Writing to a server using a servlet

does anyone know how to write a file (i.e. txt, htm, etc...) to a server using a servlet.
i'm using tomcat 4.0.1 and an IIS
i've been trying to figure out how to do this for a few days now and have not been able to figure it out.
can anyone show me how?
thanks
Andy

i got the above code working, but now when i try to pass a vector into the mix i'm not having any luck.
i haven't even been able to get a POST message to appear.
i think there is something wrong with my client-side code....
/*******applet********/
public void sendVector(Vector sendingVector)
URL baseURL = getCodeBase();
String protocol = baseURL.getProtocol();
String host = baseURL.getHost();
int port = 808;
try
String urlSuffix = "/servlet/contactlist.WriteToServlet";
URL servletURL = new URL(protocol, host, port, urlSuffix);
URLConnection conn = servletURL.openConnection();
// inform the connection that we will send output and accept input
conn.setDoInput(true);
conn.setDoOutput(true);
// Don't use a cached version of URL connection.
conn.setUseCaches (false);
conn.setDefaultUseCaches (false);
// Specify the content type that we will send binary data
conn.setRequestProperty ("Content-Type", "application/octet-stream");
// send the student object to the servlet using serialization
ObjectOutputStream outputToServlet = new ObjectOutputStream(conn.getOutputStream());
// serialize the object
outputToServlet.writeObject( sendingVector );
outputToServlet.flush();
outputToServlet.close();
} catch (IOException io) { io.printStackTrace(); }
} // end sendVector
/*********servlet*************/
public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response)
throws ServletException, IOException
try
// get an input stream from the applet
ObjectInputStream inputFromApplet = new ObjectInputStream(request.getInputStream());
// read the serialized student data from applet
Vector passInfo = (Vector)inputFromApplet.readObject();
inputFromApplet.close();
for(int i =0; i < passInfo.size(); i++) System.out.println(passInfo.get(i));
// make this so that the vector filename has no spaces
FileWriter writer = new FileWriter("G:\\Intranet\\wwwroot\\Contact\\contactlist\\Departments\\" + getFileTitle(passInfo.get(1).toString()) + ".htm");
// prints information to the file
int a;
for(a = 0; a < (passInfo.size()-1); a++)
{ writer.write(passInfo.get(a) + "\n");
writer.write(passInfo.get(a).toString());
writer.flush();
writer.close();
catch(Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); }

  • Writing an XML file using a Servlet

    Hello, I'm trying to code a servlet that receives a POST from a HTTP and output its data to a XML file, the problem is that I get the following error:
    The XML page cannot be displayed
    Cannot view XML input using style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.
    XML document must have a top level element. Error processing resource 'http://localhost:8080/XMLSender/xmlsend'.
    I don't know what happens, because I'm NOT trying to show the content, just to save it, I post my code here so anyone can help me, please. Thanks in advance.

    writer.write("<body>" + cadenabody + "</body>");
    writer.write("</root>");
    writer.close();
    It still do not create my file "salida.xml", still don't know why. Any help is welcome.

  • Problem connecting RMI-Server using a servlet

    Hi All..
    I have a RMI-client server model woring fine in AIX box.I am currently in a need to create one web client(may be with servlet or JSP).
    I wrote a sample servlet which try to connect to the RMI server. But when I run the servlet Its simply try to connect and then wait for unlimited time,not even print any exception/error.
    Both my RMI sevrer and Tomcat are in the same box.
    I am sending the servlet code for your reference.
    import java.rmi.*;
    import java.rmi.registry.Registry;
    import java.rmi.registry.LocateRegistry;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import ir77.mon.engine.*;
    public class WebClient extends HttpServlet
    public void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res) throws ServletException, IOException
    XmlServerIntf xmlServerIntf = null;
    PrintWriter out = res.getWriter();
    res.setContentType("text/plain");
    try{
    out.println("Connecting to server......");
    //Seems this one is sufficient.(either this code or the below one)
    //String strServerUrl = "rmi://" + "192.168.100.22" + "/ir77.mon.engine";
    //xmlServerIntf = (XmlServerIntf) Naming.lookup(strServerUrl);
    //Try with this one also
    Registry reg = LocateRegistry.getRegistry("192.168.100.22", 2004);
    xmlServerIntf = (XmlServerIntf) reg.lookup("rmi://192.168.100.22/ir77.mon.engine");
    out.println("Connected to server");
    catch (Exception e){
    System.out.println("Exception in WebClient"+e);
    when I run the servlet in the browser with "http://192.168.100.22:8080/WebClient" its simply prints " Connecting to server......" and waits.
    Note : 192.168.100.22 - where my rmi server starts and 2004 -where I created by rmiregistry.I created it using LocateRegistry.createRegistry(2004);
    I have tried starting tomcat with "-security" option too but no responds as well.
    Do I have to provide some grant permission in catlina.policy file?If yes what?
    currently I have tried with giving all permission..
    Do I need to change the RMI server code?
    Any help will be highly appreciated....

    Hi genady,
    Oh....Ya I like to...I thought no body was interested...as I didn't get any reply from anybody....
    Well The first thing is that with the look up method in the servlet
    it should be like :
    Registry reg = LocateRegistry.getRegistry("ip address of the rmi server", port number);
    RMIServerInterface = (type cast with RMIServerInterface) reg.lookup("rmi binding string");
    Now you are able to get the server interface object & you can call any method.
    Next you have to provide the grant permission in the catalina.policy file to the folder where you have your application like....
    grant codeBase "file:${catalina.home}/webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/classes/-" {
    permission java.security.AllPermission;
    Or you can give specific permissions also.
    Finally you have to run the tomcat as : $catalina.sh start -security
    Note: One more thing you have to keep in mind that's the structure of your application. ie com.mon.yourapp.......u have to create the same structure in tomcat's classes folder .
    Its done...........

  • File upload and download using jsp/servlets

    How to upload any file to the server using jsp/servlets. . Help me out

    You can also try the Jenkov HTTP Multipart File Upload. It's a servlet filter that is easy to add to your web-project. After adding it, you can access both request parameters and the uploaded files easily. It's more transparent than Apache Commons File Upload. There is sufficient documentation to get you started, and there is a forum if you have any questions.
    Jenkov HTTP Multipart File Upload is available under the Apache license, meaning its free to use.

  • Uploading a file to server using servlet (Without using Jakarta Commons)

    Hi,
    I was trying to upload a file to server using servlet, but i need to do that without the help of anyother API packages like Jakarta Commons Upload. If any class for retrieval is necessary, how can i write my own code to upload from client machine?.
    From
    Velu

    <p>Why put such a restriction on the solution? Whats wrong about using that library?
    The uploading bit is easy - you put a <input type="file"> component on the form, and set it to be method="post" and enctype="multipart/form-data"
    Reading the input stream at the other end - thats harder - which is why they wrote a library for it. </p>
    why i gave the restriction is that, i have a question that <code>'can't we implement the same upload'</code>
    I was with the view that the same can be implemented by our own code right?

  • How to upload a file into server using j2ee jsp and servlet with bean?

    How to upload a file into server using j2ee jsp and servlet with bean? Please give me the reference or url about how to do that. If related to struts is more suitable.
    Anyone help me please!

    u don't need j2ee and struts to do file uploading. An example is as such
    in JSP. u use the <input> file tag like
    <input type="file"....>You need a bean to capture the file contents like
    class FileUploadObj {
        private FormFile srcFile;
        private byte[] fileContent;
        // all the getter and setter methods
    }Then in the servlet, you process the file for uploading
        * The following loads the uploaded binary data into a byte Array.
        FileUploadObj form = new FileUploadObj();
        byte[] byteArr = null;
        if (form.signFile != null) {
            int filesize = form.srcFile.getFileSize();
            byteArr = new byte[filesize];
            ByteArrayInputStream bytein = new ByteArrayInputStream (form.srcFile.getFileData());
            bytein.read(byteArr);
            bytein.close();
            form.setFileContent(byteArr);
        // Write file content using Writer class into the destination file in the server.

  • Using a servlet to read a pdf file that is in remote server

    Hi,
    I read some topics about how to read a pdf file using a servlet...but my issue is that my pdf files are on a remote Sun solaris server (intranet) and my servlet will be in a public network (internet), so my question is, still be possible to use this solution to read my remote file ? how i can access the remote file ??
    any idea from where I can start ??
    best regards,
    carlos.

    You may use a FTP client component to connect with your servlet to the Sun server, retrieve the bytes and serve them to the browser. Instead of reading the stream from a local file, you will be reading from a network socket, but the code -if well written and designed- may be very similar.
    There are many good ftp client components for java, you may also use other protocols like HTTP or SCP (ssh file transfer).

  • Chat between j2me clients and using a Servlet server

    Java gurus, please help me..
    I'm wondering if I could set up a sort of chat functionality between two j2me clients. I wish to use Java servlets as my server and Tomcat to deploy it. Is this possible? Can i do these by using http connection only or do i have to use sockets? If i use sockets, how will i configure Tomcat, or do i still need Tomcat?
    Hope someone could help! Thanks in advance! =)

    Basically it means you should have a Thread that loops and make an http request every x seconds. Before sending the request it should check if the user has typed anything, and send that with the request. The server should keep track of all the chat messages sent, and forward to all the other clients when they request an update. To keep track of what clients have received what messages, you could have a time stamp for each message, and a "last update" field for each client.
    The client should run something like this in a thread:
    while (iAmRunning) {
      url = "......." // address of your server
      if (the user typed anything since the last time we sent a request) {
        url = url + "?msg=" + whatTheUserTyped; // maybe another parameter for private messages?
        reset what the user typed (so it won't be sent next time);
      send the request;
      get the response containing what the rest of the users have
        typed since my last update;
      update the display with the latest messages;
    }And the server would handle a request like:
    if (the request contains a message) {
      save the message with the current time;
    check when was the previous update for this user;
    get all messages where the timestamp is later than the last update;
    set the last update field for the user with to the current time;
    respond with all the messages;

  • Long running reports using java servlets

    Hello,
    I'm running into a problem using java servlets to produce database reports and sending them back to the client browser as excel or html. The problem comes into play when the user has submitted two reports then goes to run a third and the browser hangs. I realized now that this is because of the two active connections that the user already has to the app server. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get around this? I'm trying to now write the report to the server, and provide the browser with a url, but it seams as though the connection isn't totally closed even though I close the response printwriter.... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

    Unfortunately I dont have an answer to your question, but:
    If the reports are large/long running, should they be generated on demand? You could schedule the reports to be generated every day, month or whenever appropriate, stored on the server and then quickly pulled by the user whenever needed.

  • Can i use a servlet for as a

    the SDN,
    I need to create a middleware server that reads requests from a database then forwards these requests to the "real" servers. The reason i referred to the app as a "middleware SERVER" is because this app will be started once and will run forever, (if no problems come up), but actually the "middleware server" that i need to create will be a "client" to the "real servers" which will process the requests - so i shall refer to the system that i need to design as a "forwarding client" instead of "middleware server" - to avoid confusion.
    After my "Forwarding Client" reads a request from the DB it wil forward the request to the servers using XMLRPC (over http).
    I would like to know from those who know more : which is the better approach to solving this problem.
    According to me these are the closest options to designing the "Forwarding Client":
    1) create a java application that uses the "custom networking" packages of java to forward the data to the server, see packages here: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/networking/TOC.html#sockets
    2) develop the functionality of my "Forwarding Client" in a servlet. This is easier since forwarding of the data (using HTTP POST) is very easy in servlets.
    But there is a problem that could arise, and this brings out my main question:
    -> since this application will need to run for a very long time (probably perpetually) - are there any limitations of having a servlet run for a very long period of time? any memory issues or any other potential issues? What about container issues? Are servlet engines such as tomcat designed for such kinds of servlets?
    To help understand the scenario, this is an overview of the logic:
    <code>
    do
    select one unprocessed request from the DB
    process the request -by forwarding the request to the server
    receive and read the response from the server
    save the response in the DB
    while(true)
    </code>
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    I will try to answer in english for all readers (I am french). It's a very complex problem. If you want to use a servlet as a proxy it will not be "invisible" for end-user. All your calls will look like this :
    http://www.foo.com/ProxyServlet?realURL=http://www.foo.com/RealServlet
    Did you accept this kind of solution? If not, can you explain me what exactly you have to do.
    For the second question : you have to re-write all your request using HTTPURLConnection.

  • Errors when deploying application to a remote WebLogic server using Eclipse

    I'm using Eclipse with OEPE for WebLogic 10.3.5 on linux and running a weblogic server versioned the same.
    I've created a new EAR which combined several EARs that I had, and deployed it on my local server using the 'servers' tab in Eclipse. It went well.
    When I tried to deploy the EAR into my remote server, I got the exception:
    Application archive not found : myworkspace/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.core.resources/.projects/MyEAR/beadep/remote_weblogic/MyEAR/split_src.ear
    This also happens when trying to deploy the EAR to a server that runs on my computer but configured as 'remote' in Eclipse. This does not happen for any other application of mine.
    Next thing I tried is to update my Eclipse OEPE and server to 12.1.1, so I've downloaded the two, installed them both as new, and now when I'm looking for remote servers in the Eclipse, instead of writing the server status (republish/synchronized) it writes:
    User: myuser, failed to be authenticated
    I'm lost. How can I deploy my application with Eclipse OEPE to a remote weblogic server?
