WPA2 802.1x with MS RADIUS, LDAP, Clean Access

We are in a multivendor enviornment using NAC and WCS.  We would like to implement WPA2 Enterprise.  We currently authenticate with LDAP to place users in proper roles.
Not 100% sure on this.  As far as I know, it is not possible to implement 802.1x with LDAP.....so how could we use LDAP and a Radius server together in order to implement WPA2 Enterprise?  Is this possible?  Any documentation out there that I have yet to find explaining this?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Ben

Hi,
Let's clarify all possibilities and you can chose one from there :-)
1) the Wireless Controller (WLC) can act as radius server. The feature is called "local eap". So the WLC authenticates the client (wpa2 if you like).
The WLC can use an LDAP database as user database. The only restrictions are that you cannot use "mschapv2" methods. So only peap-gtc,eap-fast-gtc and eap-tls. Of those 3, only eap-tls is present on the client default windows supplicant.
2) You can have a complete radius server like Cisco ACS. However the limitation coming with LDAP remains. Unless your database is Active Directory in which case ACS can integrate with it and allow for all eap methods.
3) If you go for WPA enterprise, that means you will authenticate users 2 times. One with dot1x to join the wireless and one with NAC afterwards to get network connectivity. Again if you have active directory, you can go with "single sign on" so that users never have to enter their credentials. Otherwise they will have to enter them twice.
Apart from that fact, NAC pretty much doesn't care if your wireless is open or dot1x-secured, it comes after the dot1x authentication anyway.
I hope this clarifies ?

  • Cisco WLC 2500 - 802.1x with Vasco Radius SMS OTP

    Hello folks,
I have what seems to be a complex implementation with many things that need to be done on a customers network and I wanted to be pointed in the right direction.
The current scenario is such, the customer has a Cisco WLC 2500 device that has 3 access points(these are in the same AP group) connected to it. There is one SSID that I will call PRODUCTION here that some domain users use to connect to the local network. The customer has requested to have a GUEST SSID added to the WLC where guest users will connect to and recieve a SMS OTP for authentication.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I will obviously need to segment the SSIDs to have them running on different subnets to ensure that guest users do not have access to the production network once they authenticate. In order to do this I will need to configure Dynamic VLAN assignment for the Cisco WLC and connect it to a 802.1x port on the switch.
Now what is not clear is I am not interested in authenticating the users that connect via "Production SSID" and want to bypass authentication for those users and have them assigned to the default vlan (or maybe perhaps have them authenticate via LDAP on the AD), however I want to force the "GUEST" SSID users to authenticate so that they may recieve an SMS OTP (reason for this is to force guests to register their phone numbers to use the internet so that Illegal activity may be tracked).
1)So would it be possible to bypass authentication(or authenticate them via LDAP) for the PRODUCTION SSID as only domain users would know the SSID password to log on and have them by default assigned to the production subnet (default vlan) but force the GUEST SSID users to another VLAN via 802.1x sms otp?
2)*Important* Another issue that is not clear is will I be able to directly configure AAA Radius settings on the Cisco WLC to directly authenticate with the VASCO Radius OTP and recieve a challenge-response(required for OTP) during authentication? As I have seen from Ciscos Dynamic VLAN assignment docuementation (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_configuration_example09186a008076317c.shtml) additional IETF Radius Perimeters are used such as Tunnel-Private-Group-ID etc are used which I can't seem to configure on the Vasco.
I do beileve this is a great project in helping me understand the INs and OUTs of CISCO WLC as well as Wireless NAC, If anyone could enlighten me and point me in the right direction I would be forever in debt. Much appreciated.

On your WLAN you can enable AES and TKIP. Just know that some clients mau have issue when they see both TKIP and AES. Ive had pretty good success with this in the past. Dont forget, you also need to enable WMM allowed to get N rates.
But you will need to configure AES on the client as well to support N rates.

    HI all!
I am trying to configure AAA authentication and authorization with Cisco 3725 (IOS 12.4(17)) for 802.1x and ACS 4.2 with VLAN assignment to my Windows XP client. (trying to assign VLAN 100 in my scenario).

I've tried multiple ways to cope with this problem but nothing was helpfull...
    Tunnel-Medium-Type  [65]  6   01:ALL_802
I use only ACS Radius attributes and chose ony what ACS allows me to choose (Tunnel-medium-type: 802).
    Screenshot n attachment.
The same situation occurs when i try to use some Vendor Specific Attributes (Cisco-AV-Pair)  - downloadable ACEs to my user, and again, i see Radius attributes in my debug but nothing is applied to my L3 Switch.
    What am i missing?

  • 802.1x, eDirectory, and RADIUS

    Hello all:
I hope that I am posting on the correct forum.
We currently have a Cisco ACS 3.3 which we have configured to use
eDirectory as an external LDAP directory. We are currently able to set
up access to our routers and switches via TACACs and successfully
authenticate via user names and passwords stored in eDirectory, so we
know that the LDAP access is working. eDirectory version is 8.7.3.4. OS
    is Netware 6.5 sp 3.
We are now embarking on setting up wireless authentication utilizing
the AEGIS client from Meetinghouse as our supplicant. We have been
successful in authenticating to our test wireless AP (Cisco 1200) with
a user setup in an access group on the ACS using the ACS as a RADIUS
server. We are authenticating via LEAP. However, we have not been able
to authenticate using eDirectory usernames and passwords. Upon
reviewing various posts I have seen info about adding RADIUS attributes
to eDirectory to use the FreeRADIUS server. Is this necessary with the
ACS device? Do we need to change our protocol to EAP-TTLS as is
suggested in other posts or do we need to set up simple passwords? What
security considerations do we want to take into account?
If anyone has successfully implemented this configuration, please feel
free to contact me directly. We want to leverage eDirectory and our
client's experience with this platform to make wireless security as
seemless and secure as possible. This is a school district and we want
to be able to limit our user access via login names that they enter on
any machine in the district rather than via machine certificates. That
way if we want to deny a student access for disciplinary reasons, we
    can implement it very easily.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance that can be provided!!!!!!

I sent you an email regarding our situation. Have you received it yet
and if so have you had a chance to respond to the wireless
    authentication questions.
    Thanks

  • Wired 802.1x with PEAP

I have manage to get wired 802.1x working using Windows Active Directory as the database. With machine authentication, single-signon can be achieved.
    Setup:
    C3750 switch - Cisco ACS 3.2 - Windows AD
    Sequence of events:
    1. 802.1x machine authentication
    2. User logs in to domain
    3. 802.1x with user credentials
But, I have the following issues:
    i. If user logs in using local account, it takes 3 minutes (default dot1x switch timers) for the port to turn unauthorized. Is it possible to place the port in unauthorized state immediately?
ii. If the user 802.1x login has dynamic VLAN assignment, the AD scripts do not run. It seems that the AD scripts can't run if there is a change of IP address upon login (difference in VLAN for 'machine authentication' and 'user login').
    Any solution for this?
    Tks

    2 issues here:
*Cached credentials for Microsoft supplicannts. Microsoft's authentication strategy in general reflects, and WLAN roaming would be difficult without the use of cached credentials. If cached credentials are not desired, would recommend another supplicant.
    * Falied Authentication for a local account. It should try to dot1x authenticate this user. For PEAP as an example, you would see the username as \. Now, a port will only be placed into a HELD state if a RADIUS-Reject is sent to the switch. A RADIUS-Reject will only be sent to the switch if the attempt is actually "failed" as opposed to silently discarded, packet lost in transit, etc. Taking 3 minutes to actually fail an attempt is indeed way too long, but the switch is probably doing what RADIUS is telling it to do. (this can be verified by a sniffer trace or debugs). Correspinding logs on RADIUS would help as well.

  • Wireless 802.1x with Window 7

I have a WLC 6.0,  ACS 3.3 and the SSID is setup to use 802.1x with Peap Authentication.   The clients are using Windows 7 to connect to wireless.     To get the clients connected they have to go into there network properties if the wireless card,  configure the client to use PEAP,  uncheck validate server certificate, and also uncheck use computer name to login into windows.  This works fine and the user to able to connect to to wireless after dong all these steps and then entering in there Windows Username and Password.    The customer is saying that this is to many steps for the end user and they just want the user to to click on the SSID and connect.  If wireless could also be setup to use  there windows username and password   would be a bonus.  I'm basically looking for a solution that is simple but is also secure as well.  I know that's an oxymoron.   Is there anything I could do to make the wireless process simpler.  Either by going with a different security authentication or by doing something different on the clients computers.   Thanks for any help and suggestions.

This is a script that we use on our campus (University of Leeds), that self configures an 802.1x connection and when a user connects to an 802.1x connection merely asks them for their username and password, which then remained cached.
The .exe you create takes away all the techy bits that do 'confuse' some users, even if they are provided with well written documentation.

  • 802.1x with ACS and Windows AD

    Hi
Im trying to setup 802.1x with ACS 5.2 but am struggling as its very differnet to ACS 4.2.
I have setup the ACS to be the domain and think i have setup up the External Idnetity Store, however when i try to authenticate a pc using authentication Medthod 'PEAP (EAP-MSCHAPv2), i get a failure reason '22056 Subject not found in the applicable identity store'
    Marco

    Hi Marco,
i guess you've missed a mapping configuration in the Access Policy Section.
Create a Access Service name it AS-802.1x select User Select Service Type and select Network Access. Select the Policy Structure Identity and Authorization. Select PEAP as allowed Protocol. Click Finish
You'll see the new service click Identity.
Select the identity source you've created then save.
    Click on authorization
Select a default authorization rule permit access and save.
Create a Service Access Rule name it 802.1x
Select Protocol Radius as Condition and as Compound Condition select RADIUS-IETF:Service-Type match Framed then select the service you created before.
    then you can try again.
    regards

  • 802.1x with /21 subnet

    Hello,
I am currently deploying 802.1x using following devices:
XP - HP Procurve - Cisco ACS - Active Directory
I am able to forward dynamic vlan id to employe and consultant after authentication.
Bit how to deal with big site having a large number of people?
Without 802.1x, they are splitted in class C subnet to restrict obvious big subnet limitation like broadcast domain.
How to assign a pool of vlans to one group of users instead of 1 vlan?
    Thanks for your help.Stephane

802.1X authenticated ports are assigned to a VLAN that is based on the username of the host that is connected to the port. VLAN assignments work with the RADIUS server, which has a database of username-to-VLAN mappings. After a successful 802.1X authentication of the port, the RADIUS server sends the VLAN in which the user needs to be given access.

  • 802.1x with Vlan assignment and IP phone and PC

I have a Catalyst 4510R and I want to im plement 802.1x with dynamic VLAN assignment via Radius server. I am going to plug to switch ports Cisco IP phones and PCs (PCs are plugged in the IP phone).
For this implementation I need to configure the switch port in mode trunk because I have voice vlan corresponding IP phone and data vlan corresponding to PC.
However I have read that I can not enable 802.1x on a trunk port.
    How could I configure this?
I need that when the PC is authenticated correctly is assigned to his cooresponding data vlan and the IP phone is in the voice vlan.
    Thanks

You should configure the port as an access port with an aux-vlan. Here's an example:
    interface GigabitEthernet2/2
    switchport access vlan 701
    switchport mode access
    switchport voice vlan 702
    load-interval 30
    qos trust device cisco-phone
    qos trust cos
    auto qos voip cisco-phone
    dot1x pae authenticator
    dot1x port-control auto
    tx-queue 3
    bandwidth percent 33
    priority high
    shape percent 33
    spanning-tree portfast
    spanning-tree bpduguard enable
    service-policy output autoqos-voip-policy
    Hope this helps,

  • WLC 5508 802.1x with AES

    Hi,
We have a staff WLAN on Cisco WLC 5508. We use 802.1x with TKIP with authentication from RADIUS server. We deployed new 802.11n APs but on staff WLAN we cannot enable 802.11n because of the TKIP encryption. Can we just simply change the encryption without changing any other configuration to support 802.11n data rates?

On your WLAN you can enable AES and TKIP. Just know that some clients mau have issue when they see both TKIP and AES. Ive had pretty good success with this in the past. Dont forget, you also need to enable WMM allowed to get N rates.
But you will need to configure AES on the client as well to support N rates.

  • 802.1x with Switch SRW2024-Web

    Hi@all,
i want to implement a port based NAC with Windows Server 2008 NPS acting as RADIUS and some Linksys/Cisco SRW2024 - WebView Switches, using EAPoL and MD5-Auth.
    (SRW2024: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9989/index.html)
I am able to authenticate any Supplicant and open the port on the switch. But i've a probem with de VLAN-ID.
I only wan't to authenticate the user on the Switch-Port. All incoming traffic is unttaged an the Switch should tag the frames with configured PVID in Access Mode. But the switch doesn't either tag with configured PVID nor tag with the RADIUS-attributs:
    Tunnel-Type -> VLAN
    Tunnel-Medium-Type -> 802
    Tunnel-Privat-Group-ID -> <VLAN-ID>
anyone an idea, what i'm doing wrong?

Well, i don't understand the world anymore....after the switch was accepting the radius-attributes,
i removed the radius-attributes again...since that, the configured PVID in access-mode are working also.
sometimes these switches driving me crazy.

  • 871 802.1x with vlan assignment aka dynamic vlan

you can do vlan assignment on 871W wireless using the local radius server but unfort only LEAP which is N.G.
I have been pounding on wired 802.1x PEAP (which works) trying to get vlan re-assignment. Have tried with IAS which I am using to do vlan reassignment with the WLC so I have the idea of how it works with IAS. With 871, no go. Have also tried ACS for radius with same results: can't escape the switchport's vlan. With debug radius local you can see the tunnel attributes for reassignment plainly but with debug radius with IAS or ACS, nada.
    Using 12.4(6)T advanced IP.
I have just seen that 12.4(4)CX2 has "802.1x with vlan reassignment" but the download is MIA. Wonder what's up with that?
Has anybody got this to work? Any info much appreciated
    Greg Turner

SSH isn't available on the SI version of the 2950 as you require the Crypto features and these are not available for the SI (the documentation is a little vague here but trust me I have upgraded one and it doesn't like it...). The documentation says 'Switches that support only the SI cannot run the cryptographic image.'
802.1x with VLAN assignment is available only in the latest IOS - or at least since 12.1(22).
    SNMPv3 is supported.

  • 1240AG WPA2 and PSK for non radius clients

does this device support this options?
We want to move to WPA2 enterprise and use our radius server (windows IAS), but we want to hand out a key to non domain computers. We have production machines that arent on the domain for various reasons.
2nd question, does the AP allow for creating a 2nd "Guest" wireless for visitors?
    thanks!

    Hi Shayne,
The Cisco 1240 supports WPA2/AES.Yes, the can provide different security policys via different SSIDs. For example:
    SSID#1 - Corporate - WPA2/AES 802.1X
    SSID#2 - CorporatePSK - WPA2/AES PSK
    SSID#3 - Guest
There is a good deal of configuration to make this happen. But yes this is supported..
Here is a link how to configure SSIDs on a autonomous access points

  • 802.1x (DOT1x) and Cisco Clean Access 3140

    Hi,
We have about 300 remote sites and would like to implement an authentication mechanism to authenticate end-devices (Windows PCs) before allowing access to the network. We thought we could implement DOT1x on our Cisco 2960, 3750 and 4500 series switches and send the "PC-switch" access requests to our centrally located Cisco Clean Access 3140 NAC servers -back at the HQ sites. We understand the NAC servers will be used to authenticate (among other things) the end-users workstations to ensure each workstation is a company owned PC and all  the security parameters are installed and up today. -RIGHT?
Can the Cisco Clean Access 3140 server perform the Authentication security checks from the 802.1x (DOT1x) enabled switches?
Does the Cisco Clean Access 3140 server have to be inline (on the users subnet) and/or be centrally located?
Is the Cisco Clean Access 3140 still usable?
    Thanks
    Frank

unfortunately because they are Avaya phones, the easy answer CDP-Bypass fails in this instance. When you plug in the phone, the switch will assume it's the 'single host' for this port, and restrict the port due to the authentication for the phone failing. Maybe you can just hard-code the voice-vlans on each phone, but that could get tedious depending on the amount of phones.
I believe there is a DHCP option you can pass back that indicates the phone should be running on vlan 200, but for this to work you'd also need to set up a pre-auth ACL that would allow DHCP to work in the unauthorized state. I think it's 147 off the top of my head.
Another solution (which isn't what you originally wanted, but it would work) is to just use multi-domain instead of single-host, and authenticate both the phone and the PC. The raduis server should be able to distinguish between what is configured as a phone and what is a host, and will send back the appropriate vlan if configured correctly.
What are using for a radius server?
