X120e Sound and Display question...

Hey, I'm enjoying my x120e that I purchased earlier this year. I still love my T61 I purchased in 2008.
Couple of things though: the sound and screen.
Sound - does anyone else have hiccups with the sound where it makes a sort of long buzz through any playback for a time? If not, I need to mail in for servicing (unless I need to do a clean install or it's something I can fix).
The display is garish, and ultrabright. Has anyone had success with switching the panel to something else?
Thanks,
Erin

If the buzzing sound only happens after resuming from sleep, there was a bios update for it long time ago. Make sure you update to the latest BIOS.
As for the screen, yeah it's pretty bad for the viewing angles, there are several panels that are being used but I dont think you could request one specific part # to be replaced. I think It was a Samsung panel that was reported to be better than the LG. I had one with LG, and it was pretty crappy if not looking straight at it.

  • W540 - Sound and Display in Linux

    Hey dear supporter/user/reader!
After calming down due to the vast loss in quality of the new Lenovo ThinkPads (2.2k€ for such a plastic toy - rly?) I started installing a Debian sid with XFCE d/e. There were a couple of problems to solve, especially this rattly one-click-fits-all clickpad needed a lot of caring and compiling. And not to forget the first two days of my odyssey trying to boot up the machine with my OCZ Vertex 2 SSD installed with any format, partition table protocol or whatever firmware loaded - which was a sobering and vain experience. I ended up taking another SSD from my studio desktop which isn't only half the size but slower, too. 2.2k€ for a machine unable to boot a regular SSD - rly? Whatever, posting my whole snaggling-list would go far beyond the scope of this thread and we all know how capitalism and "consulting" works - so let's look forward.
There are lots of problems left but some of the major ones are:
    Bad sound in Linux
Bad color reproduction from the 3k display in Linux
    Sound:
In Windows the sound is quite nice. I know that it's a problem of alsa/pulseaudio drivers and that the community has to create appropriate drivers first. But there's no information around by now about the capabilities of the installed sound chip to create some usable workarounds:
Is there a subwoofer built in?
Or other channels/speakers I can route some signals to?
How is this full, brilliant and wide sound achieved in Windows?
Because just using the stereo speakers at the front edge of the notebook sounds really crappy. Routing the signal through an equalizer gets back some of the highs and the "bass" and eliminates some of the bugging mids around 1.5k but it is still far from the sound experience in Windows. And it brings in some problems because I have to setup a dirty workaround via DBus to select different presets in the e/q depending on the selected output device (speakers or headphone jack) which introduces more and more problems with muted channels after plugging a headphone aso.
    Display:
The colors look quite okay in Windows, in Linux it's a yellowish-green mess. Since I read about the pretty poor quality of the built-in colorimeter before I ordered this device I didn't buy it in anticipation of the tutorials about using the Windows color profiles in Linux. Unfortunatley copying the profiles from the Windows HDD (C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\color) and loading any of them via xicc, xcalib or any other tool handling color profiles does nothing to the color reproduction of the display. I found a profile made by a helpful person somewhere on the internet (notebookcheck? Unfortunately I don't remember) which makes this display kind of usable but it's far from being correct since it introduces a greenish inking at the lower end and a rose red one in the middle of the spectrum. Additionally the overall gamma curve doesn't fit that well. But at least it draws white as white and eliminates the overall lime style of the device.
    Résumé:
Maybe I'm just an idiot, too dumb to correctly copy and apply color profiles or to use alsa/pulseaudio the correct way. If so I would be very happy about anyone who would lead me in the right direction. Perhaps someone stumbled over the same problems and has some fixes or at least ideas where to look at. Perhaps someone calibrated his 3k display with a professional colorimeter and is willing to share the results.
If someone is interested in e.g. my Xorg config, the amd64 DEB package for getting a usable clickpad, the slightly working color profile or other informations I'm able to share, please let me know.
    Disclaimer:
I can understand if anyone is deterred by this rant in a way that she or he avoids to talk to such a poor goof, but perhaps someone understands my vast disappointment after spending a huge amount of money and a lot of time for a brand which is (was?) well known under (Linux-) enthusiasts for the outstanding build quality, the overwhelming compatibility and the ubergood hardware which was built into ThinkPad machines in the past. I owned, sold, recommended and installed lots of these notebooks before, my own last two machines were two t61p which I would call the peak in quality of this brand. But those times definetly seem to be over.
Thankful for every hint to make this thing more usable, best, Markus.

Here's another profile I stumbled upon. It was made for the T540p shipped with the same display. It is a little more even, so less different colours in the overall grayscale and it has a better gamma curve. But it has an overall greenish touch just like the display without any profile but considerably less.
    http://mein-neues-blog.de/files/t540p.icm
And to prevent users from searching I upped the profile from my last post to my blog, too:
    http://mein-neues-blog.de/files/LEN40B5.icm
BTW I'm actually hacking a GTK application for manipulating the ramps of a LUT profile in realtime since those profiles are not that bad but need a little tweaking to fit my own display.

  • Clicking sound and flashing question mark folder

This morning I started getting a repetitive clicking sound from the left of the machine. I wasn't using it at the time.
This stopped, and I tried closing apps: got the spinning beach ball. Let it run for a while, then tried force quit, which didn't work - the "Force Quit" window didn't appear. So, did a power off by pressing the power button.
At start up got a gray screen, the clicking noise, and then the folder icon with flashing question mark. Tried another start, got the chimes and blue screen and the clicking noise this time, then the gray and question mark.
My guess is I've got a bad hard drive: should I keep trying to start up so I can try to back up if I get a good start (last backed up a week ago) or is it doing more damage to keep trying?
Is it worth trying to run Disk First Aid or Tech Tool since it seems to be hardware related?

If it's clicking, it's probably failing. Try things in Apple doc.#58042 on Flashing? mark.
If the drive still spins, You could try the free demo of DataRescuell .
If the demo "sees" your stuff, you can purchase the full version to rescue the bigger files. Don't use the drive, till you get this program, if the demo works. Best chance of recovery. Otherwise Data Rescue companies will charge you a fortune! Everyone needs to have at least one backup of their system.
    Cheers! DALE

  • OS9 sleep and display questions

    I'm running Mac OS 9.2.2 on a Beige G3 All-In-One.
I often conduct downloads of large files on the computer (mostly transferring old software from my iDisk), and it seems a waste that there isn't an option to easily turn off the screen.
If I put the system into sleep mode, I assume this will halt the download and break the ethernet connection, right?
And is there a system option, extension, or perhaps a 3rd party app that will allow me to manually sleep the display?

    Hi, mohaas05 -
Check in the Energy Saver control panel.
If you do not see three sliders, click the "Show Details" button at the bottom. Then set the System and Hard Disk sliders to "never", and leave the Monitor slider set to your normal setting, probably 5 or 10 minutes or so.
This will allow the monitor to sleep without sleeping the computer (CPU) or drive - they can still function even when the monitor is sleeping.
If your machine is on a network, you may also need to tweak the settings in the Advanced tab of Energy Saver.
This arrangement also means a much faster wakeup from sleep.
You can still sleep everything, by selecting Sleep from the Special menu.

  • Windows 7 RC and Display Question

I have successfully installed Win 7 64 bit on an early Mac Pro with Nvidia FX 4500 display adapter attached to acrylic 23 Cinema Display via Apple ADC-DVI adapter. Both the current Nvidia Win 7 64 drivers and those automatically installed during Win 7 setup failed to work except in safe mode as a generic VGA adapter. With regular boot up, the display remained black.
I downloaded from the Nvidia site an archived driver for Vista 64 bit dated 8/2008 that worked, recognizing a "PNP display." This driver file allowed use of the native Cinema Display resolution.
Does anyone know why the most recent and specific Win 7 drivers fail to work with my display and adapter???

    Yes;
Go back to the examples and look up signal analysis or FFT. There will be examples showing spectral analysis, combine that functionality with the DAQ you have now and you're done.

  • X120e fit and finish question

I just received my x120e this past Friday (April 15, 2011). Everything works great and though I thought a little expensive for what it is ($415 E-350, 2GB, 320GB, W7 64) seems like a great buy so far. I do have one issue though and it may be an OCD thing. Computer open, right hand side (above the yellow USB port/SD slot) it seems the edges of the computer frame does not completely come together. It looks like it gets a little worse when the computer is warmed up (guessing cause the heat cause the expansion). Looking at it from the side profile you can tell the top portion is a little raised and looking at it from the top you can see some minor separation. I have tried applying a little pressure to see if it snaps in place but it seems the parts are solid. Does anyone else have this issue? And is this a defect or just something that happens when the computers are built?
    Solved!

I also noticed problems with the fit and finish on mine. The Lcd cover was misaligned with the body of the computer when closed, the bottom panel was bulging between two of the three screws, there was a scratch near the HDMI port.
I had the audio stutters also and the LCD screen was not very good. Audio stutters were eventually fixed, but there is nothing that can be done for the screen.
I also disliked the AC adapter that stuck straight out of the charging port, and the fact that the rear feet were on the battery.
The AC adapter would be very prone to  damage and if I wanted to run without the battery I would have to prop up the rear of the machine in order to get air underneath.
Removing the battery when running at home is something I do to spare the battery unnesseccary cycles.
Unfortunately the power manager did not have a function that you can dictate the charging limits for the battery.
For the above reasons I returned mine.
If fit and finish were flawless I would have probably kept it.
I can understand your issues, but the Power Manager certainly has the capability to define the charging limits for the battery. See this screenshot:

  • Why does iMessage continue to make sounds and display banners on my Macbook Pro (Retina) even though I have removed it from my notification center?

I hate that my messages pop up while I'm watching Netflix, and I have finally removed Messages from my notification center. Yet, for some reason i still keep hearing the noise that lets me know I have a message, and I a still seeing badges pop up on my screen every time a new message comes in? What's the deal?

I talked to Apple Support and we at least stopped the bleeding, a little bit. These are the troubleshooting steps I did before I contacted Apple Support:
    1. Reinstalled OSX
    2. Restore the last known good Time Machine Backup.
This did not fix my issue, so I called Apple Support and they told me this:
    1. Turn Power off.
    2. Wait 15 seconds.
    3. Plug in Magsafe adapter.
    4. Wait 15 seconds.
    5. Hold down the Shift+Option+Power Button for 20-30 seconds.
    6. Turn Power back on.
Ok, this stopped the bleeding a little, but as soon as I plugged in a Apple USB Superdrive
and a Apple Mini Displayport to VGA Adapter. This "USB Devices Disabled" pop-up pops up like every 30 minutes now. At least, it is not constantly popping up after I close it, so I guess it will do for the temporary. Going to contact Apple support, later, though to see what else can be done.

  • MMacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) switches on but internal display remains off/black .There is no start-up sound and the fan starts off normal but after about Five minutes begins to run even faster

    Hi ,
My MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) switches on but internal display remains off/black .There is no start-up sound and the fan starts off normal but after about Five minutes begins to run even faster as if the machine is running a heavy load.It displayed a question mark some time back then a friend borrwed it ,he flashed the system and put windows 7.Then a few days pasted and now it wont display as stated.I have tried to Reset SMC and the Command + P + R + Power but still no response. Please assist?
    Regrads Josh

I think your "friend" caused a problem (or two).
I do not know what "flashed the system" means......
Based on what was done, I would probably erase the HD and restore the system from a backup before the software changes were made.

  • Display Questions with Retina and VMware Fusion (Windows 7/8)

Looking to buy my first MacBook Pro and looking to make sure I get the specs I need and have a couple of questions.
I would like to be able to run (simultaenously)
    During the day for work:
Windows 7 x64 - 30GB HD - 1 Core - 1GB Ram - Purpose: Has a VPN client that allows me to VPN and RDP only
Windows 8.1 x64 - 60GB HD - 2 Cores - 4GB+ Ram - Purpose: Office 2013 installed on this VM and all my other work applicatons (light weight)
OSX 10.10 - Whatever it can take - Light Web Browsing etc while at work.
    After work:
Guess it doesn't matter really - i'd like to play games (bootcamp fine) if possible too. Nothing crazy so barely worth mentioning.
    My main questions:
Display: Iris Pro or nVidia - Can the base 15 inch GPU/CPU handle the two VMs at the same time plus the host OS (OSX) without hiccups?
Display: How does VMware Fusion recognize the discrete GPU - will the system be smooth/quiet without activating it?
Battery life: Virtualization is pretty heavy battery wise. Does anyone know what happens to the battery when you're running a couple VMs?
Display: How is running Windows 7/8 on a MacBook with a specifically retina display? Do the Windows PCs look really ugly/blurry due to such a high resolution?
What is the minimum hardware required for these VMs to run fast and responsive? (CPU/GPU/RAM only)
    Thanks!!

Sorry - we're users here, just like you, and some questions just get lost sometimes.
The fastest hardware you can buy, the easier you'll be able to run Windows. If you use Boot Camp to run Windows (7, 8 or 8.1) the machine will run at it's best. If you want to run Windows alongside the Mac OS, you'll need to use a VM application (I use Parallels - I've tried VMwareFusion but like Parallels better and it just works best for me).
    So, to your questions:
The Retina machine with the NVIDIA GPU will be the fastest - it's a faster processor and has more VRAM.
Any VM is going to use resources - how much RAM, for example, is up to you. I have 16 GB of RAM and 8GB dedicated to Parallels/Windows 7 Pro.
I wouldn't (and you really can't) run a VM for very long on battery. If you're using VM's, that's the time to plug into mains. Running a 'couple' of VM would put further heavy use on your GPU, CPU and shorten your battery life.
I would make sure to get a good, fast quad-core i7 processor, the 2GB of VRAM NVIDIA GPU and the maximum amount of RAM (16GB).
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Flash Security Settings and Random Questions not Displaying

    Hey folks,
I created a Captivate 4 project with 3 slides and a question pool of about 70 questions in which I am randomly pulling in. I am using IE7 and Flash 10. Publishing in Flash 10. If I publish or view in Preview in a web browser the project launches, plays the first 3 slides, and then goes blank when the first question should appear. Note: previewing the project AND publishing the project as an .exe does launch and display all the questions correctly. It ends up being a flash security issue. I went to the adobe site and via the Adobe Flash Player Security Manager" I entered in the main .SWF captivate-generated file as a trusted file and then re-ran the published captivate project and it ran correctly. Question is ... what do I need to do to set up flash or my project so I don't have to do this for every new project that I deploy? I don't want to have the users have to go in and add whatever I deploy as a trusted file. It's also a little confusing as to why the first three slides played and it stopped at the questions ... seems like if it's not a trusted file, that it wouldn't run at all.
    Thanks for any help!
    Chris

    Hello again
I think I'd be investigating a temporary web server to host on until things are ready. Here's where it will help.
By providing files to the end users, if you are copying files over you end up having to explain how to save the files. You then have to walk them through setting the Flash Security so they can properly view. It all just becomes a pain in the kazoo.
If you can find some server space, you simply upload the content and provide a link for the users to view the content.
Other than that, if you are insistent that copying is the way to fly, I might suggest you establish a known location where you want everyone to copy their files. Perhaps C:\TestFolder. Then provide some instruction on how to configure the folder with the relaxed Flash Security. From there forward, anything they copy to the folder should need no security adjustment.
    Cheers... Rick

iMac won't turn on. Only a clicking sound and a grey folder with flashing question mark.
    Help.

Your iMac is actually turning ON as proven by the grey folder with the flashing question mark.
The flashing question mark indicates that your system is unable to find a bootable volume. The clicking sound that you hear is probably coming from your hard drive while it tries to recalibrate. I suspect your hard drive has failed.
What model imac do you have? If it's under warranty I suggest taking it in for service. Hopefully you've been maintaining a regular backup of your data as all users should. I lost my data once and it was a valuable lesson. I back up regularily now.
If your iMac came with install disks then you can boot from them, choose your language when asked, then pull down the Utilities menu to launch the Disk Utility application. The Disk Utility application will allow you to verify whether your hard drive has an issue. Usually a clicking sound, assuming it's coming from the hard drive, is a sign of a bad hard drive.
If your system has Lion installed then you can hold down the Command and R keys when you restart the system, then launch the Disk Utility application from the menu that appears.
