WRT610N and compatible usb drives

Hello,
Has anyone been successful obtaining a stable USB external hard drive connection on the WRT610N?
I would like to use a hard drive enclosure that spins down the drive with a sleep mode for noise and energy reasons.
With the latest firmware (1.00.02 B10) I have tried:
Vantech Nexstar 3i with a Seagate 1 TB - works fine until drive goes to power down mode at which point on spin up the router dumps the drive even though the USB light stays on and the management page shows the drive still connected
Western Digital My Book Essential 1 TB - the router doesn't even mount this external hard drive.  I tried everything... FAT32, NTFS.... waited, plugged the USB in and out, power cycled the router...
Any help would be appreciated as I've been spending countless hours trying to get something to work.
Solved!

Update to my last post. After another hour on with LEvel 2 tech support, I finally had to tell them I found the solution on my own. Tech support wanted to charge me $10 for remotely accessing my computer to see what is wrong. I finnaly said I had the solution, and that I needed firmware Ver 1.00.00 B18. They told me they only have 1.00.00 B17 available on their ftp site. I tried that firmware, and the update failed numerous times.
I searched and finally found 1.00.00 B18 if anyone needs a link. It is:
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/downloads/NA/firmware/FW_WRT610N_1.00.00.18_20080816_code.bin
Firmware Ver 1.00.00 B18 fixed the problem. My WD My Book was instantly recognized with Ver B18. If anyone else has this problem, this should fix it. Thanks again Lotus.

  • Performance Issues with 10.6.7 and External USB Drives

I've had a few performance issues come up with the latest 10.6.7 that seem to be related to external USB drives. I have a 2TB USB drive tha I have my iMovie content on this drive and after 10.6.7 update, iMovie is almost unusable. Finder even seems slow when browsing files on this drive as well. It seems like any access to the drive is delayed in all applications. Before the update, the performance was acceptable, but now it almost unusable. Most of the files on this drive are large dv files.
    Anyone else experience this?

If every person who had a performance issue posted to this thread, we'd never find a solution for the initial poster. Let's isolate each case one by one. It is NOT necessarily the same issue, even if the symptoms are the same. • Can't access the Time Capsule Drive and attached USB drive

I bought the 3 TB Time capsule a couple of months ago.  I am using it as my wireless router for a cable modem and have attached a USB drive (seagate) to the TC.  I use the TC drive for time machine only.  It worked well at first, for about the first month.   Now I have trouble accessing the TC drive as well as the USB drive.  The router function works perfectly fine.  The drives show up in the Finder under Shared but  cannot connect.  Time machine does not back up because it says the back up drive is not available.  In disc utility, the base station shows with the correct name, but I can't access it. It asks for a pasword but does not respond, so I cannot reboot it from my computer.
If I restart the TC (power off and on), it works fine, I can access both drives.  However, this problem recurs, sometimes within a few days.  I have also noticed, which may be related, that when I enter time machine (when everything is working fine), some of the back-ups are blank.  There is a date and time but no actual back-up.  Not sure if this is related.
I'm runing Mavericks 10.9.2 on an older MacBook, 15" late 2008 with 2.4 ghz dual core.

    Hi Bob,
I updated Mavericks but still had the same problem, so I did a hard reset on TC, although I held the button for over 5 seconds and the amber light was flashing rapidly, it acted like a soft reset.  Still no change so I rebooted my laptop.   Still had an excellent internet connection but in AirPort utility, the TC is grayed out and says device not found.  Light on TC was amber.  So, I tried a hard reset again, but the light wouldn't flash at all.  Unplugged it and after pluggin back in, acted like a hard reset.  I restored previous settings and it is fine for the moment.  Will keep you posted if it recurs.  Hopefully it will not with updated Mavericks, but I get the feeling the problem may be the TC.

  • Mini doesn't always connect  bluetooth and external (USB) drives on boot

I have had a new Intel mini for 4 months now (we also have a PPC G5, which we love). In the last few weeks the mini started to not connect my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, nor recognize some of my USB peripherals when booting up. When this happens, it also makes a repeated "startup sound - bong!" echo when the start button is pressed. I have two external USB drives, one 500GB Phantom and one 500GB WD MyBook. When the Apple logo appears at boot, I can see the activity lights flashing on the drives as the BIOS interrogates the USB connections, but after the Leopard start up desktop appears, the only drive shown is Macintosh HD, the mouse pointer is at the top left of the display and will not move, nor will the keyboard do anything. I have read every post on this subject and tried all of the resets suggested. Sometimes this works after a few attempts, sometimes it takes 6 or more tries - disconnecting all cables, and turning the computer on again and again. Occasionally the WD MyBook drive appears on the desktop, yet still the Bluetooth is unresponsive and the other drive absent. I am getting frustrated having to disconnect everything and trying to boot this thing up, sometimes for one hour or longer before I can use it properly (all of my work is on the external drives).
There MUST be a firmware update for this by now, because I see that I am not the only one experiencing these problems, and this is obviously some problem with how the BIOS is communicating with the bus.

    Hi amyta pdx-
I'd be careful jumping to conclusions or the troubleshooting process may get clouded. For one thing those WD drives are junk and most people using them eventually have problems.
What happens with everything disconnected from the Mac except a mouse connected to a USB port on the Mac and the monitor connected to the video port only?
    Luck-

  • T61 - Rescue and Recovery - USB Drive issues

Ran into disk space issues with RnR on my C: since I was not manually using RnR and have other back-up tools, I uninstalled RnR.  A few weeks later, I re-installed the latest RnR version as I now have possesion on a USB Western Digital drive.  I then ran RnR to the USB drive.  Here is the problem:
The USB drive now has a new drive name and letter desigation, from drive G: to drive Y:  The real killer is that I had other files on drive G:
Looking at the drive size, it appears that ALL files are still on the USB drive.
Question:  How do I get the drive to be recognized as drive G:?  How do I get access to the files that were on that drive?  Would un-installing RnR set the drive back to C: and provide access to my files?
Note:  There was no warnings during the back-up that any of this would happen.  I can't find any warnings or descriptions in the manuals either.

Question:  How do I get the drive to be recognized as drive G:?  How do I get access to the files that were on that drive?  Would un-installing RnR set the drive back to C: and provide access to my files?
Vista - start - computer - right click - manage - (if uac on, accept) -  disk management - select the disk- right click and you are given the oportunity to change the drive map (i don't know if that helps)

  • Mounting and Unmounting USB drives [Solved]

    HI there:
I want a program like in KDE that will automaticly mount and allow me to click to unmount my usb drives. I am building machines and I need them to be user friendly and fast. I am running openbox 3.5 with a lxpanel right now. Also how do you allow users to access the usb drives. Here is an example of an error. I am logged in as usera. I fire up shotwell plug in my camera. It detects it I click on the camera and it says
    "Shotwell
Unable to fetch previews from the camera:
    I/O problem (-7)"
I log in as root it works perfectly. I hope this all makes sense.

    Have a look here.
Nice!  I just installed Xfce on my new netbook (I use awesome WM and a different automounting solution for my other Arch box) and adding "dbus-launch" right before "startxfce4" on the line that reads:
    "exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4"
    fixed my problem.
I'm a little confused though, in the wiki it says that, "In case you are wondering, dbus-launch will be launched by the xinitrc.d code at the beginning of the file...."  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfce
My .xinitrc is functionally the same as the example in the wiki, so I had thought that somehow dbus-launch wouldn't be necessary.  Oh well, it's working now and that's all that matters, thanks for your suggestion AliWam!

  • IMac and Formatting USB Drive Issues

I have an 8GB USB drive that I formatted to MS-DOS FAT using my iMac with 10.6.4 on it. However I now realise that that was a stupid thing to do as now that drive no longer works on Windows no matter what I format it too. I want the pen to allow me to use it on both WIndows and Mac (hence the FAT format) however Windows sees the drive as an unformatted 200MB drive with 7.16GB of unallocated and corrupted space which cannot be formatted.
Windows cannot even attempt to allow me to format it to gain the 8GB back as it is unable to format the space even when its turned into free (empty) space. Luckily OSx can still use it as normal but it just means I've lost a perfectly work USB drive due to an error in OSx.
Can anyone help to to fix this as I really want it to work and I'm stumped as to how.
    Thanks!

It shouldn't matter as I created the files and folders originally on a FAT formatted drive and copied them to my Mac then back at a later date, at which point an error was encountered and prevented me copying folders to the dive (the contents was fine once removed from folders and sub folders).
I believe Apple has fixed this now, however when I formatted the drive my iMac had this problem so I believe this effected the FAT formatted drive to prevent Windows working with it.
Well I have finally managed to fix the drive. I had to format the drive to free space and then plug it into a Windows 7 PC and then delete the free partition and reallocate it again to FAT 32. Window Vista and XP where an able to do this as they say I didn't have permission to do this and asked for a restart. Strange but atleast it finally works on both machines.

  • Two Macs and one USB drive?

Can two Macs share one USB drive at the same time? Is there some kind of networking gizzie that would allow this?

If you have a router like the AirPort Extreme - you attach the USB drive to the router and it shares the disk for you.
I know there are other Wireless Access Points and Routers that provide similar functionality, but not all routers do this.
It seems like you are looking for a NAS solution. Typically these are boxes with USB and ethernet ports that you simply install on the network. Right now - Leopard does not always play nicely with them.
Mine is a CoolMax 550 - and it is accessible via command line (terminal) and FTP but unreliably through Finder. Many people hope 10.5.2 resolves this type of issue but no one knows for sure.
Honestly with the price of storage so low - most people just add another drive. Each of my Macs has it's own backup drive on top of the one shared from my Airport Extreme. Storage is down near $0.30/GB or less.
The first time I bought a TB of disk, I spent over a million dollars (thankfully not my money). Today I have over 5TB at home.

  • Time Capsule and multiple USB drives ... no show

    Hi,
probably one of the Apple wizards can enlighten me here, as also the information in this forum seems inconclusive.
I have a Time Capsule, and everything is fine with that.
I can connect one drive via USB, and this drive shows.
However, I seem to be unable to connect two drives, regardless of HUB I use (I tried two powered and two passive ones fron three different vendors), and which sequence I turn these things on and off.
The first drive that is connected shows.
If I connect the hub with already spinning drives, it is nondeterministic which one will show up.
    But only one will show.
    Is this expected behaviour?
I find references on the Apple site and throughout this forum that multiple drives are possible.
    Greetings,
    - Thomas

This is not an answer, but it seemed like a good place to post my latest experience.
I got the Time Capsule and connected three drives to it via USB hub. It worked fine for awhile but then I realized that the backups were not running.
It was a struggle. I finally reinitialized the TC and then got another software program other than Time Machine to run the backups.
So that worked, but now when I plug the other drives in by USB the TC drops off. I can't connect to it.
The TC shows up on the network, but when I plug other drives in to it, it drops off the network.
I finally worked around the problem (with fingers crossed!). I plugged in a couple of the drives to one of my older macs and networked to that drive and the backups seem to be running.
The I plugged one of the drives in to my older Airport Extreme via USB and that backup is running via wireless.
Then if I leave the TC alone with nothing connected to it, I can run a backup to it.
But it is frustrating. First, I could run the backups with TM to the attached drives, no problem. Now, I cannot use the drives connected to the TC via USB. I have to connect them to something else completely.
And that is after the backups stopped working under TM.
It seems like the Holy Grail - a backup program that works.
For today, I think I have worked around my problem, but it is disappointing. I was hoping the TC would allow me to connect drives to it by USB and run the backup through TM. Now TC is basically a networked drive. (Forgot to mention that i am not using it for wireless connection.) I turned that function off and it just a networked drive.

  • Why does Startup Manager only show Recovery HD and not my other drives like Macintosh HD and my USB drive?

I'm not really sure what happened to my Mac but when I start it, it only shows Recovery HD and nothing else.  I tried re-installing Mountain Lion through my Apple ID but it states that I have not purchased it and will not let me proceed.  I have bought a usb drive that has Mountain Lion, since I cannot purchase it in the apple store, on it to install it from there but I cannot boot into my USB because it only shows "Recovery HD" in Startup Manager.  I would really appreciate some input from you all, thank you for your time in advance.

Either your drive is failing or has been corrupted. Please try the following. You cannot do the following unless you have purchased Lion or later. From your post that's not clear. Without knowing your exact model I cannot tell you what to do.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If your computer is a 2010 or earlier model, then you should be able to do the following:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • EA 6400 compatible USB drives

I have a WD Essentials, 2 TB, USB drive.  It works fine with my computer.  However, it isn't recognized by the EA6400 router.
I looked at the list of tested devices and they have a WD My Book Essentials 3 TB on the list.  There is either an Essentials, or a My Book, but not one that combines the two.
Also on the list are several internal hard drives.  These are clearly not USB, so how did they make the list ?
When I looked at the drives on the list, they all indicated they are Windows drives.  The point is to allow all devices to have access, but these say they must be reformatted to work with Macs, and then they wouldn't work with Windows.
NAS drives do both but they just connect with an ethernet connection.  The advantages of router based storage would then be lost.
Obviously there is much I am not understanding about this.  I tried a chat to see if I could get a reference to a doc that would explain what I need, but the tech really didn't answer the questions and just dropped out of the conversation.
I'd sure love some suggestions on this.  Preferably, if someone can recommend a good drive, about 2TB or larger, that they have used with this router and multiple devices ( Windows, Mac, and iOS ) I would be grateful.

Maybe the drive is not supported by the router. Check if your drive is in the List of Tested USB Hard drives and Printers for EA6400.

  • Internal and External USB Drive access has failed!

    Hello Troubleshooters,
I am a new forum member. The following is a post I sent out last month but no one has as yet solved my problem.
Could you try for me please?
    Thanks, Major Mac.
SOS... Please help me solve this problem that occurred suddenly.
I can no longer see any CD or DVD on my Desktop when I load the Drive... no access.
Neither can I see any Printer, Flash Drive, or any external Drive whether plugged into a USB or Ethernet Port. Only my Canon Camera loads onto the iPhoto Application via USB, and my Internet link via Ethernet.
Is a Driver damaged or missing? Does this have anything to do with BIOS or Firmware? Just guessing.

I apologise for the late reply guys. My service provider was experiencing some tech difficulties and I had no connection for most of today.
    Thanks to Roam, Cornelius, BDAqua, Kappy and K. Shaffer. Your Tech info and suggestions tremendously increases my learning curve.... I notice, even among each other (;
Now that I have Internet access restored, I will attempt your suggestions, starting by attempting a "Safe Mode Boot", then Apple Jack.
Concerning your personal preference for Tech Tool Pro, DriveGenius or Disk Warrior (in that order) I became supprised because I read from either BDAqua, Littleshoulders, or someone else, who suggested those Tools in the opposite order of preference, and also submitted links to testimonials which highly rate Disk Warrior as the best and their life saver (after God). I was really impressed with Disk Warrior, that's why I have decided to find the money to purchase it.
But because I'm studying and not earning income, I am attempting everything everything possible that has little or no cost to execute a fix.
So if I get no positive results from "Safe Mode Boot", or Apple Jack, then I will attempt the procedures stated in your link for "Kappy on Error -9972".
I tell you Cornelius... this mouthful of troubleshooting info from Kappy is one to be recorded and used for greater learning.
If I had this info a year ago, most likely I would not have lost my data on my original HDD that came with my G4. Yes.. I am experiencing problems with a new HDD that a Technician installed in my G4 only a year ago. Yes... its a Seagate Barracuda 7200-10 160Gb. Now tell me that this brand is no good so that I would feel comfortable with my Technician. Good thing is that he gave me back my original Hitachi Deskstar 7200 120Gb which I felt I might be able to salvage in the future. But having no time to pursue it because of my studies. Now.. push has come to shove!
What I need you guys to know is that I had similar trouble reports from Apple Disk Utility about the original HDD which got worse until the HDD refused to boot. But this time around, the replacement HDD boots and runs pretty good, even with one 512Mb memory card installed. It's just that I no longer have access to the Super Drive, or any external drive via USB or Ethernet. Tomorrow I'm going to hook up an external drive via my Firewire port and hope to see it on my desktop screen.
Thanks to K. Shaffer for the link to Smart-Utility. I will read up on that tonight and see what help I can access also.
Again thanks for the prompt replies. I will be monitoring the forum tonight to look for your replies, and will update you all later tonight as well.
    BTW How do you all receive all these posts on the fly? Is it that you're logged in 24/7 ?? Or are you subscribed to everyone on board? (;

  • Using Time Machine and external USB drive for multiple Macs

I just bought a 1.5TB external portable drive.  I have 4 macs in the household that might have about 400 - 500 GB of total HD capacity for the four of them.  I am very confused on whether to create a separate partition for each mac, or let Time Machine manage the entire, single-partition drive.
The reason I ask is because I have run into issues with a smaller external HD where it didnt seem to know to remove old backups to make room for new ones.  But, its' possible the 750 GB drive was too small to do what it needed to do.
So, I am looking for some definitive information on the best way to do this.  Obviously, i'd rather leave the 1.5TB as a single partition, and hope (and expect) Time Machine to manage the backups of the four macs in such a way that it can properly make room as backups are added to the drive.
    THoughts?

    D/FW wrote:
Use a 1TB Time Capsule to backup wirelessly and a FW800 external drive for speed in case I need to reinstall. Therefore having 2 backups?
You can do that, but not simultaneously. TM only has one destination a a time; you can back up to the TC, then select the external HD via TM Preferences, then switch back.
I've been down the road of using SD (cloning) and am ready to move on to another backup strategy. Cloning works fine but it dedicates a drive 100% of the time where TM doesn't.
I don't know what you mean by that. I use CarbonCopyCloner (similar to SD) in addition to full TM backups, so I have two separate, independent backups, on two separate drives, and get the advantages of both. You can partition an external drive (but not a Time Capsule), so you could have your clone on one partition, and other things in one or more additional partitions (I do that as well). As long as the "clone" partition is the same size as your internal HD (or at a minimum, at least 15% larger than the amount of data on it), you can use the rest of the space for anything else.
See #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum for detailed instructions on setting-up a drive for Time Machine. The same procedure works for setting one up for a clone and other partition(s), too.

  • Lenovo C255 - USB Drive and USB HDD is not recognized

    Hi
I am trying to attach SSD (Kingston SSDnow 300 -  60gb) drive to PC via bridge SATA-USB to USB 3 port, so i have "USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge" stuff at installed devices and no HDD disks appeared at MyComputer . Still i have 2 disks at Device manager - my native HDD and this USB Drive.
The problem is that BIOS doesn't see any USB HDD. Excluded from the bootable device : USB HDD USB CDROM.
So how i can solve this issue ?

    Hi
I will try to help you buddy.
    > When it is started is says "Insert system disk in drive. Press any key when ready
This message appeared on my notebook after the HDD has died.
I had to replace the HDD and to install the OS again.
I assume its the same problem with your notebook. The HDD is not present or not recognized and you have to install a compatible HDD to get the OS running.
I have googled a little bit and found out that this notebook was delivered with the 10GB Toshiba MK1016GAP HDD. It supports the ATA-2/ATA-3/ATA-4/ATA-5 interface.
Please note that many BIOS have an HDD size limitation. This means that not all HDD sizes are supported! I presume a 20GB should be compatible but this is only my own opinion
    > How can I change my BIOS so that the HDD is recognized?
The BIOS cannot be changed apart from the update (check Toshiba driver page -> Archive -> Satellite Archive).
But vary important is that you will use a compatible HDD.
    > Can anybody help me with the recovery CD?
Dont know if you will be able to order this CD from the authorized service provider in your country because the notebook is really an oldie. But you should ask the guys.
What you could is to install the OS from the Microsoft CD and then could install some necessary drivers.
