X crashes when terminating java3d application....

I have an application which uses java3d. So we've tried to bundle java3d with the application. Everything runs fine till the application is terminated, when X crashes.
* Added j3audio.jar, j3utils.jar, j3core.jar and vecmath.jar to JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext
* Added libJ3D.so, libJ3DUtils.so and libj3daudio.so to JAVA_HOME/lib/i386
What might be the problem?
Rana

Wow. I thought I was the only person in the world with that problem.
I had not played with Java3D for many months (mostly because of stated problem). Last week, I
loaded up the latest Java3D (I think I got it from Blackdown). I verified that problem still exists. I then
proceeded to play with the old NCSA Portfolio object file loader. When I exited the sample program,
my X DID NOT DIE!
After that, I ran my other 3D programs and they no longer crashed either.
Doesn't make much sense. I checked the exit code for the Portfolio sample program, and it just does
a System.exit(). I don't see how it could be that program, but nothing else changed. Maybe something
was cached in some 3D RAM somewhere, or maybe the new Java3D fixed it and there's some other
reason why the fix didn't happen right away. Definitely needs more testing (most importantly, to see
whether the problem is permanently fixed or was just fixed for that X session). Since my desktops are
filled with work, I can't hazard running a 3D app to test it now.
SYSTEM SETUP DETAILS FROM LAST YEAR
Same problem happened consistently on 4 Linux workstations that were running RedHat 6.2, then
7.0, then 7.1 (the problem did not change over OS upgrades). I used generic RH kernels and
kernels built specifically for the corresponding graphic chipsets and DRI support-- didn't matter at
all.
If you find out anything, pls update this thread. I will update it this eve if I have time to do more testing.

  • Finder crashes when clicking on Applications folder

VERY weird. Beginning a few days ago the finder on my Mac Pro crashes whenever I clicked on the Applications folder. It makes no difference what finder view I am using (icons, columns, etc.). Even if I click on the alias to the Applications folder in the sidebar, the finder crashes. I cannot view the contents of that folder by any method. The only way I can get to an item contained therein is to search for it using Spotlight.
Thinking that maybe my startup disk was hosed somehow, I ran Disk Utility (repaired permissions and verified the disk) and ran all tests within TechTool Deluxe. Both said the disk and filesystem were fine.
I tried copying the entire folder to another disk, but the copy aborts after the first few items (stops with Adobe Photoshop; the next item alphabetically is Aperture). In case Aperture was somehow a problem, I removed it (searched using Spotlight and then dragged it to the trash). No change in behavior.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to replicate the entire drive to another, newly reformatted drive and made that drive the startup disk. No change in behavior.
It sure seems that the issue has to do with some kind of file corruption (that CCC dutifully replicated) rather than a faulty drive, but I have no idea where to look next for a solution (other than reformatting and reinstalling over 100 applications from scratch; ugh).
Does anyone have any idea what may be going on here? Until I can fix this, the Mac Pro is pretty much useless (luckily, I also have a MacBook Pro).

Hi - I too am having this issue.
When I click on any of the items in my sidebar (i.e. -desktop, documents, applications, etc...) this causes the finder to crash and restart.
I have tried trashing the com.apple.finder.plist and running disk utility but to no avail.  I also found this other forum discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1336291?start=0&tstart=0) Where this was part of the post

Re: finder crashes when clicking desktop icon in sidebar - any help?
Feb 2, 2008 3:43 PM (in response to choegl)
choegl, that crash is the same place as andreas's but it got there in a different manor. In the manor I would expect it to. It is trying to retarget the window to your selection in the sidebar and setup List View according to the view options for that folder from that folder's .DS_Store. Its specifically trying to get the label for one of the columns in List View (i.e. Size or Name or Date Modified) but the value it gets from the .DS_Store is corrupt/bogus and causes the Finder to crash (specifically a component underneath the Finder call CoreFoundation via a call to CFStringGetLength). Here's how you solve your problem. In /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app type: +cd <path to problem folder>+
    +rm .DS_Store+
+killall Finder+ Pressing return after each line. You can get the path to the problem folder by drag/dropping the folder into the Terminal window. When the Finder comes back up, see if it still crashes when you click on that problem folder (i.e. your Desktop) in the sidebar. Repeat the steps above for any other folders that behave this way when you click on them in the sidebar. Hope that helps everyone...
btw, I wrote up a bug report on your behalf about this issue and sent it off to Apple (# 5721669)."
I tried this as well and nothing!
Anyone have any suggestions?  I'm at a loss and am hating this issue!  BTW, if I right click on any of the items in the sidebar, I can then click on open to get the folder to open.  HASSLE!  and if I forget (which is likely since I move too fast for my own good) then I crash the finder.  Also, this happens on all the users on my mac.
    Thanks!!!!

  • Finder crashes when scrolling through applications folder

Hi, folks! I recently updated to 10.4.5 and ran the latest security update. Now, when I open my applications folder using the 'list view' format and attempt to scroll down below the Microsoft Office folder, the Finder crashes. If I open my Applications folder and use 'icon view' I cannot scroll at all. Any attempt to do so, immediately crashes the finder. If I first resize the view window to be larger than the default size, the Finder immediately crashes when I open the Applications folder.
Nothing else seems to be effected. The applications I can launch either from the limited 'list view' window or from the Dock, all seem to function properly. I simply cannot get to all my applications in the Application's folder. The Utilities folder is unaffected.
Any ideas or fixes? This is very annoying!
PowerBook G3 (Bronze Keypad)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hey, Rich!
Sorry to be so long getting back to you. I did not get a chance to try your recommendation before my system was totally corrupted and I had to reinstall my OS. The corruption occurred when I updated to 10.4.6. After running software update, the computer went into the "infinite spinning color wheel" mode. I had to initiated a hard reset and was never able to get the machine to boot. Hence, I had to reinstall the OS. I tried an archieve and install but, I think my removeable DVD drive imust be getting old as the install quit half way through the process. I finally used a firewire external DVD drive and successfully reinstalled the OS but now am having to recreate all my network stuff and other preferences. Fortunately, all my data was left in tack and I was able to recover it.
Oh, bother! Anyway, thank you for the suggestion. I wish I had had the opportunity to try it! Now, because of all this, I am scared to death to run any of the updates!

  • X crashes when using some applications

First, I realised the problem with Gnome System Monitor... 10-15 seconds after starting it, my X crashes and gives me back the login manager.
The same problem appeared when I was trying the new KDE 4.2... ~1min after login it crashed.
Now I installed Gnome Do 0.8.1 and X always crashes when I click on the triangle in the upper-right corner of it.
I have no clue what to do, but I guess it can be connected with my graphic card (Nvidia 8400M on Dell Vostro 1510), using nvidia-180.29-3 drivers from extra repo...

Can I somehow fix this problem?

I´ve had the same problem and what i did was to build the xf86-input-evdev-1.1.3 (1.1.4 and 1.1.5 aren´t working for me at least) with abs, that solved it. here you have the PKGBUILD:

    source=(${url}/releases/individual/driver/${pkgname}-${pkgver}.tar.bz2)
    build() {
    cd ${startdir}/src/${pkgname}-${pkgver}
    ./configure --prefix=/usr \
    --build=${CHOST} --host=${CHOST}
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR=${startdir}/pkg install || return 1
i don´t know what the problem is with those two versions. It's not a minor error.

  • Installed 10.6.3. Fine at first, now crashes when launching any application

    Hi.
Not sure that's the best subject for this thread, but its a long story.
was running 10.5.6 for ages. no problem
upgraded to 10.6.3 two weeks ago. everything went well. all my apps worked. I got latest drivers for my audio interfaces and everything was good.
Today, I put a dvd in for my daughter to watch, and the mac just hung ( spinning beachball, mouse moves, but can't click on anything )had to press power switch to turn off. turned on again, same thing. restarted again. tried to launch iTunes. icon bounced for a minute or so, then stopped. mouse moves, can't click on anything. beachball appears if you hover over the top menu bar.
So, I got the 10.6.3 disk out, re-installed from scratch. 45 mins later, clicked on iTunes, opened first time, plays no problem. opened couple of other apps, all well.
restarted the mac, nothing launches again!! reinstalled 10.6.3 again, everything launches as normal. Restarted, nothing launches.. So everything works after a fresh install, but restarting puts me back where I started.
clicked on spotlight while it was working and it said it was indexing the HDD, but other than that, no clue as to what could be wrong. I've not had chance to run Hardware test as I'm at work, so i'll do that in the morning, but any other suggestions or possible issues would be greatly appreciated. I have a session booked next week, and need to get a replacement if I can't get this sorted.
very many thanks to those who read and or offer help
    Dale Smith

    Hi.
update. I ran disk utility and apple hardware test, both show nothing. So I unplugged everything, re-installed 10.6.3 again, and everything was fine, restarted the machine a few times, and everythings well.
So, I plugged stuff in one at a time to see if I could replicate the issue, and when I plug my external usb hard drive in, the fault occured, had to power of using the rear button. unplugged the drive, all's fine.
I ran disk utility on the external drive, and it shows nothing. I plugged another external drive into the same usb port to eliminate that, and that drive works fine.
The thing is, the original drive thats causing the machine to crash is working fine. I can read, copy, write to and from it. Its only when I try to lauch any application that the problems start..
    madness!

  • Finder crashes when opening the application file

Everytime I click the application file it takes 30 seconds atleast to open, then when scrolling through it it freezes mid way down, displays the wrong icons.. freezes for another 30seconds and then finally continues to the bottom.
I have tried repairing permissions among other things without much success..
    any ideas?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

After doing so, did you perform one of the following tasks?
    Log out, then in again.
Relaunch the Finder by choosing Force Quit from the Apple menu, selecting Finder, then clicking the Relaunch button.
If so, I suggest checking the hard drive for any directory errors with Disk First Aid via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc.

  • RH8 crashes when starting the application

Everytime i attempt to start RH8 the splash screen pops up and starts loading but when it gets to Loading HTML Editors, it crashes with the following:
I have performed a repair and nothing has changed.  I suppose it will be the uninstall then reinstall but i did not want to go that route without checking to see if anyone else has encountered this problem.

I have solved my problem.  Switching to one video card got me on the right track in the previous post.  I was attempting to try a previous restore point and hit the F2 button which opened the BIOS for my laptop.  I started poking around in there to see what options were available and what setting options were selected.
I found an interesting dock setting that allows the video card in the laptop to act as a primary and the dock video card to work as a secondary.  This allows my laptop screen to stay on and not require a hot dock.  It also allows RoboHelp to open properly.  There must be something in RH8 that was not happy about running from the secondary video card set as primary.  It has been working perfectly for years this way but I guess some windows update changed that now.
This is a very nice setup though, a dell laptop in a d-dock with a pci dual video card.  It allows the laptop screen plus another monitor off the dvi port on back of the dock, plus 2 more monitors off the dual video card allowing 4 monitors.  It sounds like a lot but it allows me to use the laptop for email and helpdesk calls while using on monitor for solidworks, another with robohelp, and the 4th with photoshop, word and sometimes illustrator.
Anyway, my system works better than ever and RH8 seems to be working normally now.  I think that there was a windows update the other day that started this whole problem rolling.  A rather odd solution to a nonstandard setup.  I wish our IT guys would have told me about this BIOS setting.  They are just trying to keep their heads above water while a few of us are pushing our computers to the maximum of their capabilities and they don't want to use their resources to really fix our problems.  They would rather reformat our drives and load the last image that worked to solve problems.  Brutal.

  • System Profiler Crashes When Saving

    Hi,
I am trying to the xml file from System Profiler. Every time I attempt to save, System Profiler crashes when it reaches "Applications". It is reporting the following error:
    Application Specific Information:
    SPApplicationsDataType
    * error for object 0x101040208: incorrect checksum for freed object - object was probably modified after being freed.
I have tried running System Profiler immediately after a restart incase there was an application running and creating this error. Any advice would be amazing. Thanks!

Douglas you are not alone on this. I have the same exact problem on my iMac i7, showing the same exact error in the crash report. I even used Disk Utility to partition my internal hard drive, after which I reinstalled OS 10.6 from the iMac's master DVD, and after that I installed all the updates via the internet. Even in the perfectly clean condition, I get a crash when I try to save the ASP report. It also crashes when I do the same via the Terminal.
It's quite amusing really. The only reason I am trying to save an ASP report is because I filed a bug report about my iMac locking up once a week when I wake from sleep, and Apple Engineering asked me to save the ASP Report for them. But I cannot save it due to a crash. So I submitted crash logs to Apple Engineering in the same bug report. I suggest you do the same. It would appear to be a bug in the OS, as evidenced by the fact we get it even after a clean install of the OS on a brand new drive partition.
    Here's the Apple Bug Reporter:
    https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa
And before anyway suggests it to me too, yes, I've telephone AppleCare. I've phoned them 3 times so far concerning my Sleep problem, and during the third phone conversation they upgraded me to a Senior Advisor and I reported the ASP crash too. They had no idea what to say about that, even when I mentioned my bug report to Apple Engineering.

  • All Applications crash when I try to print (2)

I have and epson EPL-6200L b/w laser printer and an epson 1270. the 1270 s fine. the 6200 crashes EVERY application, from text edit to adobe inDesign. In text edit, I can open the 'page setup' dialog box and edit, but clicking the 'print' button causes a crash (if I change the default printer to the 1270, it will open the dialogue box, but crash when I select the 6200L). The message I get is "the problem may have been caused by the EPSONPagePDE plug-in" (verbatim). In console, it shows a bus error.
    18/11/2008 17:19:47 com.apple.launchd122 (0x0-0x39039.com.apple.TextEdit402) Exited abnormally: Bus error
    I have deleted the epson folder; reinstalled the driver from a fresh download;
reset the printing system in the print & fax preferences.
I have also typed the following in the terminal window (based on another post):
    rm -rf ~/.lpoptions ~/.cups
    …and this:
    1. Go to Terminal
    2. Test the permissions on your temp folder by typing:
    touch $TMPDIR/foo
    3. It will say 'permission denied'. (it didn't say this for me)
    4. Change the permissions on your temp folder by typing:
    sudo chmod 775 $TMPDIR
You will need to enter your password.
None of this has made a difference. Anyone have a suggestion?

You could try removing the EpsonPagePDE plugin from /Library/Printers/EPSON/LaserPrinter/GD2/PDE/ or renaming it. You may lose some functionality, but it shouldn't crash.
This crash could be because of missing string or something similar, so reinstalling the driver wouldn't help unless there is an update that contains a fix.
If after trying this you are still crashing, please post the entire crash log.

My CC crashes when I try to open any application - this has been happening for about a week. I installed CC over two months ago and now I cannot use any of the creative suite applications. I don't want to uninstall becuase I am afraid I won't know how to reinstall. what do you suggest. help!

There is no error message. Every application simply crashes and a dialog box to send a report comes up. when I click for details the first of about 100 lines of text/code under "problem details and system configuration" are:

as I scroll down I see this:

how would I go about opening anything in a new user account? I purchased CC under my email and password that i have been using with apple for years. I don't have another email to use, and I don't want to change my subscription. Is that what you are suggesting?

  • Kernel Panic and Application Crashes when Accessing a Folder

    Hi,
I originally posted in the iTunes forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=252516&tstart=75) with this problem as it was in iTunes where I first noted the issue. However since then I have discovered it is a system wide issue.
Everytime I try to access a specific folder, my iTunes Music folder, whichever application is accessing it will crash. Finder crashes when trying to view the folder, and other apps will crash when trying to open from or save to that folder. There will be no crash reporter when they crash either. I have also experienced two kernel panics, one when iTunes was playing, and another when Tech Tools Pro was doing its surface scan. The folder is on one of my two FW800 connected external hard drives. The kernel panic looks like this:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002478C8): hfs: block mark free: trying to free non-existent blocks (-1094886590 -1078469906 39039948)

I am not entirely sure as to what this means or how to deal with it. I am able to access the folder via terminal, but there are 2700 folders within my iTunes Music folder and 23137 songs, so it could take me a very long time to find the exact file or folder which is causing me problems. I could potentially have enough disk space should a backup be required but it would be backed up to 3 different drives and would be close. That is assuming of course that I would not experience the same panic when accessing the area. Can anyone help me with this?
    Powerbook G4 1.25Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    The first phase:
Since the Kernel Panic is temporarily a state of suspended animation because of a safe-boot solution, try the next step. This is a pre-caution to avoid any failures during ongoing troubleshooting.
After safe-boot, launch System Profiler and select /Software/Extensions/ directory in Contents (on the left column ) menu. Next, open /System/Library/Extensions/ folder by Go to Folder command or by manual. Compare the both contents. You'll see System Profiler shows less kernel extensions than /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. There are ".kext" files that are not shown in the loaded Extensions directory. If there is a most suspect third-party extension (perhaps FireWire's driver), try removing out of the folder to a temporary made folder on the desktop-- you may be prompted the admin or login password.
    The second phase:
TechTool Pro fixed a file structure error in one file on the main drive, and some bad custom icons or bad bundle bits error now lie on on the main and one of your secondary drives, but not the previous problems. Also, you still cannot access that folder, however folders within that folder you can get to just fine, via the Go To Folder command or reveal in finder from iTunes.
Those symptoms appear to suggest that some directories structure and the volume information other than the main drive have lost their consistencies and a directory may be no longer accessible for some reason which happened before or during the Kernel Panic. Techtool Pro 4.0.6 seems to not be able to fix those problems. So if you have DiskWarrior 3.0.3, run it and hopefully fix them. If you do not have it, try the followings.
Connect the external FireWire drive in question, then boot into a Safe-mode. If this does not work well, first boot into a Safe-mode then connect the device.
Launch Terminal utility. Type diskutil list at the prompt. Here is an example to be displayed:
    MyMachine:~ Myself$ diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
    #: type name size identifier
    0: Applepartitionscheme *233.8 GB disk0
    1: Applepartitionmap 31.5 KB disk0s1
    2: Apple_HFS MacOSX_HD 70.7 GB disk0s3
    3: Apple_HFS Data_HD 162.8 GB disk0s5
    /dev/disk1
    #: type name size identifier
    0: Applepartitionscheme *111.8 GB disk1
    1: Applepartitionmap 31.5 KB disk1s1
    2: Apple_HFS Data21HD 69.9 GB disk1s3
    3: Apple_HFS Debugger_HD 41.6 GB disk1s5
Find the disk identifier that points the external device in question. Type sudo fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk1s3 if the target drive would be disk1s3. If the result shows you like below, the symptoms may be fixed.
    MyMachine:~ Myself$ sudo fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk1s3
    ** /dev/rdisk1s3
    ** Checking HFS Plus volume.
    ** Checking Extents Overflow file.
    ** Checking Catalog file.
    ** Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    ** Checking Extended Attributes file.
    ** Checking volume bitmap.
    ** Checking volume information.
** The volume Data21HD appears to be OK.
If the above solution fails, boot into a Single-user-mode and perform the same way as above-- a "sudo" parameter MIGHT not be needed to type.
    The third phase:
Start up from Mac OS X 10.4.x Install disc. Launch Disk Utility program. Try repairing the target volume(s) on the external device and then repair the permissions.
If the above solution fails to fix all filesystem problems on that volume, then you may need to abandon hope some file or folder in question to trash it/them. Of course, I do not hope so.…
Also, when I booted into Safe Mode it started up the volume menubar item as usual but I had no sound... Is this normal during a Safe boot?
Certain Mac OS X features do not work when you are started up in Safe Mode. For example, you can't use DVD Player, capture video in iMovie, use an AirPort card, use audio input or output devices, or use an internal or external USB modem.
So it should be no problem on this matter.

  • All video applications crash when loading a video. Including web browsers, vlc and quick time

Last night chrome started crashing when trying to load a youtube video. I tried on safari and then downloaded firefox but they crashed too blaming flash player. Then when i tried to play a video using vlc that crashed too and so did quick time. Nothing will play in any application.
I've tried reinstalling the browsers, uninstalling and reinstalling flash player, repairing disk permissions, starting in safe mode and installing avast to scan for malware but none of these have made any difference. I haven't installed any updates since the last time it was working
When verifying the disk permissions i get the following and no matter how many times i repair them it says the same thing

  • SplWOW64 Service APP Crash when Print Spooling from a 32bit Application

Wanted to throw out an informational post to hopefully save some people some time!
The issue that I encountered is related to users running Windows 7 64-bit trying to print from a 32-bit application.
This started as what I thought was a QuickBooks issue and after too many hours of debugging came back to an error with the splWOW64 Spool Service.
If you are in Firefox you will get an "Error encountered while printing" or in QuickBooks you will get about 5 different Cannot Connect to Printer Errors. You can view the error in the Event Viewer from Administrator Tools. The error is an APP CRASH
    related to the sqlWOW64 Service.
To fix this error you will need to Manually Restart the Print Spooling Service from Services. To get there go:
    Start->Right Click on Computer-> Manage
After you have restarted the service (or you can restart the computer) go to your Devices and Printers accessible from the Start Menu. Follow these steps to disable Spooling:
Right Click on the Printer and Select Printer Properties
    Select the Advanced Tab
Click the Radio Button next to "Print Directly to Printer" instead of the top option to spool.
Try to print from any 32-bit application.
If this doesn't resolve the issue and you are using a network printer you may need to update the drivers for the printer manually instead of find
    From the Devices and Printers:
    Add a Printer
    Add a Local Printer
Create New Port -> Select TCP/IP
    Enter in the IP Configuration
When it asks you to Select a printer hit Windows Update to Update the Printer Drivers
After this is complete Select your printer.
When Prompted use the Replace driver option
Make sure the Settings for the printer are the same as listed above
Hopefully this will save some troubleshooting time and Microsoft can get 32 bit print spooling fixed!

If you have an older HP printer, there is a QFE for splwow64.exe.  You can determine which file is causing the process corruption as well if you wanted to narrow this down further.  I assume you already picked up the QuickBooks fix for this issue
    as stated in this post

FIX: A legacy HP printer driver may crash when you run a 32-bit application on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or of Windows Server 2008 R2

  • OCCI client application crashing, when implemented in a shared library

    Dear All,
I have a problem running my Oracle C++ client using OCCI.
The client crashes when it tries to call the OCCI createConnection method.
The crash happen only if the connection method is implemented inside of an object that it is build in a shared library, which after it is linked to the main program. If I implement everything in the main function the crash does not happen.
I am building and running my client on SLES9 service pack 2 (Linux kernel 2.6.5) using Oracle 10.2g (10.2.0.1) and gcc 3.3.3, glibc 2.3.3 and libaio-0.3 and libaio-devel-0.3.

Attaching the core with gdb, I get the following stack:
