WRT54G + SpeedStream 5100 Connection Issues

I have a WRT54G, which I used at school in NY for about 4 months with no issues. When I brought it home, I hooked it up to our DSL modem. The current setup is a cord from the wall to the modem, modem to router, and router to computer.
We have one desktop comp that is wired directly to the router (as just mentioned), and 2 wireless laptops, only one of which is used on a regular basis. All three computers are Macs. As soon as I set this all up, the internet connection began to drop (seemingly) randomly. All computers will lose access to the internet, and the only way to regain access is by power cycling everything. Through a week or so of observation, these are the causes for connection failure that I can come up with, although I'm not sure if they are the only ones, or if I am correct in my assuptions.
1) iChat - any use at all, but especially video chatting, will immediately cause the connection to drop. Skype, however, works for video chatting. This problem doesn't bug me so much because Skype works, plus I read that iChat doesnt support linksys routers. So whatever.
2)If the desktop computer is turned on while the laptop is running, both will lose connection. If the desktop is turned on first, however, both work fine. This caused me to wonder if the desktop somehow got set up with a static IP address that the laptop was taking if it got booted up first, but I cannot imagine how that would have happened, nor do I see any indication that it has happened.
I feel like there used to be a lot more random connection dropping, but that seems to have cleared up and these are the only things I can find that consistently cause connection to drop. When the connection drops, it is for all computers.
I called Tech support and Linksys had me change the MTU and a couple other things, which helped for a while, but not permanently. Then when it kept happening they told me to get a new router, but this one does seem to work fine, except for the above circumstances.
whew, sorry that was soooo long

Bump. I'm really desperate here, I have to power cycle my router/modem/computer at least 2 or 3 times a day, sometimes as many as 10. I've tried talking to linksys - they had me change the MTU and a couple other settings, update the firmware, and change the channel. I cannot figure out for the life of me what the deal is here. It is especially bad this morning, has already dropped on me 3x. Any thoughts?

  • WRT54G no internet connection issue

    Hi,
I've been using a WRT54G router for a few years and it's worked fine until now.  I recently installed AVG8.5 on to my computer and now the router can't find the internet connection.  I have my compture wired to it.
I hooked the mode directly up to my computer to make sure the modem wasn't the issue and it worked fine.  I checked to make sure the local settings were on autodect and the lights on the router are all lit correctly.  I have uninstalled AVG8.5 and the router still keeps saying that it cannot detect an internet connection.  I've tried reseting the router and reinstalling the software, but no dice.
I did manage to get it to broadcast its SSID, but when I tried to connect wireless it won't allow anything to connect to it.  So, I'm assuming something is blocking it on my machine.  Any advice?  Thanks!

After resetting the router I assume the router is not properly confiured and that's the reason you have lost the Internet connection on all the computers...
You should leave the AVG8.5 un-installed and re-configure your router...

  • WRT54GS Ver 6 - Connectivity Issues.

I purchased this WRT54GS about a month ago, and got it working. Everything worked fine, then this morning I started having issues. My Internet keeps 'locking up' to a certain point. When it happens:
-I lose the ability to go to any web page
-My online game I play connects fine, and works normally - but then it crashes when I try to go to a new Zone
-Internet applications (Anti Virus, Spybot) can't connect to update - they don't 'see' the internet
Yet - my VOIP continues to work normally. However, to use any other Internet functionality, I have to use Ipconfig /release and /renew.
I have bypassed the Linksys router, and connected directly to the Cable Modem - and the problem vanishes. I tried updating the Firmware, no change.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this?
*Edit = I've checked out all the configuration options I can, and checked out every FAQ I could find. I hope someone reads this soon who can offer some advice.

"Frunple" is right.Your problem is not unique and has been experienced by many customers who bought version 5 and 6 of this router. I was one of them who had 3 or more random disconnects a day for over 2 months. Linksys tech support tried very hard to correct this with many different reconfigurations but nothing helped. Exchanging the orignal router to two more version 6 routers also did not cure the problem. Only when I changed the router to a WRT54GL did the problem stop instantly.
The reason is that the WRT54GL is really a resurrected WRT54G version 4 which was based on a different design. Starting with version 5 and 6 Linksys changed the RAM from 16 MB to 8 MB and the Flash Memory from 4 MB to 2 MB. They also changed the operating system to "VxWorks". Something is very wrong in this design.
If you want to cure the problem then try to replace your router with a version 4 or earlier or get a WRT54GL which is really a "WRT54G version 4" with a new name.
Since I did change I have now not had any disconnects for one month.

  • WRT54G Router - Internet connection issues using the Ipod touch

Ok, first - here is my setup. I've got the router hooked into the modem, with the desktop computer hooked directly into the router.  I've got my laptop running off wireless internet, and I've got an ethernet cable connecting through my laptop to an xbox for xbox live connection.  I recently just got an iPod touch, and I've come to realize that whenever I'm on the iPod, it messes with the internet on the desktop computer and on the xbox, but not the laptop really.. it makes the internet really slow, or sometimes it doesn't work at all, especially on the xbox.  Is there anything I can change to make these all work at the same time?  Or is this too many connections or what? Please help. thanx.
(running windows vista home premium, WRT54G router, pretty much beginner status, though I can follow directions easily : ] )
Also, the internet always works on the ipod, it seems as though the ipod is 'taking over' the internet.. it doesn't lose it while in the area, yet the other computers and xbox does at times..

You might be facing the problem, because the Ipod and your Desktop computer must be having the same IP address thats the reason whenever your IPod is connected to your Network, your Desktop must be getting disconnected. Check the IP address of your IPOD and of your Desktop Computer.
First thing which you need to check, if the Physical connections are done properly. Connect the Modem to the Internet Port of the Linksys Router and then Connect the computer to the LAN Port No.1. On your Desktop computer login to the setup page of your Router and click on the Status tab and check "Internet IP address"
If required you can Re-Set your Router and Re-configure all the settings on your Router from the scratch.

  • Linksys WRT54G and G4 connection issues

could not get my Apple IBook G4 to connect to my router by lan cable or by the Airport wirless on the Apple. The router had the original firmware on it dated from about summer 2006. I upgraded to latest firmware for router v1.02.02 dated summer 2007. Works like a charm now.
    Hope this helps someone else.

    Oh, the WRT54G is version 6.>> WRT54G v6

  • WRT54GS Ver 6 connection issues

Does anyone know what would be causing my router to loose connection every week? I've done whatever was suggested in the forums here and still every week I have to do a hard reset to get the router back online. When this issue occurs I'm unable to log into the router's admin page, yet I can ping the router from all my PC's. This is the 2nd Linksys router that's I've gone through and both had the latest firmware. I'm thinking of moving to DLink or Netgear. Thoughts?

As you are loosing connection every week ....it seems that routers software is not working properly ........ download the latest firmware from http://linksys.com/download ...... after upgrade reset the router for 20-30 seconds .....
check if it is showing same problem.....

  • WRT54G and WET610N Connection Issues

I posted this in the wireless routers section of this forum and got zero feedback, so I guess I'll repost here.
I just bought a WET610N wireless bridge so that I could connect my Samsung Blu-Ray player up to it.
I'm only able to get it to connect to my WRT54G router (Version 5) when I have all security disabled.
I haven't changed much in the router settings from default other than SSID, enabled WPA Personal TKIP encryption, using channel 4, and limited the number of DHCP connections to 15 (192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.114).  I haven't added any access restrictions, DMZ, QoS, etc.  I don't have MAC address filtering enabled, either.  I have also changed the Beacon Interval to 75 and changed the Fragmentation Threshold and RTS Threshold to 2304.
I have updated my WRT54G router to the latest firmware, too, by the way.
How is it possible that security has to be disabled for this bridge to connect to the router?

Okay, I finally got this thing to work with WPA Personal, TKIP security encryption.
The problem is that you cannot have spaces in your passphrase.  As soon as I took the spaces out everything worked like a champ.
Hopefully this closes the feedback loop for some other poor sap in the future and they don't have to do all the troubleshooting I did.
I really appreciate everyone's help on this forum.

  • WRT54G v6.0 connection issues

If I connect everything the way the setup CD explains, I get no internet connection.  However, if I move the incoming internet wire from the 'INTERNET' port on the WRT to a '#' port, everything works fine, except I cannot create a wireless network with other computers in the house.
    Any suggestions?
If I need to explain further/ in more detail, please ask me to do so, I am so frustrated with this I can't put it into words.
I also beleive my DSL modem is also a router, which in my mind, could also be causing a problem.
Message Edited by DaBo on 10-25-2007 07:32 PM

You need to reset the Linksys router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, then power down your entire system.  Connect the ethernet port of your 5200 to the Internet port of the WRT54G.  Leave one computer connected by wire to a LAN port on the WRT54G.  Power up your 5200 and allow it to fully boot.  Power up your WRT54G and allow it to fully boot.  Power up your computer.  Now, test your Internet connection, it should work.  If not, repeat the "ipconfig" test, except use "ipconfig /all" and post the results.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • WRT54G weird wireless connection issues

    Hi
I have recently encountered a problem with my wireless setup.
I have WRT54G ver 7 router. I am using it with my wired PC and wireless Dell D620 with Intel PRO Wireless 3945ABG adapter.
Both the router and laptop are less then a year old (I bouth them about at the same time). And worked well more or less for all this time.
My settings are : WEP2 personal with AES.
Yesterday however the wireless connection was lost and I couldn't connect anymore. I haven't changed any network settings or got any new devices. The wired connection works the same way, without a problem.
I tried reseting the router and changing its channels to (1/11)its settins to :
    Transmission Rate: 54 Mbps
    Beacon Interval: 50
    Fragmentation Threshold: 2306
    RTS Threshold: 2304
I tried also getting the latest firmware upgrade for the router, however didn't find any available.
The situation is weird because sometimes I can connect to it, and sometimes not. It also gets lost after a few minutes but still shows that I am connected.
Today the situation became even worst. I did restart this morning and I can't see the network anymore (there are other networks nearby I can see them, but mine is not visible (although the Wireless SSID Broadcast is enabled and yesterday it worked !) I can however connect to it somehow with my prevously saved profile, but it also gets lost after some time.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Yes it is possible.
Anyway today I tried to update intel drivers and the app just hang when it tried to remove the old version. So I terminated it, now however the patch doesn't install and I can't install/repare/remove old version of drivers some how . Currently I am using only windows to manage wi-fi.
I had already made a unique SSID and broadcast is also on. I also doesn't have any wireless devices and the router is though close to the computer still I think is fairly far from it and is about 1.5 m heigh from the ground.
I did a little research on the network with utility called "Network stumbler".
I can usually find 5 different networks including mine:
2 of them are using channel 6 the other ones are using channels 1 and 2 . So I have set channel 11 ( I have tried it before and others too without much of a luck )
Anyway the program shows the current parameters for my network:
    SNR = 43
    Signal+ = -57
    Noise- = -100
    SNR+ = 43
    Signal = -57
To compare with the other most strongest network somwhere nearby on channel 6:
    SNR = 35
    Signal+ = -62
    Noise- = -100
    SNR+ = 38
    Signal = -70
I am not sure what to do with intel drivers. I have already spent quite some time and don't want to spend more time trying to fix software problems.

  • WRT54G V2.0 Connection Issues

After resetting the router to connect a new network.  I connect the hardware step by step.  I run set up with the software provided by the manufacture.  All lights read normally.  Wireless devices will connect.  But software will not connect the router to the internet.  No wired PC can connect.  If anybody can help me figure this out I'd appreciated it.

Check the physical connection first...Modem should be connected to the router on internet port and computer to the ethernet port on the router. Now,Check the light status on the router...Power light should be solid and there should be a wlan, ethernet and internet light on the router.
Now,Check the IP Address on the computer which is connected to the router...Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt......In the Command Prompt window type ipconfig and press 'Enter'...Look for Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection IP Address , Subnet Mask and Default Gateway...
IP Address should be 192.168.1.x, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (assuming your router is 192.168.1.1)...
If you get the above mentioned IP Address, Subnet and Gateway Address then you should ping the Gateway, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...If it gives you request timed out then disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer...
If you get 4 replies then type ping 4.2.2.2 and press Enter, if you get request timed out, then you need to upgrade your router's firmware...If you get 4 replies then type ping yahoo.com and press Enter...If you get replies for Yahoo then you should get the Internet after adjusting the browser settings...
Adjusting Browser Settings : Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...

  • WRT54G v.5/Speedstream 5100 problem

I continue losing my internet connection every few days when I have my Speedstream 5100 modem connected to my WRT54G v.5 router. I talked to tech support and they said my computer was not communicating with my router and that their modem was not the issue. So if I remove my router and run just the modem(after resetting) I get my connection back. Once I set the modem in bridge mode and then turn the computer, modem, and router off and then restart I can get an internet connection again with the router connected. This connection usually only lasts a few day, but can last up to a week. I've updated the firmware and talked to Linksys tech support, but I still don't have a solution. Any help?

try changing the MTU settings to 1396 and ensure that the "Keep Alive" option is selected...

    Thanks!

    rick,
Still having problems with my imac g4.
I called tech support today and I told them about all the problems that I was having. He had me put the current operating system disk that I was currently running on my computer and he had me run the utility file and nothing found.
Then he had me run the operating system disk that came with the computer but my computer froze up and I could not run it. He told me to take it in for service and that it was a hardware problem. After I hung up with the tech the computer started up and I ran the operating system disk and it said no problems with the hardware.
While the computer was still running,I got on the internet to go to the site that you listed above because I wanted to print a copy of the site to take with me tomorrow.
My computer froze up with 18 repeated lines of errors.
I will be taking it in for services tomorrow.

  • WRT54GS V7 loses connection

My WRT54GS loses its connection periodically, requiring a reboot to get it functioning. Further, it reliably locks up while I play Starcraft 2, booting me from the game due to a connection timeout with clockwork regularity. In these cases, the router will eventually come back online on its own, but does so faster if I reboot it.
The router has the newest firmware. What could be the problem? How can I test to determine the issue?
    Thank you!

Have you changed the settings on your router as i have mentioned in the earlier post?
Since there is no change, you can try to download the firmware from the linksys website and update your router.
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in search tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop
    Firmware Upgrade/Reflash
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Too many wireless-g networks in my neighborhood - connectivity issues???

I have a WRT54G (V.2) wireless router with the latest firmware and a couple of PC (XP) on a wireless-G network.  I can see a variety of other wireless-g networks in my neighborhood all within signal range.  Any where from 8-10 of them...
I have changed channels so that I am not on or near most of the other networks, but with that many it is impossible to find a unique channel and I know they overlap some what.
I seem to have on and off connectivity issues with a PC about 30-40' away in another room.  It works for 5 or so minutes and then disconnects, reconnects to the wireless network and it works again for a little bit.
No changes have been made to the equipment over the last year.  All I can contribute it to is the additional wireless networks within range now.
Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to better the connectivity?  I see Wireless-N(draft) out, but from all the reviews it does seem to work any better than wireless-g.
What about the db 7 gain antenna over the db 5 the adapters come with?

Thanks for the input.  The network SSID is unique and I am running WPA encryption.  I cannot say what kind of phone systems the neighbors has, but my wireless phone system is at 5.8 Ghz.
The PC does not switch to other systems, just losses connection, then you right click and select repair and it reconnects.  Sometimes it reconnects by itself if you are patient enough to wait for it...

  • HP PhotoSmart 7510 suddenly has severe connectivity issues

I have a HP PhotoSmart 7510 printer since about 2 months. Initial setup worked like a charm and the printer has been working pretty much perfectly for the last 2 months. Wireless printing, scanning and internet access on the printer (e.g. for Facebook photos) all worked. Just from time to time i would get the occasional (mildly annoying) message on my computer saying "scan to computer is currently unavailable" but it usually worked itself out and whenever I needed it to work, it did work.
But since a few days ago, it has some severe connectivity issues. I didn't change any settings on the printer, router or computer - the issues just started appearing by themselves. I startet getting much more frequent messages on my computer saying "scan to computer is currently unavailable". I noticed I couldn't print anymore, and restarting computer, printer and/or router didn't help at all. The only thing so far i managed to print wirelessly since the problems started were the first 5 pixel rows of an image I tried to print, the rest didn't transmit.
It seems the printer still connects to the WLAN but printing and scanning no longer work, and whenever I try to access a web service on the printer (like Facebook) it says it has no internet connection, even though the WLAN light is lit up (not blinking) and all the wireless status reports say "congratulations, no problems found" and display IPs etc. just like normal.
I looked at the threads "PhotoSmart 7510 connects to router, but not to the web.", "Wireless printer (HP Photosmart 7510) not connecting to network" and "Photosmart 7510 won't connect to Web Services" but they weren't a big help. Activating EWS didn't work because even though the printer showed its IP address to be 192.168.1.3, when I entered this in my web browser it didn't find the printers configuration page.
I tried the following steps from one of the threads:
    1. Restore the Network defaults
    2. Unplug the printers power cord while it is still on. Leave it unplugged and walk to the router.
    3. While the router is still on, unplug the power cord from the router, leave it unplugged for 30 seconds, then reconnect the power cord to the router. Once plugged back in the router should power on automatically.
    4. Plug the power cord back into the printer. Once plugged back in the printer should power on automatically.
    5. Run the Wireless Setup Wizard to reconnect the printer to your wireless network.
    6. Try enabling Web Services.
I followed these steps exactly. Interestingly, even though I had done step 1 and restored the network settings to factory defaults, after turning back on, the printer somehow still had its old settings saved and reconnected to the network.
It seemed to have fixed the problem, the printer finally had internet access again (Facebook app showed my photos) and scan to computer found my PC. But after just about 3 minutes, the printer had lost its internet connectivity again. When opening the Facebook app, it displayed the same error message it did before. And printing no longer worked as well.
So, what is wrong with this printer?! It has the newest software update by the way (I checked during the 3 minutes it had internet access.) My computer is a HP Windows 7 x64 machine (EliteBook 6930p) and the router I'm using is a Netgear WNDR3700.
I specifically bought this printer for my studies at university. In one week i have my exams and in order to study I REALLY need to be able to print some of my course materials! So any help as quickly as possible would be greatly appreciated. Or do you think this is a case for a warranty replacement, considering the printer's really strange and error-prone behavior?
    Thanks a lot!

I can assure you that it is not a router issue.  It appears to me that it is a driver compatibility with Windows OS.  After trying to get to the bottom of this since my Photosmart 7525 was new and reading just about every forum and blog, I have come to the conclusion that the issue must be related to the HP driver itself.
The issue does not seem to affect any Mac systems, and from one forum someone was able to fix it by downloading new drivers compatible with 64-bit systems (which seem to not be affected by the glitch).  But that leaves us 32-bit people stuck with the current driver which does not work.
The printer is connected with good signal to the wireless router (no matter who's router it is and what configuration is made).  The printer can be pinged from the router and any computer on the network which is not currently being affected by this issue.  However, the affected computer fails pings by either request timed out, or destination host unreachable.  Pings are successful from the affected computer to any other device on the network.  The only way to recover (at least for a few days) is to reboot the affected computer.
Also, from the display on the 7525, the network tests pass without issue.  I can also download and print content from the internet with no issues.
Please do a quick google search of this issue and you will see several THOUSAND entries of people with the same request.  This is a serious issue that people are having and everything is pointing to an HP problem (not routers, improper installation of software or drivers, etc...).  I agree with several other customers that HP should be on the hook for this fix.  I will give it another couple weeks, then back to the store for a reliable unit from another competitor (Canon, Lexmark, etc..)
Thank you in advance for escalating this issue to product engineering,
    S. Hunn
