black-border-on-the-... while the device is connected via HDMI (the option is hidden if the HDMI port is not used) and adjust the slider to an acceptable value.
    Skype asserts after 10-20 seconds of video chat:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-Skype-quits-after-10-20-seconds-of-video/...
    When doing a video chat, the video feed will freeze and then skype will crash to desktop.
    Solution:
    Version 5.3 of Skype seems to be the culprit.  Until Skype itself is fixed, one can use Skype 5.2.60.113 from http://www.filehippo.com/download_skype/changelog/9465/ to bypass this issue.  Just reject any offer to update to 5.3 after installing 5.2, for now.
    If there is anything I missed, please respond and I'll update this post with new information.  These are the ones that I have encountered so far with my Lenovo X120e.  Don't get me wrong, I like my X120e... it's just been a "learning" experience lol

  • APEX Listener and EPG - strange behaviour

    Hi
    For some years, I've used EPG for APEX but have struggled with performance particularly as I can have up to 150 student developers using at any one time.
    I do a fair amount of work using ORDImage and have successfully developed APEX applications to upload image files and display full-size and thumbnail images.
    After upgrading to APEX 4.1 (from 4.0), I decided to install APEX Listener standalone.
    Before I did so I checked that my applications still worked in 4.1 and they did.
    However, just installing APEX Listener but not configuring it (yet) has meant that my image display in a report using a procedure based on wpg_docload.download_file( l_ordimage_image.source.localData ) no longer works in EPG - the images are not displayed.
    Configuring APEX Listener and running the same application through that DOES display the images.
    So this part of the application works under APEX Listener but not under EPG.
    My application also allows users to upload images from APEX_APPLICATION_FILES using standard code. Under APEX Listener after uploading, I'm left with a blank page with a wwv_flow.accept URL although the image does indeed upload. Under EPG it works as expected and I get a success confirmation.
    So this part of the application works under EPG but not under APEX Listener.
    Has anyone else come across different behaviour depending on the mode of connection?
    Thanks
    Brian
    [Oracle EE 11gR2, Windows Server 2008R2, APEX 4.1, APEX Listener 1.1.3]

    Hi Brian,
    it sounds like you have both EPG and APEX Listener running on the same machine, so your problem might result from a port conflict. Note that both services use TCP port 8080 as default.
    At least a port conflict would explain the strange behaviour in your case, some things working on one web server and some on the other.
    Some parts of your initial post hint to that direction, e.g.
    However, just installing APEX Listener but not configuring it (yet) has meant that my image display in a report using a procedure based on >wpg_docload.download_file( l_ordimage_image.source.localData ) no longer works in EPG - the images are not displayed.... because the APEX Listener only interfere with the EPG if it is at least running on the same machine as your database and furthermore, if it is unconfigured in terms of ist database connection, a port conflict might be the only way it could cause anything like that.
    However, if you are sure that's not the issue, please check if you see any error in the APEX Listener's log for the following action you performed:
    My application also allows users to upload images from APEX_APPLICATION_FILES using standard code. Under APEX Listener after uploading, I'm left with a blank >page with a wwv_flow.accept URL although the image does indeed uploadIf you actually see just a blank screen, something very bad must have happened and you should see some kind of stack trace there.
    For further investigations, if necessary, it would be helpful to know how you deployed or started your APEX Listener and which JDK version you use.
    For the moment, I still think the port conflict is my best guess.
    You could avoid it by either changing the port for EPG (I'd not recommend that if you have other users still using it) or by changing the port for your APEX Listener.

  • T500 Problems and experiences with Lenovo's technical support / EZServ

    After some issues and numerous calls to Lenovo's Technical Support, I just thought I would share my experiences here.
    First off, I currently own a ThinkPad T500, which was designed to be a replacement for my older ASUS laptop.
    While the ASUS laptop is still running okay, I have had a hard time trying to get the company to properly warranty the laptop. (they would make falsified claims that nothing is wrong with the laptop, so that they would not have to replace any parts - and when they do replace parts, they would simply create another problem and totally ignore the described problem.) The experiences were so stressful and disgusting such that I am sick of arguing with the company any further. My decision on the ThinkPad was based on that IBM/Lenovo is designed to serve business class customers and theoretically should have "business-class support". For this very reason, I have added the best warranty service they was offered to me at the time (3yr onsite + accidental). I am just guessing at that time I just wanted to get away from small companies and go to a company that would back their customers' laptops.
    As soon as I got my hands on a T500, however, I have noticed that something is wrong with the card reader. Apparently the reader on the machine would not read SDHC cards (it does read SD cards, however.) This is a problem because I only use SDHC cards and the machine was not able to read any of them. As the card reader controller is manufactured by the same manufacturer (Ricoh) and my older ASUS laptop was able to read SDHC cards, I thought something odd was going on with my machine. This was also based on the evidence that other T500 owners were able to read SDHC just fine.
    In addition to the card reader, I was also having troubles in which the machine would freeze whenever Nero Burning ROM (a CD/DVD authoring software) is used.
    My first support call to Lenovo was not that pleasant, given that I was placed on hold for 20 minutes when the rep was looking up specs for SHDC compatibility. The rep also said that they would not troubleshoot 3rd party software and would not help me on the issue. I was also told that I should also call back during "regular business hours (apparently until 5pm EST, or 2pm PST (my time)" (despite that the technical support hotline is open 24/7) so that a supervisor can handle my case. This makes it very difficult for me to get to someone with any authority as I am usually busy throughout the day until late afternoons (~4pm PST -> 7pm EST).
    Nevertheless, my second call to Lenovo was much more pleasant. The rep handled my case in a timely fashion and promptly provided replacement parts indicated by my problem. (Onsite motherboard replacement for the card reader, and a separate shipment for the DVD-RW drive). Turns out that the motherboard replacement did fix the SDHC issue, although the freezing problem was not caused by hardware failures, but rather a faulty driver that was corrected after Lenovo released an update months later on the Intel SATA controller drivers.
    Five months later, after having to use a broadband WWAN card for my work, I also started to notice there is something wrong with the broadband WWAN card. The card used is the Ericsson F3507g card (or the AT&T broadband WWAN option). Not only would the connection be very flaky, it would also drop connections fairly frequently. It seems that a SIM card pull to another card would result in a perfect connection and ever since I have been using an addon card instead to use the Internet. When I confronted Lemovo with the problem, the experience was worse than the first one. I have made at least six service calls to Lenovo and everytime the reps will waste my time with basic troubleshooting which I told them repeatedly that I have already done (I have even reinstalled the OS but it seems that it does not matter to the reps). Here are some things that are repeated over and over:
    1) Can you uninstall the Power Manager Driver and the Wireless WAN drivers and reinstall them?
    2) Can you go on to our website and download the WWAN drivers (document ID: MIGR-70000 - I even remembered this number since it was repeated so many times) - and the Power Manager Driver and reinstall it?
    3) Can you go to Device Manager (the rep would go step by step to it even though I told him I already know how to get there), and see if there are any "bangs" (exclamation marks) on any of the devices?
    4) Since you were able to connect to the AT&T network, then from the hardware standpoint there is nothing wrong with your card. This indicates there is a software configuration or a driver problem. (I have been trying to acquire the latest drivers but what I have was already the latest)
    5) Since your card could connect to the network, you should contact your provider for help. (AT&T blames it on the card)
    6) I'm sorry but there is nothing I can do to help you. You should contact your provider about the card (despite that I acquired the card from Lenovo and not from them)
    7) Are you sure that your card is activated properly? It doesn't show in our systems that the card has been activated properly. You will need to call both AT&T and the Lenovo activation hotline (whatever this is) to have your card work properly. (I have never heard of this before)
    Despite telling these reps I have an addon card that works perfectly and that I have done all the basic troubleshooting already, none of them are really willing to give me a replacement card. They would either request that I send my computer back to the depot (which I do not want to do since I use this laptop everyday and that's why I have onsite warranty), fail to help me, or transfer me to someone else that makes me do all the troubleshooting all over again. (Every call I made to Lenovo can be said to be composed of at least 20 minutes of basic troubleshootings with the end result of not being able to help)
    After having the case escalated to a team leader, I was told that someone would give me a call within a few hours since their team leader is with another customer. Result? No callbacks. Not within a day, nor two.
    Called Lenovo again, they apologized, but samething happened - supervisor on the line - promised another callback by a supervisor - but nothing, nada!
    Called Lenovo a third time - was again told the same thing, but I am not falling for that anymore - the rep finally agreed to give me a replacement, as well as as to send out a technician that would fix the LCD cover that is starting to get loose on one side.
    At that time, I was so frustrated and this reminds me of the pain I have went through with my old ASUS laptop and their grumpy customer service. It just seems to me that it has to be that difficult to have anything resolved or fixed. (What is especially frustrating is that the basic reps do not have any authority to make any decisions, 90% of the time I will need to be transferred to a supervisor of some sort before my case can be handled successfully - which is hard at times given that I only have until 2pm PST to call them)
    Received replacement, but did not fix issue. I have noticed that the GPS (which was part of the WWAN card) also has problems getting adequate signals for a 3D Fix. I have once again called Lenovo, this time raising the concerns with the GPS and seeking for help. Along with the basic troubleshooting, here is what Lenovo has to say about the GPS issue which frustrates me even more:
    1) uh, G..P..S? what GPS? (most reps I call say this, shows me that they either don't know what a GPS is or know that there is a dedicated GPS builtin on the Ericsson module. Perhaps they don't even know that ThinkVantage GPS existed)
    2) You will need to have active service in order to use GPS (I do have active service, but nevertheless that statement is false since a 3D fix can be successfully acquired with a dummy card - I guess the rep has no idea what he/she was talking about)
    3) That's a software issue - you need to call AT&T and tell them about the problem (Again, I guess the rep has no idea that the GPS is not linked to AT&T's networks - there is a dedicated GPS on the card that allows the ThinkVantage GPS tool to acquire proper GPS signals) (Also, why would AT&T troubleshoot a tool that Lenovo made called ThinkVantage GPS? - I don't get it)
    4) You need to uninstall, and then reinstall the Power Manager driver and also the latest WWAN drivers. (I did that, did not work - I have told them I even reinstalled the OS from scratch)
    5) You need to go uninstall, and then reinstall the Wireless LAN drivers (although I am talking about wireless WAN, not LAN)
    6) There are two wireless adapters in your laptop? Are you sure about this?
    7) LAN, or WAN? What are you referring to? (I guess some reps are not aware what WWAN means)
    After dealing with the numerous reps that have no idea what I was talking about, I have decided that I would just take the machine into depot, which would give me a chance to explain the other issues I have with the machine as well.
    Here are some of the issues I am having with my T500 right now (please comment if you have the same issues or perhaps have a possible solution/workaround for it)
    1. The left side of the LCD cover has a pressure point, which causes the cover to dislodge from the rest of the panel slightly when pressure is applied from the back side of the cover. (Could be caused by closing the lid, for example) - IBM technician applied some adhesive to the inside, which helped it from dislodging, although the left side is still a little filmsy compared to the right.
    2. This error randomly pops up at infrequent intervals: "Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
    The latest GFX driver is installed and all updates have been installed. OS has been reinstalled but problems still occurs infrequently.
    3. This error also pops up at infrequent intervals: "Active protection is not functioning as system detected the abnormal sensor status. To diagnose the sensor device, run PC DOCTOR DOS - HDD Active Protection Test and if it still shows, contact Help and Service for repair." The only problem is, my laptop only came installed with PC Doctor 5 for Windows and when I run it"
    I ran a sensor check in DOS using the diagnostic CD and the sensor checked out okay. This error seems to happen mostly after I changed a setting in the Active Protection System software. (ex. changing the suspend time, etc)
    4. By default, the internal microphone does not work. In order for the internal microphone to work, the Advanced multi-stream mode must be enabled in the SmartAudio control panel. If both redirection options are enabled, the internal microphones and the speakers would then work normally. However, the hotkey controls on the ThinkPad would not control the right device when headphones are plugged in (since headphones are classified as its own device when the Advanced stream mode is enabled) - Mute and volume controls thus only controls the internal speakers' volume, and have no control whatsoever when headphones are plugged in.
    5. The brightness on the T500 is rather dim. I am not sure if that's how the monitor is, but I can hardly see anything unless the display brightness is close to the max setting. I have the 1680x1050 matte screen.
    6. The WWAN card does not make a stable connection to the network and ThinkVantage GPS does not acquire a 3D Fix even when under direct sky for >20 minutes. What is interesting though is that if I turn off the monitor screen (Fn+F3) or close to lid, the WWAN connection will be very stable and GPS will function normally (acquire fix usually within 2-3 minutes). If the monitor/screen is turned back on after a GPS Fix is acquied, the signals will quickly deteriorate and the updates will either become delayed/inaccurate or a fix will be lost. The brighter the screen, the harder it is to get a fix or a stable connection. (At the max setting it is almost impossible to get a fix while at the lowest brightness a very weak fix can be acquired - this is the case even many sattelites have been detected) Perhaps something with power consumption? Or the LCD drawing too much power?
    7. Although it does not happen very frequently, pressing Fn+F3 to turn off the display might cause the LCD to flicker on and off non-stop.
    8. This used to happen more with the older version of the Lenovo Fingerprint Software - but sometimes the software tends to get stuck at the welcome screen after returning from sleep/suspend/standby mode. The screen will remain at Please Wait forever and a hard restart will be required to get back into Windows.
    9. At frequent intervals the sound from the internal speakers would stop working and only the headphones would work. The sound might, however, come back if I leave the headphones plugged in long enough and unplug them. Restarting the Windows Audio service will temporarily restore audio but the same issue tends to happen again soon after that. Driver issue? (I am not sure if it's relevant, but I tend to put my computer to sleep instead of shutting it down)
    I have explained all of these issues on a piece of paper that I have included in my shipment to Flextronics. I have also included in big letters to make sure that they do not send the laptop to the address where they originally sent the "box" to. This is because I am only at that address a few days during the year and I don't plan to be there most days during the year.
    On the first day, it seemed that the status changed from "Machine being repaired" to "Hold for customer information".
    Apparently I missed a call from a number with an area code of 901 (which is Memphis, TN - I assume this is Lenovo's support center, since this is where the package was sent to). No messages were left on the voicemail. Called the number back, but was however told that I dialed the wrong number and no one has ever called me on this number (the lady on the phone was quite rude too) I then called the 800 EZServ number instead, turns out that they wanted one of my passwords which I gave them.
    The evening after I saw that the machine was successfully repaired and that it is being shipped back to me. However, no tracking number was provided. (There still isn't a tracking number on the EZServ status page)
    Hoping that my machine was repaired in good condition, I took a day off so I would be able to wait for UPS to deliver my laptop.
    Such that I have something to work with, I called the EZServ # and see if they had a tracking number for my shipment. At the same time, I asked what components were replaced and/or what components were installed to the system. To my surprise, they reimaged the whole system and I was not even informed about this at all! (I do understand I checked the Yes box in the problem description page, but I felt that it was important that the repair center let their customers know before their data will be destroyed - luckily I imaged my laptop right before I shipped it out so I have a copy of my data) In addition, it also seemed that they did not read any of the pages I enclosed in the shipment since nothing about the WWAN card was ever mentioned, despite special emphasis placed on this when I called Lenovo to have my computer sent back. It seemed that the rep only recorded one of the problems I listed above, which was unsatisfactory.
    The repair process was disappointing, as I have included in my problem description that I have previously tried reinstalling the whole OS from scratch and the problems did not go away. Reimaging the system will also probably have no effect on the problems I have described in the problem description.
    What is more surprising to me though was that they totally skipped the notation I put on to have the notebook shipped to an alternate address relative to the box address. To make this impossible to miss, I miss drew a big * and circled it many times so that anyone would see it if they were reading the sheet. I found out shortly after checking on the UPS website that the city the package was being shipped to was that of the wrong address, and not the city of that of the alternate address. I was horrified after knowing that the package would not arrive today but yet I still took a day off work. (How disappointing?!)
    Again and again, I called EZServ to see if I can have the package intercepted so it can be delivered to the right address. An intercept was placed on the package, although I received a call 30 minutes later from UPS saying that the intercept failed since the package has already been delivered. UPS also told me there is no way the people living there can simply return it and continue on with the intercept. Not happy with what I am hearing, I called EZServ and see if they can set up a pickup request to have the package delivered to my address. The first rep hanged up on me shortly she answered. The second rep called UPS, placed me on hold for more than 20 minutes, then hanged up on me. The third rep called UPS, and told me that they have esculated the case and that "UPS will handle everything", whatever that means. (she refused to disclose any more details). She told me that I would be receiving a call from her shortly on the details on the upcomings and promised that I would be receiving my laptop back. As with Lenovo, I didn't receive any callbacks. I called EZServ once more, and all they would say is tell me to wait. Sick and tired of waiting and calling and not getting anywhere, I drove 100 miles to where they shipped my laptop and picked it up there. I just don't know whether to trust the EZServ people anymore....
    As far as the laptop goes, I didn't have time to open the box or to test it yet. But I will let you all know once I have taken a look at the results.
    While the past experiences have been painful, I haven't lost all hope in Lenovo yet - although I really think that the customer service can really improve on certain levels.
    Please give me advices on what to do next!
    Thanks for reading this!

  • Apex Collections and dates

    Apex Collections and Dates
    I made an earlier posting today on the forum titled “‘ORA-01861: literal does not match format string’ error after my hosting company upgraded to Apex 3.2.” The issue relates to Apex collections and dates. Prior to the hosting company upgrading Apex 3.2 from 3.1 all was working OK. It seemed a reasonable assumption that the issue relates to the upgrade to 3.2. Having tested the code against another Apex 3.2 installation I am satisfied that the issue is not with Apex 3.2. That said, I am still getting the issue on the hosting site.
    To demonstrate the issue to my hosting company and this forum, I put together a simple one page application that demonstrates the issue using the least amount of code.
    I created a page with an ‘On Load – Before header” process that sets up an Apex Collection with a single value of ’20-FEB-2009’ in the c001 element as follows:
    if apex_collection.collection_exists(p_collection_name=>'THEISSUE') then
    apex_collection.delete_collection(p_collection_name=>'THEISSUE');
    end if;
    apex_collection.create_collection(p_collection_name => 'THEISSUE');
    APEX_COLLECTION.ADD_MEMBER(
    p_collection_name => 'THEISSUE',
    p_c001 => '20-FEB-2009');
    I added an SQL REPORT region to the page which uses the Apex Collection as follows:
    select to_date(c001,'DD-MON-YYYY') testdate
    from apex_collections
    where collection_name='THEISSUE'
    and to_date('20-FEB-2009','DD-MON-YYYY')
    = to_date(c001,'DD-MON-YYYY')
    When the page is run I get the ‘ORA-01861: literal does not match format string’ error.
    If I remove the following from the SQL Report Region:
    and to_date('20-FEB-2009','DD-MON-YYYY')
    = to_date(c001,'DD-MON-YYYY')
    and run the page, the date is displayed OK, i.e., c001 is converted to a date OK. This made me wonder whether it does not like the line to_date('20-FEB-2009','DD-MON-YYYY')? So I changed the where code for the report to :
    and to_date(c001,'DD-MON-YYYY')
    = to_date(c001,'DD-MON-YYYY')
    i.e., convert c001 to a date and compare it to itself. The rationale being that if the c001 converts to a date OK, then comparing c001 converted to a date with itself should not give an error. It did it gave the same error ‘ORA-01861’
    It would seem on my hosting site since the upgrade, that Apex and Oracle have problems with Apex Collection elements being converted to dates as part of the where clause.
    Now my understating of Oracle Apex collections in simple terms is that all Apex collections are held in a single Oracle table managed by a series of Apex functions. Given that all Apex collections are in the same table, could the issue be with the Oracle database when it is creating its execution plan for the query? Could Oracle be including the value of c001 from other collections (i.e., when c001 is not in a date format ) in the initial stages of its execution plan?
    I hope the above make sense and thanks in advance.
    Ian

    Scott,
    I believe I have found the answer the statistics on WWV_FLOW_COLLECTIONS$ and WWV_FLOW_COLLECTION_MEMBERS$. are out of date and Oracle is doing a full table scan instead of using the indices to select only the c001 columns that belong to the given collection_id. If I change my simple example to store the date value in c050 it works ok. (In all probability this will be the only collection on the hosted database to use c050).
    I have asked the hosting company to gather stats on all the apex tables.
    Thanks for your help
    Ian

  • Why is it that Apple have no interest in helping I have a iPhone 4S and since updating to ISO 7.0.4 I have no wifi at all told me it's a hardware issue and I will be charged for the repair sick of it what a scam

    Why is it that Apple have no interest in helping I have a iPhone 4S and since updating to ISO 7.0.4 I have no wifi at all told me it's a hardware issue and I will be charged for the repair as it's just over a yr old so I've got a 24 month contract so 12 months with a phone that is not working right I have read loads of other people that have the same problem so how can they put it down to the phone and when asked where to take it was told to google it not happy at all apple u need to sort it out never again am I buying anything for yourselfs again DISTGUSTED would be an understatement

    No joy at all they just keep saying it's the phone but was fine before update and @metasolaray why should I pay for extra cover when the fault is not the phone but the update they have put out for everyone to install and I am far from being the only person as there is hundreds of people going through the same with this update and it's not been the first time they messed it up

    Apple should take resonsibility for this, otherwise they will lose lots of loyal customers. I have moved away from the ipad due to expense and am now very tempted to do so away from the iphone. Selling a product that prompts an update that breaks the phone is not good.

    Have had the same issues with iPhone 4S since the upgrade.  No wifi button, battery draining every 8 hours with no use, phone shutting on & off for no reason at all.  I gave in and tried the hair dryer method.  Turned the phone off and hel d the dryer over the camera lense area for one minute.  Turned the phone back on and to my shock, had wifi button back again.  That was 2 days ago.  Battery is lasting normal amount of time again and I can use wifi again!  Hopefully this will last.  I know it doesn't work for everyone but it doesn't hurt to try.  Much better than spending the $200 at the Apple store, which by the way, the genius said Apple is aware of the problems but there is nothing they can do.

    Having the same issue: iOS 7.0.2 with no WiFi / poor Battery stamina and really slow software experience when opening several options at Settings icon.
    Apple care agent contacted me and we try all alternatives to isolate and detect if this is regarding a hardware problem. Of course they told me it is. Too sad. My phone is in immaculate condition.
    My mother has an Iphone, my father has an Iphone, my 2 sisters have Iphones, my brother, wife and daugther... we all have Iphones. Mine's the only one with this fault (my personal experience: fail prob is 12,5% -1 out of 8).
    At this point, I'm evaluating to stop buying apple products for fear that in the future the same will happen with some "premium" product that ultimately they are not.
    Too sad, sorry but this is too much.

    I got my 4s in August 2012, as an upgrade on my Vodafone contract Following the installation of IOS 7 I also experienced greying out of wifi and bluetooth. I tried various options suggested on forums however none worked. I took my phone to Vodafone who told me it was a problem they were aware of but couldn't do anything about as Apple had to deal with it. I took it to my nearest Apple store (60 miles round trip!) to be told it was not their responsibility, it was Vodafone's - something to do with consumer law! They also said I would have to pay £160 for a replacement phone as it couldn't be repaired. The 'Genius' was very cagey about it being a common problem by the way!! Back to Vodafone who said it was not their responsibility so back to Apple. This time I spoke with a Manager who told me in not so many words that it was an issue and agreed to halve the replacement cost of £160 to £80. By this time I just wanted it sorted to reluctantly paid £80 for a replacment phone. Seeing as this is CLEARLY a design fault, Apple should have replaced it free of charge. This experience just confirms what I am reading in lots of places about the Apple Company. I was going to buy an iPad but have decided not to now. I shall NOT be replacing the iphone when my contract is up. I too will be writing to BBC Watchdog.

    You will probably be told that the solution is a replacement phone. Ask to speak to a Manager and insist on getting it at a lower price. I did this and got it at 50% of the usual repacement cost. Still not ideal but at least it saves you a bit of the money you shouldn't have to pay in the first place!

    I depend alot on my Iphone and this Wifi greyed out issue is really getting to me!! This caused me to lose some business, but I'm sure I will make up for that in Andriod World. Switching back to andriod should have never switched to apple in the first place.

    4s owner in the same boat as everyone else.
    I setup a service call with apple on Monday this week and was told it's quite a common hardware failure. When I asked why I should be paying for a new phone I was advised to book an appointment in store. Well I've just returned from my appointment with a "genius" who told me that when the update is installing if any component is weak when installing it will be permanently disabled.  Was then told £150 for a new phone which I declined.
    I've had  iPhones for 4 years now but due to this issue and apple washing their hands of any responsibility it will be my last.
    Disappointed that a premium product has such poor backup from the manufacturer. If it was only my phone and not thousands of others I'd have probably paid for a new phone but I'll never give apple another penny again.

    Same problem with my partners iPhone 4s. Restored the device but still no luck. Going to book an appointment but it sounds like we wont have much luck as it is just over a year old.
    Nexus 5 time I think for both of us.

  • Ongoing WiFi issues and Apple Support's lack of support!

    Hi All,
    I bought my MacBook Air in July/August 2012 (i7, 8GB RAM, 256 GB HDD, Mountain Lion). Since the first day, I have had issues with wifi connectivity. My primary use was at the university in Australia, where I had frequent drop outs and at times no connection at all. the university does not officially support Apple products and I was stuck with Apple support asking me to check with network administrators. I was also advised to re-install the OS, reset PRAM etc with no improvements. Then I had a 4 month stint as an exchange student in an Indian university. As i was not using my laptop at the university, I couldnt monitor the WiFi connectivity in these 4 months. Once back in Australia in January 2013, the issue surfaced again. Multiple conversations with Apple Support led me to another 4 re-installations and replacing my router with an uber expensive one. The reasons given by Apple were either the router's quality or interference from other networks. The new router supported 5Ghz band and had no intereference what so ever. I started to notice that the connectivity is far better with the wifi signal showing full range, but internet does not work. All is well if I am sitting right next to the router. The minute i move 5-8 metres away, Internet becomes super slow (from 12-14 Mbps to 1-2 Mbps on speedtest.net) and eventually does not load. At the same time, all other devices, including my iphone 5, ipad 2, ipad mini and other PCs in the apartment works perfectly fine.
    On speaking to Apple Support, i was asked to conduct SNR checks and found out that the SNR readings fluctuate like ****. From 1-2 to 25-30. The Signal strength on my MacBook Air stays at -75dB to -65 dB. Armed with this info, the Airport card was replaced. But the issue still persists. The MacBook Air is presently at Apple waiting to get its display (antennas are embedded here) replaced. But I have lost total confidence in Apple. Is there anyone who had similar issues and found a stable solution? Other symptoms which may be connected are Mail becoming nonresposive intermitently, Power Nap function not working, battery life never more than 4 hours.
    Apple Support has been appalling in a very courteous manner. Even though the commincation and care they took to talk to me, the issue hasnt been solved and its been 11 months!!
    Any comments, advices and support will be appreciated.
    Thank You!

    I am sorry, maybe my comment was vague. I am an engineer too albiet in the medical devices sector. Problem for me is that, I have been talking to Apple for about 11 months now. If you know where I live and how far the Apple Store is, you'd understand my frustration. I have been accomodating so far and do love the customer service experience I get from Apple. I am a proud owner of 2 iPads, an iPad mini, an iPod classic, an iPod Touch, an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5 besides the MacBook Air. They are the most courteous and receptive Customer Service Reps out there. But all the courtesy does not hide the fact that my MBA is 11 months old and still having an issue starting 11 monthds ago. I had taken this machine to the stores numerous times. With the last week, i was getting to a point where I felt I have done enough to try everything except replacement of the machine to try fixing this issue. But now, Apple wont play ball. the rep said, i quote "your machine is almost a year old and you cant expect Apple to replace it". they have support call documents to prove that i have been talking to them about the issue since 11 months and to top it all, I have also purchased the $279 extended warranty. At the time of purchase the rep promised me that 'I would be send a box containing a loan machine while yours can be sent to us and fixed'. if you go through my posts here in mac forum, I had raised the issue here as well.
    Now coming to the question, I have exhausted my options with Apple support and wanted to know if anyone else had the same issue and found a fix. With that maybe i can stop pulling my hair apart - realistically, stop myself from making another long trip to the Apple Store.

  • Quality Issues and Green Strip at Right of Frame in Comp. 3.5

    I just upgraded to Compressor 3.5 with my upgrade of FCS which includes FCP 7 (I guess this is FCS 3 even though the upgrade box doesn't say so). The quality of Compressor's outputs using the same settings is noticeably inferior to the previous versions of Compressor in the FCS releases that included FCP 5 and FCP 6. I also have this green stripe that appears at the extreme right edge of the frame.
    I mostly do h.264 compressions for streaming. In previous versions of Compressor included with FCS 5 and FCS 6, Compressor made incredibly good quality compressions when set to a restriction of 300 kbps for a 500 x 282, 16.9 screen size using the 'best quality' multi-pass encoding setting. In version 3.5 of Compressor, the quality, using the same settings, is absolute crud and I have this green stripe appearing on the extreme right edge of the frame.
    My original source content is usually HDV 1080i60. The problem with my Compressor outputs w/ the green stripe is consistent, however, with footage I've been working with in Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)24p from a Red camera.
    Has anyone else experienced this green stripe issue and know a solution? I'd also appreciate any suggestions on how to improve the output quality when compressing in h.264.
    Also, has anyone gone back to the previous version of Compressor included with FCP 6 (sorry, I don't know what version of Compressor was included w/ FCP 6)? If so, does it play nicely with FCP 7?

    I may have just answered my own question with the green stripe artifact issue in Compressor 3.50. Thought I'd share it to see if it helps anyone else.
    A true 16:9 frame means the height of the frame is 0.5625% of the length (9 / 16 = .5625). I used to compress material with a frame size of 500 X 282. Although this wasn't a true 16:9 frame, the difference didn't create noticeable distortion and previous versions of Compressor handled it ok. In 3.5 this deviation appears to create strange artifacts, in my experience, on the right edge of the screen in the form of a solid green stripe. When I moved my frame size to 512 x 288, the green stripe artifact went away. 288 / 512 = .5625, which is a true 16:9 frame.
    I have no idea if this is just a coincidence or a solution. These are the results of what 30 min. of testing yielded. Perhaps it will be helpful to others in dealing w/ the strange line artifacts on the edges of frames.

  • CS4, what are the most pressing issues and are they solved ???!!!

    I'll be visiting the Adobe booth at the IBC on the 15-th to have a sneak preview of CS4.
    To properly report back what I have seen, I need a short list of the most pressing issues and what interests you most to see solved or added. Just to name a few of the topics:
    1. 64 bit or 32 bit?
    2. Support for 64 bit OS and which ones?
    3. Matte problems solved? (BTW, what were the exact issues with mattes in CS3?)
    4. Titler improvements?
    5. What (new) video formats are supported natively?
    6. What significant improvements are made in integration in the Suite?
    I'm not looking for a repeat of the wishlist, just the most important issues to have a look at.
    Looking forward to your suggestions.

    Here is the news as I got it from one of the technicians and beta testers at the IBC, who showed some interesting things on the current beta version.
    1. The RTM version is not ready yet. It will definitely be this year, but it will not be out in September. Most likely is around November and not all promised features will be available in the 4.0 version, but will be supplied by downloadable patches.
    2. Interlacing/de-interlacing has not been solved. It is still the archaic approach from the '70-s era.
    3. Vista 64 is officially supported, XP 64 is not officially supported, but runs without problems. Several beta testers have not seen any problems with XP-64. All applications are still 32 bit applications, apart from PS Extended, which is 64 bit. Parts of the memory model are ported to 64 bit. The first steps to porting all applications to 64 bit have been taken, but do not expect full support before CS5.
    4. The major improvement has been in the project structure. Every project now has its own information about drive, directory and file structure as part of the project. Files in the project can have different properties in terms of resolution, i or p, so effectively this makes for Edius like capabilities, allowing for different sources in a single project, XDCAM-EX, HDV, AVCHD, P2 sources can be mixed and edited on the same timeline. You can move i material to a p timeline and edit from there.
    5. Adobe Media Encoder is now a separate application.
    6. Dynamic Linking has been improved significantly and encompasses AE, PP, EN in all directions.
    7. Batch processing has been added. You can now add timelines to a render cue and continue editing on the same timeline and there seems to be some intelligence behind it as well.
    8. OMF has been vastly improved.
    9. The garbage matte problems have been solved.
    10. Ultra is still a stand-alone application.
    11. Improvements have been made to Encore, whether that includes closing the DVD was not really known.
    12. Edit in Audition has been restored.
    13. AVCHD is supported, RED support will be added (possibly even for CS3). Note that even on a 4-core MAC the editing experience with AVCHD is tiresome and horrendously slow. You may succeed in editing that kind of material, but only with 8-cores. Otherwise it is like editing HDV on a P4 @ 2.8 GHz with a single disk. It can be done, but it is not a pleasure. The CPU requirements are enormous and IMO most will be heavily disappointed that they need to upgrade their PC before any serious editing can be done, despite all the warnings given.
    14. The titler has not been improved, but the strange windows problems (resizing) have been solved.
    15. Dependency on Red, MainConcept and others make the delivery dates unsure, but it will take some time and new patches are already being worked on.
    16. Adobe at IBC has only beta versions.
    17. One member here (I will not mention names) is probably the best beta tester Adobe has ever had and this person beats all other beta testers by a wide margin in finding bugs. Thanks for all your continued trouble, NN. You will know who I mean if you are the person in question. One of your colleague beta testers was in awe of you.
    The stability and integration of the suite has been vastly improved and tons of bugs have been resolved, so from that point of view, upgrading to CS4 looks very worthwhile. Initially however, third parties have to resolve some issues with their software, like Sony with their Clip Browser, which contains a serious bug, causing PP to crash completely. These bugs need to be resolved shortly and hopefully will be addressed before the RTM version comes out.

  • Start Up issues and RSD

    I've been having fun with my new toy, and as a new user of Mac I have generally been impressed, but this issue is really bugging me. I bought a reconditioned/refurbished MacBook a fortnight ago, and on the second or third day started having problems with start up and freezing. The display gets to the page with Finder in the top bar, but the mouse freezes and nothing seems to unfreeze it including the forced quit. I end up powering off and on again, and the issue may recur another 5-6 times before becoming stable. I have rung the local AppleStore for technical assistance, which involved using the disk utility, verifying permissions etc. That hasn't worked. If I try and connect to the internet after finally getting logged on, part way through the dial up procedure the laptop freezes and again the forced quit doesn't work. I also have an issue that when clicking on a link within Safari eg the User tips library on this site I experience RSD and have to go through the whole rigmarole again of getting the laptop up and running and connected to the internet. i do not have the option of wireless, broadband etc - only dial up. thanks for any insights.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    I have had some other issues with disk errors which the repairers determined to be software induced, and charged me accordingly to fix - I find it a little difficult to accept that a product which I had had less than three weeks, and to which I hadn't added/deleted any applications etc could suddenly have a software problem and wouldn't be covered under the warranty. The repairer did not address the RSD/startup/sleep problem, stating that it wasn't there and that the software issue should have resolved it. It did the same thing at the front reception, so they kept my little book and replaced the logic board. in the week that I have had it back I haven't had any startup issues and only 3 RSD - generally whilst connected to the internet (dial up). I think I can consider the problem resolved!

  • Downloaded Trial - An issues and some questions

    I just downloaded the trial and have some issues and questions I hope someone here can help with.
    My problem:
    I am unable to use the Media encoder to create any output files. I get the error, "The source and output color space are not compatible or a conversion does not exist". This happens when I attempt compositing video clips. If I use a single video clip I don't have this issue.
    Using the Export - Movie menu option works (for the same composite), but the amount of time it takes (a hour and 20 minutes for a 4 minute movie) too much and I can't see myselfe going too far or dooing too much work in this fashion. I believe my hardware specs are well above the required specs. If this normal?
    Questions:
    1. I can't import mpeg video. Is this by design? If so why?
    3. I can't export to wmv? Is this by design, if so why?
    What is the true minimum hardware spec. for someone intending to edit/create HDV? In other words, what is someone out there using that works. I'm really not looking to have to spend a ton of money on a new machine :).

    John,
    Thank you for the info. So I take it I can use mpeg as my source in the purchased product?
    Do you know why I am not able to use the media encoder options to generate any output? What does the error message mean?
    Jeron,
    I'm not sure what your reply is in response to. (since I didn't ask about HDV) :)
    I would like to hear from anyone about the hardware they're using for HDV work.
    Are the minimum specs for HDV cited on the documentation really a viable editing experience?

  • Hmph. (Jumpy) Touchpad issues and Suspend idiosyncrasies.

    (I'll try not to turn this into a novel, but I guess when I have a problem it just happens that I naturally try to describe everything that goes on for full disclosure.  Bear with me.)
    I just got a hold of an older laptop, a Dell Latitude C640, and to my dismay setting up Linux on it hasn't been the walk in the park I'd hoped it'd be.  I read a bunch of articles about Linux on this machine before I got it and most seemed to have a pretty easy time of everything.  Of course this might be because the laptop is quite a few years old and older Linux kernels acted different ways, but I guess I assumed that things would be even easier using a modern distro.
    The Touchpad
    It worked fine on the install of Windows XP that came installed on it, with no problems at all.  Before installing any flavor of Linux I ran Knoppix on it just kind of to make sure things would go OK.  It was a little dated, being Knoppix 5.10, but I figured it'd do for my purposes.
    The first time I booted it seemed to work OK, with the mouse cursor behaving mostly as it should, with a little lag.  I've used this same Knoppix disk on another laptop and it did much the same thing.  After another boot, however, I saw that things weren't going to be so easy.  The cursor immediately drifted off into one of the screen's corners (it didn't seem to care much which one it was in, as long as it was in one) and would refuse to come out.  I could move the cursor a little ways off of the edge of the screen, but not far enough to click anything, and it would immediately go back as soon as I released my finger.  So I tried a few other disks.  First I tried a CD I have for Crunchbang Linux (just a minimalist, Openbox-based Ubuntu flavor), and then Knoppix 4.  Both gave very similar results.  Crunchbang let me have a little bit more control over the cursor for a little while after booting, maybe for about a minute, and then the same behavior cropped up.  I only booted with Knoppix 4 once, but it was pretty much the same deal.
    I started reading up on what might be going on and came across a thread on the Linux Mint forums that seemed to be describing an issue very close to mine (though mine is completely unrelated to the AC adapter and persists whether it's plugged in or not).  Someone in the thread suggested it was a kernel issue, since it's definitely not a hardware issue, so I then booted into a copy of DSL I had lying around, which uses the 2.4 kernel.  Sure enough everything worked without problems.  This caused me to believe, going by some of the conclusions from the Lnux Mint thread and apparently mistakenly, that the issue may have been with the 2.6 Debian kernels, so I figured I'd just get Arch installed and see how things went.
    After getting X set up and working properly I saw that the issue was going to be much the same.  To get around the cursor being dragged into the corner against my will I found out that if I ran without HAL or that if I disabled hot-plugging I could use the touchpad, although not flawlessly.  Here's xorg.conf:

    The "AutoAddDevice" option is the only thing that seems to make any difference in usability at all; without it I can't use the touchpad at all, and with it I can, but to varying degrees.  I've found that right after I boot up everything seems to work exactly how it's supposed to, but shortly after, sometimes 15 seconds, sometimes many minutes, things seem to get kind of unresponsive.  The cursor will go where I want it to go, but it jumps around and does it very slowly.  The mouse buttons also get very unresponsive.  Right click is especially bad, and I often have to hold down the button just to get it to do what I want, but left click is very bad too, requiring me to push the button down for almost a full second, sometimes several times.  Taps on the pad, after things go wrong, also stop being recognized, forcing me to use the buttons (which I'm OK with).  It's usable, but the behavior is not ideal whatsoever—it's rather annoying.
    The most aggravating thing, I think, is that I can't seem to find anyone else using this same model that has this issue.  The latest I've seen is from January: An Ubuntu (8.10) user reports no issues and is very pleased (see comments at the bottom of the page).
    Suspend (both to disk and RAM)
    I actually did install the latest Crunchbang (9.04.01, the 32-bit "Lite" edition) first to see if anything would clear up by installing it rather than running the live CD, but I only had it installed for a few hours.  I didn't really get into messing with xorg.conf that much yet, only really touching "FingerLow" and "FingerHigh" settings, so the touchpad issue was still nagging me.  I did play around a bit though and found out that suspend to RAM and suspend to disk worked pretty much from the go, only requiring that I installed uswsusp.  Issuing a simple "sudo pm-suspend" or "sudo pm-hiberate" put the computer to sleep and it woke back up without any issue at all.
    But suspend on Arch is proving to be a pain in the neck.  Suspend to RAM simply will not work; the computer shuts down but will not resume, leaving me only a blank screen with an unresponsive keyboard.  Suspend to disk works (using hibernate-script as pm-hibernate doesn't seem to do anything at all), but it works very poorly; both suspending and resuming take a very, very long time—so long, in fact, that I'm just better off shutting down and restarting normally, since the boot time is better.  I don't know what accounts for the drastic difference in distros, and this isn't the first experience I've had with suspension working on Ubuntu but not on Arch.  What is different in the Ubuntu implementation of pm-utils than the Arch way?  Is it the Ubuntu kernel?  Is there any way to implement the Ubuntu way with Arch (because, after all, I'd prefer to use Arch)?
    I'm considering installing Crunchbang once again if I can't get things to work the way I want them to in the next few days on Arch.  And, if I can't make the touchpad work in a satisfactory manner on Cruchbang, I might just have to reinstall Windows.  I don't want to do that.

    At least for the moment I've given up and reinstalled Windows XP, but I'm still kind of looking for solutions.  Suspend and hibernate are things I find to be somewhat important, but secondary to the touchpad issues, so I'm focusing on those.
    Out of curiosity today I test out pretty much every live CD I have in the house.  I found an old Ubuntu CD for 6.06 (Dapper) and had a little bit of luck with it.  By default pretty much every live CD configures Xorg to use an additional mouse that isn't present; to fix this I edited the "ServerLayout" section xorg.conf to only use the touchpad.  With this old Ubuntu CD, this achieved the desired result (mostly).  The touchpad worked how it ought to with no lag, but a few features were not implemented.
    Ubuntu 6.06 used the 0.4.3 version of the synaptics driver; newer Linux distros usually use 0.99 and above.  I tried my Knoppix 5.1 CD again, editing xorg.conf again to reflect the absence of an external mouse, but I did not get the behavior I was hoping for.  When I checked I found out that Knoppix 5.1 came with the 0.14.6 version of the synaptics driver.
    Turns out that 0.14.5 was something of a turning point for the driver.
    Makefile support for Xorg 7.0 has been added.
    Two-finger scrolling and pressure dependent motion
    speed have been implemented. A new parameter has
    been added to give greater control over tap
    behavior.
    (http://freshmeat.net/projects/synaptics/releases/228794)
    I suspect that the problem is coming from the addition of the "pressure dependent motion speed."  I don't know what options control this to toy with them.
    However, I'm not so sure.  This sounds like it would be something that would toy with my mind, making me think I'm experiencing "mouse lag" when certain options are really just conflicting, but as I had to point out again on another forum on which I posted this same thread, when using Arch (and the most recent synaptics driver) things started out fine and only after a little while, sometimes less than a minute, sometimes many, would things start to act up.  Either some progress is being made to resolve this problem with the latest releases, or something is going wrong internally that I do not understand.  I just cannot understand why, with the newest drivers, it's only after some use that the problem kicks in while when using all others the problems are immediate.
