WRT54G3GV2-VF and Merlin XU870

My Merlin XU870 (which was stated as fully HSDPA compatible with Linksys router) has the newest (7.2 MBit compatible) firmware. When I connected this modem to a laptop, I noticed that it has some sort of auto-energy-saving (?) mechanism that causes it to go down to UMTS (384 kbit) whenever connection is idle (LED goes blue). And when I start downloading something - it goes up to full speed (LED becomes yellow). At the same location (to prove it's not a range issue), modem installed into Linksys router starts always as UMTS and stays that way - even if I download something with full UMTS speed. Is there any way to make it wake up in HSDPA and keep it this way? I tried several options combinations (keeping alive, etc.) - nothing works. Linksys makes it work only in UMTS.

You can not change these settings on the router.It changes as per the Service Provider settings...So you may try to check these settings with your Service Provider...

Merlin XU870 - What software needed?

Do I need the Apple drivers, the Merlin drivers, or both?
I bought a Merlin XU870 and have been using it with Cingular. Right before I bought it, Apple came out with the update that facilitated its use. I installed it. I also installed the drivers which came with the card. When I first used the card, it completely bogged down my MBP. Everything just about ground to a halt.
So, I deleted the driver components from Apple, per the instructions found on this forum, and reinstalled the Merlin drivers.
I have had some improvement in performance, but switching between apps still very slow.
Thus the question: Do I need the apple drivers, the merlin drivers, or both?
Your input/experiences appreciated.

Adobe Reader cannot download it??? I didn't think Adobe Reader was capable of downloading anything. Again, we need to get terminology correct or I will end up getting horribly confused. Do you mean download or do you mean open?
Question: Do you have files on your computer ending in .pps and .wmv? If you click on them does Adobe Reader try to open them? If this is what you are seeing then you need:

1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more. Close the get info window.
5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
7) Close the get info window.
Of course you also have to have a suitable application on your computer which I discussed in an earlier post.

Using Novatel Merlin XU870

Hi,
I'm having some issues with Merlin XU870 express card after upgrading to Leopard. Before I upgrade to Tiger, under Network preferences, I used to be able to enter APN under the Telephone number. But now there is no Telephone Number field, only account name and password and thus it didn't connect to the internet.
Is there a work around? Can someone direct me to modifying the modem script so that it will dial to the specific APN?

I had the same problem with my Mobile Broadband ExpressCard from 3Mobile here in Australia (it's a rebranded Merlin XU870). I solved it:
1) The APN (in this case "3NetAccess") no longer goes in the telephone number field. Leopard has a place for the APN for cellular data cards. I'm not at the computer right now, but I think you'll find it in System Prefs > Network > Novatel Card > "Advanced". Choose Novatel from the device type, GSM as the network type, and you'll see a space for the APN
2) The modem script for the XU870 that's included with Leopard didn't connect to 3 Mobile Broadband for me. It may work for yours - after making the change above, try connecting before mucking around with the following. I actually had to extract Novatel's standard modem script out of their installation package (from their website), modify one part of it to look in the new Leopard APN field when it connects, and then save it into the Modem Scripts folder. If yours works without this change, that's good, leave the scripts alone. I can't remember the exact bits I changed as I'm not with the computer right now, but post a message if you still have no luck and I'll see what I can offer.
3) If your card is recognised, you connect using the new WWAN menu bar icon, not Internet Connect or other utility. It's easy and fast. The menu bar icon disappears if the card is taken out.
In any case, with Leopard's built-in WWAN drivers my connection is faster (av. 2Mbps download) and more reliable than it was under Tiger with the Novatel drivers.

Merlin XU870 HSDPA Modem Problem

I just installed a Novatel Merlin XU870 HSDPA Modem with Cingular wireless in my Intel Core 2 Duo and my pull-down icons at the top right are blinking. The icons seem to be cycling. It happens as soon as I plug the device into the ExpressCard 34 slot and stops when removed. Using Internet Connect I can connect to the internet using the card but the blinking continues.
I have uninstalled the Novatel drivers and reinstalled them - no difference. I have all of the current update from Apple.
I'm at a loss. Can someone help?

i had this problem when the update first went out. my solution was to uninstall the update and then install novatel's drivers.
recently novatel's drivers seemed to have uninstalled themselves (or at least they were not longer visible in the network system pref pane, even though the files were still in the system library) so i tried apple's solution again. still doesn't work.

WWAN Support Update 1.0 doesn't work with Merlin XU870 in Europe

I'm using the Merlin UX870 card in The Netherlands and abroad with the Vodafone network. All worked fine until I installed this update. Now the menu bar icons flash on and off when the card is inserted:

Certainly something is wrong here if you want to use this card with a different network than Cingular network... A warning would be very nice...!
Reinstalling the drivers that worked before doesn't help. I don't know what to do now...

Novatel Merlin XU870 no longer supported under WWAN?

10.7 Lion just installed, but the above seems stuck at the "initializing" stage once plugged in.
Any ways of getting round this?

Cannot get 3G to work on WRT54G3GV2-VF

Hi All,
First post so hello.
I have just taken delivery of the WRT54G3GV2 and have gone through the setup wizard. For some reason, my USB Vodafone dongle will not be detected by the router. If I plug the dongle direct into the USB port of my laptop it works great. All I get is the wizard reaches the end saying it's trying to detect the 3G but says it cannot conenct and I need to contact Vodafone. It's really odd as when I go into the router via the IP address I can click a button to connect and it even says "fair" signal but it just wont connect.
Any ideas? As I say, I know the USB dongle works great but cannot get the **bleep** router to see it. The 3G light just flashes blue.

If your data card is in the table above and is not recognized please check that you have the correct firmware on the router and that the data card firmware is up-to-date. The data card firmware version is displayed by the router on the ‘3G/UMTS’ tab on the ‘Status’ page, or by the Vodafone Mobile Connect software using the ‘Diagnostics’ command.
If your data card is not in these list then you need to talk to your Provider and get the adapter which is listed and compatible with the Router.

Linksys WRT54G3G-ST and Sony Ericsson GC89 Compability?

Is the WRT54G3G-ST compatible with the Sony Ericsson GC89 EDGE/Wireless LAN PC Card?
My Broadband Internet provider uses only this card and WRT54G3G-ST appears to solve some our problems.
I have been asking my Broadband provider to confirm if the GC89 will work with WRT54G3G, but no one has been able to confirm or deny if the card will work with the router.
The information that I have about this card shows the following drivers

Is WRT54G3GV2-ST Compatible with Sierra U598 Air Card?

I recently purchased the WRT54G3GV2-ST and the Sierra U598 Air Card from Sprint.
The Router does not even recognize the Air Card despite multiple attempts to install and configure the router. The firmware on the Linksys Router is version 1.00.14. Is there an upgrade for the firmware or any other suggestion to get the router to work with the Air Card? Should they be compatible?

This is probably inappropriate but I was dissappointed that the Linksys router was NOT compatible with the new Sprint Sierra 598 Air Card and I spent $50 on shipping (priority inbound and return). I subsequently purchased a CradlePoint 1000 Wireless router and the thing rocks. It is lightning fast and serves up a small office faster than a comparable AT&T Air Card dedicated to just one computer. Kudos to Sprint / CradlePoint for the speed. Linksys needs to play catch up.

Suggestions for express card/cingular

I'm looking for the best options for an express card/34 for macbook pro that will work with Cingular service (only available service option for offshore in the Gulf of Mexico region).
I see that Cingular will soon be offering a GT Max 3.6 express card, but specifications only list for windows operating systems?

Wireless PC cards that will work w/ MBP

Just curious to know if anbody has any luck using the PC data card with internete access for the Mac through OSX 10 or Parallel (emulating Windows) on Mac? If yes, what's the vendor name...
So far Sprint is PC-only. Verizon is questionable. I don't know of any other vendors offering a Mac compable PCExpress slot to access the internet. I can't stand Wi-Fi/Airport restriction & reliability issues. I need to have an unrestricted access to internet for remote access and other usage.

Connect Macbook/ Macbook Pro via GPRS

How is this done? I am always dismayed when traveling and PC users are connected via the PCMCIA card and GPRS. I have searched the forums and have yet to fins a definitive answer that has been tryed,tested and works!

Vodafone here in Spain do offer an ExpressCard/34 (it's a rebranded novatel Merlin XU870 I believe) so you just need to find yourself a similar card in SA. I however use a USB adapter for my 3G/EDGE/GPRS access instead as it's more flexible (it'll work with ANY Mac or PC that has USB).

Application stability after 10.5

I'm having terrible stability problems with applications since upgraded to 10.5. PowerPoint will crash 100% of the time when opening large files, Word, Mail, Photoshop and Merlin ever so often (several times a day). The same on all my Mac. I'm really surprised that Apple rushed out this software without properly testing.

How is this Apple's fault?
The programs you mention are all third-party apps.
While it's certainly in Apple's interest to maintain compatibility between OS versions as much as possible, it's hardly Apple's job to rewrite all those third party apps.
Besides, Microsoft, like all developers, have add access to pre-release Leopard code for months, so they've had plenty of time to test their code.
In the case of Microsoft, they have released an Office updater since the release of Leopard.
I don't know if it specifically addresses Leopard compatibility issues but it can't hurt.

WRT54G3G-VF + E220 not detected

Hi, everyone!
I bought WRT54G3GV2-VF as I had an Huawei E220 device. But it was a failure, when I plugged E220 into the WRT54G3GV2-VF and nothing appeared in Status or Setup for 3G/UMTS device. I get None for all Mobile network status and the 3G/UMTS card status. But the blue lamp (3G network detected) on E220 is blinking, so it is connected and network is actually detected.
Huawei E220 firmware version 11.117.09.04.00 (B268)
WRT54G3GV2-VF version 1.0 firmware 3.00.24
Mobile network is Tele2 in Latvia.
Is it somehow possible, that the WRT54G3GV2-VF supports only Vodafone supplied networks? And chances that OpenWRT or any other 3rd-party firmware will fix this?

The only ExpressCard modem I have used in my MBP is the Novatel Wireless Merlin XU870 (GPRS/EDGE/HSDPA/UMTS). In the US with AT&T Service, I find that it works best with an outdoor mounted external antenna (AT&T's 3G coverage is lousy).
