WRT300N v1.0 Firmware 1.03.6 Subnet miscalculation

Attempted twice to communicate to technical support via chat feature but was horribly frustrating experiencing. They want to resolve the issue, which is understandable, but their idea of a resolution is to use the default configuration.
BUG: When attempting to use my existing subnet configuration but updating DNS server immediately after firmware update and reset, the wrt300n miscalculates the subnet 192.168.24.0/255.255.255.192. It reports the only allowable ranges are 192.168.24.1 to 192.168.24.189 and 192.168.24.191 to 192.168.24.63. At initial glance the first one looks ok except it's off by one and the second is clearly miscalculated. No, 63 is not a typo. After resetting (POR not a wipe) the device multiple times, its reproducible 100%. I have a work around, but its a bug so wanted to report it.
This setup was in use for six+ mos without issue using firmware 1.03.3 but I updated because the device stop responding to all inquires after four to eight weeks. Reset corrected but hoped the newer firmware would fix the problem. Not a DHCP lease issue since I has static configuration for several systems. Considering just reset to the manufacturer defaults but.. Anyone else able to reproduce this bug? If so, where do I report it? Thank you.

What I was trying to do was update the DNS server, however my prior configuration before flashing that worked was now being interpreted as invalid when saving.
I did have a typo above that may be confusing you. 192.168.24.128 versus 192.168.24.0 which is what I was forced to change m network setting due to the bug. So using subnet mask 255.255.255.192 we have:
network 192.168.24.128
subnet 255.255.255.192
broadcast 192.168.24.191
IP range 192.168.24.129 to 192.168.24.190
This was the configuration prior to firmware flash from 1.03.3 to 1.03.6 I was using since original purchase. After the flash update, I attempted to update the DNS server which produced the error and clearly a miscalculation of the IP address ranges. Yes, the DNS sever can be whatever but the page does a check of all fields. This would be a best practice if all fields are written. It the right thing for Linksys to do but it miscalculates the available IP range.
I am going to wipe the settings and reconfigure, but was curious if anyone else had similar problems and where we would report a bug if identified to others.

    Hi,
I am having a problem with my linksys router. When i connect from my modem>linksys router>wired/wirelesss computer, i am unable to connect to the internet, but my connection shows 100%(excellent). So, i tried to connect my wired computer directly to my modem, the internet is working perfectly!
So i tried to reset the router, by holding the reset button for 30seconds. and then re-config my router setting.  Finally, the internet is working. But when i wake up the next day, and tried to switch on the internet, the router can't work again.
SO i reset it again. It worked. But failed during the next few hours/days.
PLEASE Help me!  I do not always wish to reset my router again and again. i will really appreciate your HELP????

Reduce the MTU value to 1300 and click on save settings on the setup page of the router and check.

  • New to the WRT300N - Firmware & help needed

Hi. First off, I apologize that this is going to be very long.  I really hope someone will take the time to read it all and give me some help.
I posted about a week ago about problems with my WRT54GS.  All of a sudden with no changes, the wireless stopped working.  I tried for a few days to fix it with no luck.  I decided to order the WRT300N (I figured if I was going to buy a new one, I'd upgrade and this is the one that Linksys recommended).
I should mention that after ordering the new router, the wireless on the old one started working again but it wasn't working normal.  The signal quality had always pretty much been excellent and now it started going up & down but at least it was staying connected.
The new router came today.  I disconnected the old one and connected the new one and everything went smoothly.  Both my wired & wireless computers worked great.  Less than an hour later, the wireless disconnected.  I went to view available networks and my network (I use our last name) was gone.  I shut off the laptop and it still didn't see the network.  So I started looking at the router settings just to be sure that nothing had changed.  About 15 minutes later, the laptop found the network and connected again.  The signal quality dropped to good and has stayed there ever since.
Just for information, when the laptop is on the desk (which it is 90% of the time), it's only about 5 feet away from the router.  I have not tried to take the laptop out of the room yet.  Also more information if it helps.  I have a large "U" shaped desk.  My monitor for my desktop sits in the middle.  On either side are the speakers.  To my left (in front of me) is a UPS (plugged into this UPS is the tower, monitor, speakers, cradle for my mouse, modem & router), then the tower (I can't put it on the floor because I have physical issues that would prevent me from accessing it there).  Now if I turn my chair to the left, the desk has an upper level.  This is where my DSL modem & the router are.  They are on the end near where the computer is on the lower level.  This is the same setup we were using before.  Old router worked great for almost 2 years with signal strength at excellant on the laptop.  It just started acting up all of a sudden.  If I go back to facing center and then turn to the right, that's where my husband's laptop sits.  The only other equipment there is a calculator and a lamp and on the floor is another UPS which has his laptop (which has an Intel wireless G card in it), a laser printer, and the above mentioned calculator & lamp plugged in.
Prior to today, I had the Logitech MX3100 keyboard & mouse set.  I had purchased a new mouse (Logitech MX Revolution).  So I was using the keyboard from the MX3100 with the new mouse and everything was fine running that way for weeks before the problem kicked in.  So I don't think it's got anything to do with the mouse.  Today's setup is a little different.  I am no longer using the MX3100 keyboard.  I am using Logitech DiNovo Edge, which uses a bluetooth dongle.  I also don't think it's any interference from this keyboard since this is a pre-existing problem.
I do have a cordless phone in the room (it's on the left hand side of the desk from where I sit at the opposite end from the modem & router...also it's one of those that doesn't need a phone line)but it's a 5.8 ghz.
The old router had the option to change the channel, etc.  This one has auto for standard channel & wide channel & there's no way to change it that I can see.  Radio band is also set to auto but does have 2 choices under it (standard & wide).  As I said before, I use our last name for our SSID.  It's the same one I've been using for years.  There is no one else around here with that SSID.  Network mode is mixed.
Concerning the firmware....the information for mine is WRT300N V1.1 firmware v1.51.2.  I tried to look for an update but the only one in the list is the WRT300N V1.0.  I did click on that but the firmware version is lower and I don't want to screw anything up.  Is there a firmware update for me or not?  If so, please point me in the right direction as I can't find it.
Concerning the signal strength....would it help to buy a new wireless card for the laptop?  The Intel card has been updated with the newest software.  The card is internal and to my knowledge can only be replaced with the same card or a bluetooth card.  (Computer is a Dell XPS M140.)  I do have a card slot but I'm confused because I think Dell called it an Express Card slot and I don't know whether or not the Linksys notebook card that is recommended for this router would work in this slot.  If the card would work, is it worth the expense?
What else can I try.  I thought about moving the router furthur to the left but it would require moving a few other items and I'm not sure if the cords are long enough.  Would it help if the router & modem were not plugged into the same UPS?  I do have a regular surge protecter near where my phone is.  I would really rather leave them plugged into the UPS though for obvious reasons.
Also if it helps, I have the router on it's side with the 2 antennas on the end pointing straight up and the flat one in the middle I have angled this way.
I hope I have given enough information for some suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

Thanks for the response.  I was wondering if anyone would take the time to read such a long post.  I wanted to be sure to try to give as much information as possible.
My desktop (Dell XPS400) tower is made out of metal...but the router is actually not sitting on it.  There is a shelf to the left of my tower (when I'm facing it, otherwise it's to the right of it).  That's where the modem & router sit.  The shelf sits about 3" over from the edge of the computer and it's about 7" above it.
As far as the wireless card for my husband's laptop...I'm still thinking about it.  I'm wondering if there would be any improvement in speed or the quality of the connection with the N card.
Now I just went into the router's settings and tried to make the changes you suggested.  I was able to change  the radio band from auto to wide BUT once I do that, I loose the ability to leave the wide channel & standard channels on auto.  The options for the wide channel are 3-9 and the standard are 1 & 5.  I don't know which ones are best to pick so for now I'm not changing anything.  I didn't change the advanced settings either as I wasn't sure if I could do that without changing the other settings first.
My husband has noted that he does see the quality of the connection occasionally jump to excellant.  For the most part it's staying on good in here.  We haven't brought it out into the living room yet to see what it does out there.  He hasn't needed to.  He has had it disconnect on him a couple of times as well.
I did forgot to mention in that book I wrote that we do live in an apartment building.  We are on the 1st floor in the back of the building.  Our office is between our living room & another bedroom.  There is an apartment above us.  There is another apartment on the other side of the other bedroom.  Our bathroom is across the hall from this room, other side of that is the kitchen and then there is an apartment in the front of the building.  Our front door is off the living room, a hallway seperates our apartment from another one.  There are 4 apartments on each floor.  Laundry (directly under us) & storage in basement.
I give all these details to try to get the best help.  I don't know if all this extra info is helpful or not.  We have been using Linksys routers for quite a few years now.  This is our 3rd one and our 2nd wireless one.  We have been in this apartment for a year now and had no trouble until a few weeks ago.  Previously lived in another apartment of the same floor plan in the same complex but on the 3rd floor (boy did we hate walking up those stairs!) with no trouble.
Looking forward to hearing back from  you so I can try to make the changes you suggested.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

  • WET54G does not seem to make WRT300N signal better

    Greetings,
A friend of mine is using a WRT300N, firmware v0.93.3, as his router for both wireless and wired connections. The signal does not reach the other side of his house for whatever reason. The router is less than 25 feet from the other side of the house but the signal does not reach, so he purchased a WET54G. I set it up for him, while it was hardwired to one of the computers, then I unplugged it and moved it about 15 feet or so away from the WRT300N and kept it wireless. It does not seem to make the signal any better at the other side of the house. I went into the WET54G's settings and performed the Site Survey, selected the WRT300N's SSID and everything seemed to connect just fine. Is there anything else to this? What else could I try to make this signal better? I feel that there is probably some obstacles in the way of the signal, like an electrical breaker room and an air conditioning unit, as well as some dry wall, but I didn't think that would make a big deal. Anyway, here is some pertinent information about the devices, maybe my settings are just not right. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also any recommendations on antenna's would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance.
    WET54G:
    SSID: home
    Network Type: Infrastructure
Security is Enabled and set to WPA Pre-Shared, TKIP, same password as WRT300N
    Device Ip: 192.168.0.109
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.0.10
    Transmission Rate: Auto
    Authentication Type: Open
    Threshold: 2347
    Frag Threshold: 2346
    Cloning Mode: Disabled
    WRT300N:
    SSID:home
    Network Mode: Mixed (Which N,B, & G)
    Radio Band: Wide-40Mhz Channel
    Wide channel: 3
    Standard Channel: 5 - 2.432GHZ
    SSID Broadcast: Enabled
Wireless Security: PSK Personal, TKIP, same pass as WET54G
    Mac Filter is Disabled
    Device Ip: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Start Ip: 192.168.0.100
    Maxium Number of Users: 10
Also, when I go to DHCP Reservation, which I am not using, I do not see the WET54G, but the desktop and the four labtops are listed.
All the settings on the WRT300N, under  Advance Wireless Settings are all default.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Message Edited by MeGGa on 04-21-200705:44 PM

I am a little confused by your post.  Are you using the WET to receive a wireless connection from the WRT300N, or are you trying to use the WET to retransmit the wireless signal, and thereby increase your wireless range?   The WET is designed only to receive a signal, then pass it along an ethernet wire to the computer's ethernet port.
The WET54G is set to an improper fixed LAN IP address.  Fixed (static) LAN IP addresses must be OUTSIDE the DHCP server range.  Your DHCP server range is 192.168.0.100  thru 192.168.0.109.    I would suggest you set your WET to 192.168.0.226  (similar to its default), unless you have another device at that address.  At least get it out of your DHCP server range.   Because 192.168.0.226 is automatically recognized as a fixed LAN IP address, you do not need to make a "DHCP Reservation" for it.    Additionally, the gateway on the WET should be the same as the WRT300N's address, 192.168.0.1
I'm not sure why you are getting such a poor wireless range.  However, there is no reason to expect the WET54G to have any more range than an ordinary wireless g card, unless you have put a high gain antena on it, like the HGA7S.
Your WRT300N would be expected to have its best range if the computer that you were connecting to used a Linksys wireless N adapter.
Also, make sure your WRT300N is properly located.  Try to minimize the obstructions between the router and computer.  Make sure the router is placed in an open area, and several feet up off the floor.   Do not place it behind your computer monitor, or with other obstructions around it.  The antennas should be verticle.  I am not sure of how to position that square antenna - perhaps twisting it to the right or left might help.
Make sure the WRT300N has a unique SSID.  Do not use "linksys".  Do not use any SSID that your neighbors are using.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, Bluetooth (including Bluetooth game controllers), microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, and your neighbor's wireless network. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, you might want to try separating your own channels.  I see you are using 3 and 5.   Maybe further apart would help.
    Hope this helps.

  • WRT300N & WRE54G & WGA54G Need Help please

Well I have the WRT300N finally working on the home network with 11 device running. I added a WRE54G so my brother at his home from 600 feet away can surf the Net. I purchase a WGA54G so my Nephew can use his Xbox to play his Cousins on our network BUT He can seem to link up he can see our network starting then dropping off.
I know the WGA54G works fine I tested it in our house before moving it to his home. Is there some settings on the WRE54G to allow the WGA54G to get picked up and relayed ? The WGA54G is only 30 feet away from the WRE54G and yes there is no 2.4 telephones in the house. His laptop never loses signal going thru the WRE54G but that seems to be the only problem for the WGA54G going thru WRE54G
Anybody have a view on this ?

Thank you LOL I guess that would help

The WGA54G was working fine thru my house but when I take it next door so it goes thru the WRE54G I can see our network come and go , so I figure it must be signal loss so I ran a Cat 5 wire to the WRE54G and sat the WGA54G next to it and the signal still is up and down.  My brother has no Cordless house phones to interfer and the nearest nieghbor is 400 feet away.
Now my house is 600 feet away line of site and his lap top never looses signal going thru the WRE54G the Blue light is always solid
I pinged the WRE54G and it has an avg of "2ms "
I hope this new info can help.

  • WRT300N connection drops daily

    I have a WRT300N V1 running Firmware version 1.03.06
I also have a Dell Inspiron E1705 with Vista Ultimate and the Dell Wireless 1500 Draft N card. All updates from Dell and Microsoft are loaded.
Approximately once each day, I lose the connection to the router for about 10 to 30 minutes.  The router does not appear in the list of available wireless servers under connect to a network in Vista.  It may or may not appera int the Dell DLAN untility under available server.  I also tried to use my cell phone (AT&T 8525 PDA phone with 802.11 and I didn't see the server router there either even if I am within a foot of the router.  Eventually, the connection restores itself and everything works again.
I've removed and reinstalled the 1500 software (last update was dated 3/26/2007) a few times.  rebooting the PC doesn't help.
    Any insights?

  • Blocking P2P applications on WRT300N (V1)

Hello, I am currently using a WRT300n V1 with firmware version 1.03.6. Having trouble with my room mate downloading a hell lot of stuff using bittorrent. I talked to him but he refuse to stop. I play an online game and i am getting 1000+ ping which makes it impossible to play. I tried a lot of things, including Access restrictions etc. They don't seem to work. I am using the wireless, while he is connected to port 1. I tried lowering the qos on port1 to low. Nothing seems to work. Is it something wrong with the firmware? Any help would be appreciated. Last option is to get a new connection for myself.

Flat out doesn't work.  It's an all or nothing affair.  Either you block complete internet access between the hours noted or all days, or it's complete access to everything.  The router cannot block specific ports even though it claims it can.

  • WRT300N, dropping connection speeds, losing wireless all together

I have a WRT300N with updated firmware (v.1.03.3) and have tried the magic beacon interval and RTS/Frag. Threshold tricks and I am still randomly losing wireless all together. Any suggestions please????

Try changing the channels... Set the radioband to standard instead of wide... and set the standard channel to 11...

  • WRT300N Printer Problem

I just upgraded my router to the WRT300N, checked the firmware and there was none (version 2). Added the HP C6180 Photo All in One printer wireless to the network with no problem before, added to the new network and alls fine until i added other computers. PC - (Wired to router) Can connect to the network, see internet and printer no problem Sis PC - (Wired to router) Can connect to the network, see internet and printer no problem Laptop - (Wireless) Can connect to the network, see internet but no printer Office PC - (Wirless) Can connect to the network, see internet but no printer Any idea why the router will not allow the wireless ones to see the printer? Cheers for your time, James

If "AP isolation" is turned on in the router, it will block any wireless-to-wireless connection.  So, make sure "AP isolation" is set to "disabled".

  • WRT54G / upgraded firmware, unable to access across subnets

    Hi,
I have a network with 10 WRT54G (v6) 's.  Recently I upgraded the firmware on two units from 1.00.7 to the latest 1.02.2 and am experiencing some network wierdness.
The wireless routers are connected via the LAN port to a linux router which is a firewall/bridge between subnets 10.1.3.x & 10.1.1.x.  I have rules in place to allow my workstation to http to the 10 routers and disallow everything else.  All of this is logged.
I cannot from my workstation (10.1.1.x) access the web interface on the two units I upgraded the firmware on 10.1.3.x).  I can still access the web interface on the remaining units (10.1.3.x)
I can however access the web interface from the same subnet to the newly upgraded units.
I can see from the firewall log that the packet is making it out correctly and tcpdump verifies this.
Does anybody have a clue what is going on.  I feel like it would be best to return to the previous firmware, but where do I find it???
    Thanks,
    Lee

    Hi Lee,
logon to ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/ and download the previous firmware version and try downgrading the firmware...

  • WRT300n V1.0 - where is current firmware on web site??

I have a WRT300n V1 (not V1.1), and the support/download section dropdown for the WRT300n only lists V1.1 and V2 (no V1.0 or V1).  The release notes for the V1.1 download caution this is for V1.1 HW *only*, and Wikipedia entry for V1.0 HW says the HW is truly different (different broadcom chipset, etc.)
Can anybody tell me where the V1 (V1.0) firmware is located?  Don't want to turn my router into a brick...
    Thanks!

I was able to download and install sucessfully firmware v1.2 for the WRT300 v1 router.  It is a long URL

If that link doesn't work as I hoped, use URL which ends with 01:

  • Corrupt Firmware on wrt300n

I had a power disruption when loading firmware and now I cannot ping 192.168.1.1 even after a reset.
Is there any way of hard resetting the flash on this appliance? I've found the instructions for the wrt54g on openwrt website but this one looks totally different. Is there a way to jump the flash on the wrt300n?

first off , check whether you get an ip add off the router .. if getting a valid ip add , try pinging the router ( 192.168.1.1 ) .. if able to ping the router... connect the computer to the modem and go to www.linksys.com/download and download the latest firmware for the router ... then go to ftp.linksys.com/pub/network . download the tftp.exe file .. open the file..here , the server is router's ip add , password is router's password , browse the firmware file and click upgrade ..
after the upgrade, reset and reconfigure the router ..

  • WRT300N V2 and 2.00.18 firmware

Strange, for a while WRT300N V2 2.00.18 source code is available on
the GPL code center but isn't general available as a firmware download.
    gpl source code
Did linksys forget to release this firmware? Found a post on this forum 2.00.18 firmware
where kenan66 says that this firmware is only available when contacting
linksys support directly. What's up with that, where are they waiting for?
Hopefully this 2.00.18 will solve these intermittent dropouts when used
with a wmp300n. Very annoying, tried every setting and found out that without
the linksys connection app the connection is much more stable. I now use the
windows XP wireless connection utils to connect. But even with all the M$ WPA/Wifi
fixpacks installed there are intermittent dropouts, but fewer.
Please linksys, those wrt300n users out there need some after support!

k tried every driver out there for the Atheros AR5008. Results are
linksys(install cd),6.0.0.160,fails frequently, had to cold boot system to activate wireless again.
Artheros,6.0.0.197,fails frequently, had to cold boot system to activate wireless again.
Belkin,6.0.1.4,fails less frequently, had to cold boot system to activate wireless again.
Artheros,6.0.2.75,WHQL signed !, freezes so now and fails frequently, had to cold boot system to activate wireless again.
Linksys,6.0.2.9,Also known as STA_WMP300N_EU_1.0.0.15_20061016, fails frequently, had to cold boot system to activate wireless again.
I prefer the belkin ar5416.sys now over the others, but imho I think there is a serious flaw in the driver or hardware. It could be my pci card failing but reading the stories here I still have to find one who haven't had any issues with it.
And I see there is now a new chipset on the market the ar5008x, is this
a new design solving te issues the ar5008 had ?
Lot's of conjecture but i think it's time to send the wmp300n back to where it belongs, on the shelves @ linksys :-)

  • WRT300N - we need to use Subnet 255.255.252.0 for our network

We bought a WRT350N and two WRT300N's recently and are excited about the speed increase over 802.11g as well as the range improvements.  However, in configuring them we have found we can't put in our subnet 255.255.252.0.  Is there a way to add a subnet to the dropdown?  If not, are we going to have to return these and go with a different brand's Wireless-N?  We are not wanting to setup our few Wireless devices on DHCP through the WRT3xxN's.  Are these routers just not supposed to be used on a W2K Domain?

Hi...this is a router limitation....works on "class C" subnets only
