X11 Default Starting Color

I have been using X11 for for my astronomy work for quite a while now. I always like it to have black background with cyan foreground.
However, all this time, I can only do it by opening X11 and type
xterm -bg black -fg cyan &
in order to achieve this. I wonder is there any way do make X11 start with an xterm with this colour-scheme BY DEFAULT?
I tried fiddling with those XTerm-color files, but the system won't even let me edit them.
Please kindly help me on this topic (and if necessary to edit .* files, please also let me know about the permission issues.)
I have a Mac Mini 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo running Tiger 10.4.6
Thank you very much!
P.S. I have heard of the method of setting DISPLAY to 0:0, but I would really like to just have to open X11.
[EDIT]
Nevermind. I found the way to do it (I spent a long time looking through search results and after posting this, I accidentally came across a topic that shed light on this!)
Anyway, for those interested, I copied the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to $HOME/.xinitrc
In there, I changed this:
# start some nice programs
xterm &
to this:
# start some nice programs
xterm -bg black -fg cyan &

  • How do I change the default window color?

    Having white screens is too bright for my eyes!! I always change the default window color in Windows (hiss hiss) to a light shade of gray and that setting carries thru to all windows (i.e. Word, Excel, notepad....). Is it possible to do a similar thing with Tiger? I see that I can choose between a couple of "schemes" from a "Desktop and Dashboard Settings" area (or similar - i don't have my mac here now so can't look to see the proper name) but I see no way to alter colors within those schemes. If you can tell me how to change the default color for my windows I will be awfully happy. thanks.

    Personally, I wouldn't trust it, and I don't hesitate to try these things most of the time even though they sometimes cause problems. But I've used Unsanity products before and they all require installing a preference pane called APE; Application Enhancement module, and that thing caused me lots of problems for my system, lots of crashes and flakiness. I won't use it again.
    But I'm sure there are lots of people using it happily, but if you don't feel confident in dealing with system problems stay away from anything that adds a system preference pane or goes up in the top menu bar at the top (Apple icons excepted) or has to start up with the system.

  • X11 not starting after upgrade to Snow Leopard

    Hello, sorry if this is trivial stuff for all of you, but I am really having trouble sorting this out; I'd be grateful if anyone can help. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.2), did the Combo update as suggested in www.apple.com, but I cannot get X11 to run since the upgrade (I did re-install X11 from the optional installations, btw). The symptoms are that when I try to run any X11 application (such as xmgrace, gnuplot or xfig), or even if I click directly on the X11 icon in the Utilities folder, the X11 icon keeps jumping in and out of the dock; I reproduce below what shows up in the console. Needless to say that I have read through it, but cannot make any sense of what is reported there. I can't believe I'm the only one having this problem, since all I have done is to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard following the standard procedure. Should I perhaps do a clean install?
    Thanks in advance.

    A zero size is not unusual, especially if you cannot set any preferences because you cannot get
    x11 to start.
    Your user account may very well be hosed.
    Here is some info on how to replace it:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10730965
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507
    I believe the easiest way to accomplish this is to first repair your user account permissions
    using the SL install DVD. This won't fix the account, but it will make sure the user data in the
    account has the correct permissions before backing it up for transfer later.
    Mac OS X v10.5 or later: While started from the Leopard Install DVD, a user's home directory permissions can be reset using the "Reset Password" utility.
    I suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner or equivalent to backup and restore your account data.

  • Default background color and Focuslistener disapair on table?

    When I imp. TableCellRenderer on my table the default background color and Focuslistener disapair. What can I do to get it back and still keep TableCellRenderer on my table? This is how my TableCellRenderer looks:
        public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable table, Object value, boolean isSelected, boolean hasFocus, int row, int col) {
            JFormattedTextField beloeb = new JFormattedTextField();
            beloeb.setFormatterFactory(new DefaultFormatterFactory(new NumberFormatter()));
            beloeb.setBorder(null);
            beloeb.setHorizontalAlignment(JTextField.RIGHT);
            if (value != null) {
                if (value instanceof Double) {
                    Double val = (Double) value;
                    beloeb.setValue(val);
                    if (val.doubleValue() < 0) {
                        beloeb.setForeground(Color.RED);
            beloeb.setFont(new Font("Verdana",Font.PLAIN, 11));
            beloeb.setOpaque(true);
            return beloeb;
        }

    I'm sorry to say this is a terrible example of a renderer. The point of using a renderer is to reuse the same object over and over. You don't keep creating Objects every time a cell is renderered. In your example your are creating:
    a) JFormattedTextField
    b) NumberFormatter
    c) DefaultFormatterFactory
    d) Font.
    So you start by extending the DefaultTableCellRenderer. A JLabel is used to display the text. There is no need to use a JFormattedTextField. All you want to do is format the data. So in your constructor for the class you would create a NumberFormatter that can be reused to format your data. Then your code in the renderer would look something like:
    if (value instanceof Double)
        Double val = (Double)value;
        setText( formatter.format(val) );
        if (negative)
          setForeground(Color.RED)
        else
            setForeground(table.getForeground());
    }Here is a really simple [url http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=57&thread=419688]example to get you started

  • Flex 4 lacks the default-background-color compiler option?

    Hello,
    started converting my Flex 3 applications to Flex 4 and noticed that Flex 4 lacks the default-background-color compiler option.
    Flex 3 has it: http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/help.html?content=compilers_14.html
    Flex 4 doesn't: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flex/using/WS2db454920e96a9e51e63e3d11c0bf69084-7a92.html
    This raises a question: how am I supposed to keep my background from flashing from grey to white when the RIA is loaded? Is it possible to use preloader with background set to whatever color I like to see? Any easier solutions?
    Best regards,
    Jukka

    This works for me:
    @namespace mx "library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx";
    mx|Application{
         background-color:#ffffff;
    Of course if you have changed the Application element to spark equivalent, you have to change the namespace.

  • X11 in 256 color mode font issue

    Hello all,
    I have a problem with the X11 (X11 1.1.2 - XFree86 4.4.0) application on MacOS X 10.4.8. If I set the color depth to 256 colors and restart the application the fonts get corrupted. The X11 window gets unusable. Also the X11 application started has the same problem.
    I cannot use another color depth because the X11 application used asks for it.
    Maybe this is an Intel-based Mac issue only, but I do not know for sure.
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    There really aren't default outgoing font settings. They are only there for viewing. A workaround I have seen mentioned is to start you signature with the font style you want to use. When you start your message, click in that first part of your signature.

  • Y Axis label color inherits Pen color and not the default Label color.

    Hi,
    How do I enforce my Y Axis Label to taken the default color specified in the iChart Y-Axis Label Color property instead of picking it from the Pen color selected from the legend? I have a Y-Axis Label called "Total Stock", I can very well change the Label text using method
    document.TestChart.getChartObject().setYAxisLabel("Label from code");
    But when I use a similar
    document.TestChart.getChartObject().setYAxisLabelColor(Color);
    property, I dont see the color change on the screen. But when I get the color using a getYAxisLabelColor() method , the specified input Color is set. My Label in the Y-Axis, always inherits the Pen color of the selected Legend Item, by default the first Item color on Page Load.
    Settings done in the iChart:
    Use Selected Pen for label : Unchecked
    Y Axis Label Color: #000000
    Y Axis Label : Total Stock
    Show Y Axis Label: Checked.
    I appreciate your help,
    Ajitha

    Jeremy,
    I tried the method you mentioned...
    document.TestChart.getChartObject().setYAxisLabelColor(document.TestChart.createColor("#000000"));
    But I still dont see a change in the Label color.
    Another finding is, when I try to alert the Label color on load of the page or during the creation of the applet, I see the label color on the alert is not the pen1color but the default Label color that is set in the display template. I assume that the legend's default selection, overwrites the Label color with the first pen color, but I could not get it with the getYAxisLabelColor() method, even though I see it on the screen.
    Thanks!
    Ajitha

  • InDesign CS3 - Default Black color issue

    Default Black color converted as Spot color in Indesign CS3.
    I'm using default color "Black" in InDesign CS3. While creating PS from InDesign CS3 and convert it as PDF using Distiller 7 & 8, it would have changed as "Spot Color Black" instead of color "Black(CMYK)".
    Open the swatch and duplicate the color "Black" and renamed as "C=0,M=0,Y=0,K=100". It would work properly. i.e. output PDF has CYMK black instead of Spot color.
    We are unable to find/change globally because the Default color [Black] has both text and object.
    We do not have any problem with this default black color in Indesign CS2.
    It would be better if you provide a solid solution for this issue immediately. I need to send a test file to the printer on tomorrow (05/27/09).
    I have attached Testing.pdf and screenshot for your reference.
    Picture 1 shows the Default Black color converted as Spot color.
    Picture 2 shows duplicate black color created from Default [Black] color and we don't find any issue.
    Thanks
    Johnson

    First, this is a user forum, so all you'll get here is advice, not a "solid solution" from Adobe.
    Second, the current versions of InDesign and Acrobat are 6 and 9, respectively, and there will never be any new patches issued for earlier versions. Adobe does not divert effort away from current development to patch old software.
    This has been discussed here in the past few months. You should be able to find the thread if you search for keywords like spot black. For what it's worth, Acrobat 9 Pro's preflight does not detect a spot black in your sample PDF (though Pitstop might).
    I'm curious why you feel the need to distill PDF rather than export (as I see you did with the file you posted)?

    I was scanning the available compiler arguments list (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flex/using/WS2db454920e96a9e51e63e3d11c0bf69084-7a92.html) for Flex 4.5 SDK and noticed that the -default-background-color argument is gone (I realize it's been gone since 4 just haven't used the SDK much lately).  My background shows up as black when I run my app (it's an AS3 app with the new Away3D 4.0 Broomstick library) and there is no Flex code in my app so I was depending on this compiler argument to set my background color to white.
    How can I achieve this now that the argument is no longer available?  I just simply want to have a white background without physically having to create a white sprite in the back of my scene.  Is this possible anymore?
    Matt

    Simeon,
    Thanks for that, I had a brainfart and forgot you can have the properties defined in that manner.  I changed it but it still wasn't working which made me realize I had to change the backgroundColor property on the view in Away3D.  I realized this after trying the params for the class and then not adding the view (which had a white bg) and then i looked at the docs and bam, there it was.  Thanks!

  • How to get the default selection color from JTable

    Hi, there,
    I have a question for how to get the default selection color from JTable. I am currently implementing the customized table cell renderer, but I do want to set the selection color in the table exactly the same of default table cell renderer. The JTable.getSelectionBackgroup() did not works for me, it returned dark blue which made the text in the table unreadable. Anyone know how to get the window's default selection color?
    Thanks,
    -Jenny

    The windows default selection color is dark blue. Try selecting any text on this page. The difference is that the text gets changed to a white font so you can actually see the text.
    If you don't like the default colors that Java uses then use the UIManager to change the defaults. The following program shows all the properties controlled by the UIManager:
    http://www.discoverteenergy.com/files/ShowUIDefaults.java
    Any of the properties can be changed for the entire application by using:
    UIManager.put( "propertyName", value );

  • How to Set A Default Start Time For New Events In Calendar?

    How to Set A Default Start Time For New Events In Calendar?

    John,
    Thanks for that suggestion - could not get it to work. However, I did manage a different approach. I finally determined the sequence of events in terms of how the various events and listeners fire (I think).
    Basically, the CalendarActivityListener fires, followed by the listener associated with the Calendar object's Create facet, followed finally by the CalendarEventListener - the final is where the TriggerEvent is available and then finally, control is passed to the popup/dialog in the Create facet. So, my approach of trying to set/get the TriggerDate in the user's HTTP session was doomed to failure because it was being get before it had been set :(
    Anyway, I ended up adding a bit of code to the CalendarEvent listener - it grabs the current BindingContext, navigates through the DCBindingContainer to derive an Iterator for the ViewObject which drives the calendar and then grabs the currently active row. I then do a few tests to make sure we're working with a "new" row because I don't want to alter start & end dates associated with an existing calendar entry and then I define the Start and End dates to be the Trigger Date.
    Works just fine. Snippet from the listener follows
    BindingContext bindingContext = BindingContext.getCurrent();+
    *if ( bindingContext != null )    {*+
    DCBindingContainer dcBindings = (DCBindingContainer) bindingContext.getCurrentBindingsEntry();+
    DCIteratorBinding iterator = dcBindings.findIteratorBinding("EventsView1Iterator");+
    Row currentRow = iterator.getCurrentRow();+
    if ( currentRow.getAttribute("StartDate") == null)+
    currentRow.setAttribute("StartDate", calendarEvent.getTriggerDate());+
    if (currentRow.getAttribute("EndDate")==null)+
    currentRow.setAttribute("EndDate", calendarEvent.getTriggerDate());+
    *}*

  • Print outs have thin border when -default-background-color is set

    Hey everyone.  In my application the print out have this very thin border.  The -default-background-color is set to #333333 (dark grey) and this is the problem.  When I set the color to #FFFFFF (white), the thin borders go away.
    When I set the default-backgroun-color to #FFFFFF, my loading screen is white.  I don't want that.
    Does anyone know how I can have my loading screen with a #333333, but not have the thin border lines around my print outs?  Setting the border properties on the printed component doesn't work.  The problem is with the background color.
    Thanks for reading.
    Tom

    Still hacking away at this problem.
    I thought I had the fix until I deployed the AIR application.  Setting the -default-background-color to white worked fine when running from flex builder, but when I installed the application.  The "borders" are still showing.
    Has anyone had any experience with this?  I'm printing Point of Sale receipts and they look like crap with these lines around them.  On top of this, some printers print differently.  The HPs print a border around the whole component. The Brother printers just print the left and right.  One of my customer's printers just prints the bottom and right borders.
