WRT54GS v7.50.5 To Tomato

I would like to upgrade to Tomato (is that even an upgrade?) Im presently running firmware v7.50.5 but when i try to install the bin file for tomato i get an error that says Upgrade Are Failed! My guess is that i may neeed to downgrade to V4 or lower to get this to work. Really all i want to do is boost my wireless signal mbps. I have installed a cooling fan so it should be able to handle the boost i'm still just trying to figure this all out any info?
Thanks
 JRockZ

The Version of your router  (V7) refers to the innards.  Firmware is a different story.
Tomato only works on v1-v4.   If you want to run Tomato you'll need to go to ebay and buy a v1, v2, v3, or v4 router. v5, v6, and v7 don't work with the Tomato stuff.

  • Terrible connection (WRT54GS+Tomato, WMP54GS)

    Hello,
    I have an older WRT54GS (v1 I think) running Tomato 1.23
There are two computers connected, one wired and one wireless via a WMP54GS card (latest drivers). Both machines run Win-XP SP3. The wireless machine is about 10m from the router with one drywall between them.
The wired gets good speed (very close to the promised 6Mbps down / 500Kbps up). The wireless fluctuates between tolerable and unusable.
Rather than copy all the information here, I'd like to point you to a thread on DslReports where I asked this question before I found this forum.  (If this is considered bad form, I apologize and will repost here)
The question and some suggestions that I tried are here:
    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21715728-Re-Tomato-Terrible-wireless-quality-please-help
    Any suggestions are welcome!
    Thank you,
    Alex.

A Firmware Upgrade might help you solve the problem...Have you tried upgrading the firmware to the latest one availeble here , you can even try to update the drivers for your wireless adapter here , make sure you run the router on channels 1, 6, 9, 11.

  • RE1000 unstable (CD Setup, Bonjour setup, Wireless connection - All unstable w/ 2Wire AT&T)

At first, I had connection, and an hour later it wasn't working. Then I tried Bonjour setup through Safari - at first I saw the config page, all fine - 5 minutes later, couldn't connect to it again. Now the CD setup utility can't even find the device anymore.
The RE1000 is a simple, relatively pricey device with ONE job - and since it arrived, it has been absolutely terrible at it!
My Airport express card connects flawlessly - the signal is pretty strong, and has been for years.
My intention is to have 2Wire DSL AT&T router --- wifi ---> RE1000 ---ethernet port---->  Medialink or Linksys WRT54G ----- 2 cables ---->  Mac Pro & PS3 (for connection and media server). I had the WRT54G for a while with Tomato working successfully as a wireless client, and one day it became unstable.
Please, help! I'm losing my mind

The maximum range is only achieved if the device is set up in an environment that is devoid of any interference.  The router that is being used with the extender can also affect the range that it can provide.  For example, using RE1000 with a wireless–G router would make the extender operate on a wireless-G speed. Follow the instructions to this article http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=a3f6ea1b147844c090f7227d504ddbc1_.xml&pid=80&respi... to know maximize the signal.
For dropping connection problem that maybe cause by outdated firmware. Just make sure you don’t have any issue with your main router, update the firmware of the expander, reset and reconfigure.

  • Moderate NAT on WRT54G using tomato firmware

How do i get my NAT to open for my xbox live on a WRT54G v3 router using tomato firmware (latest version).
I opened ports 53, 80-88, and 3704 in the port forwarding, and UPnP is enabled. but i still get a moderate NAT, what am i missing?

    OK,
I ran some tests on my 360....
I have the latest updates XBox360 installed, see router details in my sig...It's a Buffalo, not sure how much difference that is going to make.....
contrary to popular advice I have seen, I have my 360 network settings on full auto (IP and DNS), no port forwarding, with UPnP enabled. I run the XBox Live connection test, and it returns no problems...no mention of NAT, moderate or otherwise....
So....I set my IP to manually assigned, DNS to manually assigned, and re-ran the test, and this time it gave me a notice that I had moderate NAT....
So, it appears that the answer may be to just set everything to auto on the XBox, enable UPnP on the router, without any port forwarding configured for the XBox, and you are good to go. With this config, when I look on the UPnP page in Tomato, I see:
    UPnP Forwarded Ports

    3074      3074       192.168.0.140     UDP      Xbox (192.168.0.140:3074) 3074

  • I can Wake over the Internet with WRT54GS v2 and Tomato Firmware perfectly!

However, this router won't last forever.  Do any of the new routers allow Port Forwarding to a broadcast address, which is necessary for Wake on WAN because of ARP release and renew?  Just spent the week on vacation and several different issues came up which made accessing my desktop at home advantages without having to leave it on all the time.  Thank You

Well now a days all the linksys router has a port forwarding feautre. You can think about N Series Router ( WRT150N, WRT300N, WRT400N, WRT600N).

  • Music server with wrt54gs

I have a wrt54gs wireless router. Everything works great.  I installed a requestauduio music server that has an internet connection.
I set up a static IP and it connects fine to the internet.  The idea is to be able from OUTSIDE of the house connect to the music server.
I go to the website request.com and log in and it tries to connect and it gives me the info. I am not having any luck setting up the linksys to allow me to gain access.
I know my main IP into the home and it finds it.  It tells me the following
    netsync port  4665
    web port 80
    control port 3663
    xml (flash port) 3660
Where and how do I input this into the router?
I went to applications and games
    added application = music
    start 4665 to 4665
    both
the static ip of the device
    and checked enable.
I am doing something wrong. Can anybody please fill in the blanks of my inexperience.

You are in the right place, but you may need to port forward all the ports used by the application. If you forward port 80, is there some kind of security you can set up to restrict access, otherwise you may find everyone on the internat has access to your music....

  • Westell 9100EM and Linsys WRT54G together

In my house, the Westell 9100EM router is in the Far Northeast corner of the home where my (rather old) home computer is located...  Our bedrooms are located on the exact opposite corner of the home, in the SW area.  Wireless service is quite poor in that area.
I have an existing Linksys WRT-54G router that worked very well when I had SBC DSL at an older house in another area.  What I'm thinking is to put the WRT-54G in the middle of the house or in the back bedroom to provide wireless to that corner.
I see a lot of information on the boards and so forth about the Actiontec router and doing this but very little on the 9100EM router.  Can anyone point me in a direction that gives more thorough directions for this?  Has someone made this work?
Thanks in Advance for the help!

Only if you have an ethernet port where you want to put it.  If you do connect to it locally hard wired and change the subnet to 192.168.2 and set the wanport to a fixed address on the 192.168.1 subnet e.g. 192.168.1.254  Then connect the wan port of the linksys to a lan port of the 9100em via the in house wiring.  the linksys by default cannot connect by wirelss to the 9100em.
If you have no inhouse wiring and are somewhat technically savvy and your wrt54g is a newer rev you can hack the firmware to change it to a wireless forwarder - see tomato.  Google it on the net.  Be warned that if you mess it up you have a very light boat anchor.

  • Trying to set up WRT54G as access point

I also put this on the Access Point Forum
    Situation:
    Using a cable modem.
Installed a WIRED SMC barricade router next to the cable modem (just plug & play).
Have 1 PC connected directly to port 2 of the SMC (PC works fine).
Ran a cable from port 1 of the SMC to downstairs.
    Connected cable to the WRT54G.
Via wireless, went into the WRT54G and disable DHCP (and saved settings).
At this point I have can access the internet.
But if I reboot my pc, I can see the WRT54G but do not get internet access nor even access it using 192.168.1.1 (I have to reset the WRT54G and then I can access it).
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
BTW, the SMC IP address is 192.168.2.1, so the only setting I change in the WRT54G was disabling the DHCP.
    Thanks
    Keith

OK, if the SMC's IP is 192.168.2.1, then you would assume your IP would also be on that network. Are you performing a hard reset of the WRT (to factory settings)? If so that would probably explain why you can access 192.168.1.1, because factory rest is to enable DHCP on the 192.168.1.0 network, and your PC may be getting an IP from there before the SMC.
Are the ports on the SMC router just switch ports (same as the ethernet ports on the WRT? If so, which port on the WRT are you connecting to the SMC? If you use one of the ethernet (not the WAN) ports on the WRT, and set it's IP in the 192.168.2.0 network you should be good. Disable DHCP on the WRT, and put it in Router mode, rather than Gateway mode (it doesn't really matter if you are not using the WAN port, as allyou are using are the ethernet ports and the wireless.)
Your DHCP requests will still get passed over to the SMC.

  • Using WPA/TKIP with Linksys WRT54G

I cannot connect my R61i using WPA...it gets through everything except the last step, "waiting for IP configuration".
I can connect my older laptop to the same router using the same security, the Lenovo just doesn't work.  I downloaded everything I could find remotely associated with this from the Lenovo page.
Does this Lenovo not operate under WPA/TKP or am I doing something dumb???
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks, donnyboy

assuming that the WRT54G and Intel WiFi adapter have been updated with the latest firmware and driver, respectively... i would then configure both the WRT54G and TPR61i for WPA2 Personal + AES encryption (but disable TKIP).  and as carbon_unit advised, uninstall thinkvantage access connections, as TVAC is not necessary, and can conflict with Windows' native ability to manage the connections, ime.
i've found that installing Intel ProSet for WiFi (which also includes the wireless adapter drivers), can be helpful; it provides a few more options to fine tune the wireless adapter settings.
and beyond the scope of your question... you might also take a look at 3rd party router firmware, like Tomato or DD-WRT, both of which provide more robust & reliable performance than linksys' stock firmware.  it's a straightforward procedure, but be careful to choose the correct firmware for your particular WRT54G (version).
for optimal performance & reliablity, i'd also configure the router and wireless clients for 802.11g only (disable 802.11a/b)

sounds like a bad flash. Probably the firmware already on the router is corrupt, and trying to flash over it will not work, even with a good image.....you will need to refer to the DD-WRT directions on recovery that I posted a link to earlier in this thread.

How do I find my Linksys WRT54G/WRT54GS/WRT54GL's version?Look at the bottom side of the router to check for the version number, or compare the first 4 characters of the serial number with the following list:
    CDF0/CDF1 = WRT54G v1.0
    CDF2/CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1
    CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0

  • Connecting NH1005 Hub to WRT54g Router

Hello, I am trying to add a hub to my existing (working) router setup. The basic setup will be like:
cable modem -> Router Internet port  -> Router LAN Port 1 -> HUB UPlink port -> HUB Port 1 ->Computer 1
                                                                                                                       -> HUB Port 2 ->Computer2
-> Router LAN Port 2 -> VOIP Router -> Phone
                                                          -> Router LAN port 3 -> Computer 3
Computer 1 is in another part of the house from the physical router location and has been working fine with no hub involved via a long ethernet cable run. I now want to add computer 2 to the same room as computer one by adding the hub. This room is on the other side of the house and I didn't want to add another long run of ethernet cable just to hook it up - which is why I borrowed the hub.
Router is WRT54G V2, running tomato firmware
    Hub is NH1005 v2.0
    VOIP router is RTP300
It all works fine without the hub but when I add the hun computer 1 and 2 have "limited connectivity". Running windows Xp and windows 7 on the boxes.
Is there some router settings or netowrk cards settings I need to change? Thanks
    Mike

You do not have to adjust any settings on your router as your Network is functional...
It seems to be the Hub, power down the hub, connect the Router LAN Port 1 -> HUB Port #1, Connect both the computer's to the HUB on Port #2 and Port #3, Connect the Poer Cable to the HUB, see if both computer's can access the Internet...
