Writing Applications for Palm OS and Pocket PC

Hi All,
We are trying to architect mobile applications for both Windows CE (Pocket PC) and Palm OS which will access the local handheld database for storing and retrieving data. This local database will then be synchronized with the central database (via wireless or hotsync).
Is it possible to write a set of common java code (J2ME) and be able to do the above task ?
Thanks, Fazal

it is possible to run MIDP apps on both. OR, you could wait until the PDAP for Palms comes out, which has some similar AWT components as PersonalJava/Personal profile running on WinCE.
to run MIDP apps on Palm/POSE:

to run MIDP apps on Wince:

  • New to java: have to develop for palm, symbian and pocket pc

    Hello,
I am fairly new to Java. After a long time of searching for a technology which allows it to develop an application for Palm OS, Symbian OS and Pocket PC I am curious if one can do this with Java. I searched the Palm and Symbian homepages and found that those OSes can handle MIDlets. I could not found if they also can handle full Java-applications. For the Pocket PC I could not found a solution to run Java applications or MIDlets.
    My questions:
    - is it possible to run Java applications on Palm, Symbian an Pocket PC?
    - if yes, which tools are the best to use? (SUN One?)
    - is it possible to write "real" applications (for instance a spreadsheet) as MIDlet or can one use "real"-Java to develop applications for Palm/Symbian/Pocket PC?
Sorry if this questions sound a little stupid an thanks for every help/suggestion!
    Kind regards,
    Martijn

Normaly such devices only know MIDlets. This is becaus they do not have the power of a PC. In addition to that they are to different in hardware so an other API is to use.
I think it is notpossible to write a VM to do the same as a PC now.
    Hope this will help you.

After having created an apple ID with Italian itunes I moved to UK and I mistakenly created a new Apple ID. However, when I want to update the application on my Ipad and mac computer I am asked fo the old password which I have fogotten. I have also forgotten the answers to the security questions. I made a mistake also with the email i gave and so i cant verify a new password that i want to create. How can you help me?

Normally you need to call Apple Care for the country where the ID is located. You have changed countries and complicated it by making a new ID. I don't know what to suggest beyond calling Apple Care for Italy and asking them to help you recover the old ID.

  • Anyone have any idea which is the best application for taking notes and essay writting?

im starting my first year of university and i was wondering what would the best application for taking notes on be? and also whats the easiest, most reliable and effective way to transfer documents off the ipad? Any thoughts on printing aswell?
will be appreciating all the help i can get!

You're going to get as many answers to that question as there are people to answer it. You don't state if you want to take handwritten notes or if you will be typing. For handwritten notes, I really like Noteshelf. It has lots of export options, my favorite being to Evernote (which you might want to look into as well for storage). For typing notes, I'd go with Pages, Documents to Go or QuickOffice. For working with PDFs, I like PDF Expert.
I've recently heard good things about Note Anytime. It is free for a limited time, so it'st probably worth downloading to try out.

  • Application for both internal and external use

    Hi,
I am looking to develop an application for a small company that will be an order tracking system. The app would need to be accessible externally over the web for customers to log in and check their order status, but also internally by the company staff to update statuses, enter comments etc.
Does anyone have any suggestions or best practices regarding security when pushing an app to the external world?
One thing I considered was having two apps, one for the internal usage and one for the external usage, both with separate parsing schemas. Then create everything under the internal schema and grant select up to the external schema. That way it ensures at the DB level that the application can only read from certain tables. Then anything which the external site does need to update, either do it through a staging table, or grant up the appropriate tables to have insert allowed. Then put triggers on the tables which will raise an exception if columns are updated from a user who isn't authenticated etc.
Does this all sound ok? Is it overkill? Anyone any other suggestions? I want to avoid having multiple databases or instances, simply because for the size of the company it doesn't warrant such complexity (or cost/resources). We won't be storing any "sensitive" data so to speak, but obviously need to protect against malicious intruders.
    Thanks

When looking to design your application in this scenario it is best to assume the worst and see what impact it has on your environment. There are several attack scenarios that immediately spring to mind
A problem in the Apex framework leads to running arbitrary SQL statements.
A problem in the code leads to running arbitrary SQL statements.
A problem in the code leads to cross-site scripting attacks.
Configuration problems mean Apex components are available to the Internet.
Obviously if cost is an issue there will always be a compromise in security so make sure you can do the the absolute best with the resources available to you. Separating the Internet side from the Internal side as much as you can is always a good idea.
Sony was recently fined in the UK for not doing enough to protect personal data, so you should have evidence to ensure you have done the absolute best you can.
    Two things available over the internet currently to help you;
    https://secure.recx.co.uk/ApexSecUI/ - ApexSec Security Scanner
    http://www.enkitec.com/products/esert_cloud - eSert cloud
Both provide free credits to scan your application for security problems for free.

  • Separate Palm desktop installs for Palm M505 and its apps and Palm Treo 680 and its apps on same Windows XP computer?

    Hello:
I'm trying to do a workaround. I've got a Palm M505 that has a terrific keyboard that hooks up to it. This lets me write documents in a very portable way. The Treo 680 never had the equivalent, really full-sized external keyboard made compatible with it. So, I want to create documents on the M505 but otherwise mostly use the Treo 680.
Here's the rub. When I tried to sync both devices to my Palm Desktop version 4.1.2 for Windows XP, it didn't work. Hotsync tries to synchronize apps that won't work on the M505. Also, the versions of Documents to Go are very different (5.x versus 8.x).
I would love to have a separate Palm Desktop installation for each device, so I can have a nice desktop environment for each by launching them separately. But, the Palm Desktop installation "wizard" shuts down and won't give me the opportunity to do a separate Desktop install.
Any ideas other than buying an ultra-small laptop and dropping this kludgy scheme? For instance, if I were to copy the installed files from one directory to another, would this work, or would it not be set up in the Registry?
    Thanks!

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Okay. Stubbornness pays off! I was able to beam documents between my Palm M505 and Treo 680, avoiding the need for complicated syncing of both Palms to my laptop machine. I was also able to beam documents from both Palms to my Dell Inspiron M300 laptop, running Windows XP Pro.
When beaming between Palm devices, the results were better. In the M505, Documents to Go version 5.004 doesn't translate documents into Microsoft Word format but into something it calls Word to Go. The Treo has DTG version 8.003, which is able to read files in Word to Go format and save in native Microsoft Word for Windows format.
However, even when beaming a Word to Go (old format) document directly onto the Desktop of my Windows XP machine, it gave me a document I could open, with the text I'd input following a bunch of characters Word obviously didn't understand. If I add the file from my desktop to the newer Documents to Go version on my laptop, I expect it will translate it into a Word file when it syncs to the Treo but haven't tested that. In either case, beaming between Palm devices is the easiest solution and completely solves the problem.
For any readers who are interested, the reason I've so stubbornly tried to solve this problem is that I'm a fast touch typist. My old Palm M505 plugs directly into a wonderful, old Palm Portable Keyboard that is full-sized. Because it's a hard-wired connection, I can type fast. That old keyboard compresses into the same folded footprint as some new foldover external keyboards. It does this even though much bigger by folding in an accordian-like fashion, with four flat surfaces folder together. That keyboard design now exists in some of the keyboards sold by IGo corporation (their old name for it was Sierra Stowaway Bluetooth Keyboard). But, they were unable to figure out how to handshake their Bluetooth with the odd Bluetooth configuation in the Treo 680. Why Palm made the Bluetooth library different in the Treo 680 from other Treos is a mystery to me, but enough of this tangent. Some interested in this workaround may be curious for similar reasons.

I am considering purchasing a wireless keyboard for a Palm TX. Will the 3169WW work? If purchased new, what driver will it come with ( what driver do I need?). How universal is this keyboard? I have Adobe Reader 3.05 on the TX. Should I be looking for a newer version. Thank You!
    Post relates to: Palm TX

I just deployed a "new (!) TX and the Palm Bluetooth Keyboard, after years of using the Tungsten T3.  For the most part I'm happy with both.  There's just a little downside to the keyboard, that is, the lack of a key combination to duplicate the Graffiti stroke that involkes shortcuts (these are the mostly custom texts that you set up in Prefs to insert by making the stroke followed by just one or two or three characters).  On the Ultrathin Keyboard, which I used with the T3, the fn-ctrl combination made the shortcut stroke on the screen, after which I could type (for example) "dts," which would insert a date and time stamp.  I think the Palm infrared wireless keyboard does the same thing.  If there is such a functionality on the BT keyboard, it's not documented and I cannot find it.  (I suspect that it may have been left out because it may be mostly used with smartphones, Treo series etc., which have the hardware keyboards and so dispense with Graffiti, but I use the Graffiti shortcuts a lot, so this omission makes me a somewhat unhappy camper.  If anyone has discovered a way to invoke this function on the BT keyboard, I would be very interested.)

  • Applications for the iPhone and Corporate Support for device usage....

Not all applications are appropriate for internet access only. For example, I use a software package called eWallet to store my personal information in...I would prefer NOT to store this type of information on the internet. I love the interface for this device, but the lack of applications and Apple's unwillingness to open the platform up for developers will be enough for me to return back to a Blackberry or a Treo.
Also, the company I work for is certainly not willing to allow employees to install iTunes to synchronize contacts, calendars and phone information...I think Apple has a huge task ahead trying to break into the corporate world with this device.

That is true - if they were aiming this at the corporate world. As you can tell from the activation process that you can't even HAVE a business account and have it work with your iPhone, I don't think that's the direction they are looking at.

  • How can I get rid of the vuzit application for pdf downloads and, instead, use Acrobat?

When I try to access a document that is in pdf, I always end up having to wait for the vuzit nitro pdf reader. I usually end up switching to Safari or Chrome to avoid waiting and trying to use this program which seems to serve no useful purpose.

I have eventually uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it.
I lost all bookmarks and passwords, but I have not (yet?) heard of VUZIT again.

I installed the software, installed Adobe Reader for Palm OS and performed a HotSync. I then tried importing a PDF file to my handheld with no trouble. Then I saw via the Palm website that I could sync using isync via the isync conduit 1.2 from apple. So I downloaded that and followed the instructions to install it. Now my addresses and calendars sync flawlessly, but I can't seem to get Adobe Reader for Palm to transfer any more PDF files.
Has the isync conduit disabled a conduit for Adobe? Is there any way to fix this? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you,
    J
P.S. I'm using Hotsync manager 3.2.1 and Palm Desktop 4.2.1

    Michael,
I've figured out what the problem is. When you install the isync conduit it removes any conduits that it feels it conflicts with. i.e. contacts, calendars, to do lists etc. It also, for some reason, removed the Adobe conduit named AcroConduit. I think this is a glitch in the isync conduit. Thankfully, the conflicting conduits that isync removes aren't deleted. They are simply put into a folder named "disabled conduits" located in the main "library" folder->"Application Support" -> "Palm HotSync", right next to the "Conduits" folder. So I just dragged the AcroConduit back to the "Conduits" folder and configured the conduit in HotSync Manager and, viola, all seems to be working fine... sort of.
It seems that Apple's Address Book and iCal don't exactly sync picture perfect on the palm pilot. email addresses where phone numbers should be, some addresses not showing up at all, calendars not showing up in the correct headings such as personal, business, etc. Apple and Palm could do better.
